One of my favorite things about this show is the parent characters (Mr McCall not withstanding). In so many teen shows the parents are just objectively terrible people and parents meanwhile this show has some really good parents that are genuinely involved in their kids lives and their kids friends lives. It just really makes this show unique for me
totally! some teen shows seem to even ignore/forget the existence of the parents because it would get in the way of the kids' shenanigans. I like that Teen Wolf keeps thinking of ways to actually write them into the story!
it's a big part of the problem, and how the show gave way too much screentime to Stiles. That and how once Melissa finds out, she stops treating Scott as her son, and just becomes his mentor.
That's bc stiles is the true main character, he's just some guy in a small town and one day it all changes and he's left to pick up the fractured pieces of their reality
@@novatryxward9372 no. Stiles is just the annoying asshole who uses his best friends trauma and suffering to live out his own d&d fantasies. Stiles to me is the most cliché character on teen wolf. I've seen his character type far too often to still be interested in him
my all time favourite teen wolf moment is scott and stiles in the hallway talking about some kind of metaphor for scott's role in a social situation and isaac walks in while scott is saying "i'm the hot girl" and, with absolutely no context of the conversation that led to it, isaac just goes "yes you are."
I made my roommate watch this show with me and we both thought Derek was the funniest guy ever, our thing was just editing him and his wide stance into random photos and memes like some brooding wheres waldo idk why it made me laugh every time but it did
derek in fanfic is exactly the derek you want he’s an austistic king with real after effects of the trauma he endured and usually a huge hesitancy towards any relationships
@@Marinlss Absolute icon; I'm the same way. I was introduced to the series through Sterek fanfic and have no other background. This video was like an alternate universe, and I want to go back 😭🤣
"Scott, he's just a guy" could have been the whole review honestly I love his confidence in becoming a vet considering he spends most of the show failing in Chemistry and Biology specifically
22:51 Something even funnier about using a police sketch is that later in the same season we see a picture of his ID without the light flash, meaning on record they have a current picture of him they just choose not to use it
the thing about Kira that hurts so much is that it was SO INTERESTING and could have been so good if it was just handled with real genuine care by the writers.
As an English teacher, hearing Julia talk about the pains of trying to teach The Crucible to a bunch of teenagers was too real, the first time I watched it. Hearing Derek follow it up with, “Why don’t you tell them it’s about McCarthyism” was the FUNNIEST shit, because like. Yeah, Derek, it sure is. What’s the rest of my lesson plan, buddy? God bless this mess.
A few months back I was walking around a mall in LA and I saw a man wearing a ridiculous leather jacket trimmed with fur and I thought, “I bet that’s an actor.” As I walked past, we locked eyes… and it was THE teen wolf.
I've been saying that about Allison's mom for YEARS. Killing her off was a huge mistake and I wish they could've brought her back somehow. The Argents honestly became pretty boring to me later on, and having one of their own be a werewolf could've been really cool and add a lot more depth.
Well, hunters in Teen Wolf have a code, and one of the rules is that you must kill yourself if you become a werewolf. Now, of course, some don't follow it. But Victoria seem to (at least, that part) and so she was duty-bound.
@@colt9836yeah. it makes sense that she'd want to follow through, but seriously it would've been so interesting if they allowed Chris and her to argue over her life, and/or allow her to be hesitant due to not wanting to leave her family
honestly I love Scott like his morals annoy me sm so I see the distaste, but I also love him for it like he's just a silly little guy to me he should be living his life doing silly things the show just won't let him
oh and I think the whole Lydia kiss thing was because it was the second full moon so he was acting on every impulse he had. tho still annoying and very easy to miss bc the show doesn't emphasize it too much lol!!
2 and a half hours? You spoil us. Thank you for this food! Edit: As someone who never watched Teen Wolf and just observed it from the general Tumblr distance, I can say that I was flummoxed to discover that Stiles wasn’t the protagonist of this series, given how fanworks lasered in on him! After this vid, I can see why, lol.
I watched the first season a year ago and reading this comment made me realize that I had legit completely erased Scott from my memory (like I didn't even remember he was in the show) and had convinced myself that Stiles was the protagonist. I think it's because Scott just came across as so incredibly bland to me.
I never got past the first few episodes of Teen Wolf but I've watched the pilot several times because there's something so compelling about it. The Jackson-Scott juice exchange lives in my mind rent-free. I laugh out loud every time I see it. Posey's tepid "My mom does the grocery shopping" is peak comedic delivery.
Speaking of fandom tumblr, I remember there being a fairly popular post about redoing the entire season 1 except giving Derek an intense bowl cut and that made your explanation of him so much funnier to me😭😭
Sometimes the homoerotic fanfiction pairings in some ya shows and books feels a bit forced, but teen wolf is genuinely the most homoerotic show where the women definitively seem to act as beards for the deeper romance between the male characters
That's because the creator and show runner is gay and was writing his teen erotica fantasies. Pretty much very gay guy I've talked with, who's watched the show said the same thing.
