If you are having trouble with the rocket flipping out, try replacing the Basic Tail Fins with the larger AV-T1 Winglets and taking off two of the material bays. Also, keep it locked on prograde pretty much the whole time.

Jesus Christ I had this problem for like a year+ and now I'm finally hearing the answer. Thank you
Came here to the comments to see if anyone else was grinding their teeth at their 4th revisions of this rocket to stop it from flipping. Instead I got a pinned comment by the author on how to fix it. Thank you, genuinely.
With flipping on rocket 5, I just change the pilot and things work out 😂
My Jeb cannot fly for some reason, consistently flips, but Valentina's my champion! Same exact build, both 5 star pilots.
playing classic career mode
Also used the downloadable craft build tested pilot change both with original build using smaller solid boosters and suggested change to larger ones. Great build and fantastic series, cheers!
Hey Mike, I've got a question. At 7:40 you said that the east direction is at 90 degrees on the navball. However, The navball points that the north direction is down. If it was a compass and I would rotate it upside down, so that north direction is up, that direction you said to be east is now west (to the left). Is that a mistake on your part or do I not understand something about how navball works?
Also, Kerbal Space Program is now free on Epic Store and Kerbal Space Program 2 is being released late february this year. You might get some views on this playlist!
@@mateuszm9409 No. East is to the right at 90 degrees on the navball. 270 degrees is west. That may feel backwards, but it's the way compasses ships and planes work.
I've been watching Scott Manley for a few years now but I think I prefer your tutorials. It feels more comfortable and you have a soothing cozy kind of voice when talking.
I concur. I have a love hate relationship with this game - these tutorials are perfectly arranged both in content and recorded time. Cheers.
scott manley is very fast paced
and lets be honest scott manley does not have a soothing and comfortable voice lmao
One nifty thing some people overlook is that once you reach upper atmosphere, you can safely EVA (holding on of course!) and run an EVA report. Once you hit upper atmosphere the resistance isn't enough to blow your Kerbal off. I've done this at very high speeds from 69,999 all the way down to where uppper starts (like 20something?).
I never feel safe doing it if the plasma is visible, but I can confirm you can do this.
Him: Explaining it very good and easy to understand.
My dumbass: numbers numbers numbers
There is truth in numbers, but you are so right! Brain and HP (calculator) are both running hot at times… 😊 ps- there are no dumb asses using this program, we are all rocket scientists! 😁 👍
nice tips. i like how you pin important stuff, saves right clicking a million times.
Thanks. Even more click savings are coming up in future episodes.
I tried to do an EVA while in space and in a stable orbit. Long story short, I now have an unmanned rocket orbiting Kerbal. Jebediah does have an amazing view though.
After watching 7 or 8 of these videos I have to at least comment now. These are so thorough and the way you explain things and sprinkle little things in here or there is really easy to follow. Thanks for getting me back into Kerbal with some better knowledge than before!
I know I'm way late to the game, but I recently found your channel. Thank you for making them easy to understand. I am really enjoying the game now.
Help me bro I’m frustrated I can’t orbit .
thank you so much! i'm just getting back into this game after about 7 years and was really struggling. i remember getting to orbit used to be as simple as flying straight up, turning 90 degrees and just going full throttle
You can still do that. It just takes more fuel. The game's atmospheric model has changed since those days. The lower atmo was so sticky that it was better to go straight up for at least 10 km just to get out of it as quick as you can.
@@MikeAbenwell i'm glad i found your channel. i spent like 4 hours of trial and error before even deciding to look up help, lol. i'm like a third of the way through your beiginner's guides playlist and i'm remembering how much i love this game
@@dntnawall how good did you get now?
Thank you so much, tried to make something orbit with dumb tutorials, didn't work, tried to land on the moon with dumb tutorials, didn't work and I finally understand what I have to do to orbit.
Your videos is one of the best KSP tutorials so far i have around 100 hr of this game but still need to watch this.
This game never stops teaching me stuff.
By far the most easy to understand tutorial for orbiting. I'm dumb and struggled so much before this video, thank you lol
You know what, Mike? Making mistakes is the funniest part of the game for me. I absolutely love doing something wrong, seeing how and why it failed, and then making it better. I usually hate challenging tasks and avoid them, but for some reason, rocket building is a newly discovered passion of mine, even if it's only a game.
I started playing today and was overwhelmed by the game. I’m literally binge watching your videos while taking notes and drawing out ideas for my own designs. Your tips are extremely helpful and I’m looking forward to attempting to get into orbit.
This is the absolute best tutorial/guide I've seen for this game so far! This helped me out so much, Mike thank you!
you've helped me SO MUCH. id probably still be exploding halfway through the atmosphere if it weren't for you. you've managed to not be impossible to understand. thank you!
