      I thought you might assess the problem I have with occasional flameouts.
      I discovered it was because of tiny air bubbles produced by the diesel pump that accumulated in a an upper bent in the fuel line to the heater.
      Eventually it entered the combustion chamber and extinguished the flame.
      Causing a lot of white smoke and diesel leaking before giving an error code and shutting off.
      Does anyone else have this problem?
      And is there a solution other than replacing the pump?

      Hi ya.. I watched your video and tried all you said. Unfortunately it still wouldn't light. So I took the clean a step further, and it's now working like it was when it was brand new. Just to make sure that it wasn't a fluke, I repeated the same process on the other 2 dead heaters that I had kept when they failed. All 3 now work perfectly! Video is on my page, hope it helps! Thanks for posting this to help others who may be struggling.

    Turn off Heater, Blow Air throw Combustion Chamber Intake, and watch the Soot come out
    These Heater run through a Shut Down Process
    Fuel Pump Stops = Self Sustain Burn Stops
    Glow Plug Turns On = Burn off excess Diesel
    Fan Blows to cool down
    Glow Plug turns Off
    Fan reduces until 2 green bars are left, then you can Pull Power or Lose Power, any other time will result in Blocked Jets and a pain to get up to temp

    Your not going to believe this. I installed a deisel heater in the trunk of my Lincoln. I added the extended exhaust pipe. I carefully routed the exhaust under the framerail the back upwards 4" creating a trap in the exhaust. It ran fine. I was very happy. But then it got extremely cold. No problem. I fired up my Deisel heater. Only 3 months old and she was running great. Then I noticed the exhaust was dripping water. Then the heater shut down. I tried several times to restart it. It would try to start. Pour out white smoke. Then shut down. I was upset. I ordered another heater. Today I was going to remove the heater and install the new one. As I stopped for a coffee break. I was trying to search videos on the subject. I came across this video. I thought to myself.. NO WAY iT could be something so simple . I got out of my car. And crawled under my car. I cut the exhaust straps and let the pipe down. About 6 ounces of water came out.
    I tried to fire up the heater. It fired right up. Lot's if white smoke. But it was soon to dissipate. The heater is running like a champ now. I wanted to say thank you. And I'm going to buy you a couple of bears. Thanks again.

    I am a mechanic that's certified on all Espar/Eberspacher products i broadly agree with this video.
    One thing I disagree with though,
    Every 2000 run hours you should replace that ignition mesh. If you are in a serious bind you can do as he described. The meshes are very cheap, even the espar official ones. Get the green gaskets as well. It's very important or you will be wasting a lot of diesel and having combustion products(carbon monoxide!!) getting into your heated area. LIVING area. You'll be breathing that stuff.
    Remove the glow pin with a 12mm wrench, use a small screwdriver and needle nose pliers to remove the mesh.
    All Bolts are torx T27 except for one holding the control box which is T20.
    If you are not confident about it, ask somebody you know or bring it in for professional service. Prolonged carbon monoxide causes brain damage and headaches. If you live in a bus/van and rely on these heaters... Please, do it right. For your own sake.

    My intake and exhaust have low spots in them on the one I have in the cab of my pickup. I drilled small holes at the lowest point and haven't had moisture issues. I don't run it for more than a few hours at a time though so your mileage may vary. I have ran it below -30°C a bunch of times and I figure if I was going to have problems with moisture that's when it would happen. I do frequently drive with it running but not at highway speeds. The end of the intake hose I have mounted fairly high up on top of a crossmember so it doesn't get much water spray or snow and when driving there shouldn't be much pressure trying to force through the system. My exhaust faces 90° to my direction of travel to prevent this as well

    If I start my 2kw diesel heater on 3.0 Hz it smokes..... if I start it on 1.0 HZ The pump injects less diesel and I get no smoke . start it up heat it up then turn it up... And you want a good battery for start up for glow plug . minimum voltage drop .. start the truck car or camper motor and you get 14 volts consistent ... Now start the diesel heater wait 3 minutes roughly... Unless you got a fantastic battery Or 2 batterys.. So your glow plug heats up properly.