If I had the power to time travel I'd go back and hold the writers are gunpoint, forcing them to make every single character gay. Scisaac is real, sterek is real, Alison and Lydia are lesbians now, literally every single character is now gay. No exceptions. I'd consider the inevitable skyrocket in success to be my magnum opus.
The Derek-Teacher thing: they should have had it be that she had used some kind of charm or magic or something on him. Not necessarily to mind control him, but just subtly shift his opinion of her. On the "void" part, Japanese tradition has there be 5 elements: earth, air, water, fire, and void. However, it should be noted that this has no negative connotations. It's just the aether, the element that represents pure energy, from which the other elements emerge. It's spirituality and creativity.
The thing is canonly she basically used some seduction and illusion magic on him, it was essentially SA. Like the whole point of Jenefer is that she was a rouge/dark druid that was performing a dark magic ritual. The 5-fold cultic knot, gain power based on the sacrifices she makes. The first sacrifices are virgins, which is associated with seduction and illusion magic in most media and sources. However Teenwolf has terrible and frankly disgusting attitudes to sexual assault/loss of bodily autonomy, oddly enough specifically male sexual assault. As shown by Dereks mainly, Stiles later, and even Peter to a degree. Additionally, magic is poorly explained in Teenwolds which drags a lot of the lore down and distantly properly explains what happens with the 'magic scenes,' .
hi! i’m japanese american and i have a personal connection to camp (ie, my grandma was in camp) and i really appreciated how you framed ur take on incarceration camps! ja incarceration is rarely explored at all on tv so i appreciate them bringing it up, but it’s weird seeing it basically be a set piece and nothing more when it has such a complicated political history. i haven’t seen the episode in question but “asian woman and white man fall in love and then the white man dies” is already a trope, and then add on the fact that we’re supposed to sympathize with the soldier helping run the camp ?? is a little weird. thanks for your thoughtful discussion of why it seemed weird to you too, i appreciate your care in consuming media :) (note: internment refers to the imprisonment of “enemy aliens”, incarceration is the imprisonment of your own citizens. 2/3 of ppl in camp were american citizens, and the term “incarceration” makes this more clear)
I'm glad! And thank you, I didn't realize incarceration was more accurate. If I bring it up again in the other videos I will use the proper terminology!
@jane-mulcahy actually, it's argued that the more appropriate term is concentration camp for those Japanese imprisoned on US soil during WWII. The Japanese American National Museum discusses this, including on their IG. They were definitely incarcerated, but the confusion between internment/incarcerated is a problem alongside the tendency to pretend that we didn't have our own concentration camps on US soil by using more tame language, when concentration camp is more appropriate than simply stating we incarcerated them. Just FYI!
Also also, I'm so happy you love Derek, and the reasons you love him - because I feel the same 😂 I love him because Scott is sooo incredibly morally binary (everything is black and white with him and I loathe it), and Derek isn't. There's this one time in S3B I think? Where he smiles and I was so shocked lmao. I would've watched a whole show about Derek/Peter just doing pull ups and being morally grey
I am a Teen Wolf fanfic fan. By that I mean I got into the fandom through fics and have only watched 2 episodes lmao Watching your video helps make so much of fan portrayals make so much sense. My bestie watched the first few seasons and her favorite part of my journey into the fandom was how I never knew what exactly was canon between all the different fics. Usually you can tell after some fics what the actual canon stuff is, but with Teen Wolf I was constantly thinking I was wrong about canon lore. Your video clears up so much haha
This was painful for a bit as a Scott McCall stan TM, but I'm glad I stuck through!! I miss the way this show made me feel insane/incredibly happy for those first few seasons
I'm sorry 😂 tbh the more I watch interviews and stuff with Tyler Posey, the more I like him! I want to maybe delve into the character more when I cover the rest of the series. mostly now I feel bad for Posey that the character was so poorly written (in my view anyway)
@@jane-mulcahy can i ask an intresting question do you think some critics too harsh sometimes with this show i mean its mtv when have the made emmy award winners and everything and also i always think of stiles as the sokka of the group if you know what i mean
@@jane-mulcahy hahaha he's definitely not a perfect character, and the later seasons are definitely uh. Well spoiler alert but the writing certainly doesn't get BETTER. Love the way you talk about each season though, I hadn't seen your channel until this video!
@@mros977 To be fair, disliking Scott is not proof of irl beliefs. He's a TV character, which means his job is to be entertaining or at least an interesting vehicle for the plot. He is well-meaning, and someone described him as a teen romcom protagonist stuck in a supernatural horror show, but he's not entertaining. He regularly takes a back seat to the far more interesting and nuanced characters. Idk if race played a part in it considering the character would likely have been written the same way as a white guy, but Scott's main issue is that he's generic and lacks nuance.
