I was gonna talk about the masterful use of shot reverse shot in the original section of the song but I really love this edit. It uses the sections of the song to match it well to their energy; the ‘oohs’ you can see the emotional transition from knives (who goes from a look of wonder to emptiness) to Ramona (drawing in with warmth but complications), the bridge creating not just tension but the feeling of Ramona almost being embarrassed and ashamed on the situation she’s been put into, at the start of the second verse it’s showing the idea how that soured vulnerability between Scott and Ramona with cuts of them avoiding eye contact, and by the lyric “You’ll take a ride from anyone” it suggests not only how Scott treats his relationships and maybe latched on to Ramona on a whim but sandwiches between that first look at her all the turmoil, fights, and heartache that moment of seeing her in person caused. It works extremely effective as a spark notes version of the movie.

In the comic she has red hair and the author didn't want them to make her blonde in the movie but they did it anyway, that's why in the anime she has red hair and not blond ;)
Because it's a indie pop movie , anyone between the ages of 15-30 at the time of it's release, weither they liked games or anime or comics or getting high , they've seen this movie and have the movie or manga in some shape or form, Nowadays with the freedom of expression and body positivity , yes this would be a box office hit , but for that time, if you were in that minority it was something special to have seen and known
Today is Friday, Sept 22, 2023. If someone had told me yesterday "Brie Larson has an album" I absolutely would NOT have cared. Then I saw this and I was like "Whaaaaat?" Maybe people have been hating on Brie Larson too hard for too long... Maybe *I've* been hating on Brie Larson too hard for too long... I'm going to listen to Brie Larson's album. I'm hoping that I like it. I never knew that she did this song with Metric, and I absolutely love her version. Back in the day, I always thought Scott Pilgrim should have "Gone for that Blonde" - and now like a decade later I find out that she was Brie Larsen (!) Anyway, I think she deserves a listen - and probably a lot less hate. What an interesting and unusual day this has been.
One of the things I've always loved about this song is how perfectly it fits Scott's story. It's true that Ramona was awful to all her exes but she knows and acknowledges it to a point. With Scott, while he was awful to his exes too, rather than admit it like Ramona, he instead plays the victim and as the song says "shapeshift, and trick the past again" so that when you see the story solely from his side, everyone else looks bad. And that's one of the major points in the story is Scott finally growing up and acknowledging his mistakes. Of course, you don't get as much of all that in the movie like you do in the comics, but it's there a bit. Anyways, this is a really great song and I've always loved both Metric and Brie's versions!
IIRC, the movie was made while the fifth volume was still being written, so that element -- which ultimately made getting together with Ramona make more sense -- wound up getting lost somewhat.
@@oldanslo They'd likely get revenue anyway by just claiming rights. Posting it on their page just brings attention to it. It definitely helps them as I think a significant amount of people discovers Metric from this song, but it's also just a cool thing to do.

