My surgeon told me to do whatever I want after 6 weeks. So I went skiing the next day. I own a house near a ski resort so i do it very often. Went windsurfing 2 weeks later. These are some of the things I like immensely. I’m 52 and not ready to slow down.

I’m 51 and just had hip resurfacing surgery 2 months ago. It is awesome and will allow you to be as active as you want to be. Many professional athletes have had this done and returned. Patrick Kane, NHL is one of the most recent. Highly recommend for those in their 50’s or younger.

Wow that's pretty restrictive and not evidence based. I fractured my hip as result of cycling accident. I am 64 and super fit. Had a dynamic hip screw now need a hip replacement. My surgeon said no restrictions. Quality of life is what is important. I like his attitude. If you have been active all your life you need to continue to do it. Find a surgeon and physical therapists that support your goals. I intend to squat with bar, deadlift and use freeweights. There are plenty of people out there doing just that.
What you are saying is an opinion not a fact. My understanding is there is no research that backs up what you are saying. Quality of life people !

I appreciate what Gayle Matthews mentioned above. I'm having a left total hip replacement (THR) done in Jan 2022, 6-weeks before my 61st birthday. I'm active, enjoy working out, and have fun with my 13-year old daughter. Purchased a springless trampoline and would love to continue to jump and bounce on it. So I'd like to remain optimistic and believe I can still be active after left THR.
Would love to hear stories of others that were active before THR and remained active after THR.

Even with intense and chronic hip pain and ROM challenges, I maintained an above average level of fitness. I had direct anterior done and my surgeon said that by 6 weeks I’d be able to return mindfully to higher impact activities and by week 9 I would be on track to doing my traditional 54 burpees for my 54th birthday. I am 6.5 weeks postop and am absolutely thrilled with my recovery and the potential to eventually returning to All of my previous physical activities. PS my physical therapist is super nice but at my second follow up, she really had no clue what do do with me anymore because she’s never seen a patient like me before.

I’m 58. Had my THR three months ago. At six weeks I was cleared for all activities. My surgeon simply said do what you feel comfortable doing. I was back at the gym 10 days post op and doing squats again at 6 weeks. What you guys are telling people doesn’t apply to everyone. Active people recover quickly and are able to return to everything. The surgeon also said that the chance of dislocation is very low. I got the hip replacement to become more active not to slow down.

Yes, great, but I was quite active before an accident necessitated a THR, and nine months later I was just standing at the kitchen bench, shifted my weight from one leg to another and my hip dislocated. Incredible pain. I am now very fearful that it will happen again, as no-one knows why...

I just had total left hip replacement (anterior) five days ago. I am only 53, but I had a parachuting accident in the Army which, after 25 years came back to bite me. I had the surgery done at Travis AFB. They came highly recommended by my ortho doc at the VA as well as a PJ I spoke with. The docs at Travis did an outstanding job. I was able to walk the next day with a walker, and now five days later I can almost get half a block in (with a walker). I could do the whole block I believe, but I don't want to deal with the swelling afterwards. Anterior is the way to go. Totally life changing

I had hip replacement surgery about 4 years ago at 52 years old after developing avascular necrosis in my left hip. Prior to the surgery, I had been playing 1/2 court 3 or 3 basketball all of my life and had a regular fairly intense game once a week for about 2 hours. I kept playing after my hip injury, and before my surgery, but I was in intense pain and was dragging my left leg. After the surgery, within 3 weeks, I was back shooting ball and within 6 months was back playing in my weekly game with no pain. I have continued to play since then (4 years) with no pain. I often forget that I have the prosthetic hip. I have noticed some issues within rotation, but that is about it. I also have snow skied on about 5 different occasions since my hip replacement. The rotation issues are more of a problem for me when I am snow skiing. While I recognize that I may be putting myself at risk, these are activities that I love and my life would not be the same without them. Eventually I will be too old for my weekly basketball game , but I intend to continue to play while I can.

My surgeon said no restrictions after 6 weeks. If you were active in the past no reason to stop. The restrictions mentioned in this Video are for someone really old, obese or not in very good shape to begin with. I'm not sure why all these people on this thread think an Anterior surgical approach is better than a mini Posterior, it's not. You may recover a few days faster but essentially they're doing the same operation with more risk of nerve damage. I'm 66, had a mini posterior and was walking unaided in 3 days.

I think if you're tandem and the person you're paired with knows your constraints and is sufficiently experienced to land in a specific way, you will be fine to skydive.

Most all doctors are afraid to give you anything or fear that they might come under scrutiny or otherwise. What a shame.

