@@Fizhy You did brought up an interesting detail: Walton Lowe. I thought the newspaper article covering his death meant he canonically died but now that I'm rewatching that bit, it does feel weird considering in GTA 4 some police records of minor antagonists change depending on whether the player spares them or executes them. And just like Red Dead 1, that Rockstar game is loaded with an immense amount of details. Edit: My initial reaction upon seeing this video lays in the fact not many people are fond of theories regarding memorable characters of the Red Dead series. So seeing that to another person it made sense to some degree, made me question the theory since I thought it wasn't that good at first but gave it a shot anyway.
@@Cash27373Even then just because he’s shady doesn’t make him “bad”. It just means he’s willing to use unconventional tactics to keep Armadillo from becoming chaos. He’s basically a firm believer of “the ends justify the means”. It’s likely he was an outlaw himself that started using his talents for the law instead, which if anything makes him even more badass. Like Malloy said “you don’t hire saints to catch sinners”
Marshall Johnson is such a grounded and honest character, probably one of the most down to Earth NPCs in a Rockstar game. He scratches John's back because John scratched his, no ulterior motives. The idea that he was a criminal in a past life just makes me like him more.
I like the idea of criminal turned lawman in a setting like RDR. As another commenter pointed out, the Valentine sheriff in RDR2 said "you don't hire a saint to catch a sinner." A former outlaw who became a lawman to seek redemption would understand these gangs and their motives far better than some goody two shoes who became a lawman or bounty hunter simply to show off how good they are.
I love Marshall Johnson, he's such a cool character. I remember when I first played RD:R1, and that scene where John first met him played... it was so good, the acting, everything. That's when I realized this was a real Western, this was cinematic. Great scene.
Wyatt Earp made a deal with Cowboy Gang member Ike Clanton to capture known suspects of a stagecoach robbery, also members of the Cochise County Cowboys. But when a third unknown party killed their suspects, Ike Clanton became paranoid at the possibility of him being misunderstood for a rat (he technically was going to be, but anyway), so he spread rumors surrounding this robbery, particularly ones implicating Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp himself in it. Wyatt Earp made that deal for political reasons, he wanted to win the elections and become Sheriff, I think it was? The main idea here is that they both share some similarities.
He made some bad decisions after his first wife died but once he started, Wyatt Earp was the best lawman in the west, (he tamed Dodge City) until criminals crippled one brother of his and killed another and the justice he defended for so long failed him. So he handled it himself. I can't condemn him, especially for the time he lived in.
I think the reason the Mashal killed the Walton gang leader is probably to avoid something like what the O'driscolls had done so many times. Think about it would you want your town attacked brutally like even Saint Denis was going to be and other areas were.
Thank you Fizhy you are such a hard worker between decades and your channel there never seems to be a end of the content flow you have to be constantly editing and recording just know we appreciate all the hard work

@@degamegang8262 John wasn't complient, there's no indication he could be turned into an asset, especially for the government. Aside from that, Ross killed him for the fame of officially killing every single wanted member of the gang or atleast playing some role in their deaths.

Just to add to the conversation, RDR1 had many reoccurring random encounters that would often spawn riding around, and could be done multiple times. One of them that comes to mind is the lawman who has prisoners escape from a prison transport wagon. It's always two prisoners going in opposite directions while fleeing the scene when you pull up. The lawman is usually in an injured stance requesting assistance. You can usually kill them both, kill one, and capture the other, and or possibly capture both before they get too far away. Upon completing the encounter successfully in which you've captured at least one escaped prisoner, the lawman will thank you and then proceed to execute the recaptured prisoner(s) with his gun. I bring this up just for the sake that the game's own world implies that it wouldn't be a stretch for Johnson to have "Defended himself" from the leader of the Walton Gang, and fabricate a story in which the gang leader was killed by Johnson after capture.
It also makes sense in a purely pragmatic way He has a lot on his plate. "Clearing" a bit off said plate makes his life easier and means he can give more attention elsewhere.
