Caught a Bobcat Stalking My Ducks and Me

- So I was outside doing my duck chores when I spotted a bobcat stalking my ducks and me. I need to add a new electric fence to deal with this increased predator pressure.

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.
you need to cut the tall grass around the fence and the Bobcat will loose it's hiding places
bob gonzalez was just going to suggest this!! This is probably the easiest immediate fix he could do. I do think he ought to look into a livestock guardian dog as well...this would probably be the best time for it, seeing as he’s coming into winter & usually this traditionally means things slow down a bit and most farmers have a little time on their hands for training. It’s a very big time commitment, so I get why he hasn’t, but it’s pretty clear the time is rapidly approaching that it’s going to be a must. 😬
Good advice!!!
@@Caninecancersucksrocks a dog wont stop a bobcat, that thing will fuck up a dog. A bobcat can kill a person, their claws are razor blades.
I agree, these cats feel naked without a place to hide
@@jaridkeen123 Jarid, you're thinking of a cougar. A bobcat would never kill a person, nor a guard dog.
Might want to cut grass around area so they can't sneak in under the cover of the brush. Also remember to get all grass off the fences.
He is classic novice "farmer" . you don't throw meat carcass , invite wild animals/predators then expect them to go away ! They will stay till they get the last one of the animals/ducks they can eat.
Only option is get 2 dogs. Feed the animal carcass (cooked ) to them as reward .
What are you on about. The last stuff he put out was eaten entirely by vultures. Not a scrap left for any actual predators. He lives surrounded by woods. The sound and smell of the birds alone lets predators in the area know they are there. It’s getting cold and they are gearing up for winter which drives them to extremes like going out from the cover of the woods into an open field occupied by humans. It’s normal. Has absolutely nothing to do with him putting some guts at the end of his field or him being a novice farmer. 🙄
@@amechelb you probably did not see the video of predators eating the scrap at night.
@dave lawson I did it was from a year before that and they were I believe raccoons and coyotes both of which he hasn’t even had attacks from on his homestead. So ya point still stands. Most homesteaders will throw dead stuff out into the woods. It’s not going to increase predation doing it once in a blue moon. After all much larger amounts of meat are found naturally in the woods when things like deer die naturally. Predators know that already dead animals stents something to note as special places to come back to. It’s not like animals just keep dropping dead in the same place over and over. I would think this would be common sense.
Definitely need to get a dog before it gets worse
2 dogs
3 dogs
An army of dogs.
Ethelenum M. farm dogs. not for meat or business, just for dogs
@@aaronmas-griffin8594 2 would be enough for a start, just get a male and female. Unless if he gets pups then i guess 3 would be ok.
Damn that's a bold cat! It didn't even seem that concerned about being spotted. You could almost see the thought, "Oh well, I'll try again later." going through its head.
The lure of soft defenseless fowl loudly walking around is just too much for them
@@IowaKim Precisely, that Bobcat probably took the other duck guranteed.
She's well fed. Cats are horrible.
It seems it would help the ducks in the morning if you put some slip resistant surface on their plank when they walk down. They look like they are slipping and sliding.
small oak half round molding 'tween the struts he has now would work fine if he is so incline.
you need to get guard dog soon
Fidget Tapir its a bad time since it needs to be raised with the livestock it is protecting. It needs to think they are its family even more than it thinks people are.
@@SusanPDavis is it raising ducks?
Have you heard the bobcat scream - blood curdling! First time I ever heard it I thought we had a mountain lion for sure but a little research online listening to lynx, bobcat and mt. lion - def. the bobcat! Amazed me that such a small cat could sound so ferocious! Good luck - we've always had dogs and they keep most critters away.
The video was uploaded 55 seconds ago and I'm already here 👍
20 minutes ago and I'm here too, glad to see new video is available :D
PLEASE VIDEO EVERY 2 days please atleast i cant cure my addiction. i want to raise ducks too
Your cats are in danger as much as the ducks.
more actually, the cats tend to hang around alone and in the exact same sort of places a bobcat would go
Anthony Harding That’s part of the problem. If the cats like to hang out where the bobcats hang out, the chances of them encountering each other skyrocket.
Cats are not in danger like the Ducks or geese - plus cats can defend themselfs. against most predators.
Yup. This is why you often have to replace barn cats.
@@TM-ry6hc Most Farm Cats are killed in the road as road kill, that's why you have to replace them, very rare by any predators.
When you yell "release the quacken!", it always makes me smile. Thank you for that.
If the Fence doesn't work
The Geese is another line of defense
geese are feisty
Geese are not effective deterrence for a large predator such as a bobcat.
Terri Gerth agreed, there a bobcats out there that can tangle with a good sized dog. Kill the old cat, hes never going to forget where all that dinner was.
