We bought a 2019 Forester with the same engine and after 25,000 miles of a mixture of town, highway and inter-state driving and 2 years ownership, the uneven running of the engine was unacceptable especially at low speeds of 20-35 mph. The nose and tail are a bit of an improvemnet over the other Wilderness models but still dubious. The wheels are way nicer looking. Those wheel arches are... something. That door cladding is heinous though.
The upcoming Mazda CX-50 Hybrid with the Toyota 2.5 Hybrid drivetrain will be beautiful and mechanically top-notch. The only problem will be the price tag.
People being greedy is making every new car look so ugly, they want roomy 2nd row seats, big trunk space, an SUV and want it cheap. Hardly any new car under 40k is that attractive. I guess it takes big money to actually make beautiful looking cars, the SUV form factor seems limiting on creativity based on budgets given. What a boring world we live in.
The looks aren't for everyone, but I still like it. Don't love it, but its what i expected compared to the other Wilderness. I dont like the wheels on this one though, I prefer the flat black wheel from the Forester/Outback Wilderness. Why they didn't use those?

For example, I'd like to have the camera/antenna with the rear view mirror display. Color-wise, Desert Khaki w/o the exterior the gold accents...that look would be amazing.
Great vehicle ... Very comfy and off-road capable but can go only that far. Said good bye to my Outback Wilderness as I found it very limited in function because of the long front and rear overhangs thus limiting it's full capability. Had to miss quite a few good trails during my road trips. Instead of modifying, as I see many doing it, I believe ZR2 (OOB) is a great option and is also comfy on the road. Just traded my wilderness for it.

Two things that comes to mind on the upgrades. Why not have a power seat on the passenger side? Another. What about a power lift gate? This vehicle should only have a full size spare. I zonk the mini spare. We own 3 subies. And it took Subaru 5 years to do something that I had made a suggestion to do. And that is putting in the 2.5. They FINALLY put it in the Impreza. A dollar late. We own 2 imprezas. And they are as slow as a snail. The 2.5 is perfect for this crosstrek. We would like to get this wilderness. But we will wait till after it has been on the road for over at least a year. Maybe Subaru will do something about the power lift gate and the power passenger side seat. Put that full size spare, in this vehicle. Until you do, this is a no sale.
@Robin White plug-in hybrid requires an external power source to charge the battery. I wasn't asking how you will start it. Or do you mean a self charging hybrid?
3500 lb of towing capacity makes it worth it for me to trade my 22 crosstrek Sport for it. It means I wouldn’t have to settle for a stripped down teardrop camper. If it had 250-300 hp it would be the perfect all arounder.
Edit: Subaru doesn’t include a full size spare in most vehicles and it would likely damage the AWD system. Subaru offers one of the few true AWD systems on the market that is always on. In this system all tires should be with within 1/16” of wear and have a circumference of within 4% of each other and all have the same tread pattern. If you put on a full size spare tire, it will likely not meet these requirements and damage the AWD System as it will think something is slipping. This may be why Subaru only includes a temporary spare with a 50 mph top speed. The temporary tire is to get you home and to the tire shop but not for you to drive on for extended periods because all 4 tires should be nearly identical. 😉
@@ArthurChan68 Was about to say the same thing. I didn't know about the 5 tire rotation thing though, but yes, full size spare in the other Wilderness models.

