- Today I had gotten my Byrna SD Boost adaptor attached and shot some RIOT BALLS out of it. If you don't know what a riot ball is, its a PVC Coated Steel Ball Bearing that will F*$k your day up!!! Come along and watch me shoot my now, BYRNA SD XL in my garage at some 1/4" plywood with a few different rounds!

Just FYI, The adapter does not turn an SD into an SD XL. This is a misconception due to the appearance the adapter gives to the Byrna SD. The SD XL has a longer barrel (19MM barrel extension flush with boost adaptor) that the SD and the HD doesn't have. The adapter doesn't extend the barrel of the SD or HD, it only allows the owner to use 12 gram CO2 instead of 8 gram CO2. Also, I'm still researching rather 10gram is better than 3gram projectiles. Byrna states that the SD/SD XL has an average FPS of 300. Based upon other video's Byrna owners posted with Chrono's, I'm seeing about 280ish with just the 3 gram projectiles. This would equate to about 11J's. However, if we estimate that with the heavier 10 gram projectiles, 200 FPS would equate to 18J's. That's a 7J increase yet at a slower speed and not taking into consideration ball drop which could have an effect on accuracy and joules upon impact. If we can get our Byrna's to shoot projectiles at 220 fps, we would have 22J's easily. 22J's within self defense distance would stop most attackers. Although, I'm sure 11J's would also stop most attackers despite what the naysayer's are saying. Studies have shown that just the presence of any resembling a gun is enough to deter most people from attacking. The small percentage of people that actually drew down on someone having to actually fire their weapon is even smaller percentage. For now, I'm stocking my Byrna with 10 gram projectiles because I don't use chemical deployment. I was looking at the new aluminum riot balls 7.5 grams, but again, my calculation state that if the Byrna shoots them at 220 fps, your only getting 17J's, 1 less joule than the 10 gram. I'll post this to the Byrna owner's group, perhaps someone will make a video with a SD XL chrono to dispel my estimates.
Did you ever get results on your hypothesis? Im carrying 10g riot balls in my SD and was wondering what the numbers were in terms of Js and FPS with a 8g Co2 cartridge.
i bought the SD,,and its big as is,,i really dont want to make it any bigger,,but make sure you have a lot of co2 carts,,,
I think the usual kind of ballistic penetration tests don't show as much of what you want to see for the Byrna's function. In terms of deterring a target non-lethally, total energy may be much more important than penetration. Penetration is usually a product of speed. 5.7 rounds will penetrate armor that a 45 ACP won't, but the 45 ACP does more damage in soft targets, generally. For the Byrna, other than testing on live targets I'm not sure how to measure deterrence.
The nylon and steel exert the same amount of force...with the upgrade, the nylon is traveling around 311 fps: the heavier steel is moving about 211 fps. The precise amount of identical energy is applied from both rounds when shot from a constant source. The nylon is every bit as hard as steel. A kneecap, belly, or groin shot would drop anyone. A head or neck shot is game over.

With future test shots, could you Brace your target into position? The initial rounds shifted the board, so the impact was softened.
Where you getting you .68 cal Riot Rounds from as I would like to maybe get some of those!
HomeWreker projectile a good alternative.
Could be the added weight of the steel , slower FPS speed . But would not want to get hit by either, well compared to a bullet!
Interesting video I liked seeing the results 4 grams is as hi as I would go if your looking to pernitrate I tried 8 gram Grimburgs once same thing 10 or 8 too heavy it slows them down

How you painted your sights, they look so great, probably in the night are super sharp.
I was going to buy illuminated site paint but ended up using my fiancés fluorescent nail polish. Don’t use the brush though. Use either a toothpick or one of ur girls nail pairing tools they use for making dots on the nails. Works great!

once you put the co2 tank in, how long time can it hold the pressure?
I’m not too sure. I did two tests in my own. Put a co2 in and punctured it and waited 8 hrs and it still fired the same amount of shots at roughly the same velocity. I did the same thing over night and it leaked most out. So a few hrs should be fine but anything longer than 8 hrs it seems to leak at that point.
While I do see a use for these is certain situations. I think having a firearm in conjunction with this is the best idea. Just in case it turns out deadly force is needed. That's what my Glock 22 is for. 😉

So the Byrna SD XL has a longer barrel? i did not know that so if i convert the SD to XL it wont have longer barrel right?
The “XL” is basically just a clip on/bolt on attachment for the end of the barrel of the sd. You can buy that separate or u can buy the sd xl with the xl attachment already installed on the sd for you too. Thats all it really is. Hope that helps.

