I like the nail polish idea :) We use a lot of Sally Hanson Hard as Nails clear nail polish when fly tying (varnishing heads on nymphs etc), and we used to put it on the matches as well just in case we dropped them in the river. The nail polish is a new one to me. If you wrap the match stick in tissue paper or cotton and dip the whole thing in wax you can greatly increase your burn time.