I want he whole thing plastic. No paint.
Yay, no hook like fog light cladding on the front like the regular Crosstrek! No hybrid though. Should we wait for Corolla Cross woodland?
Alex, pls let Subaru know that we want the Brat (a 2-door Forester truck) and the Baja (Ascent truck)
Imagine if the wheels were in the gold accent…
Well, this could have been a lot better. Disappointing.
That’s a mean looking crosstrek. I like it.
Wilderness= more plastic cladding, dark blue paint, two gold spot in bumper!
Where? How so? You talk crazy.
@@RLTtizME what else do you see my friend? Maybe couple of thousands of dollars more?
I'm digging the upgrades. As a '21 Sport Crosstrek owner, I wish there were more options because I would have paid for them. For this generation, I feel Subaru should have offered more. For example, I'd like to have the camera/antenna with the rear view mirror display. Color-wise, Desert Khaki w/o the exterior the gold accents...that look would be amazing.
The skid plates were made in Russia so not exactly a supply chain issue more of a trade embargo.
Funny he sites the bronco sport as having a higher towing capacity. WUT
At this point, why not just cover the whole car in black plastic cladding?
I definitely want one I really like it a lot
Wish they would have added an option for the 2.4L Turbo engine at $35k. But otherwise, awesome car for the price!
I doubt you'll see that soon, if at all. BUT - I think there will be a 50/50 chance that the Forester may see a turbo.
@@eskieman3948Agreed. The Forester will see a turbo long before the Crosstrek. I expect it's likely in the next gen Forester.
I need a yt tutorial on how to remove cladding, it's a hurry, I feel like regurgitating
Does it have the 2.4L Turbo or a manual transmission? No? It’s just an overpriced Impreza.
Chevy?
@@curiosityredpill7030 yes
Hey Alex, do we know if the WILDERNESS will be built in Japan or Indiana?
During the presentation, they said Indiana.
@@arress2052 I had a steering rack go bad from an Impreza built in Indiana. 23k miles I think. Not sure if that’s why it happened, but it did
Can't wait to see a Bronco Sport / Ford Maverick Tremor vs this video.
I think it's the color hue that makes it look childish.
Why does the rear bumper say SUBARU in HUGE letters? 😂
Have you not seen vehicles now a days? They all do that.
No full-size spare?... I'll stick with Forester W.
Too much wilderness badging and too much gold accents. Otherwise a good car for a hiker to get to trailheads.
THE SUBARU PLATES ARE/WERE MADE IN RUSSIA
Biggest competitor will undoubtedly be the Forester Wilderness.
Crosstreks are already in high demand, this premium W model is probably going to have a significant market price adjustment.
REI and Trader Joe’s shoppers are exploding their pants rn looking at the new wilderness Crosstrek
I just can't deal with the plastic cladding. Enough already.
I like the look of this. Its ugly but in a good way.
LOL 😂
Subaru engines are gutless!!
Needs mudguards to keep road/tire spray off the sides.
I really want a Subaru. But I also want a hybrid. Hopefully soon we will be able to get both!
Used to be a crosstrek hybrid
@@tkkcali They refuse to work on them where I live. I would have to drive 3 states over in order to get a crosstrek hybrid even serviced to keep the warranty! :(
@@tophlovr I remember the early crosstrek hybrids came in lime green Liked the color. The tail lights were different too. They had a yellow crosstrek for a while too. II’ve only seen two of them in the wild. They would look bad ass with black after market wheels. I have a 2016 hyper blue with white sparco wheels Looks like the color is back this year
Those gold accents are just too hard to swallow
The cladding is over the top...but doesn't bother me as much as the other cry babies in the comments. Not a deal breaker.
Yawn. Wake me if they return a plug-in hybrid to the lineup.
Where are you going to plug it in when in the wilderness? 😂
@@robertdutka3409 I'll just start the engine like any hybrid.
@Robin White plug-in hybrid requires an external power source to charge the battery. I wasn't asking how you will start it. Or do you mean a self charging hybrid?
@@robertdutka3409 The IC engine also charges the main traction battery. Not desirable. But if needed it can handle the job.
if only a turbo and a manual.. a man can dream....
So you want a WRX Wilderness edition 🤣👍
Maybe wait for the bigger engine coming in a few months
Subaru offers full size spares for the Outback and Forester Wilderness versions. You're supposed to do a 5 tire rotation
@@ArthurChan68 Was about to say the same thing. I didn't know about the 5 tire rotation thing though, but yes, full size spare in the other Wilderness models.
If I may speak frankly...I can't think of anything I could care less about than the type of spare tire used here. In the tens and tens and tens of new cars I have owned...I don't remember EVER using a spare tire. Just big space takers.
@@RLTtizME You must not take your cars offroading then? Wheel damage and punctures are not uncommon. Can't really limp home with a donut if you're miles in the bush with mud and dirt
@@ArthurChan68 ohh interesting. Somehow I doubt that anyone does that properly and it is just asking for trouble. 🙈 I also just had a flat in my 22 Outback XT and my 18” tire would not fit under the cover in the trunk, I had to put it on top. I wonder if the Crosstrek’s is also too small, even for the smaller wilderness tire?
im sorry but Subaru really needs to fix the ui on the infotainment its some of the worst looking in the industry.
I grew about the wheels. Heck, I’d like to see them in the gold color over black.
Great review!