In this time, all you need is a good lawyer in some country courthouse to get the criminal off f the crime, so this could also be a way of "taking out the trash" before it gets to all the red tape & procedures of standard law
Waltons reported death by gunshot even if he was captured alive is likely just a developer oversight but there's a possibility you didn't consider and that's Walton could have tried to escape on the ride back to Armadillo, forcing Marshal Johnson to shoot him
I would just like to say. If I was in an outlaw gang. I would spread rumors about the Marshall to get people not to tell him things about the gang because they think that hes on the take. Also if everyone already things the Marshall is with the gang it might make it more likely for him to actually take the money and be on the take.
Thanks for this video. One aspect I’m glad you mentioned about Johnson early on is to quite rightfully question what allegiance(s) he would need to have if he (a) is lawman paid by the railroad/enterprise and (b) clearly needs to compromise based on the lack of resources required to maintain order. I agree with that these points are probably out of the scope of your video but also are important and are explored elsewhere e.g. look at the landscape that inspires the narratives behind Robocop and much cyberpunk (where OCP and large corps are effectively the railroad) and issues faced in most modern police tv shows (public perception, resources etc). It’s good point that RDR and RDR2 in a small way were able to emphasise that these were issues faced in the old west as well as in the modern day /later fiction.
There was a lawman/outlaw by the name of Henry Plummer who jumped both sides of the fence until he got caught extorting people and was killed in Montana. I suggest you look him up because it’s an interesting story and there’s no shortage of guys like him.
Good luck deciphering those hieroglyphics. But yeah, it does say "I've got our goods past the house (officer?)" -- the house being the one depicted in the map.
Modern armadillo is probably just a cracked concrete parking lot hellscape full of meth and dollar stores and like one Wild West history museum desperately cashing in on the fact that John Marston went there.

You should do more from just red dead redemption. There are a lot of hidden mysteries in the first one as well. I'll submit a couple when I get the chance, awesome video.
The gang's money being hidden in the same place the marshall hid "stolen goods" could mean he put their money (which is stolen) away there for safekeeping.

I never heard that theory. It doesn’t really make sense tho because Preston is very honorable and instantly hates you if you become a raider yourself. Regardless it’s kind of confirmed that the Marshall was actually taking bribes from local gangs but he only did it for Armadillos safety on top of personal gain, so he’s meant to be both good and bad
16:10 I think when he says yes you do deals with outlaws, he was referring to John. Because canonically, John was supposed to get/is famous in the RDR world. Even before the end. This can be known by Seth, and Nigel west dickens saying people have been talking about him.
All Star RDR content as always. All I want for Xmas, or a Birthday, or before I ride off into the sunset, is an RDR 2 & RDR sequenced production remastered for PS5. If it had added content like a fleshed out Guarma and/or an expansion of some story lines like the Mayor of Strawberry etc., that would be icing on the perfect cake & I'd pay large for it. I'd play that game regularly until I can no longer pick up a controller.
Marshal Johnson having been appointed to Armadillo for 14 years doesn't make sense though, since we would and should have seen him both in 1899 and 1907 at one point. This should bring into question how old the treasure is, and if he had any involvement with the Del Lobo gang before 1911. Wish Rockstar had furthered his story in RDR2 even if we didn't get to see him. To my knowledge, there's no newspaper scraps or NPCs that even mention him in New Austin.
There’s a letter in his office in the epilogue you can happen upon and it says that Marshall is “on vacation” while the Cholera breakout blows over. So it’s still consistent but obviously they needed an excuse for him to not be there so John doesn’t meet him before 1911 and cause a paradox. And New Austin in 1899 also being affected by cholera is non canon since it was obviously scrapped and the game tries its hardest to avoid the player going there before the epilogue and I take online with a grain of salt bc it’s clear Rockstar stopped paying attention to all continuity details when it comes to Online (like Sadie owning the very first horse Arthur gets despite it being explicitly said in the story that it wasn’t hers and belonged to one of the Odriscolls)
This character has intrigued me since I met him the office. It’s hard to know if he’s genuine or not. He has combat experience and probably had a story similar to John Marston.
