Martin asked Skill Builder:
Some years ago a company put flyers through all the letter boxes for cleaning and painting roof tiles.
They claimed it would improve waterproofing. This seemed like a lie to me since the houses were built in the late 60s early 70s with concrete tiles over roofing underlay.
I believe the underlay is the waterproofing layer and the tiles are weather protection for the underlay.
At least two neighbours had their roofs done and one has since had the treatment repeated.
In the cavity wall video, you were asking for rant subjects and I do not recall seeing one on this subject.
The current roofing underlay is bitumen and loosely woven fabric that has become brittle and at least one house has had to have all of the roof stripped down and rebuilt because of it starting to fail.
I suspect some of the wood tile laths are also starting to get old and will soon need replacing.
The workers who did the work took no precautions for working at height, the properties are bungalows but the apex of the roof is at least 6m high. Gable ends no hips.

We have those scammers in Australia too, I always figured that the guys stomping around on the roof were a bigger threat to its integrity than a bit of moss.
I've been to Australia the actual states of the roofs over there are a joke. Yous guys don't have roofers you have dulux paint technicians. Paint the roof to fix all problems.
@@johnantonine4505 That would vary by suburb and region, we have a lot of metal roofing too. Tiles don't cope well with monster hailstorms, then again neither do solar panels. 🤣
@@johnantonine4505 In Australia snakes and spiders keep the rain out of our roof
@@johnantonine4505 you sound like you are part of the travelling community?!
@@raybans8712 why would you say that
Ps when they are up there break a few tiles, siliconed together, more damage than pre work.
Ha ha...yes exactly..happened to me...had the satellite guy in and few weeks later I had a leak. Still can't complain I got a quote for the moss and stuff and the firm said it's good for another five years call us then..
My mums old house was a slate roof with no felt. It's still the same now. Well over 100 yrs old. Amazing really.
That doesn't mean you can't protect it.
Nail fatigue is common with those old nails.
Once gone they can't be renailed .
You can spray an insulating foam on the back that keeps them in place.
Natural slate has its own beauty .you wouldn't want to coat them.
But tiles get scruffy
I've found this a great process.
We are more than happy with it
Just like to add my two cents as someone who does a little bit of roof moss removal.
I think roof coatings, especially the ones that came about maybe 10 years ago are a bit of a scam/pointless. However, I do a bit of moss removal and then put a biocide (not a coating) application onto the roof which helps inhibit future growth. In theory, you can keep applying biocide every few years (fairly cheap to do) and it'll prevent any moss/algae/biofilm regrowth etc.
Certainly not every roof needs this, not even the majority of roofs need this. But there are obviously properties in troublesome areas (say in dark/humid areas under trees/lots of shade perfect environment to grow loads of moss and algae) that attention needs to be paid to those roofs. Also of course you can just opt to have moss removed for the pure curb appeal aspect.
I have seen one roof that was so thick with moss that it had added such a weight to the roof (imagine how heavy it is after a heavy downpour of rain or in winter when it'll freeze and expand) that it caused significant bowing in the roof and cracked some of the wooden supports underneath.
Does that biocide get washed off into the drainage system? Just wondering of potential hazards if it became popular.
@@wallyknew Great question. It absolutely shouldn't. Best practice is to brush the biocide on which reduces run off compared to spray on and the gutters must be disconnected and waste collected and properly disposed of/reused.
Sadly, I think most people that apply the biocide allow it to run its course which usually ends up down the surface water drain.
How long should a biocide treatment last for roughly? We have terrible problems with moss growth on this roof.
We were quoted by someone about £600 just for cleaning.. I've no idea if that's the going rate but it seemed pricey to me. So I am curious if I biocide treatment would last long enough that it does away with an expensive clean every year.
@@Paul-XCIV2 It's hard to answer, every home really is different. You'll have different species of algae in your part of the country than mine. Also nearby plant life and other environmental factors play a part. I think the average is 3 to 4 years, but once you've had the moss removed it should be relatively low cost to just apply the biocide.
