I remember when spotting a Tesla used to be a rare occurrence, now I see at least one parked in every parking lot that I go to, almost without fail. It really is the most popular luxury at the moment vehicle and priced in such a way that even normal people who really want one can afford it.
@@DeeAy09 No, they aren't. There's nothing luxurious about the inside of a Tesla. The price tag is for the technology, but the cars themselves are not made of high quality materials nor are they even properly checked for quality assurance. The technology and the fact they're the "first" mass produced electrical vehicle that doesn't look ugly is what makes them so expensive.
@@paradiso4562 Tesla is considered a Luxury brand. It has more to do with price tag than materials and/or technology in Tesla's case. A quick Google search will tell you it's a luxury brand. Just because you disagree doesn't mean it is not a luxury brand by definition.
@@DeeAy09 You don't know what luxury means then. You can Google a million different things and get different answers, that means absolutely nothing. Teslas are cheap on the inside and competitive on the outside. It's the brand recognition that gives them their price point. Elon's interview with the Babylon Bee (a company that writes parody articles) was legitimately more insightful, thought provoking, and mature than his interview with TIME. This is where we are at in 2021.
Completely agree. Just watched it. I think interviewers think they have to be robotic and professional when talking to Elon when that is just not true.
Absolutely agree. I've seen both and the Bee has actually informative and entertaining conversation, the Time one just complains about him for having money and influence. Also, it's beyond stupid and a blatant lie to claim he pays "almost no taxes;" he's paid more in tax this one year than any other human being in recorded history. I mean you can argue about if you think he should be taxed more or less, but putting out easily verifiably false info to push political agenda is bullshit.
Elon Musk is playful, and Babylon Bee tapped into that. He's a serious man involved with endeavors with serious consequences, plus he concentrates so hard that his facial expressions are hard for mere mortals to read. But he wants to be a fun guy as well as a serious contributor. A Time interview isn't like an appearance on SNL, or a date with his singer GF.
@@justingolden21 Its not a blatant lie at all, Hes traditionally paid very little tax because he had very little income. He even said himself on the Bee interview he paid nothing in 2018 due to being in credit from 2017 lol. People really should make it a point to understand at least the bare minimums of how money, tax and the economy works, you included. His benefit to society is far greater than any tax he would pay from a income. Through jobs, tech advancements etc etc. But politicians and idiots like to cling to try paint all the rich as these evil people lol.
Imagine having Starships in the background and not asking a single question about that. Those will arguably be one of humanity's greatest creations one day
You should look up "Starship debunked" the idea basically only exists on paper and almost all of the technology for it doesn't exist and their plans aren't even possible so they have to rethink the whole rocket.
Not their fault fully. Mostly for the tesla crash. It was pushed to the news because people wanted to short tesla even more than it is. Cars crash all the time, just because it was on auto pilot doesn't mean you shouldn't be paying attention to the road.
Well... all the stuff they were talking about happened in the last YEAR which is why he's been chosen for the title. Everyone already understands he's revolutionized tech and all that bc it's old news.
Wrong. Person of the year could be for a number of reasons. Good…bad…ugly…influential…controversial….etc etc etc. Putin, Newt Gingrich. George Bush Jr. Bill Clinton. Ya see?
Elon sees the terms CEO, CFO, etc are meaningless titles, as to be a corporation you are only reqd to have a pres, Vp, sect/treas, and a director. The story is he filled in the blank as a joke. That's Elon!
They also messed up by solely asking him business questions…. Elon musk is an unbelievably rare individual psychologically speaking. Elon musk isn’t a business man, he’s an unbelievably creative individual WITH businesses.
Glad he gets some recognition for single-handedly starting the new private space race and the electric car revolution, despite 15 years of skepticism, getting shorted and laughed at.
'single-headedly' what a good way to ignore the thousands of engineers he has employed and the fact he didn't found tesla or design the original car....
@@mathewferstl7042 I'm not ignoring them. Everyone knows he didn't do it alone, there is no need to say it every time. By single-handedly I don't mean him personally but the movements he started. Some of us can see how dumb they are but eventually everyone will. Little kids will say "Mom, why were people except for Elon Musk so stupid in 2021?" This will not age well.