Better yet, save up for a PC so you can have all your games on one system! They can be pricey depending on the specs you get, but if you build it yourself (find a tutorial or see if any of your friends know how) you'll save a good bit versus a prebuilt.
I’m pretty sure in rdr 2, if you kill everyone in the del lobo hideout you won’t get any bounties for del lobo. Mind you I went with John after the last mission to kill somebody if yanno what I mean. It’s rlly weird like I haven’t even seen any at tumbleweed either
Would love to see a rdr3 following the story of marshall johnson where he was a gunslinger, who indirectly brought the demise of his own town. As the game progresses you see the town slowly turn into the “living hell” he works so hard to avoid. This may happen around the time of rdr2. Eventually, his redemption is establishing, or rescuing, Armadillo where he ultimately becomes sheriff. Would be fun to see a repeat of some missions from rdr1, but playing as johnson. Also a good reason to bring back both the Mexico map, and the entire rdr2 map.
RDR2 map plus Mexico on the modern RAGE engine would be awesome. RDR2's version of New Austin looked great but I'm certain they've made even more upgrades to the engine's visual fidelity capabilities during the development of GTA 6.

My thought is when Johnson was younger, he once rode with the Walton gang so he knew members of the group, thus his seeming unwillingness to engage them without backup. This would also explain why he’s good in a shootout and why the map might have his initials on it. He was tasked with burying the stolen goods but before the gang could collect, something happened and they had to split up. He and a couple others made a map to the treasure and hid that map, but in the breakup, Johnson took the opportunity to ditch the gang. Because of his skill and knowledge of the area, he was hired as sheriff and now that he’s a lawman, he has no care to collect the stolen goods but also can’t let the Walton gang get it
When The Marshall says he doesn't want to be no policeman, it is important to note that he isn't a policeman. Policeman is an entirely different thing compared to a Marshall. A Marshall can function as a policeman, but they are far more than simply that.
the first mission Marshall ~Johnson stays back and dont shoot at the Waltons. hmmmm i remember a hood where we use to say let the good gang stay to keep the other idiotas out. He for sure has something going with the the gang, Waltons and Johnson have a defense treaty of Armadillo
I think the clue is in the name of the place he hid the treasure. Rio Del Lobo. A gang that was only present in RDR2. It's possible that the Walton Gang might have had a connection with the Del Lobos near their or even happened to have been created by someone that survived the gang destruction. Marshall Johnson might have run with the Del Lobos, hid the treasure and was condemned to do the Government's bidding as punishment instead of being hanged or incarcerated. It's also possible that he knew what happened with the unnamed gang in Tumbleweed taking over after the Sheriff there got too reckless and high and mighty as a dictator as seen in Red Dead 2. This could be another reason he's not trying to make a completely crime-free town. He knows what happened to the Sheriff that tried to take complete control over a town that ended up dying out, possibly also in part because of a gang taking over the mines.
I had a gut feeling from the dialect and townsfolk talk, that there is more than what it appears for Johnson. Some things are also contrary to what popular culture tells with western lawmen. Not all towns had a jail, as it costs a lot to build so some lawmen would have outlaws and captured fugitives roped tied to a tree when transporting to the law, also in part as not all lawmen had access to very early hand restraints. Some even are imprisoned and being under watchful eye in their own homes. Some lawmen did have a past in crime and so it does give them an edge in gunfights, insight in catching criminals or tricks used by some.
Hey Fizhy, you know anything about if Lake Isabella has connections to the missing Isabella girl that noone can find? That would maybe make a good video if so.
