The crazy things about the visuals is that sometimes I feel like I'm not exactly hallucinating but more like seeing things with more clarity. Mushrooms told me a story that they were once like us, humanoid. They advanced their technology to a point to where they could coil the entire evolution of their species into an organic container we call a "spore". They did this by decoding their own DNA. Now their technology, being as advanced as it was, couldn't save their planet from the inevitable dying of their sun. So this species decided to seed the Universe with the spores of their race. Spores which are capable of surviving the harshness of space, land on barren planets (or not barren) evolve to the environment (or evolve the environment around them) and begin the long evolutionary process of becoming conscious humanoid entities again.

It could’ve be that when our ancestors encountered these mushrooms they actually have catapulted us forward as a species the same way the fungus rerouted the Japanese subway system the fungus rerouted the brain and the way of thinking for generations to come leading to scientific advances of unimaginable creations as well as society itself.
Mushrooms evolving into a separate species that eats its predecessor and experiences deeper connection to cosmic wisdom. Seemingly divided entities considering themselves as separate until consumption inspires sensual communion. The mycelium network is happening at the level of species. A microcosm of the universe at large. A wonderful example that everything is connected.
What's more, it's a fractal. The systems that hosts us, the universe, is a branch of a bigger system, that is in itself a branch of a bigger system, that goes on and on. We as a individual system hold an infinite amount of system inside us.

