Hey, I've been trying for a while now, I've tried putting bigger fins but, my rocket keeps tipping over even if I dont touch it, any clue as to what I'm doing wrong
@@Blackhole-go3sx If you haven't already done so, try going straight up and then locking onto prograde a few seconds after launch. If it still flips out, it is most likely the CoL getting ahead of the CoM. Check their positions in the VAB. Also, check your fuel flow priority by right-clicking on the tanks. If you are draining upper tanks first, that could easily be a problem as it will move the CoM down. If you're still having trouble, post a VAB screenshot in the help section of the discord. Make sure the CoM and CoL are on. It's a much easier place to have a discussion.
@@MikeAben Thanks alot, I'll be sure to do it
@Kolos Barlik I'm assuming you mean the icons to the left of the navball for locking to specific orientations: prograde, retrograde, etc. If you are playing career mode the unlock as your pilots advance in level or as you unlock better probe bodies on the tech tree.
@@MikeAben I have a question, why is my UI bigger than it is in your game? sometimes I can’t pin some science on my screen as it’ll take up too much space
I've played KSP for thousands of hours, I taught myself how to get into orbit, I've built everything from refuelling infrastructure to spaceplanes, I've got a fleet of ships on the way to Jool... and I still learned something from this. :) I'll be recommending these tutorials to the people who say, "I've played for 15 years and still can't get into orbit" or "to the Mun" etc.
I recently picked up KSP and I love science and aeronautics, but I cannot do any kind of advanced math, even at 32-yo. I somehow learned everything on my own, knew enough about aerodynamics and weights, and ended up in orbit on my fifth flight, after tweaking the rocket. I then ended up somehow getting into an almost perfect Mun orbit without even knowing about the maneuver nodes. These videos are great for ANYONE!! I also learned some new stuff, and do with every video I watch. I wish I could see everything you have going on!
finally...a tutorial that explains everythings. You're a renaissance man, Mike Aben
True
I know this is an old series, but just now stumbled across it, thanks for keeping it up. I had given up on KSP because I just could not get into orbit. always ran out of fuel. I tried the game's tutorial several times but could not figure out what I was missing. I got KSP2 and the tutorial there was simpler to follow, I figured out what I was doing wrong. As I said I stumbled across this playlist list while looking for something for KSP2, thanks to you KSP1 has new life.
If you check out my channel, you'll see I'm doing specific KSP2 tutorials as well.
4 years late or not, I appreciate you putting each point into, for lack of a better term, "simple stupid" terms so I could understand them without having to attend a physics class. Here's to getting to space.
I will have to say this is one of the best tutorials out there for KSP. I have watched a few, and have quite a few hours of KSP under my my belt as well. That being said though, I am still learning a few new tips and tricks from this series. Keep up the great work!! I kind of wish this tutorial had been around when I started playing.
Just wanted to say how good your tutorials are. I only brought the game last week but I'm completely hooked. Well done and keep it up.
Love your tutorials ! Simple and easy to understand. This game fills my passion for space and you make me understand all those rocket and physic concepts. I'm a software engineer, I'm no rocket engineer ! Great work !
Thanks. That means a lot. Let me know if there things you're confused by. It helps shape future eps.
Man 40 hours in this game and I never knew you could click on the stage to get detailed stats like that. I’ve been out here trying to convert my weight into kN myself this whole time. Thanks for the videos!
Didn't think I'd get anything out of this but that girder inside a service bay is a great idea!
These videos are way more helpful than the actual tutorials in game, thank you so much
This man will make me a pro
First off thank you for the tutorial, i thoughtfully enjoyed learning how to build rockets, second this game just be right up your alley as you seem to understand the thrust ratio number requirements necessary for a successful orbital spin. I can only hope that one day grasp things as you have
Such an underrated channel, you're awesome dude !
Just tested out the like button and I think I’ll keep it that way
I am new to ksp and your videos really helped me thank you and good job.
I'm just getting back into KSP since Asteroid Redirect went live and I lost the ability to play due to PC restraints lol Then Scott Manly was the go to for tutorials but you sir, you have certainly brought back my love for the game. (I had actually forgotten about the planetary samples lol) So time to go grab some science! Looking forward to binge watching them all. Thank you for the Very informative tutorials 👍👍
Thank you for the video, i was following a wiki tutorial but never completed it, your video is so much better than that wiki page, without you i would just quit playing!
After this series, I guess I will be ready to apply for NASA. Thank you 💝😊
For biomes, each building in the space center counts as a biome too. For easy science, build a rover with experiment modules and go drive around.
