Do I See Jesus Standing Right Before Me...or do I only see the Scripture?

  • In this video I share an interaction Jesus has with the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law. the interaction is found in the New Testament, John Chapter 5. The Pharisees were known for their diligence in "studying the Scriptures," and yet here Jesus seems to be telling them that knowledge of Scripture is nothing compared to the knowledge of the Love of God in their hearts. And in fact he tells them that they do not have the Love of God in their hearts because they seek the praise of others more then knowing God. I find this so interesting, that these "diligent" students and teachers of Scripture seemed to think that knowing Scripture was what would assure their "eternal life." These were the very Scriptures that talked about the coming Messiah, who was now standing right before them! Yet, they were blind, they could not recognize Jesus, the Living Word, because they were so set on their idea of what that Messiah would be like. So much so that they called Jesus a heretic, a false teacher, and even the devil!! Wow!
I have much to contemplate as I read this passage of Scripture. It challenges my heart. It causes me to step back and examine the lens through which I have learned and studied Scripture.
Dear God, may I never worship my interpretation of the written word of Scripture to the point that I miss the Living Word standing right before me. God open my heart so wide that the only lens through which I read it is love. Amen.