Excellent video. I used to play a lot years ago but after picking it up recently everything seems to have changed. Very helpful.
These are the best tutorials on youtube hands down. So much easier to understand than the other youtubers. Finally I made this connection from this video: I can literally lock my orientation to a prograde vector and take my hands off the keyboard on ascent. I don’t think I’ve heard a single other youtuber explain that. Now if I just knew how to build a capable ship myself instead of copying youtube builds I’d be in the money
Ive just found your channel. im 5.55 in and this is allready one of the simplest tutoirals ive ever watched for this game. AND I MEAN THAT IN THE BEST WAY. ive played KSP for years but actually rarely got to space, i just cock about in planes xD
Wicked work dude :)
Amazing video. I've played the game for years, and still learned tricks and tips. Thanks Mike!
Great job Mike! one of the best orbit videos found yet, thanks!
Some of the best tutorials Ive yet discovered. Thanks Mike!
Really good series!! I like the format you use. Thanks for these!!!!
Thank you so much for this, I have been so confused on how to get to orbit, I "did" it once, meaning I got the apoapsis thingy to like 500k and the periapsis to like 80k. I now know how to play the game. Thank you so much again. You are entertaining, and you have a calming effect, like I have seen others say, about your voice. Thanks again!
This was really useful, also helped me set up a mun attempt which failed because I flew into it at 5000m/s.
Been playing 3 days and love it!! Not got into orbit yet. Damn hard!! This game looks very hard with all you can do
Very thorough, nice vids bud. Good luck with your channel 😁
You are a legend. Very well spoken and easy to understand. That being said, I still have a hard time building an efficient rocket for doing missions and moon fly by's and whatnot. This game is so hard!
Thanks for the great tutorials. Starting in science mode works much better for me than career.
Dude I’m learning so much. These videos are awesome. Huge thanks!
I like Scott Manley's tutorials and his other space related videos. But yours were different and sounds really good. Your tutorials are very simple to understand that even a guy with no idea about space can understand. Thanks for your good effort. I possible I will recommend your tutorials to my friends who hate information about space.
Thank you so much. Got into orbit with my SSTO with your video.
Got in to orbit for the first time on my first try with this tutorial, thanks!!
i overshot and now my craft with no fuel and a kerman that is pretty far away from his ship is orbiting the sun
Good video! This made my orbital launches way more fuel efficent :D
Awesome video, thank you for this series it`s absolutely fantastic!
I am really enjoying you vid. You make everything easy to understand.
This saved me the struggle of self teaching. Thank you. Also, I love how you make these concepts easy to understand and explain them well.
Thank you! I finally understand the perapsis and what I *should* be doing
Thank you, I had a little stabilization issues for some reason my ship liked to drift a little N/E lol. I made into a decent orbit too. Even with the the markings for Ap Pp and guessing. Barely had enough fuel to retrograde and landed in the far oceans lol. I really like how you showed with out the maneuver nodes.
Thank you SO much for this video. The game really doesn't explain this all that well. REALLY appreciate it
Thank you so much! Thanks to your help, I managed to do it in career mode with equipment barely fit for the task. Two Hammers, one swivel engine and a lot of fuel tanks. Used 17,998/18t permitted and had to leave all the science home but IT WORKED!
Best tutorial I've seen and I've watched several!
thank you, i really struggled with landing since i didn't know how much to slow down.
This tutorial was excellent, I did change the design slightly with bigger fins and more goo containers jammed into the service bay lol. But your explanations and pace are perfect.
Great explanations. You are very easy to listen to. Now comes the fun where I royally F up everything you just taught me lol. Hopefully only once though.
he well I just found you and installed Kerbal.. Thanks for making these tutorials. I've found them invaluable.
Bro....you are worth your weight in rice. That is a good jic. Since watching i have not crashed. Just got the game also but havent reached orbit til i found you. I have seen about 6 diff tubers for this game but you actually caught a sub .
very good tutorial, I like this tutorial that contains details that others do not explain and that are important to understand the game, thank you for this tutorial and the other tutorials...
I've played a lot of KSP but I still watch these videos because even though I already know most of it I always find out a couple things I never knew
Ok, so it did get off the pad and the comment I posted in the last video of this series might have been a wee bit wrong... However this is more down to the fact you put Jeb in the pilot seat, a guy who could fly a Model T Ford into orbit if it had a rocket stuck to it, rather than a well designed ship! 😁
Great video and sticking four Materials Bays to it is a really good idea I may very well steal for my own space programs.
All the best ideas are stollen.
These videos are the most hollistic yet succinct tutorials I've ever seen for KSP. These are great
Thank you! This video made me get it first try! So, again thanks!
Help me bro I can’t orbit I’m getting frustrated
Mike you are the man! I just finished my first moon landing today, then my little brother decided to flip my lander over and blow it up. Thank you so much.