Psychedelic’s definitely have potential to deal with mental health symptoms like anxiety and depression, I would like to try them again again but it’s just so hard to source out of there.
A lot of people have testified about this and I really want to give it a shot. I put so much on my plate and it definitely affects my stress and anxiety levels
Do you eat pork? Pigs are pretty smart and apparently taste similar to human. That's much closer to cannibalism than eating fungus. But maybe you're already a veggie or vegan. I'm not. I love bacon especially. I do feel slightly bad about eating it but it's too good. And I can't imagine not eating meat at all. Are there any people who don't eat mammals but eat other meat, well I know there are people that only eat fish (weirdos), but I'm thinking someone who eats chicken and turkey and maybe even alligator, but not mammals. That would make some level of sense to me. But it's not something I've ever heard of.
In the way that the slime mold was able to optimize itself, it seems pretty similar to neuroplasticity and the way that we can rewire our brains. Our brains are like really complex mushrooms.
As much as I like how Paul tries to think out of the box, there are a lot of misconceptions or wrong statements going on here. I just name two: 1. Finding an optimum distribution tree is not "intelligence", it is just an optimizer mechanism. Intelligence is a deduction based on knowledge and the ability to develop skills. Almost anything that happens around you is an optimizer, e.g. trajectory of a falling ball that is optimum in the sense of a minimum energy path in the space-time curvature. In the video, it shows several examples of how an exploring fungus discovers the best routing system for different maps. This is the exact same mechanism that generates lightning patterns. It is called RRT in computer science, or Rapidly-exploring Random Trees. Google it if you want to know how it works. And if anyone is interested there is a whole class of Minimum Spanning Trees that just do what we see the fungus do in this video: maximizing the distribution of a source through a tree with minimum total length. Examples are veins in our body, nutrition pathways in a fly's wing, or even how rivers join to make their way to the sea (the same class with opposite optimality condition). Nothing intelligent about these phenomena (although very beautiful), just consequences of the laws of physics with no higher order complex thinking system. Using the term intelligent confuses people into thinking what we mean by that is the same intelligent process we experience in our the brain. This is wrong and sloppy science! 2. There is a fundamental difference in the decentralized intelligence, and the centralized one. We, as humans, have both: our brains (central) + our social communication system (decentral). Many colonies of animals and insects demonstrate decentralized intelligence without having much advanced neural systems, like a flock of birds acting as a whole, or ant colonies capable of building really complicated underground constructs. What is wrong with Paul's assumption on making allies with fungi lies in the fact that a centralized intelligence cannot communicate with a decentralized one in a way that is meaningful to both parties. We can "exploit" them, but not make friends, or allies, or whatever he means by us and them in the same framework. Proper communication is key to extending intelligence. Without it what Paul says is just Pop-Sci. -------------------- UPDATE after the 70th comment -------------------------- I did not expect 10s of long comments! Most of them made really good points. I know most likely you are not going to read them all, so let me summarize a lot of them: The slime video solving maze is the source of most confusion. Both because it seems to be aware of the solution "magically" as well as people thinking this is a "unique" behavior. There is no magic nor a unique maze solving power that suggests intelligence. I will explain why and how both are wrong. --Magic-- If you slow-mo at @4:37 you can actually see the slime is exploring ALL corridors before converging to a stable shortest path solution (they just disappear very quickly). The exploration part is exactly why we have the "exploring" term in Rapidly-exploring Random Trees (RRT) that I mentioned originally. After watching the slime growth in slow-mo then watch this simulation to see how RRT algorithm actually works. ua-cam.com/video/Mezx29eBbNk/v-deo.html Note that in the slime footage there are two pieces of slime at the start and at the end of the maze, just like this simulation. More examples ua-cam.com/video/pOFtvZ_qVsA/v-deo.html --Uniqueness-- Take a look at how ink + soap + milk can solve the maze problem the same way that fungi do it (I am sharing it from my personal drive, let me know if it does not work) drive.google.com/open?id=1C0p97SrAP8tO1BSA8CdihoVe6sil3-1t The original paper with details on its dynamics www.news.ucsb.edu/2018/018634/soap-opera --Intelligence-- So do we need to think that anything that can solve a maze problem is intelligent? I would say it depends on the definition of intelligence. If by intelligence we mean a more narrowed term associated with human cognitive abilities (that is what people associate the term with by default), then no; It is an anthropological mistake. If we mean a broader spectrum of intelligence that spans anything from electrons to humans, I would say yes we can. But again Paul does not clarify this definition. So using the term intelligence is very much misleading.
i doubt he read all of that. as soon as i pressed 'show more' and saw multiple paragraphs i lost interest. I was more interested in what people replied.
Peace and Love, keep up the amazing work my brother I believe everyone watching this and the person who made this, will experience great success come into their life!
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I've heard that interview twice and it's all sooo much info to digest. By you giving me a visual helps understand way more thank you
The optimization isn't due to any intelligence, instead it occurs naturally just like evolution. Its simply the result of many millions of trial-and-error actions performed by individual cells
Paul-- I majored in Psychology and Religion with a minor in Anthropology and Shamanism was the result of the merging of the 3. I became interested in the use of shaman sweat lodge ceremonies in the treatment of PTSD for Vietnam Veterans. This was cutting edge in the late 90s. Though some progress was made with herbs, heat and darkness, real progress was made with psilocybin in small doses. This was shunned because of them being schedule 1 narcotics, and many people continued to suffer needlessly. The concept of psychedelics aiding in human evolution is logical. As monkeys crawled out of the trees and became hunter-gatherers, following the massive herd of food would have also meant they experimented with eating plants along the way. Mushrooms would have no doubt been in abundance. And it did not take long to realize that smaller amounts of a certain one increased visual acuity and focus, and aided in a hunt. It also resulted in more liberating celebrations after the successful hunt, resulting in what was to become a ritual, structuring the first early cultures. Another result of inhibition would have been a population explosion, rapid generational procreation, quickening physical adaptation to not only physical demands, but reflecting an increased perception by increasing cognitive capacity. THe result was early humans experienced a drastic increase in cranial volume - nearly doubling the size of the brain, in just 300,000 years if I recall. Terrance McKenna advocated this view in the 70s and maintains that the pyschodelic experience is part of continuing human evolution . And that has been my experience as well. Keep up the good work!
This is a silly fun thought at most. Why don’t they try the experiment and see if they start becoming humans lol they won’t and they definitely won’t make a new language. They have pineal calcification. Meaning they wouldn’t be able to continue that high level of thinking. The jump is too big to ever reach each other. I think people underestimate how big of a jump that is and pretty much impossible. They aren’t enlighten creatures, not to the point of keeping up with the mental capacity. It doesn’t work like that, all they could do is remember the experience. You’re grown and think that we came directly from monkey evolution? It’s not even a possibility 😂
I love you guys at After Skool! Love the knowledge and expansion of my consciousness. You guys rock. Please keep doing what you’re doing! All of the love and blessings in the world to you guys 🙏💕

It’s really not that deep bro, conservative thinkers fear what they don’t know, the reason these “drugs” are illegal is because politicians DONT know what they’re all about, not the opposite
Not to bash on the non drug use talk of this. But while under the influence of mushrooms I noticed a lot of things change within my brain. Some good some bad but I could see how that relates to the hypothesis. One who eats the mushrooms and has bad experiences would be less likely to be the clans leader. Where as the positively affected individuals would look to better the group or at least be using the mushrooms influence to better themselves and observe the surroundings in a different light. Mushrooms are fun and educational when used properly

