hello alex. I want to know if you have training workshops in dallas or its nearby area here. I want to join your physical classes to develop my skills.
Thank you for this video Alex! I am a 4 time Cancer survivor, and speaking to a group at a Head & Neck Cancer research golf fundraiser in 6 days. The timing of your video couldn't be more helpful!
Grateful. I recently joined toastmasters and I’m on my way. They called me a natural on my ice breaker speech and gave me good tips and feedback. Now these videos are super helpful. I am excited.
Hello Mr. Alex - I want to compliment you on all of your videos. I can not comment on all individually however I will leave a general comment on this one. I thought I was good at public speaking and speeches -your tips raised me to the next level. I had a very important speech and for some reason was a bit apprehensive about it. Using your techniques I feel I did an outstanding job and so did others. Keep up the great work!
In my head I really struggle doing presentations, but I get voluntold for them regularly and I use this method a lot and funny enough many people now think I am an extrovert… far from it, I would run far away from these presentations. What helps me with this method is that it helps you to stay on track. You have a message, your slides illustrate the message but you tell a story from A to B. Going of on a tangent or answering a public question can make you loose where you were and then the card basically lets you pick up or skip forward. Personally I add a lot of questions to my cards as I find it easier to speak naturally if I see a question on the card and convey the answer to the public. What does my team do? Were we successful the first quarter? How did we reach our targets? If you get stuck just asking yourself those questions out aloud will kickstart your brain in answering what it already knows, because you know your job, you know what you have done, you are just telling this to others.
I believe ‘extemporaneous’ qualifies a type of delivery rather than a type of speech. Hence, manuscript and memorized speeches can be delivered extemporaneously. But I especially like the practical tips towards the end. Useful video. Thank you!
You raise an interesting point that I'd like to respond to. Yes, extemporaneous is a style of delivering, but it's not merely about delivery. If we limit it to the in-the-moment delivery style, then the terms lose almost all of their usefulness. The type of speeches are all tied directly to the entire process of preparation (or lack of preparation as is the case with impromptu speaking) that allow for that type of delivery. In other words, these are types of speeches because the memorization process, manuscript process, etc. that happen behind the scenes are part of what creates the speech. This is one of the main reasons impromptu and extemporaneous speeches are often confused. In the moment, you can hardly tell the difference in some cases. What differentiates them is the preparation process. The method of preparation is folded into the type of speech it is. So, I agree that some people can make a manuscript speech sound fairly extemporaneous or conversational. I do both manuscript speeches and extemporaneous speeches and 99% of the time, listeners assume I'm speaking extemporaneously even when I'm using a manuscript. But that doesn't change the fact that speakers prepared a word-for-word manuscript beforehand that they are essentially stuck with. Extemporaneous delivery includes adaptation, expanding and contracting content, spontaneity, etc. in ways that manuscript or memorized delivery cannot accomplish. The audience may not realize that's what's happening because they don't know what the speaker intended to do in the first place. But when I give a manuscript speech, I can't really deviate from the script very much no matter how conversational I sound. I experience the restrictions that come with the manuscript. Now, as a speaker, I could throw out the script and just speak extemporaneously. I've seen speakers abandon their plan. But that's not really what we're talking about. But it's a good question. The bottom line is that the method of preparation is part of the definition. We might use the word _style_ as a shorthand but delivery is only part of the official definitions.
My Lyon, your selfless sharing of your communication knowledge and skills are truly admirable. Your generosity and willingness to help others achieve their best is a testament to your character and kindness. Thank you for making the world a better place through inspiring others to prioritize their own communication development.
There are various cues UA-cam uses to screen out comments like posting links, offensive key words/curses, etc. If a commenter gets enough flagged comments, UA-cam make block them across all channels. Also, individual channels can block users and/or delete specific comments. It's all just part of using the platform.
This video is super helpful -- and VERY timely. 😄😄 (As we speak)... I'm preparing to deliver a presentation the first week in August. I definitely want to employ the extemporaneous approach. My goal is to be so fluid in my topic that I'll only have to (sporadically) rely on a bulleted outline just to stay on target, and cover the main points. Praying it goes smoothly. 🙏🙏 Thank you, Alex, for these great tips! 🎯🎯🎯
Thank you very much! This is truly helpful! Yes, most of us already do rehearse and prepare notes of some kind, but you detailed out, what kind of notes, how to spread the time on them, and that is crucial: the timing. A minute per note is a great tip! As I am preparing for my final exam, this is exactly what will help me time my 15 minutes . Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I recently paid $2000 to attend a 3 day course on executive speaking. This video was much more beneficial and informative than that course! Thanks for the excellent content.
I think the extemporaneous style of preparation is also the best way to do better at impromptu speech. You internalize the structures and knowingly or unknowingly they affect how you speech impromptu when necessary.
Agreed. And Impromptu is a great way to learn to speak from just a few words of notes and rely on a mental framework. Impromptu proves to speakers they don't have to be locked in to their notes.
Notes: Audiences don't like lack of engagement through reading a script. Audiences don't like memorization as it feels fake and robotic. Extemporaneous speaking outline: Detailed outline Practice Simplify outline, acting as visual aids to remind you of the points you will be communicating. Advantages: Speaker is knowledgeable regarding the topic. Provides flexibility, fluidity, and versatility. Method 2 Recommended: Write detailed outline (Just rough outline on my end as we are only given two minutes to prepare) Simplify
Thank you so much for this video Alex, it was very helpful and just want I needed to see before I deliver a presentation soon. God Bless you and your work!
Thank you so much for breaking down the countdown actions, usually I get bored after 2-3 rehearsal. How can I keep myself doing it for 10 times a full presentation.
Aim to be absolutely excellent. The higher your goal, the more motivated you'll be. Also, I usually focus on making specific improvements each time I practice. One time through, I might focus on pausing and not using fillers. The next time through, I try to maintain good pauses but I also work on my gestures. The next time, I focus on practicing (pretending) to make eye contact. I just keep finding small (and large) improvements to make each time and it keeps me motivated. Also, by spreading those practices out over 3 days, you're motivation will be more refreshed rather than practicing 10x in a row.
@@alexanderlyon indeed, I think the part to finding out what to improve on each slides, what to add/say helps me to keep going and and make improvement. Keeping that in my note book!: P
I've been following you for a while and I always love your videos. Great work! Thanks. This video is not an exception, on the contrary, it's been quite usel. I use the method you mention in Spanish, which is my mother tongue, and I can tell that it works. However, I find it difficult to do it in English. Any suggestion for those trying to use this method in a second language?
No. I record up to 8 videos in one sitting and it takes me about 3 or more hours to do that. I have to speak from really detailed notes so that I don't forget my examples (or use the same example twice). It looks like you have a channel so I'm sure you know that making videos is a different process from giving speeches live. But I do prepare this way when I give speeches. This is the exact process I use.
@@alexanderlyon Yes and I have done it different ways. I have used a teleprompter and found it better to keep me on track. But it can be restrictive. Do you script 100% or use an outline for your UA-cams?
It depends on the video. Some are scripted entirely, but others are from key points or questions. But the way I script is that I create an outline of basic talking points first and then I just talk into the computer and it records and transcribes what I say for each point in a conversational way. I approach that scripting process like I'm practicing aloud. I stop. I think about how I want to say it. I may say some parts a few ways and keep the best one. So, I script by talking and it's much faster that way as well compared to typing.
It's anybody else way too nervous to do this for a longer speech? I can do it for a couple minutes, but longer I feel like I would forget everything because I'm nervous. Perhaps this is a mis advanced strategy?