Holy crap, this is the clearest guide i have watched.
Gotta reiterate my comment from a previous video. I use action groups to run my science in pre selected groups. It only takes a second and keeps my attention focused on flying. Keep up the good work, these videos are great. Even for an intermediate player like me.
Action groups will be coming.
That would be really helpful for me on console
you the man!! thank you so much for this.
Omg you made me make my first orbit omg thank you
100% helpful. Love it ❤
wow, that was a lot of science at once. Gotta do that. Thanks
best ever tutorial
thank you so much
Thanks! I came here after your live transmission
Awesome! I hope it helps.
this is the only video i found to take off because i am a beginner and cant get into orbit, thanks for the info, also when you search up:how to get into orbit, you cant find anything
These videos are making the game so much more simple and fun for me. Thanks for making these
19:52 Hi this air is still friction on the capsule, it’s just head on. Friction is friction regardless of what direction the interaction or reaction occurs. Air resistance is a friction force. Even the ISS experiences slight air resistance due to high altitude molecules escaping from Terra. They have to boost once in a while to maintain orbit.
Still, great video.
No, most of the heating is a result of air compression, not friction. You are free to look it up if you like.
@@MikeAben I agree that the air is compressed at the point of contact with the rocket, but I disagree that air compression is the fundamental force resulting in the slowdown of a rocket during orbital entry. Just because the air is compressed in front of the rocket doesn’t mean friction ceases to exist. It very much exists no matter what angle you enter an atmosphere.
Physics is one of my favorite subjects. I’d love to have a scholarly discussion on the fact haha
@@johnokean8216 In the clip, I'm talking about what creates the plasma, which is compression, not what's slowing down the craft which, I suspect, is partially a result of friction, but also, and perhaps more, a result of pressure difference. I've really not studied it in depth.
Really enjoy your videos. Just a tip: add the shortcuts you are using as a tip on the screen. For example Z for throttling all the way up
guides on point!
Excellent!
Super Video !!!!!!
being stupid and jumping right into RP1 but this is still helping me a lot, I played kerbal vanilla a long time ago but trying to regather all that knowledge slowly
It's been one day and I am able to send a satellite and a capsule with return safely after spend few times in orbit.. it felt great..
hi mike can you tell me why it keeps slidein to the north and it gets mesed up an it spins im usein the winglets but the boosters keep wobaling
Sliding is probably because of symmetry and check that your booster are properly attached to the decoupler .
Thank you I was wondering why my rocket kept spinning then you pointed out the prograde and those types of stuff
Thanks so much I got into orbit
Congrats.
11:50 "Throttle up as the time [to apoapsis] goes down; but if the time stops going down, throttle down."
That's an elegant rule of thumb.
thanks! now i wont have to deal with extremely eccentric orbits and the lack of being able to plot routes.
oh cool now i know how to use the vector locks, when i dont have any besides stability assist unlocked
You ought to post these videos on the KSP forums. I just came across a new post a few days ago of a new player looking for tips.
Feel free to share.
I succesfully got into orbit, but my little kerbal failed to reenter the ship after a spacewalk, so now I got Jeb in orbit
thanks!
I didn't know you could ditch the science storage and still get the science. It doesn't really make sense but good for us.
Make sure to set SCE to AUX, and you are good to go.
houston,we dont have any fuckin duct tape, over
ThankYou
Question: I'm tryna ferry 4 tourists into orbit and back but the problem is the start stage is unstable. I have 6 thumper boosters and 6 more hammers boosters to get 3500 speed. In most cases the rocket just doesn't go straight up. The top wobbles around and sad tries to correct it. Without sas I can't control the rocket well enough and it flips
dint realise you could lock the rocket to prograde and let it go to the orbit thanks
i quit this game because i found it too hard and i couldnt find any videos to help me out that explained well for me but yours did. Thank you so much im going to reinstall this game
I'm currently in the midst of a more update series if you want to check that out.
@@MikeAben I will be sure to thank you
Pro tip, its a lot easier to just go up and hang right in space if you’ve got the delta v to do so
holy molly after like 100 trys 50 trys to land from orbit i finally landed the whole ship intact
Thanks a lot now i can make satellites in orbit now :D
11:23 how do you prevent the time to apoapsis from reaching zero. I've been fiddling around with this portion of my ascents and can't seem to figure out how to reduce the TTA. At full throttle it still counts down pretty quickly.
It would be nice to be in a circular orbit at the end of that final horizontal burn, but the way its been going for me is by the time my Periapsis is ~80km my Ap. is ~120
Either apply more thrust, pitch up, or start the burn earlier. If you start the burn 30 seconds before apoapsis while pointed at the horizon, you should find you will be reducing or cutting thrust to keep your apoapsis time from increasing.
