    I love this video! I have never seen a senior fly RC and gives me hope that I will still love this hobby when I am in my 70's plus! Awesome video and you have an amazing wife!

      Well, I am pushing 75 and luckily can still fly, even 3d helis. But Stuff happens and like quite a few others I have heard of, this plane is too big to safely hand launch and in my case almost took my finger off with the rear prop and sent me to the ER! (This year she got me a new Helicopter) So I made several launchers, but my catapult, works the best. I hope you take a look at it and thanks so very kindly for the words. God Bless. ua-cam.com/video/fECB6U6R0uk/v-deo.html

    My wife got me this for Christmas. I never even knew about this plane. She just picked it out on her own, so we could do some no hassle flying.Here is exactly what the Opterra 2M manual says word for word. 1. Put the aircraft into launch mode with the channel 5 switch. (in my first video that did not work, it went into the ground) 2. Hold the aircraft in one hand and the transmitter in the other. 3. Apply full throttle and throw the aircraft directly into the wind, angled slightly up (5 to 10 degrees above the horizon). 4. Climb to a safe altitude and check the trim. I know others have their own ways, and either way, my Dolly is the safest. The Opterra 2M manual says nothing about throwing it with the motor off. Here's my test flight, launch problems, and tips. Thanks, Happy New Year, and God Bless.
    Dave

      I built a dolly but when the unit got to the end of the runway the plane didn't have enough power to lift. It came off the dolly striking the prop on the foam rail. When I went to try it again the ESC went out. I remember on one of your videos you shared the same problem, you going to a 60A ESC. I put a 50A FMS ESC and what a fight to get that in without binding the motor! Today I reworked the wheels on the dolly and now should be much smoother on the grass.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  3 роки тому

      @@jahatton Yes, and your right, it was a pain getting the bigger esc in for sure. No steering was a problem on my dolly. I wound up putting bigger wheels on mine too, but it still was not steerable and I had to retrieve it, hence I made my NightFlyyer-A-Pult catapult. Check it out and thanks. ua-cam.com/video/fECB6U6R0uk/v-deo.html

    The Opterra has been one of my favorite planes to fly over the past few years. I agree with you that it does need a lot of runway to land. I try to bleed off as much speed as I can on my landing approach. You are right that it is a big plane to see in the sky through 72 year old eyes.

    I just finished up a mildly modded Easy star that was a gift from my father in-law. Replaced the speed 400 with a brushless setup and a 6x3 folder prop, and added ailerons with GWS pico servos. Very stable and climbs like a homesick angel, it has a very acceptable sink rate.

    Ordered one and then canceled it. It was backordered and then it sat in the warehouse for two weeks before they shipped it. It gave me time to think about that hand launch. I was going to only hand launch without the engine, running because the risk of hitting your hand with a prop is too great. I decided it was going to take too much running and hooking that thing to keep it in the air before hitting the throttle. Way too much trouble. I have other things I can fly. Not going to risk, tearing my hand up

  • @evtyler
    @evtyler 3 роки тому +1

    You're far braver than me to hand launch like that with the engine running. I always had a friend throw it and then I would power the motor on when his hand cleared. Needless to say there was often some running required in addition to get enough speed.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  3 роки тому

      Brave, I don't know. But it definitely got me in the next video after this one (maybe you saw it) and sent me to the emergency room for 27 stitches and 2 cut tendons in my finger and it still wont bend all the way. Maybe you also saw my recent solution in this video of my Self Contained Catapult because I don't have anyone who can run and launch this. ua-cam.com/video/fECB6U6R0uk/v-deo.html Thanks much.

    Hey Dave, Happy New Year! I have been flying RC about 18 months now, and Horizon "Safe Mode" still saves my bacon on occasion. I use a two position switch to select "beginner" or "advanced." Just flick that lever for "staight and level" if I get into any trouble. You have so much great content; hope it is archived somewhere so not lost to RC community if something happens to UA-cam.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  4 роки тому

      Thanks so kindly. Yes there is always that emergency switch. I set mine up by the book, but could put it on a 3 position switch, but I probably would never use it again anyway, as it is really an easy plane to fly. Thanks and Happy new year. Nice.... The reason why you were having trouble launching it in "safe mode" is because as you encountered you needed full up trim to keep the plane level so naturally it wanted to dive down while that even affects safe somewhat once you get elevator mechanically centered and trimmed throwing " safe mode " should be easy peasy.. also in flight if u have to trim more you want to trim in as3x mode (non stabilized mode) never do any trimming in safe mode

