Okay, you sold me! One look at your finger reminded me of other damage(s) I have done to myself (and I don't need to do that any more!). So, I will be using (and maybe abusing) your sled idea as soon as my Opterra arrives.
Thanks much Roger. I really appreciate that. I found my latest launcher is even better. Check it out and thanks again so kindly. ua-cam.com/video/fECB6U6R0uk/v-deo.html
Consider my issues in this video if you're contemplating purchasing these types of big pusher planes. My issues may not be a problem for some of you, but they are worth considering to be safe and to not hurt yourself like I did before. The finger is healing, but I can't curl it very tight, so thanks for those who asked. I like my sled and now that I have increased power by replacing the faulty stock speed controller, I find it a lot more pleasant to fly. Stay tuned for more and God bless. Dave
the elevons shouldn't be much of an issue as this plane was meant for range and efficiency.. wasn't ever really meant for acrobatics. A guy at my local field has one set up with all the GPS and telemetry stuff..the plane is basically autonomous and he will toss it up and let it fly down the river on set waypoints and its gone long enough to completely forget about the plane being up there while the rest of us are enjoying the field and flying as normal.. then he starts letting us know about 45 minutes later that the plane is on its way back in and to give him room.
Do you still feel your fingers, any nerve damage? Glad youre alright....i sure enjoy your videos... it feels like im flying too, evenrhough its lockdown where im at.

I am very glad to know that it is best from your finger. I love watching your videos. I've been following your channel for many years and I always learn a lot. Greetings from Mexico.
Well Dave, one things for sure, you don't give up, I just never fly this plane unless someone gives it a hard hand toss for me, and then I hit the motor. It dips down a bit, but flies away. It really needed to have speed breaks like the XL Radian. Seems like no matter how far out you cut the motor, it glides forever. It just doesn't want to stall and land. Once it's in the air tho, it's a beast. Glad you're healing. Lord bless you my friend.
Ah, a real Opterra owner. Well If you saw the first video where I got hurt, ua-cam.com/video/AZAxIDfoTgw/v-deo.html you know I followed the instructions. But knowing what I know now, I would never have someone else launch it for me. If they got hurt I would be sued, you know. Only me and my wife fly and I would never ask her to do it, so I had no choice but to make this sled and my dolly in the last video. Thanks and God Bless you as well.
@@NightFlyyer, I have them toss it, but I don't hit the throttle until they are clear of it. I don't take it out much, but it is a fun plane. It's kinda like flying a cow, big and slow. Hi pilot Thank you for your video. I started throwing the Opterra out of my hand without the engine and then I turned on the engine. It needs a stronger throw.
Yes, well I have tried that in my previous videos, but not always did it work in the strong winds. On top of that the one time the prop hit my finger and cut 2 tendons and I needed 27 stitches at the ER. Maybe you saw that video as well. I like my dolly and it is very easy and safe. We have incredible winds here, so I find hand launching this big 7 foot wing a challenge, so hence it's the no brainer dolly for me from now on. I had the same issue with the UMX F27 as the nose would lift when hand launching causing a prop strike on my finger. Luckily that is a small motor and prop but it still cut me slightly.

Hi Dave, Glad the finger is healing. Is the prognosis for improved movement? I like your perseverance. At the end when you were showing the up movement, it appeared to me the retaining nut on the servo horn may have been striking the push rod cover. How about removing the screw and turn it around so the nut is on the left. You and Ilea stay safe.
Finger is getting better. I have an exercise ball to use, so I'm told it will be okay....some day! I really didn't see anything striking anything. It just maxed out the servo, because I had set it up for 150% travel, because I didn't think it was moving enough on my previous flights. Even then I didn't think I was gonna pull out of the loop, and had to back off the throttle. I reset the servo throws to 100%, but will look at it again. It needs bigger control surfaces. Thanks much.
Yes, there are also many that are loud. All my nitro planes and helis have mufflers, but these high speed props and singing, pulsing brushless motors can be quite loud for sure as you know.
Do you have a build video of your wheeled launch cart? If not, would it be possible to get dimensions? What size PVC tubing did you use? Looks like a good safety measure!
You could install a flight controller running Arduplane. Then you can configure auto launch to spin the prop up about a second after launch so that it clears your hand first. You don't even need to be holding the radio as auto launch takes the plane up to a preset altitude then circles above you until you are ready to take control.
I just followed the instructions. I learned to fly helis inverted years ago before gyros were invented for models, so dont depend on them. If the manual said I need to buy one to launch and fly this plane, I would have passed on it.
Please consider putting a flight controller in your planes for auto launch and return to home with something like inav or ardu plane .. This way you don't need to keep the rx in your hand. And yes you can fly in full manual mode as though it had no flight controller at all too but having a flight controller will give you some nice extras which I'm sure you might appreciate
