I just want to say that, after this video, I downloaded the complete "Little House" series of books to my Kindle. As a Brit I'd thought it was just a TV series, like The Waltons, and dismissed it. The books, however, are _magic,_ charmingly written, and explain a great deal about the US mindset, which confuses me as a foreigner. Thanks to all the commenters who mentioned the books: you have introduced me to a rare pleasure.
When I was young I remember once when we had gone to the grocery store my mom was saying how expensive the groceries had gotten. She said that it was almost $7 for just 3 bags of groceries. We had our own pork, beef, big garden and milk cow .We bought coffee, flour, corn meal and eggs as basics and sandwich bread ,peanut butter, bologna or hotdogs as treats. We only went to the store when we had basically ran out of all of the basic items usually going to the store once a month. If the cow was dry my dad would stop for milk after work,he had to have milk every day. My dad worked at a minimum wage job building furniture ,raised tobacco and beef calves. He received a case of 100 apples and 100 oranges at his work for Christmas, they were so good. I didn’t know at the time that we were eating the finest meat and organic food.
I really liked the Little House on the Prairie idea. I watched another video also that talked about birthday parties for kids. We had cake and ice cream. We played pin the tail on the donkey, clothes pins in a bottle and some race games. the cake was homemade or a mix. We had paper hats, very small prizes for the games and every kid left with a party bag with a bit of candy and maybe a balloon. Nothing more was needed. It did not cost much. I am 73 years old and shutter at the way birthdays are managed now!
My mom was a genius. When I was in elementary school we all walked home for lunch. So my mom would plan a birthday lunch. She had something simple like hotdogs and chips, followed by cake or cupcakes. We would have time to play a game, then back to school. I don’t recall gifts. It was fun to have the girls in class over like that. And we would invite all the girls! She did the same for my brother. As a parent the simplicity is what I appreciate the most as I look back
I’m in the middle of raising young kids now and we do the at home thing, homemade cake, some fun things from the dollar tree, an activity, and the kids just have fun! 😊
I love the encouragement. My husband and I will BOTH be on social security in January. I must drastically cut my food budget--which is already minimal. Thanks so much for your helpful videos.
Thank you..I loved watching the series in the 70’s ..I never knew it was based on true stories until recently. I wish I had known all the frugal skills I have now back 30 yrs ago..our lives would be a lot different and definitely no debt. Living paycheck to paycheck is scary to me..this last week I crocheted my potholders, wash clothes, made toilet fizzies, made soap for the first time for my new to me homemade laundry soap..the ingredients/supplies cost a fraction unless buying from the $1.25 store..this not only saved money but gets rid of clutter under my kitchen sink and bathroom sink as I also make my all purpose cleaner which is just citrus peels infused in vinegar then diluted w/water. Now onto making dishwashing soap and dishwashing tabs and switching to all cloth except TP. I’m able to keep paying down debt by just making my own things from ingredients and craft items I already have.
Great advice. My kids are adults but still live at home. My husband and I didn't have conversations about how we were struggling financially when they were younger and it really did them a disservice. Now, we are open and honest with them and try to get them to understand that money doesn't grow on trees and you sometimes have to work harder than you want to.
I LOVE the Little House series and books and still watch it all the time. I love the simplicity of their Christmas celebrations. It was out of necessity, but the gratefulness of the family is beautiful.
And, That show is completely Fiction, the father actually abandoned the family. Read the Book for Reality of their lives. Very good Plan for living skills though and Saving, etc.
Also remember that Laura Ingalls Wilder lived on this kind of budget for a much longer time than most people will - she lived healthily for 90 years!!! So, this lifestyle of frugality must work well!!! And on top of this, she even spent 8 of her years without Almanzo , as a widow!
I am trying to get daughter to stop with the expensive B-Day parties for grandsons. Getting back to basic home party, games, home made craft to take home, cake n ice cream! Hard to convince to make the change.
I do love the little house series(just the books) farmer boy is one great one also especially when mr. wilder gives almanzo money and teaches him how to grow it! So many great lessons in that book 😊
My mom have a lot of proverbs and axioms she would tell us. “Never a debtor, be”. “Don’t count your chickens until they hatch”. You can make a purse out of a sows ear”. “If you roll in the mud with pigs you come up dirty.” “”Don’t spend money you don’t have.” And, so on. She wasn’t obnoxious, it was a way of explaining consequences. She had a way of not preaching just passing on proven history. In a way it made me value history and studying history to learn and to see repeating cycles. There are just enough tales of using debt to get ahead that people are fooled that it will work for everyone. But those cases are more like winning the lottery. They will say 1 in 10 win or 2 in 10 but “slow and steady wins the race.” Lol!
To keep us kids making good choices with friends my mom would say “ You lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas” of course we thought that was a hoot. But really she meant to build quality friendships that would help you in life not hinder.
Hi Sarah, I recently found out that “Little House” was filmed here - and Simi Valley, California. I missed an autograph signing, but I’m looking forward to their 50th anniversary celebration! I want to get Nellie‘s autograph. Man, that actress played a brat so well.
Yes. So wholesome and full of life lessons. I read the series to my kids when they were younger and that was a sweet time to spend together. I bought the books second hand. 👍🏼thanks again for your videos. I’m a new subscriber and I love being frugal and intentional. ❤
If you've read the books, when they were still in the big woods, they made their own maple sugar. You get more money selling your eggs to people than to a store. After all, they need to resell them and need to make money as well.
@@saraconklinfrozenpennies between that book and another book called Miracles on Maple Hill, I got the desire to try and make my own. This past year was a disappointment because it wasn't cold enough to get enough sap. But I was still able to make about a pint. You can also tap other trees, like walnut, birch and sycamore. I haven't tried them yet. Don't have the trees nor the time.
There are videos out there of a museum that has the real homes/buildings of Laura Ingalls Wilder. So cool! Very tiny and they had really nice (fancy) for the times decor. Supplementing your fresh food with a victory garden is a good idea. Thankfully my dad's mom from Poland canned, made her own ketchup, cooked from scratch and had a very nice garden complete with red grapes. I sat in the kitchen with her for hours just watching. Then I began to learn each one including mending, sewing on a machine. Now I know how to use milk going bad to make cheese, make pickles, laundry detergent, butter, etc. The absolute worst manual tasks are bathing and laundering. Many fabrics and things we use are not made to be hand scrubbed or washed much less last more than 1 year. If budget is done right and you have several layers of backup should not need cash. It is hard to use or trade paper money for goods, services and a lot of stores will not take cash or coin anymore. But my budget with one income in the most expensive state in the union. is everything!!
In 1957 i was 4 i remember Dad at A&P store saying at cashier $14, for a weeks groceries for 2 adults n 6 kids they've got to get a hold of this inflation. Now you cant buy 1 meal n its gona get aot worse
