I sold yrs ago. But just started again + got a buyer today. I don’t have a scale + I’m in an ice storm so I called eBay + told them I guessed the oz. They said I’ll be penalized if I print the label b4 checking the oz at the P.O. first. I’ll be glad when I’m not rusty ☺️

Poshmark is probably the easiest. But, for items under 1 pound, it's also the most expensive.
Thank you for this information. Will I need to know the dimensions of the box and full weight prior to listing shipping cost on eBay. I think this is where new sellers get tripped up at on eBay. Thanks for all the great content.
If you are using calculated shipping, then you do. With flat rate packaging, you wouldn't have to.

The cool thing about Pirate Ship and using poly mailers is that not only do you only need the mailer length and width but also, quite often, you'll get the advantage of the discounted USPS Cubic Rates which Ebay does not offer sellers. For packages that qualify by size and weight this can add up to a lot of savings.
I've never seen much savings from Pirate Ship. I have an account. And I usually check if the package I'm shipping seems expensive. I don't know if it's my location (central Texas) or the items I ship. It's just never seemed like a good value. But, admittedly, my experience has been limited. I probably haven't checked 50 packages in total.
@@TheChaChingKingpirate does a cubic thing bag on a box which is dirt cheap..the trick is it cant look like a box in there like you shouldnt see hard corners. Also pirate tracking numbers just last forever which is handy if you get some dippy chargeback months later. Normal USPS track number only last a short time then it's deleted.

I didn’t think the cost of pirate ship was any different from eBay.
Does the customer automatically get the tracking number also? Are you still covered under eBay if it shows you shipped the item and the buyer says it didn’t arrive?

@@dianem6951Pirate Ship integrates seamlessly with Ebay. It imports your ship to information from each sale and exports the tracking number to Ebay when you purchase shipping labels on Pirate Ship. Ebay treats tracking numbers the same no matter where you purchase shipping.

I buy shipping supplies. I don't have the time or patience to use a tone of recycled stuff. And keeping a bunch of used materials takes up a TON of room.
Scot, I imagine you have seen on Pirate Ship that for poly mailers they ask only for poly mailer length and width. The volume or capacity for a non rigid mailer is fixed regardless of what is put inside as long as the mailer is not stretched in the process. The actual potential mailer volume determines the postage fee.
I don't use pirate ship often at all. So, I haven't seen that. At the post office I used before coming to Penelope, they told me that the package should fit inside the dimensions I've used. So, that's how I do it. I always err on the side of safety. In my head, a dangerous place to be for sure, the flat dimensions of a poly mailer wouldn't do the post office any good.
I need to ask the post office. It would sure be easier without using a thickness. I hope I've been doing it wrong.
Scot, I check every single package Ebay vs Pirate Ship and 75-85% of the time Pirate Ship is cheaper. I also prefer their rates for additional insurance, much lower than Ebay charges per $100 increment. Especially important for my high ticket items and much better. Pirate Ship paid 100% on a lost $3800 item (jewelry) shipped USPS PRIORITY with adult signature. Usps "lost" it.
Interesting. I've only had one that I checked that was actually cheaper. Makes me wonder if I'm doing it wrong. I've emailed the post office to ask about how to enter the poly mailers. I'll try to come back with their answer...if they answer.

I've never used Mercari. So, I don't have any experience with it.
The first time I shipped through poshmark I couldn't get the label to come up until I hit verify your address first. It drove me nuts, since I had done that hours before. However, with your very first label you will need to do it again. thanks for the video

I have the Rollo wireless label printer and I absolutely love it. LOVE IT. It not only makes my business look professional, it saves us a ton of time. I'll post my affiliate link here for you. You are using a Regional Rate box,
post office has discontinued that service.
The box can still be used like any priority mail free box, as long as you pay usps priority postage rate to ship it. On Poshmark all packages ship usps priority mail. Some people cross out the Regional Rate words printed on the box. Not required though.
You are correct. The post office wants the old supply used. You can use them like you would any other Priority box. They just don't ship at the Regional flat rate anymore. Now it's weight and dimensions.

