Rich was shilling those Vessi shoes a few months back. What the heck, only about 120 bux so I ordered a pair. Turns out they are sized to fit the feet of skinny Instagram influencers like Leenda. Almost impossible to put on with any lace tension, but squishy laces through tiny cloth eyelets are a pain to adjust. Feel and look good after the 20 minutes it takes to put them on though.

Everything may look like it's thrown together on a whim but don't let the safety sandals fool you he knows exactly what he's doing. Anyways a great watch as usual thanks Rich!
Yeah, I was thinking "oh, hell no that's not going to work." And APPARENTLY he did get it centered. (We don't see the coupling on the inside.)
I guess he learned from the Rat Rod experience. That was the one where the coupling wasn't coaxial, wasn't it?
@@Markle2k Except he has no clutch or anyway to disconnect the motor and input shaft. Bye bye transmission gears trying to street drive a manual transmission car with no flywheel or pressure plate to disconnect the motor and trans.
@@stevenplaskett7728 no need he can program a short power cut to the motor when he wants to shift just like quick shifter on a motorcycle.
To shift you just need to unload the transmission (No torque) either using clutch or turning off the motor for a milisecond or whatever time you take to shift a gear.
@@stevenplaskett7728 You don't change gears while driving. You select the appropriate gearing for the DC motor. The gearbox is simply a complete transaxle for getting the motor to drive the wheels.

Rich talking about cars and my brain just goes "OMG CUTE PUPPY"
I had a 2004 S in Electric Blue..I thought this was it! As far as reliability goes, it never gave me any problems until around 200k. First thing to go was one of the Xenon headlamps which was around $700 to replace. Then it was the interior door releases. I mean, why did the Germans have to go and screw up something as basic as getting out of the damned car?!? When the car started overheating for unknown reasons (actually, it was explained in this vid) I knew it was time to let it go. I loved that car, but it wasn't what I'd call an 'heirloom piece'.

Bro. Make sure align that motor to the transmission. Lovejoy had the specs for the tolerances. I think that's a 8J hard to tell and the specs might be .0013 I use to have them memorized. If you don't do a really good alignment your going to burn the motor up much quicker than expected. Just my 2cents.
technically he could use a LIDAR scanner found on the latest iPads / iPhone12... bring the data into CAD and compare it with so measurements, since he had the backingplate machined anyways... NO WAY you could get that centre-piece aligned within that tolerance by hand :O (by hand I mean not machining it)
He probably took both the motor and the gearbox into the machine shop, and they threw the cardboard stencil in the trash ;)
@@g60force maybe I didn't explain properly. You have to align the motor coupler to the transmission coupler. You absolutely can it's done everyday all over the world in manufacturing. Pumps are driven by dc/ac motors and must be aligned properly to insure proper operation. There are laser kits that are very expensive but you do it by hand. There are shims that you buy and put under each corner of the motor pads.
@@iforce2d machine shops should be able to flatten the motor or transmission mounts but the alignment is extremely important
That hand drawn template was junk. You need to measure the centers of all holes from the center of the shaft. Machinists don't care how big you draw a circle; they just need to know where the center is and the size of each hole.
Not gonna lie the main reason I clicked so first was because Leenda was in the thumbnail.

The expression that makes Rich when she says: it's a DC motor at 5:51 got me!! 😂😂
Dude! This is totally a great, beginner, DIY electric car build. Because of the availability of mini’s and DC motors, is what makes this such a great build series for you. Great job on the content because this has inspired me to build my own.
Rich will never learn not to spoil good sources for parts for himself.
Question for those who have done similar: Can a pizza box template really be accurate enough to be able to get those threaded holes lined up perfectly?
next to the minicooper, a rusty miata frame is gold
Rich gets an Apprentice! Now he can pass off all the dirty work. While he kicks back and relax making bad jokes
the "dirty work" 😏😏
Damn. These builds on a budget, which actually get finished. What is it, wheeler dealers?
Thank you for the free content, sir
'9" vibration isolated love joy connector'. Seriously! Some marketing guy really earned his pay on that one.
Thank you for making a reasonable and attainable build for us financially unfortunate.
If you had a shop able to do this work, then you don't really need an affordable car....unless it is to pay off the shop.
$30,000 shop and 100 to 200 hrs to build a $5000 car with 80 miles of range and top speed of 60ish.....or you could spend 35,000 to 40,000 on a brand new base budget T3, Bolt, Leaf
Don't forget the rear suspension bolts break randomly
The sunroofs and windshield cowls leak
The windshields crack randomly
The transaxles fail....
All that is still on this car.
I'm just reciting the ex BMW mechanic in this video
Recently had my 09 mini S die after suffering the infamous “Death rattle”, was told it was done for and I was super bummed since it’s what I learned to drive in and I’d really hate to see it waste away. Your project is really giving me the motivation to learn and hopefully one day bring it back to life. Keep it up! Can’t wait to see how this turns out :)
How do you plan on shifting gears going down the road, without a clutch? Does the DC motor have an internal brake? Just curious.
He must be planning to just drive in one of the gears all the time... I can't see how shifting is possible unless the cars wheels are not moving...
Shifting isn't actually needed, depending on how much battery power he's using he can probably just start in 3rd gear and leave it there. Even if, for some reason, he does need need to shift, he can hit neutral then move the shifter to the next gear with a slight pressure and it'll fall into place when the syncros line up...basically in the same way that it's possible to drive your standard car without using your clutch after you start moving.
@@Dubweiser49 Cool, what about reverse and like, stopping?
@@pete1973x Reverse you don't shift into unless you're completely stopped, so no issue there. As far as stopping itself, if you're not applying throttle to an electric motor, it will stop spinning as soon as the wheels stop turning (unlike a gas motor that's always running), so you don't need to disengage the motor from the transmission.
I Don’t know anything about this stuff, but if I was to guess I would say that using that controller he got, that cost as much as the whole budget, he will be able to put the motor into some type of free spinning mode and then add force at a rate similar to a clutch, wild guess.
Working for Cummins and seeing all the electrification we're working on - then seeing this video series.. My wheels are turning.

Nice work, couple questions I have to know the answer to, how did you get the motor shaft lined up to the input shaft exactly when fabing the plate and since the gearbox has reverse capabilities already, does that simplify anything with the controller/electronics?
Love the progress: great to see what goes on at the other shops helping to move forward with the project!

Leenda is clever, I didn't know any of those things, well except for the motor. Great vids as usual, very educational
I can't believe that you could cut a part from that rough sketch on the cardboard. What else did you really use?
He didn't. Look at that outline, it's actually a different shape from the gearbox housing. That whole scene was done AFTER the backing plate was already made.
If you looked closely there's also a spacer plate that goes on the motor before the adapter plate, and the bolt holes in the adapter plate are recessed.