@@gardnmama he should get a donkey
Get 2 Canadian geese
Love watching the geese stretch their wings when they get up. Also like the way they tuck their bills into their wing to sleep. Looks so comfortable yet uncomfortable at the same time. The final shot is so restful, makes me want to take a nap...
I just stumbled upon this channel a few weeks ago and i fell in love! Your so charming amd fun to watch, and the quality of these videos is absolutely incredible! Cant wait to see more from you
Samage 😀
Not sure if it’s bobcats or cougars but one of them can jump a bus. Electric fence might not be a sufficient deterrent if true.
That's cougar you're talking about there, I don't think there are cougars where he lives
Pretty sure thats cougars
18 feet vertical.. From a standstill... Thats freaking amazing.. I had no idea :)
A quick Google says bobcats can jump 6'. That's no 6' fence.
Maybe land mines ??? ;-)
You're definitely in need in of guard farm dogs. I'm afraid your cats are going to get snatched too. The electrified fence is good, but can't predators jump the fence? I heard coyotes do
Yes, coyotes can jump pretty impressive night never mind foxes and bobcats who can jump over 6ft those fences won't stop them. You are in desprate need of a livestock guardian dog not just for your livestock but your cats too. I've seen a video of a fox jumping over a fence and grabbing a cat out of somone yard.
Build a moat then double fence it, fil lthe moat with water and they wont dig into water. A good life hack and you get a double fence for protection. They can jump over the fence, but it's unlikely they will try to jump a double fence.
Looking back it seems your advice was taken.
I really enjoy learning about all your animals as I watch you interact with them. Thank you for posting your experiences.
SUGGESTION: If you are going to test an electric fence with your hand, be sure to use the back of your hand as the current will make your hand jerk away from the wire. The way you touched it with the inside of your finger can make you close your hand around the wire.
I only found your. Channel the other day and have been binge-watching since!
Enjoying the morning sunshine while chopping peanuts for cookies, and I’m watching your fascinating videos. Best to you both with your farm.
I appreciate all this content. You and Alison both have jobs AND take care of the garden and farm, plus maintaining the land and house, PLUS making videos and updating regularly on social media, and most importantly taking care of these animals. I wish I lived closer so that I could support your farm, but I do plan on buying some merch! Keep doing what you do, you've got a fan down here in South TX!
Hi Morgan, great vids, I know it's probably superfluous but have you thought about your duck ramp at the new duck house ? Watching your vid I noticed how difficult it is for the ducks to climb up and walk down due to the cross slats and smooth surface - have you thought about covering the ramp with a coarse surface roof felt to give the ducks better traction ?
The ENTIRE video was about dealing with predators on your farm. Not a 5-minute lead-up to a 30-second mention, like most vloggers. I like you. Subscribed! 👍
Darn it! So tough when the predators are desperate for food. We had a terrible year last year because there was clear-cutting nearby. The electric fence is great!
From one Vermonter to another, I gotta say you make great content! Love watching your videos in the morning before I start the day. Really makes me want to have a small animal farm when I get land one day. Keep up the awesome videos!
I once hit my head on a beam in a low shared bicycle shed, which really hurt, so I took some old foam roll used to cover ground for sleeping bags, cut a piece to size and stapled it to the beam. Even if I hit my head on it, it doesn't really hurt now.
Just put a helmet on when you enter...
Yeah, instead of stapling foam maybe use a helmet? But good advice otherwise 😄
Love it when you get footage of sneaky things!! Thanks! &... best Quacken release so far... they're really getting the hang of that ramp now, yippeee! =)
Lawnmower time, no cover means predators will have a harder time sneaking up
Yikes on the bobcat! Hoping the fence will do the trick. We've had cougars come into our urban neighborhood nearly every year for the past 5 years. It's unnerving. I can imagine how heartstopping that must have been. Lived the drawings of your farm and that book...what a great gift that was. Gifts from personal libraries are wonderful to get, especially when they have such great info in them. I hope you share some of those recipes.
Sweet that you got a bobcat on film. They are quite rare around here. ~Heather
Great to see your videos! I was raised on a very small "dirt" farm in Central New York State.
You can get a piece of grass and touch the electric fence with it to check if it's working
I would build an electric fence near the woods like you did and turn it on at night.
Predators hunt at different times and there’s apps that track their activity, pretty cool. So the electric fence has to be on 100% of the time. I’ve lost chickens and geese at all times of the day 😭
Those electric fence kits hurt like hell. Back in 1973 I got shocked by one and will never forget it --neither will the bobcat.
*waves* I'm having a small-world moment watching one of your other videos and realizing you and I grew up about 20 minutes apart! Keep doing what you're doing!
Really? Where?

@@silvercat18 OK then
Your cat is funny. I can almost see the thought process in his brain.
only his friends call him Bob. For everybody else he prefers Robert.
