  • This 299D was binding up and popping like there was an issue with the brake. After some diagnostic time I determined the motor needed to be examined. You’ll see what the autopsy revealed....

    I have a 2005 257b track loader with 4000 hours , it started jerking/popping off the leftside , no hydro leaks , but seems to get worse the more I try to operate ; feels like a brake issue , I fear it needs a drive motor . Any thoughts ? Thx

    I'm getting speed sensor codes 2687-8, e695-3, 41-4 on my cat 297d2 xhp #cat0297dthp200321
    Has run flawless expect have noticed the past >100hrs it would feel like it would hang or have no drive power until I brought the joystick back to neutral then work fine until this happened today.

      Where is yours leaking? I have a 259 n its leaking from the large mounting bolts. I know hydraulic fluid shouldn't be there.

    I've got a 299d2 with just over 1000hrs on it. Had it about a month and the right track locked up 2 days ago. Took the cover off the final drive and it was dry. No oil so the bearings came apart and messed everything up. Was thinking about rebuilding it but before I do can anyone tell me if I need to press the motor off to replace the seal? If so i might be able to buy an aftermarket unit for just a little more.

    I have a 17’ cat289d with 3800 hrs. Everything seems to be running good but there is a whining noise that climes from it when moving. It gets louder when I’m putting it under load such as scooping a bucket full of dirt from a pile. It goes away if I increase the throttle. Could this be a hydraulic pump that is going bad?
    Thank you

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  2 роки тому

      It could be, make sure it’s to the proper level with oil. Also make sure filters aren’t super old. Could also have a suction leak, I’ve seen the belly of them so packed full of crap you can’t see a leak but it’ll suck air and whine.

    I have this same poping noise and it’s like the right side won’t move at all pretty much it’ll sorta go but at snail speed and it’s locking up also as it’s trying to go, is there a manual or starting point I can check and how to Check it I’m pretty mechanically inclined so I wanna try to fix it myself, thanks

    Have you seen any issues with this machine as I have 2 machines they are constantly breaking down. Cat cannot get the parts either. I’m paying for equipment that does not perform due to Tier 4 smog issues

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  2 роки тому +1

      That specific machine hasn’t been bad other than the random drive motor issue and some hoses. I have worked on a 259 that had some tier 4 related issues. Unfortunately anything tier 4 or tier 4 final is prone to problems. The most helpful things are minimal idle time, quality DEF and good preventative maintenance practices.
      If they’re out of warranty then can be deleted….

    Is there a truck to taking that speed sensor out? Is there anything else holding it in other than that Allen head bolt?
    Thanks!

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  2 роки тому

      Just that bolt. It’s not uncommon for the o-ring to kinda grow in there with all the dirt fines packing it in. I’ve had some come out fairly easy and some I really had to work at. If you can get it to twist a little you can usually start to work it up out of there.

    When you take the final drive off can you pull the drive motor through the whole the final drive mounts too ?

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  Рік тому

      Yes. You may have to pull the hydraulic fittings off, I don’t recall for sure.

    Thanks, I just bought a 299d3 xe and I’m curious what you think about the machine?

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  2 роки тому +1

      They’re a good machine. Depending on what you plan to use it for they’ll go a long time. Running forestry mulchers kills the hydraulic system quick. Keep the idle time to a minimum, service it regularly and use Cat filters. One of the most often overlooked things on them is the oil in the planetaries. Change it every oil change. It doesn’t take long, doesn’t use much oil but it’s important.

      @@scottaddison8071 I don’t know anything about them. I deal with mostly Cat and some Takeuchi. Sometimes it boils down to dealer support. I think it would be as good as any other major brand.

    How do you remove the swashplate out of the drive motor

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  3 роки тому

      There’s a bit of a process to get to the point you can remove it. You’ll get into the motor and remove the springs for the brake, then the hub and pistons come out. Those ride on the swash plate. If you’re working on a specific machine I can send you Cat instructions. Model and S/N would be needed to get correct info to you.
      Most motors like that operate the same so they all come apart in similar fashion. You’ll have a cover of some sort, there will be spring pressure applied by several springs or a large Belleville washer. You’ll need to capture spring pressure one way or another to remove the snap ring. Once brake parts are out you’ll be down to the pistons and their retainer/drive hub. In a drive motor like this the swash plate is in a fixed position.
      Hopefully that gives you an idea.

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  4 роки тому +1

      Aaron Pierre if I recall the snap ring you’re working with it is under pressure from the springs inside the motor that act as the brake. It is spring applied, hydraulic release. Email me machine model and S/N at thejunkyardmethod@yahoo.com and I can send you the procedure.
