I understand (and, most definitely, agree with) moving away from the Spektrum SMART ecosystem...but, in a way, this is just moving from one smart ecosystem, to another smart ecosystem. Yes, the Gens Ace smart batteries can be charged in other chargers (and, that's a great thing)...but, the whole purpose of getting any smart battery is to utilize the smart tech inside that battery. Just like the smart tech inside the Spektrum SMART batteries can only be used with Spektrum SMART chargers, and the smart tech inside the Traxxas iD batteries can only be used with Traxxas iD chargers, the only way to use the G-Tech tech inside the Gens Ace batteries is to use Gens Ace G-Tech enabled chargers. And, it's for that very reason that I continue to avoid smart batteries whenever possible(the only exception is my Blade helicopter, & Typhon Grom (at least, for now)), as I don't want to be 'locked' into any brand's "ecosystem". At the same time, I do REALLY like Gens Ace batteries (they are my 'backup' choice after SMC).
The gens ace is the only one that lets you use the battery on a non smart charger, so it’s not really the same as the traxxas or spectrum. It’s by far the least offensive.
@TheShopMiniRC I understand the Gens Ace G-Tech batteries are the "least offensive", and, between any of them, they are the ones it's be MOST interested in. IF I was going to get smart batteries from any manufacturer, they are the ones I'd be most likely to get. But, in terms of being about to use the smart functionality if any batteries, you're forced into purchasing that brand's chargers, locking a person in that system. The second unfortunate side of it is (which I wasn't thinking about into later), not all battery types and/it batteries with specific connectors will be made by any one 'smart' manufacturer. For example, many of us with RC boats use QS8 connectors, and require packs with high (100C, and above) discharge rates. I don't see Gens Ace offering those in G-Tech variants...though, I'd really like to see them do so, as that would be a HUGE incentive to make the switch to G-Tech. As their G-Tech line of batteries increases, there's always the possibility.......
@ the nice thing about the gens ace smart batteries is that you can always change the main lead connector as the “smart part” is in the balance plug. So you can easily swap any smart battery from them to a qs8 plug. ;)
@TheShopMiniRC That's true...I hadn't thought about that. But, at the same time, looking at the Spektrum SMART batteries, I did happen to notice that only certain ones don't come with balance connectors. Others do come with balance connectors, which means that can be charged by any charger, not just Spektrum SMART chargers (I discovered a actually do have one in my battery collection, and it has a balance connector). But, here's a question people should probably ask themselves: Is it worth it to spend the extra money on a smart battery (such as the G-Tech batteries) if they don't plan to use the smart functionality, or that company's smart charger? After all, smart batteries typically cost more than their non-smart counterparts, right? If a person doesn't plan to charge using that company's smart charger, why would they be willing to pay the higher cost of a smart battery, when they can purchase a non-smart version for less money? These days, people are more & more concerned with how much they're spending, and looking for ways to save money. The smart battery & charger 'game' is a way to get people to spend more money on something, as opposed to less. I think, when the cost of smart batteries & chargers comes down, and when the number of batteries for any given smart ecosystem vastly increases (ie. everything from really low, to super high, discharge rates); a full range from 2S to 6S; a wide capacity range, from under 1000mAh, all the way to 10K mAh; and, for those not locked to a specific manufacturer (such as Traxxas, or Horizon Hobby) multiple connector options; that's when I believe more people will finally be willing to move into a 'smart' ecosystem. Until then, is guess that the vast majority will continue using non-smart batteries & chargers.
@ I agree that the question of “do I pay for something I’m not going to use” makes total sense. Sometimes though, they might offer a size/volatage/form factor, or even connector that others don’t for the needed application, and in that case, yah, might as well buy it if it’s what you need. Trust me, I’m not the biggest fan of being pigeon holed into an ecosystem, but what I like about the gensace is that I don’t HAVE to use their stuff to use their batteries. (Unlike others that literally REQUIRE IT) and it’s even worse when those that require it, use those batteries in their RTRs…. Makes it rough for sure.