A huge TV-pet peeve of mine is when teachers just tell their students everything they have to know about the piece of literature they are reading. That's not how teaching works 😭 So, no, Derek, she shouldn't start by flat out telling her students what kind of allegory The Crucible is, her students need to come to that conclusion on their own 😤
derek's wanted poster having a police sketch on it instead of literally any photograph they could have acquired in multiple different ways is sending meeeee
and a BAD police sketch at that. like even if there weren't any usable photos, since multiple people know exactly what he looks like and you have partial photos you should at least be able to get a good sketch
I agree with EVERY word of your Derek Rant (TM). I would have loved if the writers actually made an effort with his character! The main pet peeve I have with the series in general is that since Scott sucks as a character (and the actor can't overcome, at least partly, the bad writing like we see in Stiles or Derek's case) *they actively make all the other characters WORSE* :giving them inconsistent characterizations, less scenes, not using their backstories, ecc... just to make them not compete with the protagonist.
I would probably have less patience for it now, but in 2014 introducing an entire Asian family and centering a lot of the story on their history and love for each other when you want to use Asian mythology was a huge improvement over the general status quo of centering white people with maybe a 2-dimensional Asian mentor or love interest. Also having the nogitsune's origin story be tied to internment instead of being entirely ~ancient~ and ~foreign~ is good and I stand by it. (Admittedly: I'm Chinese not Japanese.)
Truly, the content we needed but didn’t deserve. I’m strapped in to watch this masterpiece and I’m sooooo excited to watch as someone who vicariously has lived teen wolf drama on Tumblr.
I actually love motel california. as someone who has dealt and still does deal with these issues I think it works really well in showing there's always a reason? yeah the reason here is supernatural but metaphor or whatever. and the ending monologue with Stiles and Scott? always makes me cry and I remember being SO GLAD it wasn't Alisson. it reinforces their friendship which at a lot of times Scott didn't seem to value much.
“Aren’t you glad you clicked on this video” yes I am. I was also I’m tumblr during that time and I’ve honestly never seen a single episode of this show. This is everything I’ve ever wanted and I subscribed in the first 20 minutes
2:04:34 “If this Stiles just threw up a bunch of bandages and this Stiles came out of the bandages, then who’s flying the plane?!” ✋🏾😂 I FREAKING CACKLED!!
Derek is absolutely my favorite character. Like I love stiles so much but Derek is just so awkward and I love how he just stands there like this the whole time 🧍🏻♂️he's like a grumpy cat, love him
This reddit comment perfectly explains why scott sucks narratively too "Like in any fandom with any character, there are surface-level reasons (Scott is a bad friend to Stiles, Scott is annoyingly obsessive over Allison, Scott is a bad alpha, Scott is stupid, etc...) and comprehensive reasons for disliking Scott. IMO, most if not all of the surface- level reasons can be attributed to people disliking Scott but not knowing/not being able to articulate why exactly, so they cite things the character did when the real problem is how he's fundamentally written. Scott is written like a self-insert Mary Sue whose primary character goal is to stay good and moral for the sake of morality itself - which is both wildly unrelatable and uncompelling to a lot of fans and ridiculously uncompatible with the violent fictional universe created for the show (yet the show never challenges it and instead bends over backwards to create loophole after loophole where Scott gets lucky and conveniently doesn't have to make choices himself that are outside of his black-and-white worldview). What's also very uncompelling is that (particularly in the later seasons), Scott never effectively strays from his goal to be good/moral and never makes deliberate choices that fail unless he has the "he was just doing the best he could with the information he had" padding that removes his responsibility for the consequences. We love it when characters make bad choices that make things worse and then learn from that experience, but Scott never does any of that (even in Season 5 his (arguably ooc and poorly written) mistakes are all attributed to misunderstandings or well-intentioned attempts to do good, so he's not called upon to change anything about how he operates to avoid making those mistakes again. All of this ultimately makes Scott feel less real, less like a believable, well-developed character who fits organically into this story, and more like a puppet being controlled by a writer (Jeff Davis) who lives vicariously through him and is thus too scared of making his puppet unlikable to audiences to give him any unflattering or nuanced agency within the story. What's more, Scott is also written to be special (a true alpha) for reasons that are undefined within the lore (but supposedly related to virtue and strength of character) and unsupported by any character consistency (the show takes a "pay no attention to the hypocrite behind the curtain" approach to any point where Scott makes choices (or rather, supports/allows other people's choices) that aren't good or moral or ethical), which gives the impression of him being special purely because some unseen authority says so and (much like with Elena Gilbert in TVD) nobody likes to be told by a story that the universe has crowned a character special for no comprehensible reason. It feels like gaslighting. Some people will buy it at face value, but once a fan does notice the discrepancies it's almost always a one-way ticket to disliking the character. In general, you should never, ever build a main character's whole shtick on morality or goodness or selflessness, etc... because there will come a point when you realize that that's severely limiting to your character's potential choices (and thus to your story as a whole) and you'll try to make the character a little more edgy, which then inevitably makes the character come apart at the seams unless you compensate for it by actually exploring that character change and development (and STOP praising the character for still being highly moral/good/selfless, etc... even though their choice actions have demonstrated that they're not).”
Peter points this out: "My family's names, my family's power, given to a child too afraid to kill anyone." Something like that. It shows that the narrative is AWARE that Scott is just being moral for the sake of moral.