In the comic Scott broke up with not long after his 'date' with Ramona where they walked through the park. The movie dragged that plot thread on throughout the whole story, where as it was a relatively minor part of the comic.
I remember watching this movie with my mom and I was simping for Ramona the entire movie 😭 Also- Ramon to the blonde girl and scott: it was just a phase Lesbians: Well that’s something you don’t hear often 😀
Well, this was a nice surprise! I love this video, and it's been a huge bummer that's not been available like this before. Adding it to my music videos playlist now!
I think one of the many things that makes Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World so good, is the fact that the director forced every single person who performs music in the movie to actually perform music. Every song you hear performed in the movie is actually being performed by the actor. Some of the cast were already musically talented, such as Michael Cera, who could already play Bass, and Brie Larson who could sing. Brie also plays acoustic guitar.
Ok so i literally cant stand Brie… just dont like. However in this movie i loved her acting And this Damn song has been in my head since i recntly watched this movie and today i played the original song than played her version on Scott pilgrim s v t w. And She killllllllled it I hate her i hate her damn it i respect this chick damn it damn damn… she killed the song better than the original artist damn her
From what I heard before, since the movie was leaning more onto making the live action envy look more like emily haines, brie took inspiration from Misa for her look/costume
I agree but this movie is pretty old, Misa is 19 in the first season of Death Note and I think 24 at the end. Brie is 34 I just think somebody younger would be better suited for it.
This goes to show the power people have in the internet if they want something collective. So many years have passed but we finally got it. Simply amazing
This played in cinemas couple of weeks ago. Entire cinema was full of people that looked like your average people from a comic con. Nobody talked during the screening which was very respectful BUT when this came on everyone was boppin'. Good energy.
Honestly, nearly 15 years later and I'm only just finiding out that Larson actually sang the song herself and simultaneously shocked at how good her voice is. Not only her quality but her control is extraordinary.
I think Emily Haines did a great job on the original track, it's a cool song that's on rotation in my playlists. But Brie's Performance of this track isn't just Brie Larson singing a metric song. It's Envy Adams snarking her way across the stage in all her successful glory shoving it right in Scott's face. This part of the film creates tension that ramps up as the song plays out, building up to a pretty epic fight backstage. This is her 'gotcha' song. Scott Pilgrim is, by definition, NOT a musical. But this one tiny little aspect of the film kind of is. The reason fans like this song is the same reason that we listen to tracks from Hamilton or Avenue Q(excuse me, I'm old). This is a small part of a complete character that we never saw in the film or comics. It was really cool of Metric to release the full version. Because it's not Brie stealing thunder from Emily Haines, it's the complete performance of Envy Adams posturing like a super villain.
that is an interesting take on this. I really didn't think about it this way even though I was aware of it subconsciously. thank you for pointing it out. I have a different take on it from a different angle that has nothing to do with the point you make. your point is both well taken and obviously true. I feel bad for Emily Haines because she wrote this song and has performed it for years it is in every respect her song. then along comes the movie and Brie Larson playing Envy Addams and she sings it. and her voice is just better and stronger. she sings it in Emily's style and crushes her with half the fucking song! that has got to hurt. perhaps looking at it from your perspective it is simply testament to Brie Larson's acting ability. possible. but I really do think her voice is just a bit better and stronger than Emily's. and then again WTF do I know? just my opinion and we all know what those are worth.
@@flirtyguy34 honestly i like the original better. the vocals mesh far better with the music and it feels less like the vocalist stealing the show (I'm aware that is the exact point of this scene in the movie). So I think it ends up being subjective.
@@alaricgoldkuhl155 just make sure you dislike Brie for the right reasons. A lot of people honestly hate her over a single interview that they 100% took out of context. But I respect your opinion and your right to have it.
@@momentarycumulative unsure what you mean but, for all of Brie’s shortcomings the original guy posting nailed it, this isn’t original vs movie, it’s Envy Adams vs. Scott and unfurling the rest of the story, hence it’s critical to this movie and in this case only Brie’s version with Brie Larson as Envy could pull it all off, it’s one of the many things that makes the movie perfect.
As much as I love Brie’s vocals, it’s Metric’s writing that makes this track. I love Metric and what’s actually being said in their songs. This was so beautifully written and Brie did amazing with it.
@Macho Cabrío The artist literally admits it, “No one, including me, could get a handle on what the hell the song was about. I wrote the lyrics all at once in this full-on stream-of-consciousness moment and I couldn’t explain where all the imagery was coming from. It was plucked from the unknown” (from genius)
This video feels like a love letter to the movie in the way it was edited and I'm so here for it. This movie is one of the most creative endeavors in film in recent years while still staying pretty true to the comics through multiple homages and doesn't get enough credit for everything its done still

@@dulpus well i mean.. metric wrote this song. you wouldn't have brie's version or even scott pilgrim in general without them. envy was based off of emily haines, which is why they changed her hair from red to blonde in the movie to make the association more clear.
I remember seeing this in theaters multiple times in 2010 and raving to just about anyone who would listen about how good it was. Very glad to see it finally getting the recognition now that it didn't get at the box office all those years ago. Still a top favorite movie for me, even now as I've grown. Edgar Wright just knows how to make movies, man.
WAY ahead of its time, if this movie where to come out now it would be a hit, back then it seem to childish for adults and to adult for childs, sure the anime/videogames crowd eat it up but those are a minority (comic fans used to be a minority too at least up until Iron Man came out)