For reference, the ones I have tested so far are: Runway, Launchpad, Crawlerway, SPH, VAB, Tracking Center, and Research Center
LOL
Didn't he mention that in the first episode? This dude knows EVERYTHING.
love your vids man you're helping me a lot to get into this game.
PRO TIP: Some rocket engines might have a TWR Less than 1 when you're fully done with a rocket, remove parts that are attached to a decoupler so you can have a more clear and correct TWR.
Hey Mr. Aben, I don't know if you still read comments on here, but I want to thank you for making these videos. I've only had KSP for a few months now, and I've been having a lot of fun! For like 90% of that time, though, I could never figure out anything past getting into low orbit around Kerbin, and even that was a Herculesn effort! For the last few weeks, though, I've been watching your tutorial videos like a priest reads the Bible, and you've helped me get way better! It's been really helpful having someone who knows how to do all the things I need help with, and explains it all in a way that I can understand. I've gotten so much better over the course of these last few weeks, and I only have you to thank. I've been having so much fun in KSP now that I know what I'm doing! I'm now planning my first manned mission to Minmus in a Career Mode run with your video's help, wish me luck!
Good luck. I'm glad the videos are helping.
@@MikeAben One more thing: WHY DO YOU ONLY HAVE 37K SUBS??? YOU DESERVE SO MUCH MORE!
Hey dude. Your videos are great. have learned a lot until now. Have watched a lot of tutorials, your videos are the best ones :). hope you keep going these tutorials, it is very useful. thanks a lot :)
There will be more of these. Let me know if there is a topic you would like to see covered.
@@MikeAbenI know this is very VERY late, but could you do an episode on orbital surveys and scanning ores and such, this is something I've always wanted to try and never understood

It's a two parter. The second part gets into harvesting.
For years I've just been shooting them straight up, rotating 90 degrees and firing away... so wasteful. Thank you!
You are a gentleman, sir.
Thank you so much I haven’t tested it yet but I hope it works
Good luck. If it doesn't, I did make a newer video for 1.12 with, what I think, is a better rocket.

This vid is great!
Got a couple hundred hours and still learnt a couple things from this
The fame keeps teaching me stuff too.
I followed this guide and it was very good. I only have one issue tho. Instead of orbiting kerbin I now orbit the sun and have no way to get back home. Poor Jeb
i love this man he is amazing
I've been playing KSP for a couple of years but I mostly learned by trial and error so I missed out on a lot of the tips and tricks youre showing
I tried a mat lowne tutorial...
It never work
But yours did!!!
lol, I strapped my 2 mystery goos to the nose cone, seemed to work ok
Wahooooo stupendous!
Nice work.
Mike Aben…I love your shit! 👍🏻👌🏻
How is it that I do this exact rocket (pixel perfect down to the numbers) and it starts to spin :( I have no full SAS ofc just stability. Bug?
Loving the tutorials. i am running 1.12.5 on PC and you can not put the batteries in to the storage yet as they are in tier 3 at 45 science. It might be due to the previous video and that you can not get ground samples unless you upgrade R & D first, which i didn't know about till now.. :(
@mike aben your ability in ksp and general approach to videos is another level. Almost seems effortless, in a good way. edited with tips and the classic tell me, tell me and tell me again what I just learnt. Probably the best tutorials I've watched online. Ps. I still think console version looks harder to use. It's really clunky for obvious reason... the game is optimised for use on PC's.
This guy can turn you from noob to pro at ksp
And thanks this is very helpful
Why are you still getting very few views? your tutorials are amazing.
The algorithm remains a mystery to me.
Excellent birthday present! Thank you for the entertainment.
Happy birthday, Dan! 🥳🥳🥳
Hello there Mike! Great tutorial: I just have a question about this. I have completed the construction of the rocket and I am still at 2940 m/s of delta V. I am in the vacuum and I have my staging correct. What could be the issue? I’ve reloaded the game and that hasn’t worked.
Edit: Never mind! Problem has been fixed. Didn’t have couplers on a set of the boosters.
That thing'll never get off the pad! 💥😂
Oh, are you going to be disappointed. 😋
Thanks for the tutorial! Im still questioning how we will get the science back without it getting destroyed though.
The science can be removed and stored in the capsule.