Excellent points. Also, what kind of moral person has zero compassion or empathy for their best friend who was almost brutally murdered and just takes the word of someone about what happened who they haven't seen in 8 years? You find out every dang detail of what happened from the friend. I don't care if it takes all night or day.
the derek issue is basically the same with malia. she lives as a feral coyote for like 10 years after killing her family in a traumatic accident and within a short period of time after she's caught + turned back, she's in mexico sexy dancing on kira. all of a sudden she understands sexuality, the male gaze, etc. the audience is supposed to buy that she's "different" by her sometimes having messy hair or her growling at someone or her being lost in math class. but it all seems forced and suited for a moment. it's hollow. in reality she just seems like a moody teen girl rather than someone who's spend the majority of their life and development as a coyote. nowwwww i promise i'm not taking this teen show personally it just needed to be said!
My god my thoughts exactly it annoyed the fuck out of me!!! What do they mean that a person that has lived half of their life isolated in the wild would just be a normal behaving person for most part…
I loved this so much but I'm so shocked by the Scott hate 😂😂😂 I honestly thought he was a really sweet kid, a lot of the reasons you hate him felt to me like really typical "he's a teenage boy" stuff that I actually found pretty realistic and endearing. Like, even when he yells at Alison after telling her it was fine - it read as an actually pretty nuanced portrayal of teen conflict, where he wanted to tell her it was fine, but was actually always pretty upset by it, and where his refusal to apologize comes off as childish but also pretty age appropriate. Idk, I liked him a lot honestly 😂😂😂
i feel the same way! i really liked that Scott was a bit of an idiot quite often but not in the "sexual predator whose behavior gets excused because he's a hot main charakter way" (which a lot teen shows used to do) but just in the normal teenager way
I've never thought of a socially awkward/cringe Derek before but you've opened my eyes. I've seen the light and i need more. Great vid overall and i cant wait to watch the other parts!
Remember, Derek is a born werewolf, he isn't a human. So he doesn't quite understand our nuances and complexities. He doesn't understand personal space because wolves have no sense. He seems violent with his betas because as werewolves, they heal much faster so having a broken limb is probably, for us, having a cut.
55:21 I feel like Jenny Nicholson kicked off a rennaissance of longfrom retrospective videos on the shows we used to watch as teens because Mike's Mic and Friendly Space Ninja also acknowledged her.
Having never watched Teen Wolf but having consumed it by osmosis by being on tumblr and getting a general impression of what it's like, I actually said "WHAT" out loud in shock when you said what it's based on lol I was so baffled. But then you talked about the comedy elements and that was definitely something I didn't pick up from tumblr osmosis.
It’s a good thing that Derek wasn’t always that loner boring type of character because it lets us understand that Derek wasn’t always like that, in fact he wasn’t that dark until the fire and he wasn’t that mean until then and after when his sister was murder, so with him starting out like that you could say it was meant for him to kinda get a new pack with Scott and his crew to help heal him and go back to a more charming, funner, but much wiser Derek, it was all for his development.Just like in life we are not always one way things happen that may change us but with time we learn to grow with those pains and become our better selves
btw teen wolf is heavily inspired by buffy as jeff davis himself had talked about it, which is an inspo for A LOT of supernatural teen drama series but teen wolf unfortunately suffered a lot more with the writing than buffy
In high school this was me and my best friends show, we made fun of it whilst simultaneously both adoring it on a deep level. We could never tell how serious it was taking itself at any time and honestly we didn’t know how seriously we were taking it either
I think I watched this up to around season 3 or 4- what finally broke me, out of the utterly ridiculous moments on this show, was the reveal that Malia, despite having lived as a feral coyote for over half her life, was able to acclimate to society and become fully educated and adjusted and acclimated to society and a student at Beacon Hills high in seemingly a matter of months? Really? Also I missed Jackson.
I met Michael Hogan at a convention before and he's great. Told him I knew him from Teen Wolf and he dropped into his Grandpa Argent voice for the rest of the interaction and wrote MOUNTAIN ASH on the photo I got for him to autograph.
My first year of university I got really into Degrassi spurred on by your video which led me down a path of watching more teen shows I’d missed. This ended in a huge obsession with teen wolf where I watched so many video essays praising it and tearing it apart so this is just the perfect crescendo to that chapter of my life, thank you for the laughs and I’m glad I’m not the only one who found 3a incomprehensible.
Omg that comment “can’t wait for the teen wolf video” was from me I feel famous 🤣 Thank you for this!! I’m so excited to hear your thoughts on this masterpiece lol
When season 2 first aired, I remember being so excited to see Michael Hogan show up. I’d loved him in the Battlestar Galactica reboot: another show with some very campy aspects thrown haphazardly into very serious topics. Honestly, “his username is Allison. His password is also Allison” is an absolute classic moment of camp. I remember people changing their tumblr’s title to that line because of how hilarious it was. For all that Scott wasn’t a compelling character, he gave use some amazing moments!
Honestly I’m gonna disagree with you at 1:11:30 Having your oc have blue eyes because they’ve killed an innocent before is a great backstory creator for teen girls. It adds so much ~mystique~ to your oc as they dodge questions on their past if there’s evidence they can’t get away from to their tragic backstory. It’s like having scars they hide
THREE PARTS ?? Ohhhhhh we're eating good also THANK YOU FOR THE SHOUTOUT 😭😭 Can't wait to dive into this, you're an absolute legend 🙏 Edit: This was a work of art.