The different between Elon & all of the other multi-billionaires is that we actually see the human in him. He doesn't shift his views or filter what he says in order to fit into mainstreams agenda. That's why he's constantly evolving.
CEOs don’t ride the breeze they all have to bust there ass to be where they are, he’s just also a scientist and happens to be a genius which adds to his success
There are more CEOs with engineering degrees than any other degree, but Elon musk does not have an engineering degree, nor is he an engineer. He's good at hiring talented people and making high level decisions for a business. You and the other musketeers do realize it isn't Elon who comes up with the ideas right? Just because a CEO tweets about a product or project doesn't mean they actually came up with the idea...
Elon is just as deserving as ANYONE ELSE. Anyone who thinks this award isn't deserved is CRAZY. 1. He oversaw the greatest needle move in Space in the last 50 years 2. Became richest (on the books) person of ALL TIME 3. Oversaw Tesla's continued success 4. Stood up for what he believed in even though now people attack him purely out of political bias 5. Oversaw first fully private crewed space launch EVER, which also raised over 200 million dollars for St. Jude and the list continues.
Elon deserves much more than this award. The undeniable truth is this: When Elon started on all of the prominent journeys he is known for (Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, Neuralink, The Boring Company, SolarCity, etc - which are more than most can ever do in one lifetime), they were ideas many people never ever thought would succeed. Musk didn't just start successful companies. He went after ideas that next to no one thought would work. He has broken ceiling after ceiling through sheer human enterprise and brilliance. Sure, government funding helps, but that is the case for most large companies with a large R&D focus. The man's ideas continue to change our future in outstanding ways. Not to mention he is so frequently featured in the media, which contributes significantly to what TIME considers in giving this award. It is unimaginable that all of what he has done has been achieved by one man in 20 odd years. I am alive to see it, and I am inspired by it.
Elon Musk is probably the only likable, approachable and thoughtful billionaire that ever existed. I can't think of any person who is more deserving than him. It is very rare to find someone as wealthy as Elon Musk, who generally cares about our planet, and our existence as human beings.
I'm convinced Elon Musk is one of the most misunderstood people currently alive. One has to remember the guy has an IQ on par with Einstein: he just doesn't see the world the same way most regular people do. In my opinion, whilst he's certainly not perfect, he is one of, if not the prime person to support in this day and age. If you look at the sheer size of the accomplisments he and his companies have made so far, can't you just do anything but wonder what the future will hold, especially with the goals they are striving towards? People will always doubt if what he's doing is even possible, or insinuate this is all just for his own ego, but you got to remember that most people who bet against him in the past have been proven wrong. And yes, he may be the world richest man according to net worth, but honestly, i would be extremely suprised if it turn out he does any of what he does for personal gain. Glory, maybe, yes, but first of all for the progression of humankind. What kind of billionaire lives in a rental home and pours every bit of cash he makes of his stocks straight back into his companies? What kind of billionaire sits together with his (brilliant) engineers at the design table of the most advanced rocket yet, changing and itterating as he goes? One thing is for sure: Elon is not just a regular rich smart guy who got lucky. You may dissagree with him, find him immature, despise him because he holds so much wealth, even believe him to be evil, but you cannot deny he is changing the world for the better. Let's just all take a moment to appreciate that. And let's hope he's just getting started.
Whatever he is he is not even comparable to Einstein, they are very different sorts of human. Einstein was a genetic freak with a physically different brain to other humans, noticeably more cortex area. I have seen no claims about Musk possessing the same neurological characteristics.
It's crazy when the people who don't really like you very much still give you "Person of the Year" because your achievements have so obviously earned it. Molly Ball seemed to be on the verge of gritting her teeth when talking about his success.
This man will be remembered and will go down in history. Pretty typical of interviews with Elon. He’s so authentic that people see him as an easy target for attacking. Most people would fight back but he just thinks about the question and answers it.
He is probably one of the few people who's worth listening to. The amount of stuff this guy has managed to execute or set in motion is probably unmatched in the entire human history.