You know this is expensive but it hits harder than the unmarex t50 plus the trigger is better plus you can drop and load again.
First round didn't go through because the Co2 wasn't charged. If it's a new Co2 the first one is the weakest. That's what I learned from watching other reviews.
co2 canister was punctured first before all shots. the 1/4 subfloor has a very compressed unforgiving characteristic..lol

Is the boost just bigger cartridge?
allows you to shoot 12 gram carts instead of the 8gram carts. and also increases about 6fps. with the 8 gram carts I can notice the launcher top off after 1 1/2 clips. with the 12 gram I can shoot 5 clips before I notice a decrease in accuracy and power. def worth the upgrade!
I don't see how the boost adaptor makes a difference. It looks the same as the one it came with 🤷♂️

Plywood is on an angle , not straight up , makes a difference !!
that was purposely done so it wouldn't ricochet back at me since I was in my garage.lol. that plywood is actually sub flooring which has a stronger characteristic. I can blow holes through plywood all day with this.

The 12 gram adaptor looks exactly the same as the one it came with. How is it any different in power increase?
Not following your question.. the 12g adapter is the black piece on the end of the barrel of the launcher. It extends the co2 from stock 8gram to the 12g carts
The adaptor was added to his standard SD launcher. This was not a factory SDXL. The SDXL/LE launchers used the same boost adapters as one can buy to add to EP/SD launchers. SDXL/LE true difference is there is a 19 mm barrel extension added to those models and the LE has 33 percent more fps due to a new valve assembly.

Someone needs to do a video explaining how to increase the velocity via the screw on the back of the Byrna. I turned mine all the way up and and shot only kinetic rounds and that thing is no joke. (KEEP IN MIND IF YOU ADJUST THE FACTORY SET SCREW, YOU WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY)

You should try it with some steel or aluminum balls
unfortunately from everything I've read, it will damage the launcher...the white kinetic rounds I used in this were steel ball bearings wrapped in a nylon coating weighing 10grams.

How interesting, when I search about different projectiles from Byrna website they say that non Byrna projectile rounds are not made for Byrna gun which seems you prove that the riot rounds from whatever brand you got it from shows that it can be used on Byrna gun itself, but I guess it depends on the rounds size itself which one showed about paintball rounds aren't made for Byrna but didn't bother show non Byrna projectile rounds that can be used on Byrna gun
shooting non byrna rounds can void your warranty if something happens.. that's why they don't recommend. and their rounds are more $. lol

The 1st shot from my orange HDXL with safety on seems stronger with new co2. I could be wrong. I like the tan and black.
The Byrna projectiles are well designed in my opinion. My indoor range is well used. This Launcher if giving the chance will make them regret. #byrna

the boost adaptor is 49 but the launcher range from 349 to 499
Go to their website and buy the bundle deals. Save some money. I still think they are a bit over priced but you also won't be disappointed.
The Byrna is to underpowered to shoot a 10gram riot ball. That’s why the 3gram nylons are better with it. You need an FSC or a modified m17 for the 10grams
Very True, Byrna is good as a quick draw and shoot, if one is able to have A Byrna and a backup pepperball/FirstStrike fsc/tcp as a second pisol in a waistbag. Byrna in a kydex holster and fsc/tcp in your bag as a backup.
I believe the Mission 4 Rifle is good for the riot balls cuz it uses 88gram CO2 tank. I have the pistol and the TCR, just waiting for the Mission 4 to arrive
@@jedizelfknight Also invest in a hpa and Co2 paintball cylinder for the mission...the 88g are expensive and can only be used once it is punctured, then the whole 88 g has to ne used the same day. HPA with a handpump is more expendive upfront , but cheaper in the long run. Hope you enjoy the Mission 4.
@@swamivandermerwe the 88gram tank for the Mission 4 Rifle can be used a lot because they have a special function on the rifle where you can cut off the CO2 if you're not using it. It's in the Byrna commercial video on the Mission 4

literally got my Byrna yesterday and I really like it no cap. it just kills me that if u kill in self defense especially with a legal gun plus a conceal carry permit u can still face 20+ years

Everything is investigated when it comes to that. It's standard procedure. That includes law enforcement shootings. This gives prohibitive possessors in most States and option for self-defense. Also, some people just don't want to use a firearm however most of these are capable of killing somebody at close range if a person is shot in the head. If somebody comes into your home unlawfully and you stab them with a screwdriver this will be investigated. Stay safe.

Never had one jam in the sd and Shot well over 1000 clips thru it. I think it was the hd that had the issues b4 the redesign.

E = (1/2)mv^2. In other words, speed is more important than weight.
in a circular projectile, weight is the only thing making it effective because of its energy distribution. thats why a steel core round will crack your skull and a byrna 3g kinetic wont. which one would you want to defend your life with?
The first shot from the BYRNA is always the weakest from my testing.
you lose ~15fp with the pull-pierce technology. you can pre-puncture the co2 pulling the trigger on safety though.
All CO2 guns do that

If not, seems like an obvious marketable device!

it got perfect amount of non-lethal stoping power, i have seen the welts they left on some dudes, and the pepper rounds are insane