About the claws and Boyd dying, you're right the claws aren't long but it looks like based on where Derek's hands are they'd definitely be long enough to penetrate his lungs
Wild to watch this vid as someone who was on on tumblr in the 2010s who never watched Teen Wolf. I'm like 'oh yeah I know a bit about this show!' and then you show me the protagonist who I have never seen in my life.
Rewatching this video and I just noticed how hilariously wrong the literature "discussion" here with Jennifer and Derek (1:36:01) is. She lists Romeo and Juliet as the example of a fake death working out? It absolutely did not work out for them. Juliet's fake death plan is literally what causes the tragedy.
HELPMEEE you're so funny! some of my favorite bits so far: -derek with the widest stance ASDHSFHASJF i was just mentioning that to myself when you put the clips in -NICKNAME AND PASSWORD AS BOTH ALLISON SCENE... OH MY GOD that is so stupid. scott is a true npc. like how do you go out of your way to do that for a crush you've had for a couple of months max?? what was the nick and password before you met her? scott scott? -YOU WERE SO RIGHT ABOUT THE SKETCH THING HELPME WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT
it’s not talked about a lot, but i felt like it was weird that there was a lack of sapphic/wlw characters in teen wolf, and they’re not even side characters, like danny or ethan. like it’s great that gay characters have a bit of spotlight, but there are two canon sapphic relationships and they’re not actually shown.
I totally agree! the only wlw in season 3 were a couple briefly featured in 3A, one of whom immediately dies via darach sacrifice. oh and the other, bereaved girl goes on to make out with Stiles at a party in 3B.
@@hekimeti1614 I _think_ they read you as being sarcastic? Like, "Oh, yeah, you're so right, Jeff Davis said he wanted the show to be without homophobia, what a blunder". A really weird and cynical read, but maybe the "Oh" primed them to assume you were being sarcastic past that.
I loved Teen Wolf when it was on (pre-season 5a/b). I was always meh about Scott as well and wished they gave characters like Derek more screen time. Stiles carries the show and I grew to love Lydia as she gets more intrenched in the supernatural side of Beacon Hills. Her and Stiles solving the mystery of the season together always makes me smile. And Lydia’s friendship with Alison I feel is far more fleshed out than Scott and Stiles.
im watching this for the second time in 48 hours because you are so correct about everything some might even say you’re the true alpha of teen wolf commentary videos. the kanima’s master if the kanima was talking about supernatural teen dramedies for 2 hours. the anchor of my wolfgirlish hyperfixation on an mtv show that died with a whimper 6 years ago. the gay alpha twin that combines with my lycanthropically diseased brain to make one larger, meatier, more bisexual cgi monster. the culturally insenstive fanficified japanese demon that-
I've been listening to this as background noise for a few days and just keep hearing sentences and all I can do is stop whatever I'm doing and just say, "Okay."
I never watched the show but saw a ton of fandom stuff from the show on tumblr and I’m shocked to learn that Dylan O’Brien doesn’t play the main character 💀
Your criticism of scott is so valid. The most disappointing thing about him becoming basically the werewolf messiah is the fact that hes objectively a bad leader - hes sanctimonious and self centered and incapable of prioritizing his pack/friends. Literally the only thing he cares about is allison. Like i know none of the werewolves in that town were alpha material but scott is the last person i would nominate for true alpha. I know his bad traits were exaggerated for humor but jfc
1:35:44 - missed opportunity for a gratuitous Degrassi clip: Ali: "So you really thought Animal Farm was about pigs?" Bruce: "It's not?" Claire: "It's a political allegory about the Russian Revolution!" Bruce: "Wait a minute - pigs started the Russian Revolution?" (816)
Absolutely love this and can't wait for the rest of the videos! In regard to Derek and Jennifer in season 3A, I remember a lot of fandom talk about her essentially casting a spell(?) on him to make him fall in love with her. I don't know if it was something the creator said at some point (he said a lot of garbage, so it's always a possibility) or if it was a weak headcanon to wipe out the romance from Derek's history, but it seemed worth mentioning. Season 3A was a mess. lmao
This was also right as the Sterek backlash happened. They queerbaited hard at SDCC during season 2 and then slapped us with this horrid "romance" in 3a.
oooooo I'm so excited for this! Funny enough, I also thought that I had watched a lot of teen wolf when I was younger, but then when I actually watched the entire series during the pandemic I realized that actually, no, I just saw gifs all over my dashboard whenever a new episode came out. Its amazing how much of an impact tumblr has had on our generation lol
The "alphas using their claws to mind meld/exchange memories with someone" thing was also established in S1, when Peter tricked Scott with false memories about how he accidentally killed Laura and he was only gonna hurt those involved with the Hale fire. The flashbacks where we see Peter trapped in the basement and healing from his burns and being out of it in the woods were transfered to Scott that way.