      I have the exact same issue, which I immediately thought was too much voltage drop. I used a multi-meter and found out I had heaps of vaults. Starting on 1 hz was better but it was inconsistent so what I do is give it a half second blast of throttle body cleaner, upper engine cleaner or something we have in Australia named 'Start Ya Bastard' - yep seriously that is what its called. Works a treat, gets the diesel ignited and away she goes. My unit just seems to overfuel on start up causing flooding, the spray trick causes it to immediately burn.

    One very important thing also are 'the bends', I fitted a new 24v in my wooden shed but would repeatedly flame out so I fitted my other also new 12v heater which did exactly the same thing. In both cases I used the same exhaust set up which had 2 90degree bends and 1 45degree bend (through a stainless steel exhaust bulkhead fitting). Removing the 2 90degree bends solved the problem. Perhaps these heaters might benefit from smooth bore exhaust pipe 🤔

    The tiny air intake hole for the glow-plug is the path for fuel leakage when the heater is operated on its side (the wrong side, with glowplug facing downwards - whereby the blown cabin air will eventually contain diesel fumes) - it's not 'leaky' or faulty, it's why correct positioning is key.

    Cheech and Chong burn mode. This genuinely is hilarious. Do you really have your exhaust pointing up? - Guess what? rain can go in also. Might as well put a funnel on it. 😂😂 Why oh why lol? Terrible idea. The boiling water in the exhaust - tragic. If you didn't use common sense then at least use the instructions. - Exhausts must point or bend downwards with the total bends not exceeding 270° - at least drill a drain hole in exhaust. And btw ALL exhausts condense. So running downward is best for heater health.

    Also, altitude controls attitude. I originally got an altitude chart that didn't match my heater. This caused some cold nights on my most recent trip until I sufficiently leaned it out with the correct settings. now that I'm back and it's still cold, I'll reset to home altitude and run it on warp 9 to clean up whatever mess I created on the inside. Learning curve can be a wicked bitch sometimes.

      much better than getting a heater with a controller that doesn't match the altitude
      I wound up replacing my old one due to bearing failure (now fixed, and hold as a spare) but the controller on the new one couldn't adjust for the altitude and coked up after only a day. swapped controllers, and the new one works fine.
      I set mine to idle slightly lean, no buildup, with a slightly richer mix on high.

  • @pauls466
    @pauls466 Рік тому +1

    It is a good informative video BUT im not gone promote it it on or diesel heater FB groeps . I will explain why . The heaters can run on low all winter long with no issue of soot . The reason why you had soot is that you took cold outside air and that made the heater body not coming up to full temperature ( 180/200c )Next burning of soot by runnig the heater on full for a bit doesn't work as to burn off soot requires a temp of +600 deg c , that would melt the aluminium body. and that myth keeps coming back .But for the rest a great video

    • @peterkingsman
      @peterkingsman  Рік тому +6

      Despite that little bit of seemingly sound theory, you will find you can burn off the soot. The soot insulates the aluminium body and cannot dissipate its heat anywhere near as quickly as the aluminium. Also the soot is generally structured in a way that allows for very effective combustion within itself, creating local heat within the soot. It works. But yes as to your first point, you shouldn't have a sooting problem if the air you are drawing into the heater is warm enough. But I explain this clearly enough in the video.

    Hi, I really enjoyed watching your video but I do have a question.
    On the heaters I have, after about 90 seconds the fuel pump starts and if monitoring from an app, the combustion temperature will rise. After about 4 minutes the glowplug will turn off.
    I have one heater that on many occasions the glow plug icon comes on and the glow plug draws power however the fuel pump never starts. On every occasion I have just powered off the unit, then back on and it has started correctly.
    My question is what tells the fuel pump to start? If it were a timer, I'm sure it would always start. If it is temperature, where does the heat come from apart from the heat of the glowplug?
    On a new heater or a serviced one, there will be no residual fuel in the combustion chamber and only the powered up glowplug, so what starts the combustion process?
    As I stated earlier if it were a timer, I'm sure it would always be a consistent start.
    The other strange thing is there is no error codes. It just sits there with the glow plug powered up for as long as I leave it. Other types of heater would use a pilot light that would operate a thermocouple and that is what starts the main gas valve (In the case of a boiler), but what starts the fuel pump on these heaters?
    Your animation shows the diesel going onto the hot mesh causes combustion, but if the pump is not running, where does the diesel come from?
    Thanks.