Psilocybin containing mushrooms saved my life. They drastically reduced my benzodiazepine withdrawal allowing me to quit illicit pill addiction after three years of heavy daily use before it would had become medically dangerous to quit.
Ph.D. in genetics here. I specialized in tissue regeneration and just wanted to amend the idea of “new neurons” and “neuron regeneration” because those things don’t happen in developed brains. I think he means to say that new connections between neurons are made i.e. new neural networks are build through the formation of axonal projections from one neuron to a second neuron that previously had no connection with the first neuron. This is super interesting because forming new neural networks (building different neural highways) is the blueprint for developing new behaviors and, for example, is the exact goal of psychotherapy for people with PTSD and other chronic mental conditions. My sister is a therapist and is going to do some work with utilizing ketamine alongside psychotherapy and compare the effects of this combination on treatment vs. just therapy alone. Didn’t mean to be a stickler here, just don’t want anyone to get the wrong idea about brain physiology, because sadly our neural tissues (and most of our tissues) do not naturally regenerate. We have, however, successfully repaired broken spinal cords in other mammals like mice and dogs, so be on the lookout for really cool advances in regenerative medicine in the next few decades :)
Plants and fungi evolved neurotoxic compounds to kill herbivores to stop them from eating them. Evolutionary pathways required to produce these compounds can take a long time to form, and as they are forming, herbivores are forming counter-defense mechanisms to neutralize the toxic anti-herbivory substances. The result is that among the thousands of evolutionary lineages of plants and fungi, there are vast array of compounds produced, each of which is tailored evolutionary to defend against whichever predators negatively influence the survival of each species of plant/fungi the most. Take psilocybin in mushrooms for example. The main predator of these varieties of mushrooms are flies. In flies, psilocybin inhibits a neurotransmitter responsible for making the fly feel hungry. So, the compound stops the predator before it can kill the fungi. Countless neurotransmitters in all species of animals are regulated by the same handful of compounds, so it is not surprising that when psilocybin mimics the structure of 1 specific neurotransmitter inhibitor in flies, this structure also inhibits any neurotransmitter in any species that is regulated by the same type of neurotransmitter inhibitor. Within the brain, normal consciousness is achieved through coordinated and highly-regulated patterns of neuronal impulses. Psilocybin inhibits a number of neurotransmitters that regulate neuronal impulses; the result being that parts of the brain fire in a different pattern than normal. This causes the change in perception of consciousness. *TL;DR: Neurotransmitters cause all of the changes in our brains. 1 neurotransmitter in flies makes them feel hungry. Psilocybin blocks this neurotransmitter to make them stop eating the mushroom. BUT psilocybin also blocks neurotransmitters that make the neurons in human brains fire in regular patterns. Consciousness is dictated by these patterns of brain activity, and this change in patterns of brain activity is what causes the change in perception of consciousness.*
We all have a common ancestor. Psilocybin works because it is structurally similar to serotonin and can fit into serotonin receptors. The neurotransmitters are ancient. Likely they split into different trees millions of years ago, but the shape of the molecule is still close enough to fit into receptor sites
According to the speed a fungi grows, and let's say for a moment that it does exchange data with other species of fungi as well, how long does it take for it to cover the whole surface of earth? And let's say that it already has. Does that make earth like a supermassive brain with humans not being able to understand it?
thats a good question it actually has been proven that underground networks of fungi communicate. trees also send vibrations through fungi to other trees and the largest living thing in the world is actually an underground network of fungi so you might be on to something
LOVE and LIGHT - I remember in the 80s when my friends and I would have huge trip parties in "high school," eating magic mushrooms was my favorite. When one explores this safely with experienced shamans and/or spiritual healers that know how to handle the good, bad, and the “heroic dose,” it can be one of the most enlightening and healing experiences. There’s a reason why ancient native tribes around the globe believe in hallucinogenic spiritual experiences, especially during the beginning and end of each of the four seasons (solstices).

Robert Graves, author of some of the most popular compendiums of Greek mythology says in his prologue that he believes that all those wonderful gods and demigods were the result of the images and stories produced by the consumption of a hallucinogenic mushroom called “amanita muscaria” which produces prophetic visions, erotic energy, muscular strength and debauchery. In his view, ancient Greeks consumed the amanita and through their trips received the information used to create their rich and influential mythology. Honor our ancestors.

When you really think about it, it's not that strange. This is the most efficient way to connect many nodes, so logically this will turn up in multiple instances in nature.
It's strange that the life currently on Earth, which all evolved from a common ancestor on the same planet with the same atmospheric composition and the same laws of physics, exhibit superficial similarities?
Our problem is that human beings see other living things as a separate unit of energy. We all are of same energy expressed in zillions of forms yet identical.