*I think Marshal Johnson is mostly a no-nonsense realist.* If he were a moralist he would have tried to directly stop Walton's gang or gangs before it even if he was outnumbered, probably resulting in the death of him, his sparse deputies, and many of the residents of Armadillo. Because Marshall Johnson can see things clearly as they are, and seems intelligently reserved enough to calculate the powers he has, and hasn't over the situation; I think he mostly tolerates the Walton's gang as long as they don't push it too far in his town. He has no power to completely stop them, so he compromises to make at least some deals to keep the citizens of Armadillo safe until he feels he has the power to make changes. In the end his main objectives are this: 1. Keep the citizens of Armadillo safe 2. Clear the county from outlaws 3. Gather a little pension for his old days to never have to do this line of work ever again So Marshal Johnson is a *good but corrupt Marshall* who tries to do good, but accept he has to be as dirty as his surroundings makes him to be to at least make some positive changes in the end. Which he eventually succeeded in. He would have not survived Armadillo if he only tried to make positive changes but did not accept the reality he faced.
Thought it was established that was “M. 28” on the map? Indicating a date (may 28) or map number. There are some high res images out there that makes it clearer.
Marshall Johnson could have just seen himself as judge, jury, and executioner like the Sherrie from tumble weed, so could of shot Walton when he got back (like that scene in tumbleweed with one of the bounties), but it is pre sus. Maybe he was just tying up loose ends. As it was said, you'd have to make some compromises being in that position in that environment and world

And New Austin in 1899 also being affected by cholera is non canon since it was obviously scrapped and the game tries its hardest to avoid the player going there before the epilogue
and I take online with a grain of salt bc it’s clear Rockstar stopped paying attention to all continuity details when it comes to Online (like Sadie owning the very first horse Arthur gets despite it being explicitly said in the story that it wasn’t hers and belonged to one of the Odriscolls)
This character has intrigued me since I met him the office. It’s hard to know if he’s genuine or not. He has combat experience and probably had a story similar to John Marston.
Marshall Johnson was one of My favourite characters in RDR 1
Very well written
One of my favourite characters in Rockstar.
Man I wish I they would release this game for PS4 or PS5 no matter the graphics. I've thought about getting a PS3 just solely for RDR1.
What 😳 bro you can play the older game on your new generation though so just buy the game
I'm almost positive it's for sale on all 3 platforms
I got an Xbox one back in 2018 just to play it again lol, a shame sony didn’t bring it back for ps4/ps5 as well
Better yet, save up for a PC so you can have all your games on one system! They can be pricey depending on the specs you get, but if you build it yourself (find a tutorial or see if any of your friends know how) you'll save a good bit versus a prebuilt.
You always make the best videos. Keep up the great work.
Secrets or not, Marshal Johnson is one of my top favorite RDR characters.
Marshal is the goat. He knows he has to do politics with outlaw gangs to save the majority of the town.
I like that the marshal doesn't betray john or have any motives. He helps John if john helps him, a favour for a favour
Your videos are top shelf! Love em!
There’s only 2 Del Lobo bounties and they’re both in Tumbleweed. They also don’t really relate to gang hideouts
Love rockstar 10+ years after playing a game you find out new things or new myths
Great video, Fizhy!
There is so much content for RDR1 that no youtuber has made videos on.
Im sorry but it definitely says "M. 28" on the treasure map. Probably march or may 28th
Your videos are so good to eat and sleep too. It sounds disrespectful about sleeping to them but your tone of speaking is very calming and videos don’t have any loud noises Instead with nice ambiance.
Glad I'm not alone here , something about these videos help me sleep same with some other rdr2 youtubers
@@pyrogunslinger1877 same, so many people say it’s rude or disrespectful but we are still listening to the video and actually, I sometimes don’t sleep and watch it instead if I’m not tired.
@@Sopranos990 definitely, have you tried watching real pixels videos on rdr2, they always help me fall asleep. For some reason Video game analysis videos have been helping me sleep for a year now
@@pyrogunslinger1877 kinda, i usually watch DarkviperAUs pacifist currently.
