      I hate the way manufacturers are doing this. I dont like big ugly tablet screens in cars. I prefer knobs switches and the like. Most people do not need a touch screen. I dont have one in my current car and I dont miss it. Cars are becoming overly engineered simply to aim at a sad generation who cannot live without tech and gadgets yet a lot of younger drivers don’t want to drive these days as its not eco friendly.

      It's why we stuck with our '14 FXT. When they offer the FA24DIT (or whatever the current equivalent of the FA20DIT is called) in the Forester, we'll probably have to cave in and finally get a new one even though our UCV (Urban Combat Vehicle) is still running strong with near literally zero downtime (in fact, I'm trying to remember if it's ever been in for anything outside of an alignment).

      I do wonder if part of the reason why it made it up the hill was because of software that controls every aspect of where the power is going to is only possible with an automatic transmission. That said, I wouldn't ever do anything that crazy offroad so I am totally ok with a more "primitive" manual drivetrain. my 18 wrx has driven through some insane blizzards and snow banks and all of it was on oem diffs. having more ground clearance in my city would make a lot of sense. and I just have a soft spot for wagons and hatchbacks

    We have a 2014 Crosstrek, and one thing we've found very frustrating vs. our previous Subaru is that the car wheels do not fit in the trunk. So when we take it in to have the snow tires put on or taken off, they have to put two wheels in the back seat. In our previous Subaru all four wheels fit in the trunk standing up, but the Crosstrek's trunk isn't deep enough for even one wheel to stand up facing front/back.

      @@atticstattic It was an older generation Outback, before Subaru made it larger. When we bought the Crosstrek, the dealer said it was the direct replacement for the older Outback, as the new Outback was much larger. I'd say the front and rear seats are similar, but the trunk is about a third of a foot shorter from the back of the rear seat to the rear door, which makes the wheels/tires not fit. Even if you fold the seats down.

With the CVT we couldn't possibly consider the Wilderness. :( Subaru could sell boatloads of a turbo STI version with manual transmission or at least one with with dual range transfer case and lockers. But honestly, for the price, you're within striking distance of a Tacoma Offroad with the V-6 and manual. I bet it has to do with EPA regulations and gas mileage requirements which are killing off performance vehicles with manual transmissions.

      But turbos suck. And when they go bad whatever vehicle they're on is one slow-moving low compression dying dog. And the extra pressure and heat makes your engine not last long. And when turbos come on and are running they are sucking up the gas! Better to make a better naturally aspirated engine. And when you're trying to off-road that turbos on and if you're not driving like Grandma on the way to church on Sunday the turbos probably coming on and sucking down that gas

    • @ericthomas3181
      @ericthomas3181 Рік тому +1

      @@RRr-yl8zr Personally I'm with you, I prefer NA engines... But the reality is that turbo's only increase fuel usage when they're seriously boosting, an NA engine with equivalent horsepower increases fuel usage all the time... compare EPA estimates for equivalent HP/Torque turbo and NA engines... the turbo wins. The reason you're seeing all these vehicles with smaller engines and turbo's is that they're are getting heavier (safety reg's, tech, etc.) and need to meet tightening fuel economy standards... and manufacturers can't (or it's too expensive) meet these requirements with NA engines. Lastly, If the base engine isn't designed for a turbo, then you're right, they won't last as long... but if the diesel and aviation worlds have taught us anything it's that an engine that's engineered for a turbo (and reliability) can last a very long time (within 10% of a well designed NA)... you just have to take care of them (more frequent fluid changes, etc.).

Car makers don't want to sell these kinds of cars when they can make much more by adding endless bells and whistles.
      This is the same situation as housing: many want a starter home, but builders are unwilling to build starter homes when they can build granite counter-top mansions on the same lot and make more profit.

    The launch delay is the air filter. Swap it for the K&N reusable filter, and no more delay (and some additional power, but lower mileage). This is true on the 2.0, 2.4-turbo, 2.5, and old 2.5 turbo engines. The factory filter is an emissions thing I guess.

But I am very happy with with my Gen2 Crosstrek 6MT despite having the FB20. It feels great to be able to row through the gears and not have robots interfere with the HCU (Human Control Unit). The issue was largely resolved by 2005 with further revision in 2010 I believe though the engine was discontinued after 2012. All models except the STI switched to the FA/FB series engines from 2011-2015 excluding models which came with the EZ36 which was discontinued after 2019.