Cutting the grass would make a huge difference, I keep the long grass down and trim the bottoms of the trees. 🌴🌾 the electric line is awesome ;)
Not that you asked (snort)
Love your videos. Good luck with your predator problem.
Keep your eyes peeled. Our friend in N.H. lost several meat birds to a bobcat that jumped over the electric fence like it wasn't even there. Our predator issue now is bald eagles. We've had foxes, owls, coyotes and mink too. The struggle is real for sure!
Spotted a bobcat next to my driveway/house once. Same month my barn cat, Tiger, showed up with a huge gash down the center of her back. Still have Tiger.
Morgan, Best thing to do is to cut down all the high vegetation around the yard. It provides the cover for the predators to get close. Get someone to bush hog the entire barn yard. The electric fencing will not be much help in deep snow, unless you shovel it away from the fencing. I had to snow blow a path on both sides of my fencing up in AK. it was a daily chore all winter.
Remember that bob cats can jump easily 6ft to 9ft (dependant on size) to clearance obstacle so your best option is to clear some of the brush to see them coming and erect a secondary perimeter fence as precaution, by the looks of it this one has decided to make home in your patch because of the fresh game, so he will be back
00 buck 12guage
They will chew through that easily.
Lost two cats to coyotes.
Bob cats can leap over that if they find the right angles.
When they become a pest you gotta do what you gotta do
@frigidkiller123456 ,
Pests , like Bobcats also kill moles and voles that can damage your fields and pastures , and they also kill mice and rats that get into your feed. Rats can also kill your chickens and ducks and especially the young ones.
Are you really sure that you want to kill the Bobcat ? So that you can become the mole and rodent hunter ?
Bobcats killing human beings ? Hmmmpf ! Maybe an unattended
infant left outside over night ??
That's why you have normal cats, dogs can deter those other pests too, I'm not entirely sure but once the bobcat knows it can get easy food, it'll probably keep coming back, that's when it becomes a problem. So if he doesn't get a dog, only choice is to get rid of it.
@Officer Pulaski So a farmer shouldn't shoot predators threatening their livelihood because some European suburbanite will think Americans shoot everything?
Honestly, what's your line of reasoning here?
The Attenborough bit 😂😂😂😂 ❤️❤️❤️
Your vlogs are wonderful to watch peaceful interesting funny beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Although Your predators are very worrisome.
It's that time of year, the predators are getting ready for winter too. I just saw a fisher cat on one of my game cams!
Fence, moat and then another fence. Double fenced with moat which (usually) stops them from burrowing under it since they wont into a moat and they usually won't jump two fences. Cut all the grass around the fence so they don't have a hiding spot.

I think it was Sasquatch!!
0:48 Jemamah was so much happier with that ramp.
That bob cat seems pretty comfortable. I dunno if one dog would be enough - perhaps a great Pyrenees, they're fiercely protective and one of the smartest working dogs around .. I seen donkey in the comments, great idea - maybe a horse. Good luck ! Love the videos !
This is the most underrated channel I’ve seen
Morgan, I think it's past time for that guard dog!
Soooo Sweet They Are !!! ❤️🌻❤️
Yeah that wire fence you put up is very simple. I recommend you put some tensioners on the fence, too. That way if it gets looser than it should be, you can tighten it up. And the electricity the new fence line puts out is pretty nerve wracking. I have those wires on my own property and I’ve grown up with them.
You are a very blessed man👍
2 Pyrenees and 3 terriers. All outside only dogs. Terriers are on the job 29 hrs a day, and the Pyrenees are the muscle.
Or one LGD and lots of electric fencing. Lol would a guardian llama work ?
I love your humour, and your references, and your editing. Great content, great energy, great channel. ❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦☕️☕️👍
Wonder if thats what got your other duck in broad daylight 🤔 , that's to freaking close for comfort...I'd agree with getting some type of guardian dog ( maybe two ) ...try adding a few smaller wood slats on the duck ramp to help them with getting up and down , ducks are not very graceful and need all the help they can get 😂😉
Great video..be careful and stay safe out there
Hey there! This is not really related to this particular video, but instead of dumping your duck pools on the regular ground, you could use that water to water your trees. I know it has made my plants grow literally overnight. Works great!
we're all looking forward to a doggy joining the farm, it seems almost inevitable at this point. Would you be getting a puppy so they can grow up with the birds and if so is that a reason to wait, maybe for winter to pass?
Wow a bob cat, trim grass near to fences hopefully take away it’s hiding places. Great job with the fence.
Pupusklier? New to me 🤷🏻♀️ . Our chickens have stoped laying , those boogers !
We have a bobcat we see once in a while. I call the wildlife guy and they appreciate knowing where they are. Other people call too and he's able to predict where the bobcat is going and when he'll get there.