£600 might be a good rate or might not, I don't know. A lot of the cost can just be access to the roof like scaffold towers/pickers etc. You typically don't want someone walking all over your roof scraping moss off, much safer for the contractors and your roof if they're off your roof when they do it
@@alexscott6031 Fair points. Thank you!
Roger, I live in Germany and last year in February we had a very fine snow that blew in under the tiles, old house with no felt of course.Didn't know anything until the drips started, in every room.I had to pull every ceiling down and re-do the f#####g lot.
Insurance assessor refused payout on the grounds that the roof was defective , ended up forking out 35 grand to have a completely new roof done...moral of the story?---easier to install felt than replacing ceilings and redecorating an entire house.
Using a high powered pressure washer could cause more damage than good, because the strength of the water stream can remove the finish of the roof tiles and increase moss to grow more in the future.
@@criollitoification Wife has killed are pans!
Yes, but that's what the "special coating" they put on is for...
@@Snaffer01 My help if you can afford it!
I clean roofs for a loving, i never seen any problems. I don’t use hydrofuge on roofs, pre treatment and post treatment with bio degradable biocide. This will keep you’re roof looking as new.
@@DDG-Downfall Power washing roof tiles can potentially cause problems if not done properly. Here are a few considerations:
1. Tile Damage: The forceful pressure from power washing can crack or dislodge roof tiles, especially if they are fragile or already damaged. It's important to assess the condition of the tiles beforehand to minimize the risk.
2. Water Damage: If the power washer is used incorrectly or at the wrong angle, it can force water beneath the tiles, leading to leaks and water damage inside the house. Proper precautions should be taken to ensure water doesn't penetrate the roof.
3. Loss of Protective Coating: Some roof tiles have protective coatings that help preserve their appearance and functionality. Power washing can strip away these coatings, leaving the tiles exposed to the elements and potentially shortening their lifespan.
4. Moss and Algae Growth: While power washing can remove moss, algae, and other organic growth from roof tiles, it may not eliminate the root cause. If the underlying issue is not addressed, these growths can return more quickly, requiring frequent power washing or alternative treatments.
My dad had a visit from some travelling gentlemen a couple of years ago offering to spray the roof. He's rather gullible (and in his 90s) and was just about to hand over 1500 quid or so. Fortunately neighbours intervened and got rid of them, and in fact the police were involved too as these gentlemen were well-known to them. Of course I suspect 1500 quid would have just been the start of it.
I take it you're being ironic with......travelling gentlemen.
You're lucky the police got involved, my old man (early stage dementia) got caught by those "travelling gentlemen" you mention, trimmed a tree and took £600 off him, when we went to the local police station to report it the desk guy was all business.....until I mentioned travellers, he closed the book shrugged and said there's nothing he could do.
You can also get a clear roof coating too. When applied, has a blue tinge to it but drys clear with a slight shine to it.
Over here in the west of Ireland have seen a few roofs powerwashed and a special paint put on. Yes they look good for a year or so then back to old looking.
This happened to my parents, their clean roof seemed to be a bat signal to every con artist. Next they had someone come round and and jet wash their block paving, and spray it with a special coating that they said needed to be done every year.
Thanks for the straight talk. I actually believe that moss on the roof tiles adds value - gives it the "living" natural look. It certainly does not degrade the roof's ability to keep rain out.
fti did roof cleaning in Orlando FL for many years.. Chlorine and some water is what is used to kill all green or gray things for a year or two.
Hello boys, hope all you guys had a lovely day! Thanks Richard.
I've got over a decade of surface chemistry experience. Did extensive research on hydrophobic coatings and a bit with antifouling (stop barnacle growths on ships, moss/mold on wood) coatings as well. This is a con. Like rainex on your windshield any repellency effects will diminish rather quickly. Even quicker on roofing tiles given their friability, roughness, and porosity vs glass.
These bloody hydrophobes moaning about all that water coming over here and taking all our jobs.