Not only are bravery and empathy leadership qualities, in many cultures these leaders were shamans or some sort of spiritual guide as well
As much as I like how Paul tries to think out of the box, there are a lot of misconceptions or wrong statements going on here. I just name two:
-------------------- UPDATE after the 70th comment --------------------------
I did not expect 10s of long comments! Most of them made really good points. I know most likely you are not going to read them all, so let me summarize a lot of them:
The slime video solving maze is the source of most confusion. Both because it seems to be aware of the solution "magically" as well as people thinking this is a "unique" behavior.
There is no magic nor a unique maze solving power that suggests intelligence. I will explain why and how both are wrong.
--Magic--
If you slow-mo at @4:37 you can actually see the slime is exploring ALL corridors before converging to a stable shortest path solution (they just disappear very quickly). The exploration part is exactly why we have the "exploring" term in Rapidly-exploring Random Trees (RRT) that I mentioned originally.
After watching the slime growth in slow-mo then watch this simulation to see how RRT algorithm actually works.
ua-cam.com/video/Mezx29eBbNk/v-deo.html
Note that in the slime footage there are two pieces of slime at the start and at the end of the maze, just like this simulation.
More examples
ua-cam.com/video/pOFtvZ_qVsA/v-deo.html
--Uniqueness--
Take a look at how ink + soap + milk can solve the maze problem the same way that fungi do it (I am sharing it from my personal drive, let me know if it does not work)
drive.google.com/open?id=1C0p97SrAP8tO1BSA8CdihoVe6sil3-1t
The original paper with details on its dynamics
www.news.ucsb.edu/2018/018634/soap-opera
--Intelligence--
So do we need to think that anything that can solve a maze problem is intelligent? I would say it depends on the definition of intelligence. If by intelligence we mean a more narrowed term associated with human cognitive abilities (that is what people associate the term with by default), then no; It is an anthropological mistake. If we mean a broader spectrum of intelligence that spans anything from electrons to humans, I would say yes we can. But again Paul does not clarify this definition. So using the term intelligence is very much misleading.

Except the bad trips teach you the most, the best leaders would literally journey into hell and back.
There’s a lot of potential in psychedelics, I can’t wait to try any of them mushrooms specifically but it’s just so hard to find a reliable source over here, I’ll be glad if anyone can be of help
Psilocybin containing mushrooms saved my life. They drastically reduced my benzodiazepine withdrawal allowing me to quit illicit pill addiction after three years of heavy daily use before it would had become medically dangerous to quit.

Yo, this fungi is drawing and talking to me through space and time.
Ph.D. in genetics here.
This video is no less than a psychedelic trip
I always questioned why earth created these psychedelic elements that somehow trigger something inside our brain when we digest it
I always assumed maybe it's a defense mechanism from the mushroom. But then again, what kind of defense doesn't defend you? Lol
Lord Gremlin they do not trigger. The remove. We take away constructs that have infected us. What’s left is the real you
Same reason why caffeine, capsaicin, menthol, etc. exist. Defense mechanisms that aren't powerful enough to kill us make us feel weird.
We should call the Big Bang "whatever the fuck happened".
why
People follow leaders who are Courageous and Kind. Powerful quote Stamets my good sir.
This is fascinating! I get very annoyed when older folks shut this theory down ONLY because of the stigma.
Older folks? I'm 58 how old are you?

LOVE and LIGHT - I remember in the 80s when my friends and I would have huge trip parties in "high school," eating magic mushrooms was my favorite. When one explores this safely with experienced shamans and/or spiritual healers that know how to handle the good, bad, and the “heroic dose,” it can be one of the most enlightening and healing experiences. There’s a reason why ancient native tribes around the globe believe in hallucinogenic spiritual experiences, especially during the beginning and end of each of the four seasons (solstices).
I’ve listened to this podcast its amazing. This illustrative piece is great!! XX

Agreed
Wish they touched on space spores, makes trips even better when you learn fungal bodies have travelled all over space to different planets and stars/universes… as if they’re the tool to colonize livable planets for biological life forms…

What an ilustrative talk about mushrooms, I think the are awsome!
As some one who has tried shrooms. I can see how this could be very possible.
Rex Erection i agree with the comment above. It changed my left personally, by changing my point of view of this world and my true self. I wouldn't recommend doing mushrooms is you have really bad social anxiety. Unless you have some one who you true trust to help bring you back down to a stable mind, if you start having a bad trip.
Rex Erection yeah, they make you think alot. It's a very emotional high in my opinion.
Rex Erection they can help but you have to make sure you feel safe and calm. So you won't fall off the boat
Rex Erection its deferment from person to person but for me the wilderness/vegetation helps calm me down.
Rex Erection I'm not quite sure. Never had to deal with it my self.
It is strange how roots of plants like trees or mushrooms look like the connections of neurons in our brains.
Perhaps everything _is_ connected.
it is.
When you really think about it, it's not that strange.
This is the most efficient way to connect many nodes, so logically this will turn up in multiple instances in nature.
erikpoephoofd similar forces produce similar shapes.
It's strange that the life currently on Earth, which all evolved from a common ancestor on the same planet with the same atmospheric composition and the same laws of physics, exhibit superficial similarities?
Tyler Harding it's the same thing as causation vs correlation. Things are not automatically related just because of similarly.
Our problem is that human beings see other living things as a separate unit of energy. We all are of same energy expressed in zillions of forms yet identical.
I am totally impressed with this article. There is so much that we don't know but the end of the video hits the nail on the head.