This show was my everything in high school, and it still means a lot to me. I'm excited to see you covering it! I also absolutely ADORE the original movie and its absolute absurdity, I can't wait to see you get to it!
My only experience with this show in the past is scrolling past the many Stiles edits and posts on various social media sites, so i was very surprised to learn Dylan O'Brien was not the main character of this show. i think a lot of people agree with you in sense of their feelings towards Scott, even if it's less of a dislike and more of a disregard. Awesome video, loved your humour and totally relate to the humorous, campy, way of watching shows, specifically like this, it's just so more enjoyable to not take these shows seriously and poke fun at some of the aspects.
jane, what if i told you that motel california was widely regarded as the best episode of teen wolf back when the show was running. no joke, we all thought it was a masterpiece.
Jane, I am so happy you are able to explore your interests and share them with us! No matter what video you produce, I will always watch it because you are so awesome and the content is something so unexpected lol and the dedication is real. That being said: I have always loved werewolfs so much, my fave public domain monster by far, and it can be hard to find good movies that don't use it as a metaphor for SA (so common! re: The Howling, for example). Just putting that out there: but a video on the metaphors of werewolfism as depicted in media would be awesome
like I said in the video, I've gotten into werewolf cinema in general and I agree! I think the area I'm most interested in is lycanthropy as a metaphor for puberty/adolescence, like the imagery is very straightforward and I feel like actually corresponds very interestingly to female puberty specifically? like I said, so many caves for werewolf spelunking
This show had such a choke hold on me in my pre teen - teen years. I absolutely loved this show and can talk about it for ever. And I feel like most ppl I’ve met have not watched it so I’m always down to watch a 2 hour long video about this show
Your Derek wishlist makes me so mad at how good he could have been as an awkward weirdo, but most of all I wish with the Blake romance they’d gone full bewitching to spare me having to watch Derek Werewolf Hale just do tyler hoechlin smile for like three episodes
For the season 3A with the magical tree stump, it isn’t visible to the naked eye so the werewolves have to use there other eyes to see it. They don’t really tell you about that until like season 5.
The hallucination scene in season 2 really just hammers home that it seems like the writers were flying by the seat of their pants with these characters and their motivations because Scott has so much fucking baggage later on in the series that would have been perfect to insert there, but no. Let's just have it be some stupid goddamn jealousy thing while the rest of the characters are having genuine existential crises.
I truly only watched Teen Wolf for Stiles. I found out about the show because i stumbled on some Sterek ship videos. I was into Stiles as a tumblr dark boy because I was into fixing up trauma and evil guys. I shipped him with like everyone. It started my Dylan O'Brien phase. It was a strong phase. Stiles ended up on my potential baby names list. (In my defense it's similar to my favorite name Miles)
Part 2 is finally here! It only took me 11 months!! Awoooooooo!!!

YES lmaoo it's what he deserved 😔 in my heart it's canon
One of my favorite things about this show is the parent characters (Mr McCall not withstanding). Melissa McCall is the goat and I will take no objections.
**Stares in Riverdale**
Yep! It was nice to see a teen show for once that wasn’t like “your parents are the enemy”
42:11 stiles has more emotional scenes with Scott’s mom than Scott does
this is SO real
it's a big part of the problem, and how the show gave way too much screentime to Stiles.
I've seen his character type far too often to still be interested in him
@@liliaethJughead Jones?
my all time favourite teen wolf moment is scott and stiles in the hallway talking about some kind of metaphor for scott's role in a social situation and isaac walks in while scott is saying "i'm the hot girl" and, with absolutely no context of the conversation that led to it, isaac just goes "yes you are."
I wish the show just embraced its comedy instead of trying to be serious
And thus, an unending series of Scisaac fanfiction was born
Isaac leaving the show broke me. He was in my top three Best Bois! This scene was one of the many reasons he was one of my favorites :(
i was literally in tears over the subplot where they think stiles has the same disease that killed his mom
SAME omfg
I was so broken for that whole process, I can’t even tell you😭
"My mom does all the grocery shopping" was the funniest joke in the series. Just so hilarious.
I made my roommate watch this show with me and we both thought Derek was the funniest guy ever, our thing was just editing him and his wide stance into random photos and memes like some brooding wheres waldo idk why it made me laugh every time but it did
brooding where’s waldo😭😭😭
Werewaldo, if you will (:
I bet this what stiles would do if he watched this show XD
please give me some kind of resource for this! Like, if you could post this somewhere and share the link. I NEED TO SEE WIDE STANCE WEREWALDO!!
derek in fanfic is exactly the derek you want he’s an austistic king with real after effects of the trauma he endured and usually a huge hesitancy towards any relationships
I've never watched teen Wolf but I LOOVE Sterek fanfics, they work so well together and it seems Derek is very different from the TV show
@@Marinlss Absolute icon; I'm the same way. I was introduced to the series through Sterek fanfic and have no other background. This video was like an alternate universe, and I want to go back 😭🤣
"Scott, he's just a guy" could have been the whole review honestly
I love his confidence in becoming a vet considering he spends most of the show failing in Chemistry and Biology specifically
"Please, give me the lesbian werewolf-druid romance" is going straight to the favorite jane quotes list
"The mild block of cheese that is Scott McCall"
In this moment there is nothing said that could have been more true. True poetry.
that line killed me 😂😂😂
22:51 Something even funnier about using a police sketch is that later in the same season we see a picture of his ID without the light flash, meaning on record they have a current picture of him they just choose not to use it
lolol thank you for alerting me to this that makes it so much funnier
not only did the hales give us sisters laura and cora, they gave us aunt and niece talia and malia.
