Why is my diesel heater blowing white smoke?
Why does my diesel heater keep going out or extinguishing itself?
Why is my heater not igniting or struggling to start up?
How to fix smoking diesel heater?
I've rolled up my sleeves to try and make this video the best answer you will find on the internet.

Hey I like the video it's straightforward nice job on the illustration an explanations thank you for empowering people to help themselves, when I say all over that way maybe we'll meet up and I'll buy you a beer I just wanted to verify that my thinking might be correct and your video verify that for me and showed me exactly what's inside that thing, I had some old fuel I use my mistake at any rate I shut it down with the old fuel mix in there and fired it up it wouldn't and yes that's green was probably set it up some pieces came out the next time I have chance for maintenance after this very cold weather I'll take it apart and clean that section, a few chunks of carbon came out after I started the unit and got it to start again there was combustion in the chamber I could hear it it was still remain smoking after I shut it off so I fired it up so there would not be a fire inside the unit too long it was enough to blow heat up into there and restart itself that one critical time we have Sub-Zero temperatures coming I live on a sailboat, this would have been horrible had I not been able to get this machine to run until I have better time to deal with it, after filling the cabin with smoke backwards through exhaust system which let me know that my exhaust has some leaks in it to begin with, many thanks
By far the best diagnosis ever !
My diesel heater is blowing white smoke out the heat tube when it starts in cold. No white smoke out of the exhaust.
This is by far the best video. I am having a issue. It starts up almost goes to or does go full fuel but then shuts down. After 3 starts it runs fine. Now seeing this video I see how critical that small hole is for air to get to the screen for combustion of oil on the screen. (Screen is sort of like a mantel is a gas light) Pressure fed oil burners atomize the oil so it will burn. The diesel heater vaporizes it on the hot screen a very cool process eleminating the high pressure pump and spray nozzel. I am going to try and blow out the fuel feed line to the screen and see what happens. I don't want to take it apart it's to cold. I bet the small hose has dust or dirt build up since the intake air is not filtered other that a screen in the intake.
I know this is an old video but having the exhaust pipe pointing up is no bueno.
Hello I'm a retired Commercial Heating Air Conditioning Tech, of 26 years ,and my associate's degree, from technical college, in heating ventilation air conditioning and low temperature Refrigeration, , When I have something like this small diesel heater that I'm having problems with or cell phone I come on line to you tube especially when there's no technical support on line. Or when a person may be working on something, I want to say from One professional to another that I simply enjoyed your video, I had to go through three other junk videos before I found you, I am simply impressed this video was so well done even your terminology you are very intelligent and you're a fantastic professional, please keep making more videos like this, like you're doing because your video is what people need not all of the other junkie videos that people are just on there just to pretend like they fixed it and put it back together you were informative very educational and I will recommend your videos above all others because I know what I saw was professional thank you so much for being a professional person that people can rely on when they need to get answers , thank you thank you thank you so much for your time it was such a pleasure watching your video
Run kerosene through it once or twice a years on high, it will burn hotter and help clean out all the gummy gunk left behind from the diesel. Also run your heat at a higher temp and open a vent or window it will keep it cleaner.
Gr8 video thx🙂
Can you put some DEF in the fuel ??
Thank you for your time and effort to explain the functionality of this heater, good job 👍
Make sure the heater has sufficient electrical power to it up to 15 v if to little then it will not run properly.
Special tool to insert the screen
Hello Adam. My heater starts and runs fine for a little while, but then it shuts off and white smoke comes out of the cold air intake. I have it installed inside the van with the exhaust pipe running out through a hole in the floor. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Ricky
@everyone wtf do it mean it start smoking out the intake
Well done video Adam! One of the best for learning the operation which is key to being able to diagnose any issues. Bravo!
Thanks for the great tips. Even a cheaper heater can be repaired. Liking and commenting hopefully will keep video up.
Brilliant advice 👌
AA!!
Brilliant!
Music ruins it
A tip for the exhaust - put a water trap in it. This is like the U bend on a sink. Mine is made from a coil of a couple of turns of thin pipe. The water in the trap stops exhaust getting out but water can flow through it. The Exhaust is usually 22mm, the same as Plumbing fittings. I made my exhaust from 22mm copper pipe with compression fittings. It makes for a tidy robust solution.
Thank you. I especially appreciated the animations.
Good video
Mine would not start white smoke, stripped heater found blocked with soot and carbon cleaned it back to factory settings. Now starts ok.
Why do you all ask" If you did find this video useful please hit subscribe button right in the beginning of video?. 😂
You just saved my life this winter!!!
Thanks a lot ! That was best heater vid I've seen in the whole internet ! Keep it UP ADAM!
