Possible scenarios for defense for Denver and Minnesota teams with large point guards:
draft Dillingham and draft two defensive perimeter wings that are at least 6'5.
Blake Wesley is still lightweight and he's 6'3. Boys gotta at least to 200 pounds. That 165-185 lbs not gonna work.
Spurs need a very good small forward defender.. period.
Wemby and Sochan are the only ones that play defense consistently. Spur are not gonna be good ever with no perimeter defense. Dillingham has to bring top notch scoring and passing to survive.
Vassell's defense isn't great either so that SG spot is still suspect. we need defense on 3-4 positions at least.
You're crazy if you think the Spurs will return to championship form without defense.

They aren't getting more low defense guys. They have plenty of those. They are getting Risacher and Salaun or maybe a Ron Holland. Guys who could be top defenders

@@recognizelife8397 Not really. Denver has two guys who create and they do great offensively. You just need the other guys to know their role (get an MPJ type in the draft, Sochan becomes Aaron Gordon). With Devin and Wemby they can take care of a lot of the offense and you have Keldon off the bench and an offensive style where everyone can score Tre, Malakai, Mamu, Champagnie. Depth is more important that getting a ton of scorers unless they can defend too

@@blablablaa14the entire reason why got knocked out in this game 7 is BECAUSE they only have two dudes on that team who can create their own shot under pressure. Having more than two people who can get their own without assistance isn’t an absolute must but it would help so much in the long run to stop them from getting game planned and minimizing wembys impact.

I would be skeptical if we draft him. Definitely don't see him as a 4th overall. Id take castle or topic at 4, (or Risacher if hes available). But i am no scout haha

I'm leaning into a Castle(4)/Dillingham(8) draft. Not sure if it would fall out that way, but I feel that would make us a better team.
I think if you take Dillingham you have to consider the possibility that he might be relegated to a 2nd unit guy. But as a bench player he has a good chance of murdering some 2nd unit defenses.

@@colin1818 If the Spurs drafted Dilly, he'd be the most talented PG on the team day 1. Athletes with big bodies like Castle are easier to find and replace than a three level scorer and play maker. It's telling that the name "Castle" mostly gets brought up in draft discussion when the conversation is about Dillingham.

    • @colin1818
      @colin1818 Місяць тому +2

@@dillamadukes21 - If the Spurs drafted Dilly he'd also immediately become the worst defender on the team. And that might not ever change. There were stretches in college where Dilly was unplayable due to his bad defense. There is definitely a non-zero chance that only gets worse in the NBA.
On the flip side, Castle would likely be the 2nd best defender essentially from day 1 and fill an equally needed gap to Dilly's shooting.
The more I look at this and consider it I think Castle is my clear-cut target at 4. Seeing other mocks saying the same thing. You're hoping that he can grow and become your PG of the future. But at his floor he can play the 2 and be the perimeter stopper you've desperately needed.
At 8 I would strongly consider Dillingham if he's there. But I'm thinking more of an upside target like Cody Williams or even Salaun might be the better balance with the Castle pick. If all 3 are there then I'd just defer to the Spurs scouts and who they think the best fit/realistic upside target is.
The one thing that could mess this all up is if Risacher falls to 4. I have to assume the Spurs take him at 4 and then just pray Castle is still there at 8.

@@colin1818 There isn't ONE elite basketball skill in Stephon Castle's game that I could look at and talk myself into drafting him with a top ten pick over other guard talent. The only meaningful attribute he brings to the table is his size. As a long term gambit, I just don't see forsaking skill and playmaking for size as a good move. I can't imagine what the spacing on the floor with castle would look like when the team already struggles to get any offence going from the perimeter. Just my opinion though.

@@dillamadukes21 - Castle is a complete basketball player. His shooting is the one skill that needs work, but there is very good evidence that he can improve it.
      Dilly is far from complete.
Mind you, I like both and would love to have both. But Dilly comes with a lot more asterisks, limitations and concerns.

    We need :
    - positions 1 & 3 + versatile
    - good defender (both)
    - at least 1 can shoot
    - can play in system, no ball dominance
    - Plan A - bigger size
    (4th) Risacher (8th) Castle
    - Plan B - smaller size
    (4th) Sheppard (8th) Holland

He's 164lbs now and he'll probably be around 170lbs by tip off this fall. I could see him reaching 180lbs by the end of his rookie contract if he commits to a rigorous strength and conditioning program. You actually don't want a guy that's as explosive and shifty as he is to get too big. Around 180 would be ideal for his body type.

There are zero good defenders in the league that are 6'1 and 180 pounds. That's just too small for today's NBA. Imagine him trying to guard Derrick White and then switching over to Tatum. Its not a sustainable scenario unless he turns into Kyrie Irving (Which he isn't). Spurs pick Risacher and Salaun because their potential and fit is the best