I use wax on the windows. Lasts a lot longer then rainx but takes longer to apply since you rub it in, let it sit and wipe off

Hi there, is this the same principle for wall coatings, specifically Pro Perla. We've had a quote to paint our old stone building with this and the quote is quite a bit more than being painted with trade masonry paint. In your opinion is it worth the extra money? Many thanks Jane
@@janearthur9585 painting an old stone building would require a special masonry paint. However, with a true stone building there’s likely no cavity and the wall will need to “breath.” Internally this is usually achieved a Lime wash plaster and paint. These breathable finishes are are much softer than typical paints and plasters. I’d be concerned with the longevity of any external paint that is still permeable.
As someone who repairs and restores old roof for a living, Paint is a protective coating that protects the substrate for further deterioration. If you don't maintain the roof of your home eventually it will cost you a lot of money when it needs replacing. Not only that but if you don't maintain your roof and need to make a claim through your insurance due to storm damage the claim will not be excepted by your insurance company.
Hi All, I have a question, which roof type is better & why (slate is excluded)? Smooth clay or Rough concrete? Many Thanks
This summer I did replace some Marley Moderns from 1970, 25 tiles or so, the sides/seams were very badly eroded, crumbling away, not quite enough for water to get in but almost. I suspect the moss which has been freezing and thawing over the years.
@@criollitoification That's why I think Marley Modern is the king of roof tiles.
'' roofing felt'' only really came into use after the second world war. Shortage of labour meant that by using felt the works could continue under it, in the dry ,until the tilers could get to it.
i read a story recently that the felting enabled the house owner to tile the roof easily by themselves as it kept the roof dry while they did it. Similar situation I guess.
A few of my neighbours have had this done a few years back and tbh the finish was nice and they all still seem very clean and look fresh . Haven’t looked into the properties of the paint they used “sure cost” I believe . Good for thought
Can you insulate when your roof has no felt lining?
I have a 30s bungalow, it appears to have plaster type material on the inside which is degrading. Can I put some rigid board up and board over?
In Spain: I would say two things - terracotta tiles and the mortar mixture used to bed them together. I am of the opinion that products like those of Sika are likely beneficial to their look and longevity - more as a method of "touching-up" tiles that have already largely been in place for 40 years. The biggest issue is "roof repairers" using an in-appropriate cement mixture which results in the rapid degradation of the mortar. For that I would be more inclined now to use a PU adhesive foam.
I was quoted for the roof cleaning & treatment, I can't recall how much it was & the guy said it would be much more expensive for a new roof giving some silly price as an example. After doing a bit of research it actually wasn't that much more to have a new roof, plus it would last a good 50 to 75 years more.
Such an insipration, Roger! Thank you for your contributions.
Really nice of you thanks Stefan
Thanks for the straightforward advice. 🙂
Last house I had did not have roofing felt but bare clay tiles cemented!?! on the inside. Never leaked but I had to replace as the clay tiles were beginning to break in half and on windy nights you could hear them slide down the roof, hit the gutter launch off, somersault and land on the public pavement outside.......
You should see the state of them round my way now, flaking off and looks a right show. Believe it or not one neighbour has used it on the roof, lead flashing and his driveway.. oh dear. Moss for me, its character.
Happened to my grandad, he paid a deposit and some guy in a tracksuit with a ladder sprayed some ‘chemical sealer’ on the roof with a cheap garden sprayer. While doing so broke a tile and a week later he had rain water pouring into the attic. £800 gone not including paying a roofer to fix the leak. Happened without the families knowledge.
Years ago I tried to buy a flat on the top floor of an old building.
I got a builder friend round to check it out because I was worried about the roof.
At some point someone had covered the whole of the 130 + year old slates in what appeared to be tar.
It seemed to have worked really well.
The roof was well solid.
I got gazumped though.
I pressure washed all the moss off my times and plan to repaint them myself (with specialist tile paint), though this is more for cosmetic reasons than anything. No membrane under my old roof but I'm considering adding insulation stapled under the rafters. Ventilation is a bit of a concern...
I've recently added some wool (Thermafleece) between the rafters. The main reason is we have so much stuff stored in the loft and I'd like the temperature to not be so extreme in there. 140-year-one house with original rafters, absolutely covered in soot which made it a total pleasure to do.
