How Power Door Locks Work

  • Here's how the power door locks and latch works on your car.
The door latch on a car door is responsible for keeping the door shut against the body of the car. For safety reasons, this door latch requires the movement of a handle attached through a connecting rod to open.
The door lock part of the mechanism essentially disables the connecting rods that attach to the interior and exterior handles respectively. It does this by forcing two tabs that would otherwise interlock and open the latch, out of each other's way so they miss each other when the door handle is opened, "locking" the door.
The power door lock part of the mechanism consists of a small 12V DC electric motor with a built in thermister. The thermister actuates when the door lock is overcycled to prevent it from wearing down the motor. The motor powers a small geartrain which turns a small arm. That arm moves the locking rod up and down, "locking" the door in the same fashion as manually locking it.
Most modern cars have built in electronics and sensors to sense the position of the lock and key. These switches essentially feed information to the body control unit to control things like window opening functions, alarm functions, and weather to unlock all doors if turned multiple times.
Finally, the key cylinder comprises of a toothed key that slots into a key cylinder. Inside, small tumblers on springs, conform to the shape of the key, allowing it to rotate in the barrel. These tumblers can be moved around for various key combinations, and is called "rekeying" the cylinder.
The door lock actuator in this video was taken off a 2001 Toyota Corolla.

Good job in ~9 min. I did not expect to get a presentation, as inclusive with so many functions. Even though you were on "rapid fire", you got all the stuff in there and in a logical order.

Thank you! I needed to understand where the rods connect, your video is the only one I've found that shows and explains not just where they belong but also what they do.

Another missed video? Just blows me away the engineering & manufacturing just to add convenience to simply allow entering and exiting your vehicle. Modern marvel. Thank you. Just another mind bending display of the how!

Very concise teardown and description. Thanks. I am curious what mechanism provides for engaging and disengaging between the door lock motor and the final drive gear. What hard to see when you popped off the gears. It seemed to be a clever design but I missed it.

Thanks. This is helping me understand why the front right door on my 2017 elantra won’t open after you unlock the door. It will open but after pulling the handle 2 times. It always opens the second time and only does it when you unlock it. BTW: Be aware of the Hyundai warranty. Many have said is a scam. And it is looking to be true. They denied the repair because of previous body work but the repair was not even on that door. I suspect that I need to replace the door actuator mechanism.

By any chance do you know why my car keeps making the beeping sound (the sound cars make when you lock and unlock them) even when I am driving it. It used to automatically lock when I turned my car on and now it won’t. It used to also unlock automatically when I’d turn off the car but now it won’t. Any ideas?

Hi I know this video was posted a while ago I’ve recently purchased a 2004 Subaru Legacy there are two doors which aren’t opening with the central locking or cabin switch however they can be manually opened. An auto electrician inspected the car and stated the doors have been replaced and it could be the receiver isn’t working. I’ve never heard of these parts having receivers since I thought it’s all from the main computer. Can you provide any input however you can hear the motors working but the door isn’t locking or unlocking
