They should totally do a wrx wilderness edition. Rally car vibes. Also bring back the manual… the cvt drone is brutal and such a turn off in an otherwise sporty fun vehicle. Had a 2018 wrx… one of the better vehicles I owned.

My 23 WRX is my own attempt at that. 1.5” lift, falken wild peaks on 17s - it’s a go everywhere rig I for my hunting/fishing endeavors while still being incredibly fun to drive compared to the Outback Wilderness I traded in for it. Plus manual ❤

The wilderness crosstrek doesn't need a power lift gate, its just another thing to break, maybe on a more roadie version but no on the one where you might damage it and it'll add cost.

    • @ZeGermanHam
      @ZeGermanHam Рік тому +4

Absolutely agree. The rear hatch on the Crosstrek is extremely easy to open and close. Having it mechanized with electric motors would be a bad thing - just adds complexity and cost.

I own the new Crosstrek in Australia (I'm American, but now live there) and I find it interesting what is different about the Aussie one to the US one. We have a forward camera as standard, along with 360 degrees cameras that can be used while driving and offroading, but we don't get the Wilderness here. I see the camera button is a blank on the Wilderness too, where all models here can activate the cameras there. We also have a few things in the infotainment that are different and such.

I have a 2020 Onyx XT. Absolutey love the car especially the turbo. I haven't had any issues at all driving and it can climb some gnarly mountain trails like a 4runner. Love it all except for one thing, the center console screen is trash. I have taken it in to be factory updated during oil changes and still the screen lags, freezes, and sometimes completely shuts off while driving the car! The only way to fix the issues is to shut off the engine in park and restart the car. As you can imagine, putting your car in park while driving down i25 at 70mph is the wisest thing to do.

Sat in this at the dealership other day. Exact same model. Very comfortable. The lift is great for a taller person like me at 6‘7“. I really wish that Subaru would adopt the center stack and gearshift and cupholders for the outback as there’s much more room and functionality versus the current set up. Great car and I told my partner that it would be fun to have as a sidecar after we pay both of our Ascents.

The point of this vehicle is a cheap, reliable drivetrain that can go off-road. They upgraded the infotainment as that is an important factor to buyers…. But everything else keeps the price low. Only item I do agree however that the car could really use a more powerful engine option.

It’s a fine dirt roader or soft roader, but there should be a distinction between cars like this and vehicles with lockers and low range transfer cases which are basic requirements for doing anything beyond that dirt road. Gunning the crosstrek up that hill to overcome the lack of lockers and low range is also the kind of driving that will likely break suspension parts. One look at the suspension parts and you can see they are not really designed for off road. Nothing against the soft roader category, but it’s not an offroader in any real sense of the word. All the cladding in the world can’t make it so.

I think its a price thing. With the Crosstrek they need to keep it entry level. Adding a hybrid system on top of the off road “goodies” would just bring it to $40k which would be to pricey here. I think Subaru can squeeze out some mpgs here though if they aren’t going to raise the power figures. Getting this to average 30 should have been the goal without should be 35 mpg.

    Beefy?
It's no Rubicon, Raptor, TRD Tacoma/4Runner, or the like.
I really like my Crosstrek, but it's no serious offroader...not even with skidpkates, ATs, a winch, or even uf I added traction diffs and a lift. It might make a decent rally car, if it had a turbo and the 6spd, or even a decent overlander, but it'll never be a decent rockcrawler, driftbuster, or mudbogger. It just can't run big tires well, and the plastic bumpers are vulnerable.

I test drove one of these a few weeks ago. The paddle shifters are a huge mistake. They take up way too much space on the tiny steering wheel. And on top of that, it’s a CVT transmission. Why is there even anything like this? That makes you feel like you’re shifting? It’s a joke.

Put the power seats on all models without having to upgrade to a sunroof. This is b.s., Subaru.
Actually, you can keep the manual seats, but at least make the front of the seats near the thighs adjustable and able to be raised so that tall people aren’t suffering. Why not just make the manual adjustments the same as the power adjustments?

If this crosstrek had a 2.0 liter turbo, hell even a 1.6L turbo engine with over 200 hp, i would have bought it in a heartbeat. Severely underpowered. Now you put your small family of 4 in, going up a pass, you will be getting passed by semi’s.

Good review Sir, thankyou. It would be almost perfect if they offered a manual version of this vehicle. Although, I'd probably be the only person who'd buy it so I get why it's not available. Truly don't get why a "offroad ish" vehicle costing around 35k doesn't come with a full sized spare. Huge miss for Subaru.

I was gonna get this car. Now I’m not sure if it’s worth the price tag. The regular crosstrek seems to be almost as capable. With a lift and some aggressive tires, they might even be on par with the stock wilderness. And the lift and tires probably won’t cost 10k?

A "regular Crosstrek" won't have the shorter final drive ratio and CVT oil cooler, both important to add, along with underbody protection.

Hi Subaru, cladding, orange accents, and un updated powertrains do not make for a rugged vehicle, but irresponsibly makes for someone to think that. Put more power in it, provide drivetrain updates, and then we'll talk. Signed, Anyone who wants to do serious exploration without fear of damage.

Sofia did you forget to turn on the X-mode? Also X-mode Deep turns off the moment your wheel spins over 25. At the end there you were driving with it turned off. Leave it in X-mode 1
They have the Levorge STI in other countries which would be nice if US brought this over.

Great Review! I have owned over 14 Subaru's since 2006. They are very reliable...in the snow as well, but I find the "extra" body cladding on the Crosstrek Wilderness hideous. I will keep my 2022 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk which is more capable off road with a real rear locking diff., V6 and an actual transmission(not a CVT). Cheers!😁