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  4 роки тому

      I dont need SAFe, but do appreciate your comments. The book says trim it in safe and let it glide for 3 seconds without touching the sticks. On the very first flight, there was no way to trim it, so that is why safe did not work so well. Here is more on the subject. ua-cam.com/video/ur5V5H8UcGs/v-deo.html

    • @MikeSarni
      @MikeSarni 4 роки тому

      @@NightFlyyer that's odd the Opttera manual tells you to trim in safe mode!? none of my aircraft do this you have to trim in as3x mode...I just looked at my manuals for reference and it definitely says not to trim in safe mode does however say trim in as3x and don't touch sticks for 3 seconds or you will have adverse flight conditions..... Also I hear what you're saying about not being able to trim ....it was your 1st flight... this is why u do the trimming in as3x flight mode after the model is up on 1st flight.....i had to do this with my maule m7 yesterday.... If flew "ok" in safe mode but as soon as I switched to as3x it wanted to dive hard...did my trimming for first flight in as3x mode let go of the sticks for 3 seconds and was an uneventful flight....next battery i noticed safe flew even better and as3x was locked in no weird tendancies...

    Will that mains-wheel you add to plane have a fixed drag, or maybe servo-braking? What materials might be considered for "sacrificial skidplate"?

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  4 роки тому

      I could tighten the wheel drag up, but it would wear out fast. It will be fine as is to protect the main fuselage on a long landing. I am using Piano Wire Pushrod for Sacrificial skid plates. Otherwise, Delron may be stronger. Thanks.

    I'd love my opterra if it didn't death spiral to the ground every time I fly it. I've changed out every component except the motor and it still does it. All I can figure is the motor draws too many amps and overpowers the BEC, even the external one that I run now.

    True wings are so stable you will not need a gyro Dave. You will need a HK bungee launcher. It makes it so much easier to get them in the air. Takes a few minutes to set up the launcher but well worth it, especially when you have 2 blown shoulder sockets like me! They are a blast to fly. I have the smaller Zeta Phantom 1550mm wing and I can surf our Texas winds for 30 minutes easy and she will fly in no wind or high winds with no problem! Enjoy.

    Nice... I've thought about the Opterra since it came out. I flew a similar size one a few years back - it was so big I had to have someone else launch it :).
    I wonder if the 'autopilot' (aka. SAFE) mode can be put on a 3-position switch for: beginner autolevel (low throws) / advanced autolevel (more throws) / expert (no autolevel) ? Other SAFE / SAFE-SELECT receivers have that from Horizon. Might be worth looking into.
    PS.. you struck gold with Ilea - no doubt. :)

    • @NightFlyyer

      I could program the autopilot on a 3 position switch if I wanted, but since I learned helis and planes before there were Gyros, and I'm not interested in those crutches. It is way more to fun when I can maneuver easily and not have to fight the autopilot. I guess it would be okay for some, but this plane does not need it. Only good thing for me is if TX fails or it flies out of range, the Autopilot then takes over and it glides for 5 miles, then I'd have to find it. LOL Thanks and your right about Ilea. She is a great person for me. Thanks Jason and Happy New Year.

    AS3X or whatever it is called from E-flite (Horizon Hobby), is the worst marketing product by far.
    I was waiting for the maiden w auto-level ON, exactly what happened w my EDF.
    At least you had snow, my EDF $200 jet blew up in foam pieces. Did not even bother contacting Horizon, ripped out electronics and dumped the fuselage to the trash. The RX was GLUED from factory! to the fuselage.
    You got an awesome Christmas gift, and the wing flies very well!

      Sorry to see you had the same problem but also happy to see I am not alone. I learned to fly helis before gyros were invented and was not fond of them even before I flew this. I will never turn it on again, that's for sure. Thanks much.

    cut the fingertips off a heavy leather glove so your fingertips can get in the recesses and the prop will only try to cut thru the glove -i hit the throttle a half second after tossing it , works good gloveless

    Be careful with hand launching this one! Big, heavy bird with moderate power....and big prop. Inav with auto launch mode would be great.