It quickly became one of your highest viewed videos, I remember when you posted this a few months ago and it only had a few thousand. You didn’t have to put this on here cause you’re not VEVO, but you did. You truly are from Canada 😂 but I can see how it would help your channel too, it’s a popular movie.
Regardless of what some thought of "Scott Pilgrim vs The World", it became almost an instant cult classic, and same goes for Brie Larson's performance of Black Sheep. Great song by Metric no doubt, but Brie's version also rocks!
@@mdd04000 Sadly I've met many. I also met many who didn't like The Fifth Element, Mystery Men, and Galaxy Quest. Some people really seem to only handle the same plots and formulae over and over and over again. Thats probably why eighties music is still played in retail stores.
@@doopness785 I honestly can't say. It has to be somebody who is nerdy and awkward at times but also cool and somewhat adorable. Cera is nerdy and awkward but none of the rest, at all. Justin Long might have been the better choice back then. But a perfect Scott Pilgrim is yet to be found imho.
Such a great movie. It's worth noting that the edits in the film lend themselves so well to being cut together in a music video like this. The edits are already timed like music, so it's a breeze to take complete shots and just drop them in.
Wright understands the rhythm of film better than anyone. There might be directors who can edge him out in terms of pure cinematography, but Wright edits better than anyone.
For some reason, as soon as the cold hits in every year I tend to come back to a little bit of Scott Pilgrim. Last year we got blessed with an awesome animation as well so, now it's more then just a few songs and a single film
I like this song choice because it leads you to believe maybe Scott is leaving some things out in his victimization of being dumped by her. We already see in the movie how he treats Chau especially her being young and naive. In the end he takes ownership of what he did wrong and thus he can move on with his life with Ramona but I believe he wasn't totally innocent in the breakup with Envy. Not sure if there's more to it in the graphic novel, if there is someone definitely let me know.
Having read the novels several times over, I can say that Scott plays the victim by the time of the main story and absolves himself of any responsibility and wrongdoing. While Envy had changed drastically while they were together and acted particularly cold to Scott (it's even implied that she cheated on him, though it could just as likely be Scott's paranoia), Scott has been lacking self awareness for so long and refusing to grow from a high school mindset that he and Envy, who is changing intensely, clashed so hard that they broke up. It's also important to note that we only see events from Scott's perspective, but we know he can be an unreliable narrator as he has been shown to literally convince himself of things that aren't true, so it's likely he caused even more pain than we know. The important thing is this: Scott has done this time and time again. He refuses responsibility and treats relationships as disposable. His emotional maturing over the course of the story is genuinely touching to me because I relate to that so much. This series has really helped me acknowledge my own flaws, yet I know to accept them and move forward rather than spend my life trapping them in a grave.
the lil montage of clips from the movie really add a sense of nostalgia that was already heavy with the song alone
Let's never forget our unsung hero Clarencito for singlehandedly creating a movement after his edit.

Is it me or Brie just looks exactly like Misa from Death Note?
In the comic she has red hair and the author didn't want them to make her blonde in the movie but they did it anyway, that's why in the anime she has red hair and not blond ;)

I think Brie Larson should make more music, her voice is very melodic

Agreed, she should sing more and talk less.
Today is Friday, Sept 22, 2023.

Maybe *I've* been hating on Brie Larson too hard for too long...
I'm going to listen to Brie Larson's album. I'm hoping that I like it. I never knew that she did this song with Metric, and I absolutely love her version. Back in the day, I always thought Scott Pilgrim should have "Gone for that Blonde" - and now like a decade later I find out that she was Brie Larsen (!)
Anyway, I think she deserves a listen - and probably a lot less hate.

I think one of the many things that makes Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World so good, is the fact that the director forced every single person who performs music in the movie to actually perform music. Every song you hear performed in the movie is actually being performed by the actor. Honestly, nearly 15 years later and I'm only just finiding out that Larson actually sang the song herself and simultaneously shocked at how good her voice is. Not only her quality but her control is extraordinary.
Ok but why is no one talking about how she is literally cosplaying Misa Amane Editx(shit how did people actually find this?).

Brie FTW
Yep. I loathe Brie Larson as a human being, but adore this version for all of the reasons you have mentioned. Must be that I love Envy Adams?

@@momentarycumulative unsure what you mean but, for all of Brie’s shortcomings the original guy posting nailed it, this isn’t original vs movie, it’s Envy Adams vs. Scott and unfurling the rest of the story, hence it’s critical to this movie and in this case only Brie’s version with Brie Larson as Envy could pull it all off, it’s one of the many things that makes the movie perfect.
Literally Captain America, Superman, Captain Marvel, and Huntress wanted to kick Michael Cera's ass

The lyrics are meaningless

I wrote the lyrics all at once in this full-on stream-of-consciousness moment and I couldn’t explain where all the imagery was coming from. It was plucked from the unknown” (from genius)
This video feels like a love letter to the movie in the way it was edited and I'm so here for it.
Not sure if there's more to it in the graphic novel, if there is someone definitely let me know.
read the graphic novel, it ads so many new things to the story
it sort of implies it but it's mostly her fault
I think it is implied that ALL of these characters are toxic and self absorbed, but simply put, it makes for good entertainment.
Captain Marvel on vocals & Superman on Bass. I can dig it.