@@MikeAben alright ty
Hey Great videos thanks for creating these they are a big help but i was wondering how much of a pain is it to get the subscribed button moved to the top right or somewhere else? it keeps getting in the way of seeing the total delta V and last part of staging
Thanks. The button is put in by UA-cam. I think I only have control of what the icon is. Let me look into it.
I wish i knew you could thrust limit the SRBs earlier
Somehow the couplers never detach the stage when i expect them to do. Is that a bug or just me stupid again?
1000 thumbs up on this video wow!!!!
I always thought the monopropellant let you steer the command pod. Didnt realise it had a reaction wheel in. whats the monopropellant for?
The monopropellant is to power maneuvering thruster blocks, which are definitely helpful, but you don't unlock them until later.
Ty I just got this game
Good luck. I hope you have half the fun I have with it.
@@MikeAben lol idk what to say I didn’t think you would reply
I know this is an older game and a fairly old video but you always talk about getting a ton of science. I am not sure if you know, but each building is its own biome. You need to have basic flight unlocked to get the very minimum kind of wheel for this to work but you make a small jet with no wings and drive around to each building and do your science. 😛
What platforms can you get this game?
These tutorials are excellent. I’ve done well up until this point. But I’m doing something wrong with the SRBs. The craft destabilizes as soon as start to turn east. I’ve moved the SRBs up and down and I can’t figure out what’s going on.
If the rocket is flipping around it is most likely because the centre of lift is too far forward. The problem is likely not your rocket, but the tail fins. Are all four of them there and are they as low as they can be on the rocket. I didn't talk about centre of lift in this video (I will in a future rocket tutorial), but I did talk about in regards to planes here.
ua-cam.com/video/416zilwOwAQ/v-deo.html
With rockets, make sure the centre of lift is well behind the centre of mass.
Another thing to try is too swap the small tail fins for some bigger ones.
Mike Aben I read up on that and no matter what I did I couldnt get my rocket balanced. Then I saw your craft file. And I tried with that. I can’t even get that to fly straight. I have SAS on when I start my maneuver to pitch East I can’t stay on the 90°.
I'm fairly new to the game but I experienced the same thing last night. I have a rocket (Icarus 3) that fly's beautifully for an early game rocket. Then I changed only the astronaut capsule for a sputnik so I could be more adventurous with risking Kerbal lives (KLM). With the sputnik the rocket spins round and round quickly going nowhere. I change the top back and hey presto I'm back in orbit. Do you have a good pilot and the SAS on?
@@MikeAben hey man just like some of these other people I can't get this thing to fly. I've rebuilt it and rebuilt it, each time carefully following your steps. Great video btw. However it just doesn't work for what's reason!
i accidently clicked on new thingy so the rocket got deleted and i didnt save and it got lost i had to rebuiled it
So I've found a weird bug. If you attach something to vertical decouplers and press x (the symmetry button) twice, the other part phases through the decoupler and is inside the vessel. Hopefully Squad fixes this.
Weird symmetry issues like that have been around for a while.
how do u start the thrusters?
Spacebar. You can find all the key bindings in the KSPedia at the top right when you are at the space center view.
I literally unlocked everything in the tech tree and I still build rockets that use Mk1 pods.
The bottom thruster explodes after stage 2 I think the other booster is hitting it when I decouple it but IDK how to fix it also the navball kinda goes off the north-south 90 degree line (or the prime meridian) I don't think it's much of a problem but I would still like it to be perfect
Slide the boosters further down but leave the decoupler high up. As for the second problem. This is a tough rocket to streer when the SRBs are going. Better parts later will make this easier.
@@MikeAben Thanks!
@@MikeAben also, which booster do you recommend for making it easier to control?
@@xboydubose7254 Both engine gimballing and aerodynamic control surfaces will help. The SRBs don't have gimballing and I've not unlocked control fins yet which is what makes this rocket harder.
When I make a liquid fuel rocket it does not launch
For any new KSP players here, this will be what was said in the summary (just to look back at without needing to watch the whole video again)
1. Plan out your science
2. Remember that 3600 m/s of (vacuum) Delta V is what you need to achieve a low Kerbin orbit (try to go a little higher)
3. Build multi-stage rockets, make sure to adjust staging and stuff like TWR (thrust to weight ratios)
4. Use your rotation and move tools!
Another tip is that you should always make sure to check your Delta V of both sea level and vacuum.
i was realy waiting for that "its not rocket science" comment while fidling with the TWR's
I am very confused. I've been following along exactly but for some reason I'm still below 4,000 m/s for delta v after rearranging the stages. I'm stuck at 3288 m/s.
