The best ever world cup. Will probably never be bettered. You only have to hear Nessun Dorma and it sends most of us all into a dreamy sort of trance. Happy days!
Thanks for bringing back all those wonderful memories. I watched all the matches in my local at the time, Paddy McCormack's pub in Mountown in Dublin. The nineties were Ireland's glory years not just in sport but in many areas. A time of great and positive change in our country. Looking at it today I have to ask where did it all go wrong? RonanG Iron Mountain Movies
I'm Italian but I do have a weak spot for Ireland. I respect their fans and their great passion. You will be living in the glory days again. Cheers to you all.
I'm not a footie fan.. I'd nearly say I'm sick of it with the dives etc.. but I have to say, I think even if we win the rugby this year, it wouldn't be the same as the mayhem of italia 90. Seeing that old man in tears, and the music, always breaks my heart. And yes I know where I was when O'Leary scored.. One good reason to be as old as I am : ) Best of luck Ireland.
This brings back great memories....when we won the penalty shoot out (or any other match in the tournement) all the neighbour kids ran out onto the big feild op my house and cheered and shouted and the cars driving past would beep their horns and cheer aswell. It reminds me that we didnt have much but what we did have was great pride in the little land of ours...Eire. People may laugh and slag that we still talk about WC90 but they were great memories.
brings a tear to my eye...irish soccer was at its best when we had no money in this country.there was a sense of togetherness, passion and certainly a stonger will to compete than we will probably ever get again. i agree with porticello. The nation holds its breath...........
this is my favourite video on all of youtube. such memories of national joy and unity. you wouldn't get that nowadays... with prosperity comes cynicism, unfortunately.
I was 6 at the time and it breaks my heart i wasn't old enough to remember the whole thing, i can remember been allowed to stay up late for the dutch game and can clearly remember everything about quinny's goal. My fav memory is McLoughlin's equaliser against the north in 93 i absolutely balled my eyes out, will never forget it, awesome memories
I was an Irish tour bus driver sitting outside that stadium in my bus watching this on the TV with a whole bunch of Italian cops. During that penalty I got so nervous I couldn't watch it and jumped off the bus. Seconds later the bus erupted with cheers and all the cops shook my hand. Oh what memories.
Nearly 17 Years Ago to the day, Probably the best summer ever, People in Ireland were never happier, No Matter what we do in the future rugby , football , etc. It will be hard to Beat that "Summer of 90" for sheer Euphoria
I cant help tearing up watching this. When O'Learys penalty when in, Every person in a whole country was happy collectively for those moments, Joy for all North, and South, rich and poor, when has that ever happened again?
I can remember the penalty shoot out against Romania. I was only six years old and at my best friends house. Every time a penalty was taken we ran out to the street and kicked a ball to each other a few times and ran back in for the next penalty! God Bless Ireland!
I wonder if we'll ever get 'that' back. We can qualify for World Cups - but that year was something else. I can remember every kid in our neighbourhood out kicking balls around the streets...
i will never ever ever forget that penelty shootout as long as i live. when dave o leary scored the last. the WHOLE fuckin street came out there were hugs everywhere and oh my god how the beer flowed that day. good man jack for getting us there.
Hopefully Giovanni will help us to do more in 2010. Best thing the FAI did since firing McCarthy. We could have won in 2002 if he hadn't tried to ambush Keano. We were as good as the defeated finalists Germany without Keano, what could we have done with him?
does anyone know the track of that smashing tune when Joe enters the van with the netherland fans? The video is named: "Ireland Italia 90 Joe Trip" on youtube.
I disagree. Keane pointed out the inadequacies of Ireland's preparations and was then sent home by that braying ass. He let nobody down. He was SENT HOME. He didn't walk out. McCarthy showed against Spain, Russia and Switzerland just how inept he was. He's doing really well now too isn't he. It was Keane, almost single handedly who got Ireland to the finals in 2002. His performances were immense against Holland and Portugal. You should be kissing his arse not saying he let you down.
The best ever world cup. Will probably never be bettered. You only have to hear Nessun Dorma and it sends most of us all into a dreamy sort of trance. Happy days!
This really does bring you to the verge of tears and they're tears i never want to wipe away. Im so proud that im Irish. Best supporters in the world