It’s so easy to do that I do mine every few months which negates any significant carbon build up in the ignition port. Takes about 2 minutes. I also have a bit of stiff wire with a bend on the end that fits in the fuel supply hole, a quick poke keeps that clear too. Ask me how I know to do this🙄😂

    Never ever mount it outside. That style is better mounted high and have the exhaust always going down ..pass through the floor and out. Have a fan blow across the exhaust and recover more heat. Fuel tank should also be inside (diesel only) run it too hot and open a window to keep the air dry (payment is more fuel burned) if using the unneeded muffler inside, plug the weep hole. And more....

    Hey thanks for your video. It got down to 10 degrees and my heater started blowing white heavy smoke. I watched your video and found out that my combination air intake was outstanding drawing ice cold air. I moved the pipe inlet to get inside air and the smoking completely stopped. Thanks for the great advice. I’m going to connect a 4” pipe to my heater air inlet pipe and connect it to the inside of my house. I think that will help if I supply preheated air instead of the 10 degree outside air. I haven’t seen anyone recommend that. Thanks again.

    How often and for how long do you recommend running it on full blast to prevent coking problems? Let's say it's always running on manual low because the room is well insulated and that's all you need for the temps you find yourself in? I understand that running it always on low will eventually give you coking issues, so how often would you blast it and for how long in this situation?
    I switched to the cheap diesel heater option from a Webasto gas heater, which did nothing but coke up. It was either replace it or check it into rehab.

    If you install a diesel heater to draw in outside air instead of recirculating the air, you’re running the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. This is because the combustion exhaust can get drawn into the cabin air suction duct.

    Poor installation, the exhaust should always be on a downward angle, a carbon restriction will occur and cause heater to carbon up and blow white smoke with incomplete combustion. These are simple devices with associated problems.

  • @aeroglide

    Hi Adam. Thanks for that. Thinking that this vid ticks all the boxes for the problems that literally began two days ago when started on the first really cold day of our winter in Germany, after dismantling and inspecting the combustion chamber , I found it was only lightly coated with soot but that it was wet with unburned fuel. I cleaned it all thoroughly anyway. Glow plug looks good, mesh is seated correctly. After reassembly and restarting, I kept an eye on the screen to check the readings. As white smoke began belching out as before, I noticed that the glow plug symbol went out. I flicked through through the menu pressing "OK" and saw the temperature rise only slowly from 44, 45 thru to 58 degrees C and then stop at 58. White smoke was still belching out so I pressed for "OFF". Shut down process ran as normal. Glow plug symbol came on again briefly. No error code appeared. The sun is shining at 3 pm, outside air temp. (for combustion intake air) is 4 degrees. Any ideas?

      Get a new mesh every 2000 run hours. It's a required maintenance item. You can try cleaning it as he has in this video, but theyre seriously so cheap and you can have a couple handy for later.
      2000 run hours is 24/7 operation for 4 months.
      Or 12 hour operation for 8 months.

    I have lots of soot and smoke with a nearly new gasoline unit. I think it might just be the extreme arctic temperature, I'll try again later in the winter when it's a bit warmer..

    • @richardd8352
      @richardd8352 8 місяців тому +1

      When it's warmer lol. 😂 It's a heater, it's made for arctic conditions Gasoline? Not diesel? If you are in the Arctic or are using the heater where the air for combustion is lower at altitude. You can switch the heater to 'alpine mode' .

    • @edwardmcdermott9948
      @edwardmcdermott9948 4 місяці тому

      How does the gasoline run? What brand of heater? Will premium fuels keep unit carbon free?

    • @ieism1
      @ieism1 4 місяці тому

      @richardd8352 It was minus 35Celcius. As soon as it was back to normal freezing temps the heater worked again. I guess the fuel gets too thick? I'm not at high altitute so I don't think switching to that mode will make it run better, it will just make it run leaner.

      make a hook out of the stainless steel wire of a Chinese food container and stick it in the screen opening at the far end and pull it out. Good to have a few spare screens as they damage easily. I also had a lot of carbon buildup in that hole past the screen and used the same wire to open it up by poking a hole through the carbon.

    the instruction manuel does say your exhaust must be horizontal or bend downwards. It say it should never bend upwards! so water in your exhaust is just due to bad installation...

    Sure enough, the little air port at the glow plug was clogged. The paper gaskets are very delicate. One bounced on the carpet and exploded.