😭 noooo I hadn't even thought of that
now that you’ve pointed this out, it’s mildly infuriating that Talia and Malia are pronounced differently 😭
yes slay
@@im_azraellefun fact i knew about malia far before her name was mentioned in the show and i head-pronounced it like talia
And slightly less related there's a brother and sister in S5 called Theo and Tara, this show loves it's family alliteration
This video is the first time I’m finding out that the main character of teen wolf is in fact NOT Dylan o’Brien 💀
Your real for thinking this honestly
the thing about Kira that hurts so much is that it was SO INTERESTING and could have been so good if it was just handled with real genuine care by the writers.
I’m so glad you talked about “his password is also Allison” because I think about that clip all the time
I've been saying that about Allison's mom for YEARS. Killing her off was a huge mistake and I wish they could've brought her back somehow. The Argents honestly became pretty boring to me later on, and having one of their own be a werewolf could've been really cool and add a lot more depth.
They were planning on turning her into a werewolf according to the actress but then they didn't contact her again.
@@bunnywar Really? That's pretty cool that they at least considered it, too bad they didn't contact her again.
A video that did not need to be made:
honestly I love Scott like his morals annoy me sm so I see the distaste, but I also love him for it like he's just a silly little guy to me he should be living his life doing silly things the show just won't let him
oh and I think the whole Lydia kiss thing was because it was the second full moon so he was acting on every impulse he had. tho still annoying and very easy to miss bc the show doesn't emphasize it too much lol!!
"Where. Are you. Getting. Your. JUICE!"
"My mom does all the grocery shopping...?"
Unwavering dedication to just trying to be a normal teen comedy protagonist even though he’s clearly in a supernatural horror drama.

After this vid, I can see why, lol.
it's been a rough few months...
The fandom was kind of racist and terrible to Tyler Posey, the actual protagonist, it was not a fun time RIP
@@magicallyphoebe isn't he white?
@@kwarra-an His mom was Mexican, his dad is white.
I watched the first season a year ago and reading this comment made me realize that I had legit completely erased Scott from my memory (like I didn't even remember he was in the show) and had convinced myself that Stiles was the protagonist. I think it's because Scott just came across as so incredibly bland to me.
Ive NEVER heard someone dislike season 3 so much. Everyone ive ever heard agrees it is BY FAR the best season
Speaking of awkward Derek, the fandom has a whole #failwolf because of how awkward he is/should be from years of being alone and trauma.
That was my favorite thing to learn while watching this show
FAILWOLF HOW COULD I HAVE FORGOTTEN
I never got past the first few episodes of Teen Wolf but I've watched the pilot several times because there's something so compelling about it. The Jackson-Scott juice exchange lives in my mind rent-free. I laugh out loud every time I see it. Posey's tepid "My mom does the grocery shopping" is peak comedic delivery.
Speaking of fandom tumblr, I remember there being a fairly popular post about redoing the entire season 1 except giving Derek an intense bowl cut and that made your explanation of him so much funnier to me😭😭
Part One?! Jane is in her Mikes Mic unhinged deep dive phase and I love it - I can only image how unhinged the Wrong video will be
Sometimes the homoerotic fanfiction pairings in some ya shows and books feels a bit forced, but teen wolf is genuinely the most homoerotic show where the women definitively seem to act as beards for the deeper romance between the male characters
This show is for men who like MEN. And lacrosse
Yes but I will die for Stiles and Lydia.

Scott and Isaac would’ve been so adorable together
The Derek-Teacher thing: they should have had it be that she had used some kind of charm or magic or something on him. Not necessarily to mind control him, but just subtly shift his opinion of her.
On the "void" part, Japanese tradition has there be 5 elements: earth, air, water, fire, and void. However, it should be noted that this has no negative connotations. It's just the aether, the element that represents pure energy, from which the other elements emerge. It's spirituality and creativity.
THIS IS SUCH A WILDLY GOOD IDEA!!!!
As someone who didn’t watch this show until 2021 and fully reverted to my tumblr era after 1 episode, I’ve never felt so seen
hi! i’m japanese american and i have a personal connection to camp (ie, my grandma was in camp) and i really appreciated how you framed ur take on incarceration camps! ja incarceration is rarely explored at all on tv so i appreciate them bringing it up, but it’s weird seeing it basically be a set piece and nothing more when it has such a complicated political history. i haven’t seen the episode in question but “asian woman and white man fall in love and then the white man dies” is already a trope, and then add on the fact that we’re supposed to sympathize with the soldier helping run the camp ?? is a little weird. thanks for your thoughtful discussion of why it seemed weird to you too, i appreciate your care in consuming media :)
(note: internment refers to the imprisonment of “enemy aliens”, incarceration is the imprisonment of your own citizens.