I remember a few years ago some guys going around my suburb pressure washing peoples roofs, then the next week they'd have someone on the roof repairing the cement the pressure washer dislodged. These were 50 year old houses and had done without being pressure washed in all those years.
100years for a concrete roof tile ? Have a word with yourself that's bad advice. 25-40 year old concrete tiles that are becoming porous will soak up water causing dampness, causing batten to rot, causing felt to deteriorate and putting alot of weight on your not so healthy roof.
If there is actually a coating that can seal porous tiles? It could probably get someone a few extra years of roof life until they get round or can afford a reroof.
The Marley concrete tiles they are producing the now are dud out the pallet never mind 100 years.
If you don't have underfelt, you know straight away if you've got a broken tile, with underlay you don't know until it's either rotted lathe and more tiles slip or worse. And people worry about it far to much, like you've pointed out 👍
Can anyone recommend a good roofer in the Blackpool area
I recently replaced the soffits and fascias with plastic, while I was up there on the scaffolding I scraped all the roof of every bit of moss and shît up there. Once it was clean I sprayed it with wet and forget using a soap mixer with a pressure washer and it’s been moss free for quite some time and still going. Thoroughly recommend it if you want to help stop it growing. I did ask my roofer about it and Apparently roofers will spray wet and forget on roofs as a regular thing but first time I’ve heard of it is when I asked him 🤷🏼♂️ either way the sales fuckers with the special coating crap are going to a special kind of hell. They rip so many people off.
Had one customer tell me she had her bricks sprayed with a water repellent barrier. They charged her nearly £10k for it 😢
If you look at the prices for breathable watersealant for bricks I can see how you might get £10k for a big job but I doubt she needed all of it sealed. I brushed a tin of it onto one area of my brickwork that gets very wet and that's as far as I will go.
Expert advice as always.
My roof was slate with no felt since 1890s 🤯 no major issues really but it’s been replaced now
Some of these tradesman are ruthless! 😂
I think con men would be more appropriate, they aren't genuine tradespeople as they can only earn a living by dishonest means.
Thay are not tradesmen
I disagree.
You said he spent a couple of hours taking the moss off and spray the stuff on.
In Australia If you get a legit company the cleaning will take most of the day on a standard sized roof, secondly they should be repointing the ridgecaps and thirdly applying the sealer and 2 coats of membrane paint. Replacing any broken tiles before all this starts
Good quality paint should last 15 to 20 years. The concrete tiles will not have degraded any further.
In the video you provided you can see the mould in-between the tiles (watercourse) has been cleared. This can help clear up leaks too.
the painted tiles
The prices some of them charge is a joke you could re lath and felt and put new tiles on for a bit more and it would last another 50 years then instead of maybe 1 year
I thought about having miss removed but decided as others have said it’s actually causing no damage and eating up CO2 at the same time - If moss is an issue best solution I’ve seen is copper strips which when it rains leak copper and kills moss
Same nonsense happening here in Australia. My roof doesn’t have sarking. Although for a warmer climate letting in as much ventilation is a must. 60 Degrees plus in the roof on a summers day!
Around here, land of wood shake and composition shingles, the sales pitch starts with “it’s starting to show its age.” The product they are selling will (they say) extend the life of the roof by up to 20%. As if “up to” wasn’t enough of a red flag, they mean “20% of its remaining life”. 20% of “no time left” isn’t long at all.
Thank you. My instinct was that it's a scam but it's good to be told by an expert.
Another similar scam we get offered is that the timber is being attacked by longhorn beetle. We have oak trees and unfortunately they do get attacked so the scammers go around telling people in affected areas that their roofs need treating too. I checked it out and seasoned wood (10 years) doesn't have the nutrition and treated wood is: treated.
He isn’t a roofer he is a plumber Z
tiled rooves can be brought back to looking like new but requires a lot of work - I would not use pressure washing since it can strip the tiles too much - an alternative is to re roof with corrugated iron which would look even better and probably cost no more than renewing tiles
many thanks !!!
