...WOW....the reason why I haven't purchased the Opterra was because of the cut fingers I have seen on UA-cam....you are the first person to show a "safe way" to hand launch the Opterra by using your left hand and then turning up the throttle with the left hand...thanks so much....I am ready to revisit purchasing the Optima....
You can still purchase them. Amazon and I think HH. I just looked at them the other day. Just remember quite a few guys have cut hands and tendons. Maybe build a launcher or have someone throw it for you and don't hit the power until he's clear
All parts are still available too I think after a few guys got cut up the sales slowed down I've got a Buddy wirh one. I bought the eagle from XFly, it's EDF jet powered and crazy as hell to fly!
@@dronepilot260rc oh I didn't know that. I've got a Buddy that has one, I toss it for him and I became interested and thought about buying one. I ended buying that XFly Eagle. It's crazy as hell. Nothing like his wing. It'll flat spin so fast you can't count the rotations! Differential thrust on the rudder Channel. Its really a handful and I saw 93mph
Very nice flight, and information. They say that if you do a steep dive you cannot get out of it, unless you switch safe on, it seems to be able to save itself, and do not throttle up, something you would do with a normal pull prop plane, to pull it out of the dive. Brian Philips claims that slightly tailheavy it is more responsive to the elevator response, He has a couple of very nice videos on this plane. I have just ordered one ☺
Very good point! 👍🏼 I don't remember what my highest top speed has been on this... but I have noticed a difference with how it acts in a dive according to the CG! It seemed to make a difference for me and I was glad to find that because it wasn't the best feeling when I first did a nice speed dive and it didn't want to pull up! 🤯🤔😀
Thanks for the videos. I have been out of anything RC for about 30 years and am totally amazed and blown away at the advancements in the tech involved.
I’ve had two of these, now have another on order! But just launch the opterra without throttle then apply power, they do glide well. The only manoeuvre I would suggest you don’t do is a bunt! Outside loop, the battery plate is only held in with place weak glue, it will let go! Reinforce with two pack epoxy that is safe with foam.

I think I currently have 3 but this one as my daily! 😁 Thanks for the advice, should I ask how you found that out? 🙃 Unfortunately Horizon Hobby uses what some of us call "Bath Tub Culk"! Haha! And the only good thing that I probably have to say about that glue is... Well, it's EASY TO REMOVE when it's time to replace it with some REAL glue! 😅 It's a very unique Airframe with strong points and weak ones alike in how it handles! 👍🏼 I hope to upload an Updated Opterra Video to this, since I have done some mods and got alot more stick time since this video was uploaded! Overall very impressive for what it is! And definitely recommended!🙂👍🏼
I've made a practice of always side-launching my wings with my fingers wrapped over the leading edge about half way out. But that does make for a slower release speed than a good football toss. My Opterra 2m is my only plane that is too marginal for that techniques so I bought a 4S for it but haven't gotten around to trying an up-thrust launch yet.
Nice! Yeah, the 2m Opterra has some weight and size to it... primarily because I'm running a larger battery too. I did try a DLG launch once but that wasn't a success and unfortunately no one was around to run the video camera so it wasn't recorded and that's probably okay.. haha! It wasn't much to see although I didn't expect it to survive but it did without damaging anything so that was impressive. It just didn't have enough rudder to recover from the DLG and continued to spin regardless of full throttle! 😅 I have a friend who installed retracts on his but the added weight was significant and I think it messed up his CG so he only got about two flights before it drove in the ground. 😓 I haven't yet tried mine on 4s yet... I wouldn't mind it having more power though! If you try 4s, let me know how it goes and if you like it or if things heat up. 👍🏻
Just came across your vid. Never even knew this plane existed and tbh its not my style. But after watching it I feel like adding this to my Fleet. Great presentation, lots of information and clear and precise. New sub 🇬🇧 👍🏾
Yeah, this is actually version 2 for the E-flite 2m Opterra, so I believe it was discontinued for a time(not sure how long) and than re-released with an updated RX(not sure of the date) I believe everything else is the same and I know the Airframe is the same since I have the V1 also. And I agree that it's maybe not the most scale or realistic in appearance or maybe one that a person would enjoy flying day after day as an only plane... But wow, it does so well in a breeze and on high wind days! It's just nice to have one for when it's too windy for other planes! The FMS 3m Fox is another one of my Go-To planes for a windy day. I just flew it last evening after the sunset and it does so well on calm or windy days! If you get an 2m Opterra, I think you'll enjoy it.. and just practice the tips and you'll never get hurt launching it! Thanks for your comment and for the Subscribe! 👍🏻
I also have an Opterra and have been flying it quite a bit lately. I ONLY use 4s batteries with my opterra...I've never flown with 3s. I've been hesitating flying it because I've been afraid of the launch. I used to launch pusher prop planes all the time when I was younger but as I have gotten older, I tend to be more cautious. I tried bungee launching but didn't have any luck because this thing is so huge. Now I just throw it as hard as i can and then throttle up and it has plenty of power as you know.
Interested to hear that you use 4s, Did you upgrade the ESC or running 4s on stock setup? 🤔 I know what you mean about being cautious, I've heard some bad stories about pusher prop and hand launching. Another friend of mine installed retract and would take off and land! With retracts, the 2m Opterra looked like a Unmanned B2 version or something with his flat black paint job! Pretty cool but with the added weight it was a bit tricky and it met a sad fate. 😢 But I am with you... They say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure... so if it means selling the 2m Opterra to invest in something safer, definitely understandable! 😏 I was flying alone one day and tried a DLG launch with the 2m Opterra...😁 and let's just say, my wife didn't miss much by not being there with a camera! Haha! #Fail. It wouldn't pull out of the spin.. But it survived! 😅
@@HappyRCFlyer Stock ESC. It has so much more punch with a 4s. I actually broke the plane the first few attempts to fly it. I still refuse to spin the motor up before throwing it. Just installed a speedybee f405 wing in it and am going to experiment with the auto launch feature. I have had success with my test plane I hope it works well for the opterra

Nice flight on the Opterra. I have set up one for FPV but experienced range issues on both analog and DJI HD video systems. When I fly more than 500 yards out I start receiving "Low Signal" warnings on both my Analog and DJI HD Goggles. I have tried different antenna configurations and locations, but still experiencing low signal issues on just this plane. Have several other FPV planes that I can fly out close to a mile with no issues. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen and possible solutions. Thanks and keep up the great videos.
Thanks for your comment! I haven't setup mine with FPV but I hope to soon! I'll watch for signal issues and see how it goes. Have you only experienced signal issues with one particular AirUnit or do you use the same Camera/Transmitter combo in different aircrafts? Just wondering if it's possible you picked up a defective AirUnit or maybe having High-Temp power cutoff? You do know it comes factory with that enabled and most guys I know will install a cooling fan and disable that setting. Although if you disable that, it can be "easy" to overheat if it's just setting on the ground with no air flow, like before or after a flight. Maybe you have thought of these things already but didn't think it would hurt to mention. Sorry to hear you're having issues, by the way.
@@HappyRCFlyer Thanks for response. Yes, no heat issues as I mounted everything on outside except the camera. I tried my Air Unit on another FPV plane and it worked fine.
