These lessons so far really help me to break free of my brain barrier to always play the scales in the 3 octave ranges the same old way, and help me become more creative/improvisational by trying to follow what your doing Will, which seems to be a real skill, and requires lots of practice in itself. Scales I do fine. it's when I try to be creative with them that everything gets mashed up. I'm enjoying the lessons. Thanks Will.
I now have a better understanding of just playing the scale and listening to where it fits on the backing track. Thank you Will.
No worries!
@Will Wilde,
Really love your approach of using a backing track for context. It really helps to use the scale in time and noodle around in it. Thanks 👉💥
These videos are excellent. With the theory and the demonstration of how to use the lesson, this really helps. Thanks Will !!
Fabulous stuff! Thanks Will !
Very inspiring lesson. Thanks for sharing, Will.
Great lesson Will !!! Very helpful and simple to understand. Thanks !
Great lesson, cheers Will
Thank you for the lesson, Will!!!!!! It's awesome!
Wow great information. Great playing too.
Will Thank you for making these complex ideas easily digestible.
You make it look so easy!
Thanks. That's what I'm trying to do with this series! It can be as simple or complex as you want to make it
Another excellent lesson Will, thank you 👏✅
Very nice groove. I love Dorian.
Will- I just love this teaching you do on 3rd Position. It's clear. Concise. Well Done. Thank you so much!
Thanks Jeff!
You are an inspiration, love your style. Stopped playing for last year due to cervical injury, so happy to get back to learning. Purchased a Wilde tuned harmonica too, look forward to moving forward again. Thanks Brother!
I am familiar with several positions on the harmonica, but your advice opens up a clearer way of thinking of them. Great. Thanks.
The modes are a great way to get started playing in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 12th position!
Wow Will genuinely ,amazing .
Extremely helpful
Thanks Will...learning some great stuff from your vids..
Glad to hear that, thanks Kurt!
Great lesson and many thinks!
Brilliant video Will! Thanks so much for sharing this 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
No problem, thanks!
A new world open for me🙂very interesting for me to learn🤗 thank you!
Thank you for posting this wonderful lesson, Will!
A great way (for me, at any rate) of remembering how scales sound and then how to play them correctly is knowing a few well-known songs that use those scales. I was playing the scale, and then Michael Jackson's "Thriller" popped into my mind, and lo and behold, it is indeed in the Dorian scale/mode!
Two questions, Will: When you go to a jam, how do you know that the guitarist or keyboard player is playing in this mode? And, 2, if you want them to play in this mode, how do you get them to do that? Do you simply request sthg in the Dorian mode?
J’adore !
That layout sure works for you
Cheers
Thanks Will
Thanks I wasnt progressing until this, lets hope i can reach second position, love !!
Thanks so much for these videos man.
No problem, thanks! Still a couple more to come in this series
Great lesson.
Thanks David
Jam to Quist all the time on Guitar...did this one a good bit....Nice Jam on Harmonica Will
AWESOME!!!!!
Fantastic!! Thx!
Thank you!
You should partner live with Quist for a bunch of harp/guitar tracks! You two would blow up you tube!
Very useful !
Glad you found it helpful! Check out my course for more in depth tips on improvising with scales: www.willwildeharmonicamasterclass.com
Merci énormément
Thank you
Thanks man.
Smokin!!!!!!!!
Awesome :) thanks for sharing this and this series about modes!
Do you always go for a funky style on 3rd position / dorian mode?can't wait for Aeolian mode !!
Not always. I like it for funk but it's great for slow minor blues too.
Awesome
Thanks!
Thanks silly me. great last 2 videos very helpful for a predominately ear player. A few pennies dropped1
thanks. when i play in 3rd i always go to the blusier scale. this really has a different sound
Like it🤘
Thanks!
Thank you so much Will!!! Could you make a lesson about pentatonic scale, major and minor or explain how to make pentatonic from minor and major scale???? Thank you for your music and lessons!
Thanks Vladimir. As it happens I have a video coming soon on this exact topic! Thanks for the suggestion.
Love the lesson and understand how you use the modes on a C major scale (on C Harp) and how the modes can be applied when the band changes key.. But, how does this principle work if you're starting point is, for example, a G major scale ?
I have a harp set up in a mode by Power Harps. It's a long special 20
Couple tank traps
Make sure I work them over on slow downer til they are pure EXPRESSION
Thanks a lot for this. Does this apply to all harmonica keys also, even though the notes are different? So Dorian scale third position on an A harp would be exactly as you taught here, only it would be the "B Dorian scale"... is that right?
Yes that's right. Thanks
Thanks a lot Will for this video.
What do you think about playing in dorian mode on a ionian backtrack (ex D dorian on C major backtrack) ?
Michel
Well it's the same notes, the only difference is which note you focus on as your root.
I just watched this gr8 instructional vid again! Thanks, Will! I have a general question about your style: You often run up to notes, maybe more than anyone else out there. Curiously, how did you come to adopt that approach? Did someone teach you to play that way? Did you find it easier to hit those notes that way? Did you just think it sounded better/cooler than not running up to the notes, i.e. just hitting the notes head on? Thanks in advance for your reply!
It's for impact, it's something I got from listening to Gary Moore
@@willharmonicawilde It certainly is impactful! Thanks!

Nice one, Will, liked it a lot. How the hell do you do a 10b bend though??!! Another tutorial there, me thinks.
Thanks Les. It's the same as any other blow bend. I have an old lesson on it here: ua-cam.com/video/wQBqeNMjB-g/v-deo.html I've always said the HALF step bend on hole ten is the hardest bend on the whole harp to achieve (with good intonation), you have to go really gentle on it, the whole step is much easier.

In my mind I'm using draw 1 as the root note when I play in this position.
Maybe thinking in terms of draw 4 will offer a slightly different approach.
Thanks
The root note is D, so draw 1, draw 4 and draw 8 are all root notes
@@willharmonicawilde I know, just different octaves. What I meant to say was my playing usually centers around draw 1 when I play in this position. Thanks again. I enjoyed this video.
You were going to add a link to the backing track,........Please.
It's in the description, below the video
Hey Will, is that tune at the beginning of the vid an improvisation or can I actually find it somewhere?
Its all improvised. There is a link to the backing track in the description below the video
@@willharmonicawilde yeah, saw that, thanks! Without your harmonica it's not as fun though haha
I'm turning Amp way way way up

what set up do you have to give your harp that beautiful overdriven sound?
Either a Mesa Boogie Mk V or a Marshall SLP 1959
Mic is just a standard low impedance SM58
@@willharmonicawilde I've been using a sm57 I have a hard time holding the sm58,. Do those 2 mics have comparable sound?
@@79rapture I recently A/B'd the 57 and the 58 in the studio and listened to them back. Literally couldn't tell the difference! So whichever you find more comfortable, I prefer the 58 to grip.
Will should there not be a 3 D single bend in the dorian mode as well?
No. That would be a minor 6th. Dorian has a major 6th.
@@willharmonicawilde thanks Will, so when we play modes are we to think positions as well? Like, in this lesson we are in 1 st position, but Dorian could be played in 2nd, 3rd, etc? as well?.. I am so confused 😕
@ado sigmar if you are playing your major scale in 1st Position, then the Dorian mode from that will automatically put you in third. But technically, with overblows, you could play any of the modes in any position
