Pras Talks First Fugees Album Only Selling 12 Copies, Dropping Out of Yale

- Fugees founder Pras sat down with VladTV to speak about the history of the group, and how he dropped out of Yale to pursue a career in music. He explained that the group initially started out consisting of himself, Lauryn Hill, and another unnamed girl. He said the third girl backed out of the group after they didn't get a deal after graduating from high school, and she went on to go to college. Pras added that Wyclef later joined the group.
While he was enrolled in one of the most prestigious schools in the U.S., Yale, Pras explained that he was more passionate about pursuing a career in music, so he decided to drop out and chase his dream with Lauryn and Wyclef.
After getting several offers from record labels, Pras said the Fugees decided to take the least lucrative deal from Ruffhouse because he liked the direction they were going in and what they represented. After releasing their debut album, Blunted on Reality, to a dismal sale of twelve copies, the label wanted to drop the group. However, Pras said several people at the label pushed for them to have a second chance, which produced their highly successful second album, The Score.
Check out more of what Pras had to say in the above clip. - Розваги
"Right before success, your comfort zone has to be disrupted"! Remember that folks.
He look like he dont trust vlad
lol
He has him at gun point, this nigga scared shitless
it's probably because he has done well over a million interviews in his time. it's just how he is in interviews i'm guessing as he has been doing them for well over 20 years
RIGHT! Lol
He look like he 25 years old. Black Don't Crack!
The look on Pras face when Vlad said, " Wow 2/3 of he group went to Ivy Leagues, impressive!" I'm weak😲😲😲😲
😆
Lol
no wonder they were so successful they're all fucking educated
*MESSAGE *
+zacatetas yeah. Columbia University only accepts the dumbest 6% of all students.
***** Educated people can do stupid things.
Define educated? They all only have high school diplomas
@@versatillion15 attending university. You know you don't have to graduate for it to be your alma mater. Or for you to be an alumni.
And he had good reason to broke out. To concentrate on his career.
His face is so serious on "We sold 12 copies" 😂😭😩
lol blank face
yes because of that damn 2pac all eyez on me
+Jacques Agnant A.K.A Haitian Jack
Yep! As well as illmatic, and jay z's first album
But they legendary now.
Lol his face
I can't believe they were making such amazing decisions at 17, 18. Impressive
11:18-11:52
Vlad: "Do you remember how much it sold"
Pras: "We sold about 8, 12"
Vlad: "12,000"
Pras: "No. Twelve"
Vlad: "No, no, I'm not talking about The Score. I'm talking about Blunted on Reality"
Pras: Yeah. At that time we sold about 12 copies.
This whole exchange 😂🤣💀💀
Vlad: Nobody bought the album.
Praz: We’ll 12 people did.
😂😂😂
12 copies?? Still out sold TYGA that's crazy!
lmao
Shiiiid!
Who?
yea Tyga straight🚮
😅😂😁😆
I enjoyed this interview because it was like a story. The way it left off actually had me wanting to hear the rest. Guess I'll have to wait for 7 more Jamar interviews and the next 13 cuts of Bow Wow and Mozzy...
12 people fux wit the fugees since day 1. Lol
Lmao!!!!
the only people that can say that legitimately lmao
Chill dude 😂😂
LMAO
Had it on wax after seeing Vocab on Pump It Up.
Whoever that chick was I know she mad salty.
+v3z still, you're saying if you missed the opportunity to be in a legendary group like that by just a few years, you would be fine with it just cause you're financially better off? who knows, had she been in the group, things might have gone differently and they might be doing well right now
+v3z lol. You know people are going to believe you're serious or you seriously believe what you just said. Pras is doing quite well. I've sat down with him regarding his watch collection for instance and catalogued nearly 3 million. Besides the solid gold Patek Philipe he's wearing in this video. Real estate, music and video production...
where the comments go??
All the salt
Vlad: 12,000?
Pras: nuh TWELVE!!!
-So... Nobody bought the record...
-Well, twelve people did.
im dead right now! that part got me lmfao...
Lmfaoooo
I think he's exaggerating because I own one of them
I bought it at 13 yrs old.
Shout out to Pras for saving ODB's life on the award show by moving him off of the pyrotechnics 5 secs before they went off. I bought Ghetto Superstar just for that reason. And I was one of the original 12 that bought their first album.
Dope interview. Fugees just killed it when they came out - the whole album was perfectly curated.
I guess I was one of the 12...I bought the cassette after opening for them at Howard University Homecoming 1993. Blunted On Reality.
@Jarrel Ely if he was, he didn't perform. Sony/Columbia Records must have been sponsoring because all the main opening artists were under that umbrella. Fugees, Xscape and Joe Public.
@Jarrel ElyDon't remember all the songs they did. But I remember being in this big waiting room where all the artists hung out before the show. Wyclef started a cypher and invited us to participate. They performed "The Beast" from the 2nd album in the cypher.
Me too, calgary ab Canada, early 90s
They must have re released that coz I had the CD in like 95 and I'm in London...
Me too. I purchased the first album as well.
Damn, this dude still looks young
The Score album was a classic! The fugees need to get back together
Lauryn's on some other shit now. It's a shame
+Juice 😂😂😂
"True MCs can't occupy the same space at the same time... it's against the laws of physics..."
+Yoel Dawit ....."so we bet you're sweet dreams break up like Eurythmics rap rejects".
Two MCs.
But yeah, that's one of my top 3 faves from the album.
So ironic I was thinking about the Fugees this morning. Real good to from Pras. "The Score" cd is still in my car. CLASSIC!
Who?
Salute!!!
Masterpiece. The album that made me fall in love with hip hop, had that shit on repeat when I was like 5. Still bangs today
I needed to hear this interview!!!!