Elon seems like he genuinely wants to push humanity forward, and that is worthy of admiration. I hope Starship works out--it will be extremely exciting and inspirational for the entire world. Tesla cars seem like great vehicles as well, and when they make a cheaper model I'm sure they'll become much more prevalent. There's nothing wrong with building wealth along the way.
They are making 30.5% gross margin on the model 3/Y so once they produce enough of them to satisfy demand the price will be reduced for sure. Hopefully next year with Giga Berlin and Austin.

Most of us know at least at second-hand of that sort of thing, someone good at what they do, who succeeds. It's not ugly. Much is made of him "owning" an emerald mine, but it was just some shares in the thing (maybe quite a few, but a minority stake anyway). As a teenager he ceased to further benefit from the family's resources, as I understand it, and moved to Canada with $2,000 in his pocket. He worked as a manual labourer at first, on a farm and at a sawmill in Saskatchewan. He lived a frugal and bare-bones existence for several more years as a university student in Canada and Pennsylvania until he made some money in his 20s. He had racked up $100k in student loans. This is what I've gathered from my reading. It is necessarily incomplete, as is yours no doubt, but even if he did get money from his family-I've heard that he did ($40k from his mother) and I've heard that he didn't-I don't think that counts against him. If you lent or gave some money to your child, would you then think less of them, or think it right if others thought less of them? I doubt it, but if you did, let's hear why. Person of the decade. Where policy makers throw bills and budgets at problems, Elon is the man doing the legwork through private enterprise. Whether starting a private space race, innovating on the electric vehicle, green energy solutions, robotics, artificial intelligence and automation. He does it all. No single individual in history can claim to have furthered humanity on so many frontiers than Elon Musk.
He is a person who is not paying his share of taxes...imagine what other people could achieve with their money, in a tax free environment? Musk's wealth comes from actual taxpayers buying his products...and paying taxes on the money that they give to him. Not paying his taxes makes him a free loader...not person of the year.
Tesla- he didn't found the company nor it is his vision, private space race- it is only area elon has actually achieved something, Green energy solutions- lies lies lies, Robotics- showcasing a man with spandex and cgi animation is kinda laughable, Ai and automation- his "self driving" is still unreliable and incomplete or i shall i say still in " pre-alpha" and his neurolink is just a overpromise gimmick shit. Edit: his self driving shit is banned from several countries cause it's unsafe, his vegas Hyperloop was laughably failure, he promised about tesla truck back in 2017 which he claimed to be 10 times better than diesel truck.
One thing I really love about Elon Musk is that despite being the richest person in the world, he's completely down to earth and people are drawn to him. He just has that something.
It's interesting that in the interview there was no discussion of his work on Solar City, HyperLoops, Starlink, the Boring Company and Tesla Power Walls. Each of these by themselves have massive potential to fundamentally change how we live our lives and this is in addition to SpaceX, Tesla and PayPal. There are very few men who have demonstrated this almost unique combination of intellect, vision and drive. We may not see it again for another 100 years.
Agreed but I'm fairly sure what Time has posted here is just a brief, "highlight" version (12:42 with all the extra comments from others). I'd be interested in seeing the full interview.
Thats because hyperloop and the boring company are all failures dude, all the hyper loop projects are cancelled, solar city is embroiled in a fraud lawsuit and massively behind schedule, and also forget about the tesla trucks that are 2 years behind their delivery date.