Nothing wrong with getting your roof cleaned. We do impregnate though, it really helps against moss growth and moisture. Moss, algae and moisture soaking in do damage in the long run. Its only usefull with older tiles thats lost there waterproof shiny slick surface. Course?
We dont sell it as a special magic coating or that kind of nonsence. Its just a basic primer applied after cleaning and its a 1 hour job with an airless sprayer when we already are on a roof cleaning.
Wet n forget is a great product to spray on a roof. Not very expensive and does a good job
Hi I'm that Roger Busy Bee off that Skill Builder channel wot you all like and today I'm gonna be lassoing me some bloody cowboys.
Somebody call Tony Martin
People have this done to their roof to help sell the house, it looks like a new, or at least well kept roof.
Well the surface of the earth is getting warmer, on average. But as they say if you put your head in the freezer and your feet in the oven the temperature of your body is just fine, on average.
Wow these guys must be doing the rounds, we was doing a resin drive few weeks ago. And these guys were trying to talk our customer into this works. They even offered there “services” to us, I’m unsure what they meant by “services” but you can be sure it was a no. 😂
Redland tiles also known as Cambrian tiles made by redland roofing factory near my home. Good quality tiles using recycled slate and resins, part of the large group, I had the luxury of your of the factory and perform a swat analysis for my school coursework and got a couple of family members that work there
Cambrian is just one of their products.
My brother in-law was quoted 4k to do his roof with this crap.( Thompson's Water Seal) As his next door neighbor had it done they came around and tried the hard sell. He told them to get lost I can get it re roofed for 3k . Well 3 years later his neighbours roof look's worse than his roof. It's got 3x the amount of moss in it now and the tiles are now perishing as the water has got in them. There is loads in my town and they look crap after a few years.
A decent slope on a roof removes the need for a membrane. A lightly sloped roof can have the membrane ending in the gutter or better still under the gutter allowing you to spot leaky tiles.
Agree with the stuff about the spray on coating but i work on roofs every day and it's definitely better to have a breathable roof membrane than not.
I have a breathable membrane but I am saying people should not be alarmed by a few tears in the sarking felt. No felt is not terrible
Former roofer here, i watch the cowboys blasting the pointing away, then paint the gap with miracle paint, which can adhere to concrete tiles, lead/ zinc valleys/ flashings, cast iron, pvc, rubber, The miracle paint does stick to all these materials long enough for the cheque to clear, to be fair 🤣🤣🤣
The only benefit I can think of for spraying roof tiles is actually linked to Rogers last comment. In one of David Attenborough's latest documentaries (I think the one before the most recent) je said that the white colour of the ice is beneficial to reflecting a lot of the sun's radiation back out the atmosphere so in my head only (and I'm no scientist) would spraying rooces white help with this? No real idea but seems logical to me plus it's a lot of surface area that's really unused for the most part. Maybe there will be someone smarter in the comments to put me right
I worked in Hanover as a roof tiler in 1969/70 (repairs only). I trained and qualified (on site learning as there was no college/apprenticeship available in those days) as a roof tiler and slater in Pontypridd Wales. All the roofs I worked on in Hanover did not have underfelt.
The loft spaces (all had steep pitches, some 3m headroom) on all properties were used for storage, hanging washing etc (flats in particular). They all had skylights and the tiles were torched (pointed on all joints/overlaps to stop weather ingress, snow in particular.
Very interesting channel Rog
Thanks Thomas that is interesting to know. We could do a good Zoom chat with you.
Aussie Roof Tiler and former roof coater here.
To put it simply, a roof clean and coat is purely cosmetic. It doesn't protect or extend the life span of your roof tiles at all.
If done professionally and with High quality product, it can give your roof nice new coat of colour. HOWEVER, there are a lot of dodgy mobs all over Australia that go around painting roofs with no roof tiling experience, using bad product and causing damage to the roof in the process. So to anyone thinking of repainting their roof, be very careful with who you go with.
