Hey there, I live in the south of england, is there a particular species of tree i could tree and grow from seed to create this affect or will any maple sapling work?
I would really enjoy a bonsai for total beginners series. It's easy to find videos about the artistic side of the bonsai, but it's much harder to find easy-to-understand information on the horticultural side. How do you care for it in its first few months? Its first few years? What kinds of soil and pots to use early on? When to start maintenance vs. when to just let nature take its course?
There is sooooo much presented in this video set that is missing from others. The emphasis that building bonsai is thought in terms of decades, not months or years. The work involved in creating the nebari that looks as good as that maple. And the thoughts that you aim for a design 10 years down the line instead of right now. I recently saw the use of defoliation which is interesting, but you briefly mention doing so only with certain species. It would be nice to have a video on that top. What can and cannot be defoliated for smaller leaves and better branch structure.
I absolutely love this kind of content: taking cheap, pre-bonsaï or young material and showing the steps to progressively make it into a living piece of art. I find this much more informative and satisfying to watch rather that taking already very old and advanced bonsaï and making mantanance work or working on yamadori that are quite hard to come by (not that I don't enjoy watching this content as well!). Thank you so much for these two episodes, really great work!
You are an artist, but time is too slow to show us what you are capable of. I wish I could travel in time just to see the output of your efforts. I love them.
What a wonderful adventure to follow. What a fabulous thing that you found your life passion at such a young age, and beautiful early success! I look forward to learning from you. I purchased a book many years ago (I'm 53...book copyright 1976.) I have always yearned to try the art of these trees. I just might try to create some masterpieces of my own. I currently am having success with yearly food crop gardens. I think now I could get the hang of this style propagation, too. Thanks! I "hit the bell". I can't wait for more ideas and tips to inspire me to try this out.
Created my first clump style yesterday. In-fact, I created 10 different ones. Numbers of 12 to 20 in each bundle. I will thin it out later picking the trees I like best.
I made one of these a long time ago, watched it develop for 14 years until someone stole it. Broke my heart.....finally have the seedlings to do it again.
Your tree is beautiful.I’d like to see it in full form but since I just discovered you, I can go through your videos from the past year or two. It’s easier to understand you, the teacher without an accent I may not understand. So I’m thankful for that . I plan to live till I’m 100 so I I’ll have a good 50 years to propagate and grow. I understand you have to take care of them religiously like everyday so maybe I shouldn’t start until after my weeklong trip coming up soon ☝🏽🙏🏽🙋🏻♀️Mia
I really like the level of detail you explain how you would do this project and how you don’t go into unimportant tangents. Also the camera angles are great and show the action so I can follow along easily. You speak very well unlike some other tutorial youtubers.
Much appreciation and great respect for someone who can work with as much concern to the plant as he would with another person. People tend to forget they are living and breathing and react to your influence on it. I enjoyed these 2 videos and have subscribed to check out any future content you create.
Thank you very much Bjorn for your vídeos. The y are very inspiring. It’s great to be Abel to follow you also during the confinement in Madrid (Spain). Big hug and keep healthy
I really loved the commentary all the way through the video. It was a beautiful setup and the backdrop is stunning with the green against the white wall. Your videos keep getting better, music selection, the volume of music, and length of commentary plus insightful knowledge. A lot of us are beginner bonsai artists and it's nice to see the inner and more detailed thoughts of what's currently going on even if it's common knowledge or the basics of bonsai in your mind. I would love a detailed commentary about how and why you are stylizing a tree a certain way and an in-depth look into the different styles and why a tree should be stylized in a particular way based on its growth (especially on how you stylize the leafage so well). You are blowing me away with how well done these videos are becoming and there is no one more prevalent in the bonsai community than you currently. Keep it going!
Wow.. Just watched part 1 an hour or 2 ago and subscribed and then boom Part 2! Really inspiring and helpful. My first attempt at bonsai died within a year due to a pre-mature wiring, trimming, root trimming, and repotting.. So I have been hesitant to try again, but with how well you explain everything I'm getting the courage I needed! Your maple is incredible, can't wait to see it progress through time :D Thanks man, keep it up!
I am very appreciative of you showing this style material. As impressive as some of the trees are you show. Having a teacher like yourself showing what he has done, at a stage where it seems more real for people like myself. Really motivates me to want to strive harder to push myself on improving. I am 34. Will ben35. Started my first bonsai from seed when I was 12. I had a horrible car accident age 18 and I didnt get back into this art until about 5years ago. I still feel like a beginner. Thank you for all your shared wisdom
Hello Bjorn enjoyed ur both videos, we don’t have Maples here in Kenya, but am thinking of doing a clump style with Croton seedlings, ur videos very inspiring
Amazing video!! Thank you for the up potting process. Please please please continue to make videos like this. I really enjoy seeing this wide spectrum covered by you. Thank you!
Learning about bonsai has helped me to prune my outdoor laceleaf maples and other trees. I really want to try this clump style, it's amazing! Thank you to everyone at Bonsai-U!
Yes, the content for some of us is refreshing and helps us to keep moving forward, opening new doors and doing new things, because we are curious and curiosity leads us in new ways. Keep the great work.
My friend. This is one of the best, if not the best video i have watched on maples and maple fusion. I love it. Your knowledge is second to non and regarding refinement i think you are amoungst the best
I loved this video! I'd would love to see more videos on deciduous trees, especially on the development of Japanese maples from cuttings at different stages. Being from Canada we don't have the same natives as you, so I prefer when you discuss classic material that we can all get our hands on like trident & Japanese maples, Japanese white & black pines, shimpaku (includes itoigawa) and hinoki.
I would really like a video about pruning this tree, with more details on the trunk line and branching of the tree including your vision for the tree moving forward.
Just an idea, get a small air compressor. Less likely to damage roots, and will clear off much more dirt, and assist. We do it with big boy lances. You can see it on youtube searching tree lancing.
Thanks for another really educational video! I love this kind of material. Your nurcery looks great by the way! I enjoyed the video's in how you built it.
Thanks for checking out this episode! Please consider donating to Bonsai-U at bjornbjorholm.com/donate
Have you ever seen a shagbark Hickory tree done in Bonsai?
🤞💰