So, in Canada, my experience so far, with our crazy way of shipping, is...I can put a top in a poly mailer or in a box and it comes out to the same cost. At least in my location it is like that. I just feel like a box will protect the clothing better so I use them. What do you think of that. Any other Canadians have the same or different experience. I don't have access to any discount shipping companies either so it is just Canada Post for me. Shippo does nothing for me either.
It goes by weight here, so a box could run up your cost. But, if the buttons are fragile, I would usually ship it in a box.
Hello Scot, thank you for this video. My question to you is, will shipping on any of the other shipments videos you just made be charged apart from we the new sellers on eBay? Or can I choose to ship from those others by skipping eBay shipment please
No, you couldn't use Poshmark or Etsy to ship. You could probably use PayPal to ship and then go back and enter the tracking information into eBay. But, even though I could easily ship that way, it's just an added step with no real benefit. You would use each of these for items that sell on each platform. You could use PayPal for shipping things you sold independently or on platforms like Etsy.
Why do you use all that paper ? It weighs so much and the tree people are whining too ..i use bubnles i get them free all day long from local biz.
If I ever find free packing peanuts, I'd switch in a heartbeat.
Fairly new seller. Don't you have to do all the measuring and weighing in the listing? I seem to do it backwards. I start listing then pack, weight and measure so I know what to put in the listing to start with. So do you have several shipping policies? I think I have too many to choose from
On most of the things we sell, I've sold so many before that I have a pretty good idea. Until you know, you really need to measure and weigh first. It'll make your listing more accurate. I do have several policies. But, less than 10 overall. I have 30 or 40...no joke. Having too many is just about like having none for me. So, I redid them to better represent the things we sell.
Hi, Scot! Thanks for all of your great videos. I have just begun selling on eBay as of Dec. 2023 and have sold five items so far. I have learned so much from you! I want to sell some items within a particular Facebook group that requires use of PayPal (which I have). I am a little confused about how to print labels using PayPal/ShipStation. In your video, were you in the PayPal account or a ShipStation account when you were showing that? I haven't signed up for ShipStation yet. Do I need to do that and then somehow link it to my PayPal? I am assuming there is a fee for ShipStation as well(?) Sorry for all the questions. I am trying to learn as fast as I can. I am a full-time teacher, so I am trying to do this as a side hustle and build it up before retiring from teaching. Thanks again!!

I don't think there's a separate fee. But, if I'm honest, I haven't paid super close attention.
On eBay, how do you ship cubic rate for heavy but smaller packages.
EBay doesn't have a separate cubic rate that I'm aware of. If you have something that needs that, Pirate Ship does that.
Do you have to print the label from the platform? Years ago when I sold on eBay I just took the package to the post office and used their label.
You can get a QR code and the post office will print it for you. It's much cheaper to buy your labels through ebay because you are getting the commercial rate.
Hi there, have a question. On these 3 sales minus Poshmark, did you pay for the shipping or did the buyer?
On eBay I charged the buyer. On Etsy I had free shipping. And the one I had a friend buy, I paid the shipping. Does that answer the question? I typically don't charge for shipping on Etsy because my fees are less than eBay. But, it's not a hard and fast rule.
Do you ship on Mercari? I find their pricing much higher than other platforms. I’ve been using pirate ship to ship anything over 1 lb and building the price into the sales price. Not sure if that is the best way to do it or not. What are your thoughts?
I haven't ever bought or sold on Mercari. So, I don't really have an informed opinion.
Scott, I think I have the shipping figured out, however I'm having trouble getting ebay to recognize my new thermal printer. I can print a test page from my laptop but when I go to print label it won't show the thermal printer. I'll keep trying. Thanks, aka I'm not Bill Gates.
:-) I'm not ever going to be Bill Gates. Printers can be a chore to get connected. Reach out to the printer manufacturer if possible. Also, I consider The College Picker an absolute printer guru. Check out his channel. @thecollegepicker
Scot, I just started selling on Ebay. I just got a thermal printer when I go to print a label they are coming out sideways and i can't seem to get them to print 4x6. Any suggestions?. Thanks for all your great videos..
You are printing in landscape mode and you need to change it to portrait. You have to change the setting BEFORE you purchase the label. When you are getting ready to buy the label, on the right side of the screen it should show "Print Format." I have mine set to PDF File and 4X6. If yours is already set to that, go to "Devices and Printers" in Windows. It should be one of your options in the start menu. Open Devices and Printers. Then, open the printer you're trying to use. I have mine set to "North American 4X6"

I wanna list my first item on Ebay but not wanting to pull the trigger yet due to if it sells I dont have a printer for the shipping labels what do you think I should do first
You can always buy the label and send a QR code to your phone. The post office will print the label for you.

Scott, I messed up. I’m just starting selling on eBay and I listed a lot of watches that I value at $400.00. I accidentally listed the lot as auction but I meant to sell buy it now. I know this will make me lose a lot of money. Do I have any recourse?
Do you have any bids yet? If not, cancel the auction. It's not a big deal if there aren't any bids on it. It's not impossible to cancel an auction with bids on it, but eBay frowns on it. I'm not sure if there are consequences with a new account. It's not easy to test...obviously.

Scot, when I ship items in poly mailers I only enter the flat dimensions of the mailer cavity (length and width without the fold-over flap). I saw you entered 2 inches height for the shirt on your Etsy tutorial. Why?
I try to get my dimensions as close to the actual size I'm shipping. Think about it like this. When I ship in a box, I put the assembled size of the box, not the size of it lying flat. So, I use the size of the poly mailer as it ships.
@@TheChaChingKing I think I have been shipping my items all wrong. I've been using the padded priority flat envelopes (if it fits it ships) for like 9 bucks when I probably could have and should have used just a regular poly mailer as the items were not quite 1 pound.
@@user-qr2zt3ur8t Maybe. But, you also had a free envelope and the customer probably got their item a little faster. So, it's not like you've made some massive mistake. The real downside is that the post office made a little extra when it could have either been saved by the customer or gone to you. But, it's not that big of a deal. Try sending out some of them Ground Advantage in some poly mailers and see if that works for you.

I noticed when you hit print shipping label on your ebay platform you had your logo on it how did you get that
It's only done on the video. I'm just covering up the buyer's address. It's not really on the label.
