  • Creating a Pickaroon out of an old Axe. Watching the Videos of Hand crafted tools and Homesteading done by Wranglerstar has inspired me to create one of my own. I have always had a sore back picking up fire wood by hand after cutting and splitting, I believe I will have the advantage over the trees now. I hope you all enjoy the video, feel free to leave comments.

      Im just wondering, since you have a double headed axe you probaly know this.
      What is the actual usage of a double headed axe? I just cant of any practical usage in chopping wood with a double or going to war with a double.(not modern war ofc)

    • @Gnsellers77
      @Gnsellers77  10 років тому +8

      HorizonExer one side is usually a finer edge for chopping deep into the tree, and the other side is a wider edge for splitting or taking out the chunks of wood on the opposite swing. some people alternate on every other swing, and others just clear chunks every once in a while. The wider edge can also be used to limb where the wood is tougher making the edge last longer....hope that helps your question.

    • @phillipmiehm2580
      @phillipmiehm2580 9 років тому +3

      HorizonExer, a double bitted axe was used in warfare to allow the user to execute cuts on the return, as well as providing a second striking edge if the first should happen to become damaged. They weren't particularly common, but there are examples that exist.

      @tomjeffersonwasright2288 9 років тому +1

      Nick Sellers Double bitted axes allows you to start the day with two sharp edges. You can also have a very fine edge and a more chisel shaped edge for different kinds of cutting. They were popular with professional loggers years ago.

      Nick Sellers so you looked around and they were too expensive ... and then you spent $15 and $2000 worth of labor on it? lol, the video is popular though it seems. Wonder how much the ones you saw out there cost. It's a great looking pickaroon, hope nobody steals it. ... where do you live again?

    That is a really great use for an old beater axe head. You turned it into something that looks like John Neeman custom forged it! Personally I don't see the point in putting a mirror finish on a tool that is going to get scratched up immediately when put to it's proper use, but I love that you showed how it can be done. Hats off.

    • @Gnsellers77
      @Gnsellers77  9 років тому

      PhilIip that's not a stupid question, but to answer, im really not sure about that, it started out as a master mechanic boys axe. It would be interesting to know.Thanks for watching.

  • @ernieseedhouse9463
    @ernieseedhouse9463 9 років тому +1

    The point is easier to get out of the wood if it is flat wedge shape. It needs to be sharp enough to stick but the angular edges come out with a twist to the left or right. Twisting the hook in the wood enlarges the entry hole and allows for quick repetitive extractions. Been working with pickaroons since 1979.