So what about Mars? We need changes now! @@nickolasgk630 Well Elon Musk isn't focused on that. There are tons of people focused on saving the planet. The idea that we can save it is idealistic. We would have to change human behavior which won't happen.
@@nickolasgk630 Most solutions we have for problems on earth were actually found in space, or exploration in general. People who keep asking us to concentrate on earth do not understand this and in my view have very small horizons. Without explorers or technology, if we wanted to just "stick with solving our problems first" The brits wouldve not found the Americas, there will be no UK in the first place because they wouldve been fighting with one another instead of uniting against Europe. There would be almost no internet, or extremely limited. There would be no GPS. There are problems on earth, and others are working on it. Elon can concentrate on the big picture stuff to ensure humanity's long term survival. We have had more than 2000 years on earth to solve world hunger and all that, It is not a money issue, its a human nature issue. *BTW for the point on GPS as to how useful or why we even need it. The car existed log before GPS, and GPS actually now saves fuel due to more efficient trips being planned for people, which cuts emissions and saves time and money, even for the lower class.

Elon's interview with the Babylon Bee (a company that writes parody articles) was legitimately more insightful, thought provoking, and mature than his interview with TIME. This is where we are at in 2021.
Completely agree. Just watched it. I think interviewers think they have to be robotic and professional when talking to Elon when that is just not true.
massive truth

4. Stood up for what he believed in even though now people attack him purely out of political bias
5. Oversaw first fully private crewed space launch EVER, which also raised over 200 million dollars for St. Jude
and the list continues.

People in Time have a very shallow research on Elon.
If TIMES really wanted to honor Elon Musk, they should have left out those speakers who were disingenuous in speaking about the man they called “Person of the Year”. Those other people, besides the interviewer, were so unnecessary and misinforming. This video failed to honor Elon Musk but at least he still got the title he is well deserving of. No one has worked more selflessly than him for the future of humanity. He is not someone who only tells others to work darn hard. He exemplifies hard work! He is not conceited nor prideful but the most genuine person who just happens to be the worlds richest man who owns no home; who works several full time jobs with the highest stress level; who has been making history many times over with never been done before, impossible achievements…

Edit:
Also for anyone bother to read this. That whole 1/3 seems more emotional than factual. Books like “The millionaire next door” have shown that around 80% of millionaires did not receive their fortune from their parents or trust funds. Most are first gen millionaires
@@cowmath77 His dad was a hard-working engineer who had the energy to also be a businessman. He was supposedly bad to his family, but also supposedly earned his money fairly. Most of us know at least at second-hand of that sort of thing, someone good at what they do, who succeeds. It's not ugly.
Much is made of him "owning" an emerald mine, but it was just some shares in the thing (maybe quite a few, but a minority stake anyway). They were given him as pay from a client instead of cash, for work he did.
I see nothing wrong with having parents who earned a lot of money. But maybe you do, and it is your right.
(Btw, what is "extremely wealthy"? And how exactly do you know that about someone else? As a rule it is something you never know about anyone for sure. His family had a nice house and paid for private schooling. Were there yachts or something? Are there gory details you should share?)
Anyway, it resulted in him having a childhood in a family able to afford what people want. I see nothing wrong with that either.
I confess your reply smacks strongly of envy.
As for Tesla batteries, you should look into their recyclability. I take it you have not.
Let's also hear your ideas for transportation. Aside from fossil fuels and batteries, where can we turn except to the bicycle? We can't propel cars like Fred Flintstone did.

@@didziskrogzems1840 he called a recuse diver who saved like 15 kids a pedo because he refused his help.
@@mathewferstl7042Actually that diver does not look clean. He was often wisting a Thai island famos for child trafficking. If that is not suspicious, don't know what is. Perhaps Musk knew something more, perhaps he was wrong. Either way Looking at Musk's track record it doesn't fit. such serious repeated accusations for some minor deal doesn't make sense. weather he was right or not to me it seems Musk believed what he said about that Diver.
@@didziskrogzems1840 have to look at the reason musk got angry at him in the first place, he acts like a child
Finally a Genius became person of the year instead of uneducated actor . 👍 Kudos to you Mr Musk
