It was during the music on the PA before the One Republic concert in Madrid Nov 2014 when all of a sudden me and my ex went…WAIT, THIS SONG KICKS A**, WHO IS THIS????…thankfully I remembered the CHORUS and courtesy of the internet I found Metric! Been a fan since then…finally saw them in Denver March 2019 while in agonizing pain -my right arm had been left with little blood for one night and the pain the following weeks was unbearable, but hell, Emily and the boys made it worthwhile!
I blame it on the Music Mafia.... their stranglehold on the major avenues of music distribution and their suppression of anyone not signed with them has likely kept this band from anything other than direct search results. The saddest thing is that the only popularity outside of Canada comes from the fact that Black Sheep was in Scott Pilgrim vs the World and yet sadly, all the comments in that video are either that Bree Larson did it better or some stupid quotes from the movie.... its just memes or idiocy from Bree Larson fans.... almost no true Metric fans.
@@UberNerd I dunno if anyone remember but in old iTunes there were playlist of singers and bands with commentaries to each song, song by Metric was in Chester Benington playlist (he wrote "she sounds like she just had sex, and I love it"), that's how I found them, and they were in Twilight OST, so I assumed they were pretty big, turns out I was dead wrong, and that's sad because even their oldest song still sounds fresh, like it was just recorded. Very rare tbh
Metric got pretty big outside Canada, much bigger then say Broken Social Scene. No bigger crime then the lack of exposure for the Collective that Emily came from.
Kagan Roy while I would agree that synthetics was their best album for a long time, they are putting out stuff more recently that is back to their original flavour. I think now or never is right up there with their best stuff from nearly a decade ago
I just saw metric tonight and this was their last song, a girl next to me started sobbing, I can only imagine how much it meant to her. The power of music, man
This song means so much to me. Quit my government job and went commercial fishing with my husband. This was the first song I heard on the oyster rock. I saw it as a miracle, like breathing under water. He had a fatal car accident, I lost everything and try to continue. Now it means something totally different. Thanks for your beautiful voice
roanm05 my life is so full because of Eddie. Today he would have been 41 today. Very hurt and sad til I realized he isn't truly gone. He showed me the kind of love most people never even know exists. I still console others who miss him terribly. He lives through those he continues to touch. Even your show of compassion today. Thank you so much.
I had the pleasure of seeing metric live, and during this song, they paused. The lead singer gave a small speech and encouraged the audience to sing along. I swear it was magic. A whole stadium of people all singing the chorus. Another reason to appreciate these amazing musicians
Went to see these guys in concert last weekend & still can't cease to think about it. They put on one hell of a show that I won't soon forget. Terribly underrated band, imho.
Metric is still one of my favorite bands. Saw them for the first time by accident in 2012 at Lollapalooza. There are clips of that show on this video, the performance blew me away. Filmed them in 2012 Lollapalooza, 2014 Roitfest, 2022 at the Chicago Theater, and now in 2024 at Milwaukee Summerfest. I have 3 live versions of this song "Breathing Underwater" uploaded. I am getting older and going to shows like this and pushing my way up front takes its toll on me, but tonight was worth it.
It's a beautiful thing to see Lou Reed's darling use that upper register. It's too bad that the major record labels won't give them their due here in America. Rolling Stone snubs them and SNL will never let them on stage, all because they blazed their own path to a wider audience without a major record label. They truly deserve better than that.
I feel ya bro...my words exactly...I honestly feel my eyes sting when she sings that part; but I'm guessing it's the frequency of the notes? It feels sad, yet powerful at the same time...I can listen to that song all day without tiring of it... cheers bro... 🙏🕉

I lost my sister to suicide she took her life. This song i love so much. I read between the lines and i find my sister. And i get breathless and dream .
Im breathing under water with my.little sister.. Heres mine now. My little sister came in after playing for hours. In her hand she held a bouquet of flowers she picked them on the hill behind the shack gave the flowers to moma then went running back. Glorinimex Canada "They" DO play it on American radio. That's where I first heard it....a Seattle alternative radio station, KNDD. I stopped in my tracks when this song came on.......the energy from the band & light show was something to see, feel and hear!
Not sure exactly, but Metric has always seemed like a band inspired by 80s New Wave to me. 1984 was arguably the defining year of 80s music (thriller became the biggest-selling album ever that year, madonna released like a virgin, MTV popularity/creativity at its peak, etc). imo in 1985 everything started to go downhill and become more faceless and corporate
+Martin Campbell Metric does have some early 80's post-punk new wave influence in their music as you can hear the heavy use of synthesizers, especially on their latest album. A lot of people like to compare them to Blondie who were a big part of the early 80's post punk new wave era.
I don't know why it took me so long to "discover" Metric being that I'm in Toronto but I fell in love with the music and after listening to tracks on UA-cam bought the latest album. Mesmerizing music and videos. My current fav soundtrack to life. Cheers!

"In A World That Wasn't Mine to Take".
Awesome, I love this song I didn't know they Canadian, I am too :)
even better than i remembered. woulda been a hit on the radio in 1984 :P
Martin Campbell Why 1984?
Not sure exactly, but Metric has always seemed like a band inspired by 80s New Wave to me. 1984 was arguably the defining year of 80s music (thriller became the biggest-selling album ever that year, madonna released like a virgin, MTV popularity/creativity at its peak, etc). imo in 1985 everything started to go downhill and become more faceless and corporate
Martin Campbell that's a great reply martin... long live 84 bro
+Martin Campbell Metric does have some early 80's post-punk new wave influence in their music as you can hear the heavy use of synthesizers, especially on their latest album. A lot of people like to compare them to Blondie who were a big part of the early 80's post punk new wave era.
Yes!! You hit the nail on the head: they are totes Blondie resurrected
This band opened for Paramore a few days ago and I was pleasantly surprised!
Still listening 🎶 in the fall of 2021💙💙💙