Not disrespecting what these guys are saying but everyone is different and the best advice I can give to all those on here that are worried about losing their active lifestyle is to talk to your surgeon. Mine asked me what sorts of activities I wanted to be able to do post op and I told him competitive squash, soccer, touch football. He said that he could engineer my hip replacement so I would be able to do all those. The only thing he said he didn't want me doing was a lot of running, particularly marathons, half marathons etc.
I had my right hip replaced just under 6 months ago at age 50. Had posterior approach for surgery and I was walking without crutches or cane 2 hours after surgery and out of hospital at midday the next day after having had surgery late afternoon the day before. The hospital physio even had me doing some lunging exercises before discharge. Lots of walking for the first month and was back out cycling 20km or so at a time and hitting squash balls on a court by myself at 4 weeks (but not playing matches). By 8 weeks could cycle 30 - 40km and play squash matches, though still with some restriction fully lunging onto the right leg. Played a squash tournament about 4 and a half months post op.
I will say that I did a lot of pre-op work, making sure my legs in particular were fit and strong, especially with cycling, to try to speed up recovery.

I was top 24 world ranked WBC Thai boxer, 192cm or 6"3 tall, with 125 fights behind me, and had left posterior hip replace 15 months ago. I doing all my life doing judo and karate since 1974 at 7 years old. So what these guys tell you is for sure good for the average Joe. The next day out of hospital I bought a gamming chair and massive power band and light 10lb weights. I did 1 hour exercise seated per day and for several weeks very cautious not to aggravate the hip. 3 weeks in stationary bike and light seated weights. 5 weeks out I was cycling 40km per day. six months out I was punching the bag 5 days a week 14 rounds. I bandage my hip up on exercise and use ice packs. I dropped weight from 224lbs to 207lbs and that did the trick , lost body fat and muscle (not a lot). Bottom Line::: Do small tests and see how it feels, listen to the surgeon you have and do research. I have tired kicking anything just punching, but at 58 years old its goo enough, for 2 hours per day 7 days a week, Try ice therapy I'm telling you it really work along with drinks of Ginger, turmeric, pineapple and apple cider vinegar. GAME ON!!

I had direct anterior replacement of my left hip 2 years ago. In less than 6 months I was back to running and training in martial arts. No physical therapy was prescribed. My surgeon's biggest concern was that I would progress TOO quickly and end up causing tendonitis in my hip flexors.

I've seen videos of people doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsui after hip replacement but haven't really seen a specific timeline after the surgery. One would think that with the recovery period at 3-4 months, there would be a strengthening period after that but I'm curious, if after 9 months of getting in shape after surgery if I could do BJJ.

The information in sex hasn’t been peer reviewed since the 70s. Asked my surgeon and he said start with standing…. forget that… started lying on my non surgical side then moved to missionary. After 6 weeks my wife was brave enough to get on top with me in my back. Worked out wonderfully. She’s very concerned about hurting me and I’m up for anything.
There’s a chart of recommended positions on the web from one of the bigger hospitals. I used that chart to convince my wife that she could be on top😎

@@RickWilliamscrm Great for you Rick and I'd wait longer too on the jogging. Tissues heal slower at our age and muscles/tendons might be at greater risk for tearing that soon. I am 66 and had posterior approach done in both hips in 2021 6 months apart. I was in outpatient PT for 6 weeks on each and back in the gym as soon as my 90 day restrictions were up on both. Repetitive full impact workouts are not my thing, but I do elliptical and bike for cardio. I'm taking a super slow approach but it's going great!

Same question: is this guidance only up to 3-months after surgery - or is this guidance “forever?” I am 62 and the only physical activities I have done all my life are surfing and dirt bike riding. If I can’t do the only two activities that keep me motivated and happy now, then I guess the alternative is to suck it up, deal with the pain I experience now and don’t do the surgery, but at least now I don’t have catastrophic failures (fracture or dislocation) with my current hip, that’s not so good but apparently better for those activities compared to replacement.

Thanks guys, very useful. Would be good to get an updated overview. The "don'ts" identified are perhaps relevant to someone with other complications such as osteoporosis, much older, etc. But the evidence, and recommendations from most surgeons, are much more liberal and suggest you can get back to very vigorous activities including basketball, tennis, weight training, combat sports (Brazilian jiujitsu) etc. Obviously, individual differences matter, but the materials and techniques have improved vastly, as has the evidence base, and barring very extreme impact, most fit healthy people should be able to get back to close to normal performance after a good period of recovery and strength building after 3 months, and certainly after 6 months. Older posterior approaches were problematic when separating the glute muscle and causing permanent weakness, but even this approach has improved markedly, with better surgeons/muscle sparing.