So agree. I hated how little he was featured the longer the series ran

That's not how teaching works 😭 So, no, Derek, she shouldn't start by flat out telling her students what kind of allegory The Crucible is, her students need to come to that conclusion on their own 😤
That’s how a lot of teachers teach tho :/
Guess what, there are PLENTY of theories on education and that os hist one of them.

"Frankly I'm in favor of taking everything from Scott" LMAO okay yea that got me
I agree with EVERY word of your Derek Rant (TM).
Dude I love Derek, it feels like his character is in a completely different show than everyone else 💀💀💀
I love the way Derek stands around in season 1
I would probably have less patience for it now, but in 2014 introducing an entire Asian family and centering a lot of the story on their history and love for each other when you want to use Asian mythology was a huge improvement over the general status quo of centering white people with maybe a 2-dimensional Asian mentor or love interest. Also having the nogitsune's origin story be tied to internment instead of being entirely ~ancient~ and ~foreign~ is good and I stand by it. (Admittedly: I'm Chinese not Japanese.)
The fact that I clicked i m m e d i a t e l y . Derek is the best. They make him look so cool but he lowkey loses every fight. I love it.

This reddit comment perfectly explains why scott sucks narratively too
"Like in any fandom with any character, there are surface-level reasons (Scott is a bad friend to Stiles, Scott is annoyingly obsessive over Allison, Scott is a bad alpha, Scott is stupid, etc...) and comprehensive reasons for disliking Scott.
Yes! Exactly! That put it into words perfectly
Peter points this out:
"My family's names, my family's power, given to a child too afraid to kill anyone."
Something like that.
I love Scott. I get that he may not be the most interesting to some, but I love what he grows into over the duration of the show.
Having never watched Teen Wolf but having consumed it by osmosis by being on tumblr and getting a general impression of what it's like, I actually said "WHAT" out loud in shock when you said what it's based on lol I was so baffled. But then you talked about the comedy elements and that was definitely something I didn't pick up from tumblr osmosis.
yeah most of the stuff on tumblr was just like gif sets of Stiles crying and whatever
I loved derek's character and still do. a hale prequel would have been lovely to see with all of the hale family.
So basically this is 2 hours+ on why Lydia, Coach, and Stiles carried the show 😂
I met Michael Hogan at a convention before and he's great.
As someone who used to be OBSESSED with Teen Wolf, I am so beyond ready for this!

Having your oc have blue eyes because they’ve killed an innocent before is a great backstory creator for teen girls. It adds so much ~mystique~ to your oc as they dodge questions on their past if there’s evidence they can’t get away from to their tragic backstory. It’s like having scars they hide

Rewatching this video and I just noticed how hilariously wrong the literature "discussion" here with Jennifer and Derek (1:36:01) is. it’s not talked about a lot, but i felt like it was weird that there was a lack of sapphic/wlw characters in teen wolf, and they’re not even side characters, like danny or ethan.
like it’s great that gay characters have a bit of spotlight, but there are two canon sapphic relationships and they’re not actually shown.
I totally agree! the only wlw in season 3 were a couple briefly featured in 3A, one of whom immediately dies via darach sacrifice. oh and the other, bereaved girl goes on to make out with Stiles at a party in 3B.

I loved Teen Wolf when it was on (pre-season 5a/b). I was always meh about Scott as well and wished they gave characters like Derek more screen time. 2:09:07 "RIP nogistune. you came, you saw, you served c*nt" always catches me off guard lmao
Season 3A was a mess. lmao
lolol it sounds like they just started saying that retroactively after everyone disliked it!
This was also right as the Sterek backlash happened. They queerbaited hard at SDCC during season 2 and then slapped us with this horrid "romance" in 3a.
Every time you say "Scott" I'm reminded of Dr. Evil being incredibly disappointed in his son.
"Scott, you just don't get it, do ya? You don't."
oooooo I'm so excited for this!
Funny enough, I also thought that I had watched a lot of teen wolf when I was younger, but then when I actually watched the entire series during the pandemic I realized that actually, no, I just saw gifs all over my dashboard whenever a new episode came out. Its amazing how much of an impact tumblr has had on our generation lol
my favorite thing was how the teen wolf wiki includes such detailed mentions of the product placement lmao. such a good video 😝
Awesome video, loved your humour and totally relate to the humorous, campy, way of watching shows, specifically like this, it's just so more enjoyable to not take these shows seriously and poke fun at some of the aspects.
jane, what if i told you that motel california was widely regarded as the best episode of teen wolf back when the show was running. no joke, we all thought it was a masterpiece.
this is so jenny nicholson core and i truly love that for you
Jane, I am so happy you are able to explore your interests and share them with us!
@@jane-mulcahy def hoping ginger snaps makes an appearance on ur list (im sure it will)
This show had such a choke hold on me in my pre teen - teen years.
Am I the only man who has this as a guilty pleasure? I could talk about this show forever tbh