@@Sopranos990 ah does that help to go sleep? I've watched his lore videos before and those are great
okay that's it.. im paying a visit back to rdr1. Great video.
Because of his skill and knowledge of the area, he was hired as sheriff and now that he’s a lawman, he has no care to collect the stolen goods but also can’t let the Walton gang get it
i dont know what you did but the editing in this video looks really good
Only real difference is I decided to apply a LUT on the RDR2 footage to match the more washed out colour scheme of RDR.
Thank you for the video! ❤
Even though he isn’t really a major character in the rdr series he is one of my favorites
Your voice is very pleasant on the ears
When The Marshall says he doesn't want to be no policeman, it is important to note that he isn't a policeman. Policeman is an entirely different thing compared to a Marshall. A Marshall can function as a policeman, but they are far more than simply that.
More authority and don't really answer to anyone out side of federal officials so
I don't think that comment was literal.
Yeah you could tell he has a shady past the moment you meet him. At this point, nothing will surprise me at all
the first mission Marshall ~Johnson stays back and dont shoot at the Waltons. hmmmm i remember a hood where we use to say let the good gang stay to keep the other idiotas out. He for sure has something going with the the gang, Waltons and Johnson have a defense treaty of Armadillo
Was playing his videos on autoplay and then heard this and thought to myself: hey, I don't recignise this, this is good.
9:40 Pretty sure that says "M. 28", which would make me think March 28th
I’m honest surprised you didn’t bring up Slim Grant during the video.
Hey Fizhy, you know anything about if Lake Isabella has connections to the missing Isabella girl that noone can find? That would maybe make a good video if so.
A Great Video Again Keep Up The Work!
In the end his main objectives are this:
1. Keep the citizens of Armadillo safe
2. Clear the county from outlaws
3. Gather a little pension for his old days to never have to do this line of work ever again
So Marshal Johnson is a *good but corrupt Marshall* who tries to do good, but accept he has to be as dirty as his surroundings makes him to be to at least make some positive changes in the end. Which he eventually succeeded in. He would have not survived Armadillo if he only tried to make positive changes but did not accept the reality he faced.
to me the beginning of the passage of text looks like M. 28
This is really reminding me of the RDR2's traitor situation, I never known about this detail.
protagonist material for a prequel game ngl bro got it in him and he got that doc holiday flair with the fit 😂
As it was said, you'd have to make some compromises being in that position in that environment and world
What if Johnson is red Harlow
I got an ad for RDR1 on PC and it had the Marshall in it lmao
You KNOW you got that fall out new Vegas VOICE and you know WHAT PATROLLING THE MOJAVE DESERT ALMOST MAKES YOU WISH FOR A NUCLEAR WINTER ☃️ ❄️
You should make videos covering the gangs of the first game since you covered all but one for the second.
Which one did I miss?
@@Fizhy the foremen brothers
@@Kyle-nz8fu Note sure if there's enough background to cover.
@@KC.45 never stopped him before. Considering what little he’s had to work with on other topics like the Watson boys.
@@Kyle-nz8fu True. Fizhy could add that Anthony Foreman's facial structure is similar to Red Harlow's from RDR1 multiplayer and no one would complain lol.
The asmr story lore of RDR2.
This sounds like a CSI Investigation 😂😂
Your channel has me contemplating whether red dead just has a couple loop holes or is incredibly detailed (rdr2 is my favourite game either way)
Both
Another great video
He definitelly reminded me of Sheriff Cobb from Silverado
I found the treasure by Rio Del Lobo on the first try but it was also the hardest one to find of all the treasures.
Don’t forget the deadliest epidemic of all.
LUMBAGO!
Sometimes, being the Good Guy means making what most folk would call the wrong choice...
14 years later... I can finally find out what the fuck is wrong with Marshall Johnson.
Usually use these sort of videos to fall asleep to, but now I'm in bed watching this like 😳