Curious but where have you seen a 100-year guarantee ?? Quote from Marley 'Here at Marley, we offer a 15-year system warranty on our complete roof systems, and the roof tiles are generally expected to have a lifespan of 60 years or more'. Redlands stipulate the same 15 years in general
Power washing can damage the roof tiles , skews or flashing. The coating can look aesthetically good for a few years but no benefit to fabric of the roof. Roof felt under tiles/slate only makes roof water tight until the roof tiling/slating is complete, only temporarily beneficial if slate/tile gets dislodged.
Had a glaswiegen group of scammers around one time. They claimed it would save me 10% off my electricity bill due to keeping the heat in! The main salesman was a skinny 18 year old who turned up in a rusty punto wearing his dad's oversized suit. Big folder in hand showing me before and after pictures. I said I wasn't interested since he could not give me a price. Apparently it was too difficult to work out. He rang his boss who was quite irrate that I didn't want it done. That was the last time I ever interacted with any cold callers at the door. Now if anyone comes around offering services all I do is say not interested and close the door. It's not worth the hassle.
Love the channel ❤
thank you
Here on the mainland we have asphalt not clay. Only lasts about 30 years😢
I've even seen cowboy adverts suggesting that this kind of coating gives an insulation benefit. Seriously. What's the R-value on a layer of paint, and what earthly good would it do on the cold side of a standard ventilated roof?!
At about 1 min in that’s just lichen which is van indicator of good air quality.
I am a roofer of 40 years , i can categorically say that roof spraying is a CON !!
in my area (south wales ) you can have a NEW ROOF for just about 3 to £500 more then these people charge !
These people sharks pressure washing a roof will start take the surface off and will actually reduce the life of a tile. Plus painting the tiles means if you have any maintenance to do ie broken tiles to replace you’d have to get them all sprayed too. My ex mother in law fell foul of these people and even after id warned her not to she spent £22,000 with them. It lasted 2 years id priced it up for felt batten and new tiles at £8,600 for her and they would have looked better even fifteen years later.
They've been doing this con in the UK since the 80s. I remember it well for one particular roof I saw then. They made a right mess
The travelling folks do this but no coating. The power wash the roof, taking many layers off. Looks like acid has stripped them. Then that’s it. Looks awful. I use that spray stuff wet and forget using the sniper nozzle. Works a treat. I’ve seen crowd pick at the moss and throw it off, always a bonus. The travellers quoted my neighbour £1000 for a bungalow roof! Scandalous
My brother in law has had his done 3 times in 20years . Now he has leaks coming through a valley. I have noticed that the process does " remove " a part of the hard firing manufacturing process. Thus, reducing the life of the tiles ! My father used to make by hand, Plain tiles , he would dress into the bottom of the
mould, the appropriate sand colour. After ' FIRING "' it gave a hard glazed surface . Therefore, the washing process will certainly break this surface down, and shorten its life. SO DON'T DO IT!!!
My house is 130 years old , still have original tiles on the roof . No felt , still has some of the lime mortar in place but most has fallen out . A couple of half broken tiles , but no serious problem . Never had an issue . Like you say , if it’s not broken don’t fix it .
Nice I'd assume you half slates or clay tiles not concrete
So many comments are against this roof painting/cleaning.
Let me tell you people clean their roof because they just want it to be cleaned. The moss effect is so minimal on the tiles, but they can clog the gutters and whoever says they look good on the roof is blind :D
Yes the tiles lasts 100 years, your car coating would last a few decades too but still people get it washed every 2 weeks. The human body would also start cleaning itself after a time you don’t shower, but personally me still taking a shower daily :D
Obviously if I could pay for my waterbill I’d skip every other day. 😅😅
I hope people get my point here.
Long story short, the only scam here is to declare it will do soo good to your roof, the service is just a service that you can choose to take or not.
Fair enough if people are out to rip off others that's not right, but it does look nice when done and if done at a reasonable price and correctly I don't see the problem.