I hope you and your animals stay safe❤️
A trick I use to test electric fences is to touch the wires with a long strand of grass: you will feel a little shock in your fingers but it's much much weaker than touching the wire itself, and you don't have to carry around the tester
I feel your pain. Predator pressure was one of the primary reasons after 5 years of being a chicken farmer that I left the business altogether. The problem is, as one Midwestern farmer I knew put it , is that we no longer have trappers to keep control of these animals . Also if you want to keep your Ducks laying throughout the winter try putting some light on in the duck house. They need at least 16 hours of light a day to keep laying eggs . Good luck.
How about a low wire to keep the critters from even trying the fence?
Great video. Hope the electric fence keeps that big kitty away.
That’s why you need a tractor and mower to keep the property cleared . It will also help keep you land in good shape and now require clearing later
blame the builder for the low roof maybe put a stop on the cheque
Great fence upgrade for protection. Hope it helps.
Omg, that scared me for your animals ( I call mine my babies, 3 dogs(2 are puppies 6 months apart) 1 19 year old cat.) I'm so worried ty for putting up the electrified wire. I don't want anymore being a meal for a bobcat or any other wild creature. Morgan, ty for sharing with all of us out here. I live in California outside of Sac. and not a farm. I kinda want to retire and have some chickens and ducks on my property. Your so blessed, enjoy it.
Well, I think you are going to have to upgrade your security guards. I mean the cats are great, a bobcat and a coyote and a bear? Yikes! Kitty won't fare too well against that lot.
Did you know that ducks and geese can sleep with one eye open? I never knew that until Matt at 50 Ducks in a Hot Tub told us. I like watching the ducks and geese on the lake down the road from us. My spouse thinks I'm weird. Oh well, I think he's weird for watching TV all the time. Guess we're even.
Thanks for sharing your ups and downs. Stay warm!
The purpose of life is to enjoy and experience it. We can experience it directly as you do, going outside and living in the moment with the astounding natural world. People inside watching TV experience it vicariously through other people's direct experience, however it depends on what programs we are watching. Many programs are simply to fill time while we wait to die.
@@joea1433 That's .. actually really deep. I'll save this post and come back here, probably. Well wishes to both of you! :)

Good morning! 🇨🇦
I know you are in VT but I'm in TX & we had a mountain lion watching me doing chores at 2:30pm. Freaked me out that I had been out there for an hour not knowing it was within 50 ft of me

I hope all your critters stay safe.
Time for introducing duck/goose/cat-friendly dogs and have them scout the area!
He is gorgeous
I GOT CHILLS from that bobcat footage omfg
its just a cat tho
I would still recommend a Great Pyrenees. They're big, gentle giants but fiercely protective of herds and humans.
You really need a guard dog to protect your cats and ducks
Apparently the "if you build it, they will come" quote is legit for most things. Build a farm and the predators will come. I wonder if solar motion lights out there might help any.
Get a barn T-Rex. Those things are way better than barn cats for deterring predators.
No he should get a guardian spinosaurus. I’ve heard they can bond to ducks and geese, and they can even swim with the water fowl too!
cherry_skiies * wow! That actually sounds like a good idea!
god i love this channel
Geeze, that was a big bobcat , and sitting right there! Will you be putting up some trail cams to catch him at the duck and geese houses?
*"It's a nice message and something that you should keep in mind."*
That kindness starts in Vermont..?
I'm not sure how I'm supposed to take it...
Bobcats are great to have around! They really take care of the rodents. But you do have to make sure the fowl are in protected enclosures. We have a resident bobcat that likes to spray the mailbox post each morning on his morning rounds. The bobcat is definitely interested in the birds. But you're far too big to be a consideration for stalking. You'll notice he gave you plenty of space and moved away promptly.
One thing I don’t miss about raising chickens in a very rural area is the knowledge that everything wants to kill them. You can do everything right and it can still go very wrong.
If you have any questions about electric fencing let me know. Also that bobcat isn't likely to climb the fence so much as jump it entirely. For coyotes and other predators I've found that leaving a radio on near the animals tuned to VPR or other channel with more talking than music helps keep them from coming too close. ~David E.
He was like "Shit! I need to lvl up my 'Stealth' "
My ducks and I, come'on man lol
If you were able to borrow Frosty for a few days, he might be able to educate your bobcat buddy!
Yep. Stalker. Any farmers raising livestock guardian dogs near you? Edit: Pablo is a very patient cat lol. And why no wire near the ground?
Beautiful animals! But they can really do damage! Hope your fence works!
Wow, I never would have seen it if you hadn't circled it and zoomed in!
You need to carry bro’!
Depending on what state you’re in you can hold out till bobcat season or just live trap it
