  • A few people had commented on the amount of FX I used on the mix for the original video ( • Yamaha Portasound PSS-... ), so here is the honest mix, with the raw sounds from the keyboard recorded into Logic and sequenced, with only a small touch of reverb to give some depth (too dry is no fun) and no other external FX used on the mix. (Well, apart from about 2 seconds in the middle where I stuck a high-pass filter on the bass for a bit of variety)

    Yamaha Portasound PSS-190 keyboard (1990)
The PSS190 is a "high-performance electronic keyboard" according to the manual, and certainly packs a lot of sounds into a small package. Many of the voices sound like PCM samples of the FM sounds on the PSS-680/780/480/580 keyboard range, but there are also layered and split voices to play with.
Thanks to Ed Bettella for the loan of this little beast, plucked from obscurity in a loft somewhere.

Thanks. The more recent videos I've done have been much lighter on FX, so I thought I'd give the earlier videos the same treatment.

I had this keyboard as a child and though I wasn’t as good as you play, it brings back so many memories for me! Thanks for sharing. :,)

    Damn.....
    That's some magic right there.
It kinda reminds me of the early computer music of the MS Dos era. First gen sampling.
You knocked this one outta the park! Excellent performance.

Sounds like a cool depeche mode song from around 83

You certainly know how to elevate these cheapkeys to a level of quality most of us would never expect such units could produce.

Thanks. :) I think there are plenty of good, useable sounds in these old keyboards - it's just down to how you use them.

You are making good music with these little keyboard, UA-cam has started showing me past uploads, because I liked one. May I suggest you take them apart first, like Keen on Keys does, clean out all the detritus on the speaker grills for instance, portray these keyboards in the best light. This one, the PSS-190, must be kinda rare, I’ve never seen one....

Thanks :) This one was in a shockingly grubby state, I admit - on loan from someone's attic. Sadly I don't have the same degree of patience that Keen On Keys does for the maintenance side of things... :D

Blind testing one would never believe the sounds coming from a table hooter looking like that. The funny thing is that f. e. that steel drum patch reminds more what comes from my Yamaha 8/16 Op. Organ HX1 having cost as much as cars in the 80s. Anyway your track does not sound worse than YAMAHA HS8, a dream machine (organ with fully programmable TX81Z).

I was pleasantly surprised when I played it! It was borrowed from a friend and really didn't look like much

Hello!! Incredible work with both the edited and raw versions!! I bought this keyboard and I was wondering how you record so well from it. What recording program/computer do you use?

Thanks Madeline. :) I recorded into an iMac via a Focusrite Saffire audio interface (both solid workhorses, but also 10+ years old, so not the latest tech by any means) and into Logic Pro, where I can layer up multiple parts and sequence them. The cable is just an Y splitter cable with one stereo end into the headphone output of the keyboard and the two (left and right) plugs at the other end going into channels 1 and 2 of the audio interface.