Edit: nvm I had the atmosphere set at sea level instead of vacuum. XD
Easy mistake.
@mike Aben when I try to launch the rocket, it says too many parts! Can I please get some help?
You have to upgrade the VAB.
@@MikeAben oh someone said I had to upgrade my launchpad so I spent all my money on that 😞
Launchpad is for weight and size
I don’t find it Hard. I just find it very Attentive needing. It is one of those games you NEED to pay attention to..
I know this vid is kinda old but I'm having a problem. I built the same rocket as you and I've changed to the AV-T1 but my rocket won't stop rotating. Any tip?
If by rotating you mean rolling around the central axis, then likely there's an asymmetry somewhere, either in the radial boosters or tail fins. If they're rotated slightly, that will cause a roll. Try removing them (and the radial decouplers) Nd putting on new ones. A little bit if roll is normal, but spinning like a top isn't.
If by rotating you mean it wants to spin around backwards, then make sure you aren't moving to far from the prograde vector on the navball. Another thing to try is turning down the fuel flow priority on the lower tanks in the VAB. This keeps the center of mass forward which improves stability.
You can also try downloading the craft file in the description. If it flies better for you, than you know it's something in your build.
@@MikeAben yeah I messed up. It was my build. Thanks bro
@@ericp.5533 You bet. We've all been there.
Should I use the administration building? It looks kinda dumb
I've rarely used it.
Why would you need to thrust limit a throttleable engine?
Because it gives you one less thing to think about on flight. It also increases throttle sensitivity.
Im a bit late to this vid. but I built the rocket. And for some reason as soon as I seperate and begin stage 2 my rocket spins out of control and loses all its speed
Oh and also, the liquid engine just blows up as soon as I start stage 2 lmao
@@operatorfox2 I can't speak to the second problem, but the first sounds like your centre of lift is in front of your centre of mass. I talk about it here.
ua-cam.com/video/X2CeSk6ATjo/v-deo.html
@@operatorfox2 Adjust the solid fuel boosters higher up without changing the decoupler the booster is smacking into the rocket
You mean to tell me that my ships have been flipping end over end because i stuck a reaction wheel on the nose of my spacecraft? I didn't realize it mattered where you put it in KSP.
Actually, I've since learned I was wrong, not in the physics of it, but in the fact the game doesn't model it.
@@MikeAben Guess that means my rocket was just too tall or top-heavy when leaving atmosphere. I had been wondering is reactipn wheel placement was taken into account in KSP. Maybe we'll get more accurate simulation in KSP 2? Regardless I'm glad I found these videos. Thanks to you I was able to send Jeb to rescue Bob from Munar orbit when he ran out of Δv.
...and then send Valentina up when Jeb got stuck in Kerbin orbit on the way back.
I am doing some thing wrong each time I fire the rockets they start to wiggle and it explodes. lol I am re watching
Yup, that's part of the fun. Notice mine wiggles a bit on th pad too. Make sure to wait for it to settle out. If you're using the same design as I am, moving down the four SRBs a little further may help. I believe mine is sitting on the swivel engine bell when on the pad, but the four SRBs would likely be a more stable platform. Also, if you've unlocked struts and launch clamps yet, use them. They'll be featured in my next building video.
@@MikeAben I got it. My SRB's weren't on the couples I think or something cause I would wait till it stopped then launched it still hand problems even with SAS on it crashed and burned I just redid the SRB's couples I'm not sure if its bug or what but it kept trying to put four couples on instead of the two I wanted and it would change by its self
it worked after I redid them so it had to be my placement of them or something.
Last time LOL i forgot I was still had my thrust on and I took Jeb out for a EVA bye bye Jeb lol
I’ve built a similar rocket, but I’m not getting any science from my experiments because they’re getting destroyed upon reentering the atmosphere. Are you transmitting your data or am I missing something? Thanks :)
Collect the science with your kerbal and store it in the capsule.
@@MikeAben I tried that too, once I’ve collected the data I cannot get into the command pod. I can’t remember exactly what it says, but it won’t let me enter with the data and I have to discard it.
@@cianrichards7775 The only time it does that is if you have duplicates of the same experiment in the same situation. For example, if you store an EVA report in near space above the water and then try to store another EVA report in near space above the water, it will tell you second can't be stored and you have to dump it (but the first is still there). However, if you then grab say an EVA report in near space above the grasslands, you will be able to store that. There is no limit to how much you can store as long as each stored experiment is different.
A go over this in detail in the first video in this series.