Alternatively, you can place a maneuver node at apoapsis and use it to circularize.
Hey Mike, thanks so much for these tutorials so far! I have a problem (no doubt my fault) but when I start turning east and lock prograde at 5°~ my rocket starts to drift south a fair bit. If I regain manual control, after a few seconds I lose it. if I don't do that I end up so far south my orbit gets messed up. Please help, this is the same rocket that you are using with as close to the same settings I could get.
I've added a link to my craft file in the description. You can download it, fly it, and directly compare it to yours. You are not the first to report some challenges. A little bit of drifting north or south is pretty normal, but it sounds like your experiencing more than just a bit of drift.
Check the tail fins. They're small an easy to miss. Make sure all four of them are there and as low as possible. Also, make sure the SRBs aren't too low. Their engine bells should be just below the engine bell of the central core, but only just.
Another thing to try is too swap the small tail fins for some bigger ones.
@@MikeAben The only way I got this was to keep manual control the entire time and micromanage the rocket, in which I had no ability to do any science.
I am in stable 82k ap 75k pe orbit, I tried 5 or 6 times and this is the one way that worked
Thank you so much for your tutorials - have helped enormously! I'm being a bit thrown at the moment - I have the ship facing the horizon but when I use the "throttle up if your time to apoapsis is decreasing" manoeuvre I end up speeding past my apoapsis. Have I missed an obvious step?
Sounds like your ascent was much steeper than mine, which is fine but it means you need to not let yourself get that close to apoapsis and/or pitch up a bit. You can quicksave as soon as you are in space so you can retry until you get a feel for the maneuver.
@@MikeAben Thank you for taking the time to reply - very much appreciated! I managed to get successfully to orbit yesterday by pitching over earlier - essentially by over-riding the prograde marker. It's super helpful that you encourage people to try things out and see what happens - helps encourage the mindset of understanding WHY the manouvere works, rather than just how to do it. Thank you!
When you activate the SAS, you get all those options to click on left of your NAV Ball, why do i not get those when activating the SAS? I play career mode, do i have to upgrade a building? Same goes with this maneuver-calculator, i don't have it, do i also need a better building for this?
You don't get the maneuver calculator until you've upgraded mission control and the tracking station. The extra options with SAS depends upon the level of your pilot and probe body.
First of all, these videos are great! You've helped me so much with these tutorials, thanks! But I do have some questions, one being that when I turn on SAS, there aren't any options aside from that green dot on the left of the nav ball. I'm not sure how to fix this. I'd really appreciate if I could get an explanation for this.
You must be playing career mode. You need to level up a pilot or have a higher tier probe body.
@@MikeAben Thanks! I might switch to that because I am new to the game and apparently science mode is easier
This has probably been thought of before
A wheel very big, orbiting earth, also turning, spinning at almost or orbit velocity, reaching into the van Allen belt, lift into orbit by magnetic or static electricity?
im trying over and over again. but i could only get to orbit once with this rocket. the thing completely goes unstable after the first stage. i either go too steep upwards or start violently spinning from turning too much. im doing exactly what was shown on the launch with the same rocket file
PLEASE can you help, I can't move down the ship to collect the science. I did an EVA but drifted off and only just re-boarded in time.
Thanks for the videos, all these years later they're still appreciated! :) Subbed.
Did you turn on RCS after you EVAed the Kerbal. That's what turns on the EVA pack and allows you to maneuver.
@@MikeAben Yep that was it, thank you so much for your help!!
Question for you, when I'm burning to the apoapsis, and it goes negative (jumps to 12 minutes or so) what action should I take? I understand I probably should have started my burn earlier, but unlike your ship my rocket doesn't appear to increase the time to apoapsis as much when I'm pointed at the horizon, any tips?
Pitch up.
hi your videos are great but when i start launchig my rocket's srbs start wobbling due to which my rocket also wobbles and i cant orient it properly i just want to know what changes you have done to the rocket after testing the vessel plssssss
Here's the link to where I build this rocket.
ua-cam.com/video/fbNAjmooad0/v-deo.html
There is also a link to my craft file if you want to download it and play with it yourself.
Here are a few things to look for.
1. Tweak down the thrusts on those SRBs. I describe this in detail in the video linked above.
2. After attaching the SRBs to the decouplers, use the move tool to slide them down a bit.
3. Try to minimize the number of adjustments you're doing during flight. During much of this launch I'm not doing anything and when I do make adjustments, it's mostly just taps on the WASD keys.
Good luck. I hope this helps.
I am always coming above atmosphere with a high apoapsis and saldy a VERY big negative periapsis, although i am trying to do the gravity roll while ascending. Then i need to waste a huge amount of my fuel to just get into an orbit. What is my crucial mistake? :-( Nonetheless thanks a lot for your tutorials, they are a must for KSP rookies.
