I even said I enjoyed the video... the singing was dope and Teddy was cool as hell... but I do have a right to disagree with the way Kanishia came off. Well, for starters, my fathers have committed no crimes against black people... my mother's family did not move to the States til WW1, and from what little my mother knew of my father, he was first generation Italian-American... My family wasn't here for slavery, sorry that can't be held against me. And while I will admit there are prejudiced people out there and there are disadvantages in the academic and employment arenas, not every white person is trying to brainwash anyone. If anything, I'd say the reason little African kids would run up to a white person over a black person is not because of a perceived God complex... it's because it was BLACK people who sold slaves to the Americans for money. And WHITE Northerners who fought against their Southern brothers to end it. And again, you assume I'm privileged and entitled based on the fact that you only see one group of people as being discriminated against... black people. But outside of the poverty and abuse and homelessness and struggle I grew up in, I am disabled, as was my mom, and ours are not physically identifiable disabilities... which puts me at an automatic disadvantage, both as being seen as a burden to society and in terms of what I am capable or incapable of... not to mention the fact that "invisible" disorders as they are called are often mocked, abused, and generally not believed, meaning people assume I can do more than I can and punish me for the fact that I can't live up to that. It's proven fact that people born into severe poverty are at a disadvantage and have to work twice as hard to begin with, add to that being born to a single mother and deadbeat dad... but being disabled on top of that, I'd have to work even harder than that... if I even could... to get half as far as the rest of my peers, regardless of their color. And, while you are able to do twice the work to overcome your unfair disadvantage, I am not. The stress of this disadvantage caused my mother to commit suicide after decades of simultaneously trying to get the help she needed to function and being told by society there was nothing wrong with her. So again, you have no right to call someone entitled or privileged just because they're at a different starting point. Do I think it's fair that black people were enslaved, or are discriminated against or mistreated, no. But it's not fair when it happens to me either, nor is it fair of you to dismiss my suffering and disadvantage because of what you SEE. You are young and bitter and I understand that, but you assume I won't try to see your side of things because you assume all white people are the same and we are not. (Speaking of which, will you try to understand my point or just stay bitter?) And you assume there is no other group at an automatic disadvantage and you are again wrong. And you are way too bitter to be a weed smoker... at least around me. I use that shit to mellow out.

+Doo fy Not only do not all blacks sing with soul, not all blacks can sing. I say that as a music education major. Not every black has the same timbre, but it is a common trait that blacks get characterized as having a darker color to the voice. It honestly depends on the singer, although we tend to emulate what we hear/listen to.

In my experience, MOST black singers' voice sounds "thicker", where as other ethnicities, sound "thinner". It's hard to explain, but there are only a few non-white singers I can think of that "sound black"; Joss Stone, Teena marie, Bobby Caldwell, Lisa Stansfield, Michael McDonald, and Jon B

You're misinterpreting what she's saying I think and what black people tend to mean when we say the struggle usually.
She means cultural struggle. The black culture(s) are primarily derived
from struggle through slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights era,
disproportionate poverty and simply the feeling of being a minority that
many feel. This is the environment that bred the cultures that are
considered black in America. So even if the individual didn't go through
struggle, they are likely heavily influenced by a culture or cultures
that were born in those harsher conditions known as the "struggle".

I think this video is pretty dumb overall and kind of insulting. I mean, how can you invite specific guests to your studio and then call it a random selection of singers? It's also asking the wrong question. There's truth to the idea that different cultures have different sounds, both in language and music. So if you define the sound of "having soul" as "sounding black"... then it's not surprising that black people are more likely to sing with soul.
Different sounds and instruments have their origins all over the world. The precursors to the electric guitar (American) was the vihuela (Spanish) which was based on the lute (European) which was based on the oud (North African). The banjo is based on an African Instrument. The accordion, so closely associated with German polka music, originated in Asia. And pretty much every culture around the world invented drums and flutes independently of one another.
Typically, music rooted in West Africa is very percussive and uses many more complicated polyrhythms than classical European music, where the musical tradition is largely rooted in the church. To say white people don't sing "with soul" IS pretty bigoted. We (yes, I'm white) just don't usually sound the same as most black people, and you may interpret one style as preferable to you, which is fine. There are also white people out there who really can sing with "soul" the way black people can, they're just fewer and further between because it's a sound more closely associated with another culture. I personally like singer-songwriter stuff (typical white guy I know), but I find that I prefer the sound of women singers. That doesn't mean I hate men or think they're worse at singing, just my opinion.
Music is always changing and evolving and people borrow from other cultures as well as those that came before them. I do recognize that appropriation can be a problem, but as long as the culture isn't being used as a prop or a joke it should be fine. It's stupid to nit-pick differences in culture and expression and claim it's proof that one is superior to another. It's only proof that they're different. And you're allowed to prefer one sound, but it doesn't mean you have to completely invalidate another. It's not a zero sum game where there's only so much "soul" to go around.
As a musician I can promise you that your typical classical musician has just as much soul as a gospel singer, they just express it differently.

Sandra Rose I got them all right and that's exactly what they meant by black singers sounding differently from other races. Plus, our voices are generally different. It's not a bad thing or a downplay against other races. It's just a note of the differences. I don't see how people see that as wrong.

Well....its true. Its forced soul, as in not authentic. Not all white people have forced soul though; there are rare cases like Jon B. for example but that's rare. I guessed 100% correctly as well. U can literally hear the difference. We can sit here and be politically correct all we want but you can't deny that there is a distinct difference between the two.