The original pot actually had soil in it though right, not ¾ size pebbley soil, but brown peaty dirt soil??
Bro what time of year did you do this?
damn, youtube recommendations are trying to find me new hobbies
I think it succeeded
in my case
Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. It looks very relaxing, which is something I am in great need of.

This is a man who did not have a misspent youth. Fascinating.
What a paradise earth would be if we took this effort into our forests. Very informative, thank you for sharing.

I would love to see more of the tutorial style videos, like for a beginner first time starting a bonzai to annual upkeep etc, the do's and don'ts etc.
You should start a UA-cam membership, I would immediately opt in. The membership makes it easy to support favorite creators
I'm pretty sure everyone wants to see both your father's one and this one together
Thanks for sharing
I just watched the first video, so I’ll come back to this video in 15 years.
I am a huge fan of the production value on these
i like this kind of content ....would love to see more like this!!
You are an artist, but time is too slow to show us what you are capable of. I wish I could travel in time just to see the output of your efforts. I love them.
Can we get an update on this tree? Would love to see its progress!

The metallic green of the pot complements the trunks which would beautifully contrast the red of the leaves such a great composition
So useful. Love to see your dad's bonsai collection and you doing a video with him.
Never knew bonsai was so therapeutic! Love this guy!
I´m new in the making of bonsai and you make so fantastic informative videos. Thanks for that.
Created my first clump style yesterday. In-fact, I created 10 different ones. Numbers of 12 to 20 in each bundle. I will thin it out later picking the trees I like best.
Your first video inspired me to make a clump, and I fixed a second existing clump today. Thanks Bjorn.
I made one of these a long time ago, watched it develop for 14 years until someone stole it. Broke my heart.....finally have the seedlings to do it again.
Bjorn, your content is phenomenal. Please consider putting some more videos with deciduous trees.
that bonsai looks so beautiful. Absolutely love the shape
I think the like/dislike ratio is probably the best ive ever seen on a UA-cam video, great job and great content.
Great detailed explanation on how to treat the roots while repotting! THX Bjorn!

Soooo young with all that knowledge! Congrats 🏆🏆🏆and thank you!
Your content is always one of the best un UA-cam, please keep going the same way, thanks!!
Absolutely love watching you working on deciduous! Especially Japanese Maples! Beautiful Tree sir!
That’s one of the most beautiful bonsai trees I have ever seen.

Brilliant presentation for a novice like me. Love the end result so you have inspired me to have a go. Thanks.

Possibly the most informative bonsai youtube channel, some great information here, thank you very much
Thank you very much Bjorn for your vídeos. The y are very inspiring. It’s great to be Abel to follow you also during the confinement in Madrid (Spain). Big hug and keep healthy

You'll have a a great bonsai when you're 110. Better get started I'm looking forward to seeing what you have done!
I like a lot your energy and the way you work and how you are.
Just an idea, get a small air compressor. Less likely to damage roots, and will clear off much more dirt, and assist. We do it with big boy lances. You can see it on youtube searching tree lancing.
Thank you very much for your explanations on Nebari World when repoting.
Thank you . Had pleasant experience.
I have a tree I started from a seedling almost 20 years ago. I probably enjoy that tree the most.
That is a great video! Thank you! And that tree is magnificent!
Totally love to see your videos! I love to see development of each of your bonzai!
This rocks. Inspiring, thorough, and educational. Thank you so much for making this available to all.
I found out today that I love bonsai trees. They're beautiful and live even a more beautiful life 🖤
Fantastic content. I did read so much on plated palmatum nebari, like Ebihara maples. Thank you!!