Thanks for this video very informative and well realised ! 🙏⚓️⛵️
This is probably one of the Best videos i have seen on this smoky problem. Makes total sense to me. Only problem, is after my same Smokey start up and pulling the chamber out, i find it very difficult to successfully clean the gause type mesh inside the chamber itself, which unfortunately is welded in place at time of manufacturing. So after cleaning all accessible parts and replacing the small filter mesh, my heater started right up with No smoke atall. My only solution is to keep a new burn chamber in stock at $27 canadian as a solid back up.
I use mine 5KW to heat a small workshop, with the exhaust going outside a few meters further through the wall and some glass wool to insulate the wall. I take the air intake inside so that I don't have to make another hole in the wall, fresh air is coming in through all small openings that is no problem I think. All worked fine at low power or medium power untill I reached the 100/150 total working hours range of the heater. From then it refused to start, fuel came well in through the tubes, but no more combustion, and no flame. It appeared that the heater was completely clogged with sooth and the unburned fuel sprayed in the chamber did the rest and flooded everything on the inside and outside with fuel. Luckely I placed a complete iron reservoir under it to prevent it from leaking all over the floor. Anybody any experience with how to run it without it getting clogged after approx 100hrs ? What should I do / not do / to prevent it from getting clogged so soon ???? I installed a new one and had the exact same result. Burning was nice and clean visible on the outside
These things are so cheap to buy that there’s nothing wrong with having a brand new or a working unit as a back up this way you’re never down you pull the old one out you put the new one in and you fix the old one and repeat that’s the best way to do it otherwise you may freeze your ass off for days waiting for parts from Amazon
thanks for video. finally I found how to fix it.
165,000 views and a paltry 743 subs??? WTF is wrong with people? This is a very well produced video with accurate and valuable information-it costs literally nothing but 10 seconds to like/subscribe. DO IT!
White smoke equals moisture , turn the exhaust pipe downwards instead of upwards they do produce moisture that leaks out of the muffler.
Really well done!
This video is solid. Very helpful graphics. Notably you revealed one problem that almost neve gets discussed, and that is the depth of the atomizing screen. As mentioned, the screen must be below the air hole. My heater showed an even more subtle symptom. It would start fine when the ambient temp was 70F or above. At temps below 40, it would struggle to light, then extinguish as soon as the heater tried to ramp up. After using my heater heavily for 4 years plus, I have decided that I really should disassemble it every summer for a cleaning and inspection. Nearly every problem I have now is due to neglect. I subscribed and liked just based on the quality of this video.
I just got mine and it won’t start. It keeps blowing up the fuses. Original came with a 25A fuse. I’ve tried 3x 20A, 3x 25A, and 3x 30A fuses they all just sparked and the unit never started from day one. Do you know what’s the issue?
Enlarging the ignition air hole to 1/8 inch eliminated startup smoke once and for all.
Great video! Thanks for putting this out there!
Never ever mount it outside. That style is better mounted high and have the exhaust always going down ..pass through the floor and out. Have a fan blow across the exhaust and recover more heat. Fuel tank should also be inside (diesel only) run it too hot and open a window to keep the air dry (payment is more fuel burned) if using the unneeded muffler inside, plug the weep hole. And more....
Great Video thanks for your time in making such a informative video!
❤ your video 👍 When you buy a new ignition mesh, get one that comes with an insertion tool. It enables replacement to the correct depth without needing to remove any more than the outer cover and the glow plug. It’s so easy to do that I do mine every few months which negates any significant carbon build up in the ignition port. Takes about 2 minutes. I also have a bit of stiff wire with a bend on the end that fits in the fuel supply hole, a quick poke keeps that clear too. Ask me how I know to do this🙄😂
Great video very helpful cheers.
Great video!
Excellent 🇬🇧
That was awesome, and cleared up many questions that I've had,I don't own one yet but I am considering buying one! What brand is best? Are Chinese diesel heaters good ? Also my vehicle runs on petroleum/gasoline is that better or worse than diesel? Thx EDGE
This is the best video I've seen, thank you, carbon foulded an all in one being used as a test in an ice fishing tent to dry clothing during a large event in the rain... Back to running full power to burn out the rest if the carbon
Brilliant just brilliant, very clever guy 🙏
Thanks! This also worked for mine (I was doing all the same things wrong too). But you forgot to mention that EVERYTHING will be black with soot after you complete this cleaning job. Your clothes, your gloves / hands, your tools, your work space. Do this in clothes you no longer want. Over a tarp. With a white garbage bag (so you can see the soot). And have lot of shop rags handy. Don't touch your mom's couch after.