Great interview, Classic Hip Hop .
I still have my cassette tape, of Blunted On Reality. It's a dope and obviously slept on album. 💯

This story is INCREDIBLE! MEGA inspiring.
I still love Blunted on Reality and back in the 94 I played Nappy Heads almost every day
dope interview
Saving grace is the smile of pras! Such a great and real smile!
More interviews like these, less Savage Uzi Yung death
this is cool but hows vlad not gonna ask about a fugees reunion?
+20thletter54 that shit ain't happening like the rapture (lol)
That was probably the one condition. Lol!
+Mecha Soldier still some bs for not trying to see wasssuuppp
Vlad need to interview more hiphop old heads that made the game, like this one
What a great interview
Pras is right if you have a goal and you re ambitious enough to do the steps to attain it. You gotta say screw it go for and take the gamble and make it happen it s great advice for anyone that has thier eye on the prize
Great interview
Vlad! Thank you for this interview. The Fugees changed my life. Respect! Glad to see Pras speaking and telling these stories
great interview with a LEGEND
Thanks Vlad for the interview 👌👍👊
Pras in the interview like "Yeah yeah hurry it up I gotta be at work at Subway in an hr"
he's worth 20 million dollars
So am I now shut up and laugh
Yeah. He's eating well off publishing. Still a funny comment tho...
+Jay Smack lol chea!!!