At last some sense spoken. I’m a roofer and advised people not to do this and guess what they go ahead and do it. A old roof is still a old roof even if you paint it. The price these people are charging as well for I little extra you could have a whole new roof. Waste of time and money. Exactly what I tell my customers. If it ain’t leaking what’s the problem.
I have a lower roof area over the dining room with Marley concrete flat tile on a 15 or so degree pitch so roof moss was starting to form I bought some stuff myself on Amazon sprayed it 3 years ago and still have no moss since. I know these companies are scam because they sell you a service for thousands of pounds when they spend £30 to buy the liquid so no special tools involved just a bit of work on a ladder. roof coating services: no thanks for me, but the moss cleaner does work.
If in doubt just add thatch.
Just had an argument with someone on UA-cam who “specialises” in this…. I’m a roofer and glad you can agree this is total bullshit :)
I had moss growing on my roof a few years back and had a chap remove the moss and spray the roof. In all fairness the ugly moss hasn’t grown back since which i am happy about
ugly moss? I love moss it is a miraculous plant
Some of these con merchants quoted the old couple next door £4800 to do a semi . I only found out because they said if you get your neighbour’s as well we’ll give you a discount . Alarm bells ringing subsequently I got both roofs renewed for less than £10,000.
the one thing I find is the birds love fecking the moss into the gutters which then makes then sag. I'd be happy if there was a gentle way of removing the moss off the roof.
If moss is making your gutters sag you need more brackets. More likely is the moss blocking the gutters causing water to back up. Again more brackets, birds need moss.
It is getting warmer, but it's also getting windier.
good for wind turbines then
Roger you old cynic, you sound like myself!! Great information, thank you
One of the travelling community’s favourite cons this one
Main problem I find with no felt, especially on Victorian era houses is the sand and cement falling onto the ceiling / insulation. Horrible horse hair stuff.
That was called torching and it was there to keep out wind blown rain and snow
All they do is jet wash the tiles, give it a couple of years and it will be back as it was.
We had this in my area, wasn't cheap, looks out of place and a waste of money.
NO. Stop save ya money.
When the Dodgy Bros knock at my door I tell them they can clean and paint my roof for free and I'll put a sign in my front yard for 90 days advertising their business. They always leave.
That is genius
I'm Sure you are old enough to remember 'turnerised roofing membrane' what a bloody mess they look now !
Nasty stuff.
No.
Never heard of it. Sounds dodgy 🤔
Seal the tiles is not a good idea. Under the tiles the mold is going to be happy. Trapping the mosture?
Can make your house unhabitable.
I clean roofs for a living and I can say that it is 90% for asthetic reasons and 10% to get rid of the moss so it doesn't constantly block the gutters.
I keep seeing new companies offering to pressure wash them too and that just seems stupid in my opinion. Blasting water on something that is designed to keep water out is a silly idea.
The only coating that I would recommend is a a biocide treatment, kills any organic growth and stops moss regrowing for upto 5 years.
Now wether or not it's worth it is down to the customer
You’re not a roofer so your opinion is irrelevant. If tiles are perished, I’d recommend a roof coating to preserve the tile especially concrete tiles. The granules and roof coating wear away causing tiles to perish. A roof coating is beneficial as a last resort.
Oh well if you are recommending it, say no more, I bow to your superior knowledge.
@@SkillBuilder it’s common sense mate. I will personally make a video on this and show the difference of a worn perished tile that’s been weathered. Weathered as the manufacturer protection has perished.
'They' tell us a lot of things.......🙄🙄
Regarding your last comment. Yes, the planet is getting warmer. And that's the _average_ over the _entire_ planet over the _entire_ year. Some places at times will get a lot warmer some a lot colder and many a lot wetter and when you average out the extremes you get a seemingly minor increase to the average. But it's those extremes that will mean more storms and flooding and more deadly heatwaves. Our buildings here will have to adapt. Other parts of the world may have to be abandoned.
Big con, I used to know a guy who did this and used ordinary masonry paint, hundred quid layout for a quick couple of grand return, quick easy money for con men to talk vulnerable into false claims about this wonder paint
If they have curly hair and an Irish accent stay clear.