One of my favorite people and group .
Wow. Great interview. I didn't get this man but I respect him 1000 fold after this. I totally get him now. Thanks Vlad.
its big how you've got Pras on a interview keep it up VladTV
Love this dude...
interesting hearing how Pras runs it down with that great voice of his after reading Clef's book
Good shit
Vlad, we need to hear the story behind The Score - that album is right up there with the very best. Defined a generation.
Seems like a STAND UP GUY!....
He is. Check out the documentary he did some years back where he went undercover as a homeless man on skid row to show what its like.
Byron Seward
Will do, thx!
askari thagreat yup, saw them post it on there a while back but you know how they always remove shit lol
seems like a wierdo
Who?
It's nice to know I was one of the 12 who brought the album.
I am glad to see Pras is still looking good.
A great question would be if there will ever be another fugees album?
This was a cool interview.....more Vlad
lmbo at the comments today! This is how a sober minded 90s rapper looks and speaks lol! No he doesn't have 10 stacks and bloodshot eyes. These are called complete sentences fcol... and just think... Pras was one of our worst rappers... I hate to think what the comments would say if he interviewed Lauryn Hill or a real emcee... they may say she is having a seizure or something... all those syllables she use in a single word...
(lol)
haha yell
W
amen
I agree with your sentiments but Pras was NOT an awful MC.
on of my favourite rappers
6:20 What's so "impressive" about that Vlad? I swear, it feels as if Vlad is talking to these guests from a "visitor of Hip-Hop and Black American culture's" point of view. It's like.. he loves this Hip-Hop culture that we Black Americans invented from slavery, the black power movement, and the civil rights movement BUT he's still... fascinated by the ACTUAL black PEOPLE. For instance, a white rapper dropping out of Yale to rap is not that impressive... right Vlad? That particular guy was just "following his dreams". But Pras? "This negro dropping out of school to rap? I expected as much, but him leaving YALE? Hell, him even being accepted to YALE? Then leaving Yale to be a rapper? Wow, Yale? Impressive" That's how you sound Vlad. I USED to think you was only being like that with Lord Jamar. Your interviews are very telling.
You're a moron.
John Smith And you're attention deprived. Nice You Tube channel btw.
U people are so emotional and weird that’s why nobody likes y’all. Insecure and sensitive.
I just know this dude is madd smart, also a good painter. Always been a serious and no bullshit acting out type of a guy.
Wow, I never knew Pras attended Yale. Yale!
Those people he mentioned from the label should have got a huge raise!!!!
real Interview
I bought one of those 12 copies, cuz I copped their first album right when it dropped.
Vlad:12,000?
Pras: No, 12
Vlad: Nobody bought the album?
Pras: 12 people did
you got the vocab!!!!!!
"Bee be bee, bee be bee, bee be bee Bo" - Pras
I remember that me and my cousin used to laugh our ass off when we heard that part.
I never knew Pras had sooo much knowledge....very, very wise brother. Fugees wouldn't have happened without him.
the 1st album i copped the cassette for the nappy headz remix & it was like one other track i liked, i remember the tape was like 8.99 with a notch cut out the plastic case for some reason...all other cassettes was 11.50 @ disc jokey (r.i.p. later fye, r.i.p.)🎼🎵🎶
dude reminds me of rza
thank God u guys didn't get discouraged after selling 12 copies. The Score is top 20 greatest hip hop album
"Never say never when we both in this together / refugees all tougher than ever, what!"
The girl that bailed out the group holds such a big L, I'm intrigued on how she ended up tho
her name is Marcy. she was very talented
MT Prxphet whatever shes doing shes still richer than Praz now
@@MrSudanPresident lol pras got 20 mil, he the richest out of the fugees
@@bymyself0 Praz "Had" 20 million, Praz "Now" has a bus pass & the regret of not smashing lauran hill balls deep
@@MrSudanPresident lol nah pras still got 20 mill......
lol proud to be one of the 12. Had it on wax after seeing Vocab on Pump It Up.
I wonder if that girl regrets leaving what turned out to be the Fugees.
Mad props to Praz for that Skid Row documentary. Not to mention the movie Go For Broke. One of the funniest hood flicks I've seen in a long time.
this man's teeth barely seperate during this interview
HAHAHAHHA
oh my gawd you got me 💀💀💀💀
damn doe😂
He don't want vlad cop ass putting words in his mouth
+stacey jones clap back too raw

That skid row documentary was crazy
Right the one on Netflix
Nope his skid row documentary (2007) is not on Netflix
Legend.
I'm 35 years old grew up in the 90's. Pras got bars!!!
Very wise guy.
Blunted on Reality was a dope album!!!
damn..not even their family picked up their cd?
they're haitian, there's gotta be more than 12 to their family..
mom and pops and aunts where like "fuck your dreams, nigga". savage
word haitan parents.. dont support that type of shit well back then. them mother fuckers are ruff on there kids
Acharich Speaks he said circular music though lol
Lmao.....his Haitian parents told his ass to go to Yale...bet
More interviews like these, LESS LORD JAMAR!!!!!
Beast
I use to rock to the score in my Sony discman on my way to class. Lol.
I remember their first videos they had style but it was clear Lauryn was the star but Wyclef rapped a lot on that video. The guitar sound in the background made the song but the score album is what put them on the map.
Nappy Heads is my fav fugees joint
I like the original one. more than the "Mona Lisa" version.
Matthew Olden same here you mean the one when wyclef screams I grab the mic in a rage right?
the Salaam Remi joint was the best
Glorie Mpaka Yeah, and everybody was like NAPPY HEADS IN THE HOUSE!
Matthew Olden yeah that shit still bumps in the whip
now i really feel special....I Bought That Album!
I copped Blunted On Reality... It was okay - but they clearly hadn't fully cultivated their sound yet... but when they came back, they dropped a mega-classic!!!
I can't wait to hear the Whole Fugees story and The Break-Up
