    I like a lot more this videos that teaches how to make bonsais from the start like the clump stile one than a large impressive yamadori styling that I hardly ever gonna put my hands on, I think that those will discourage newcomers to the hobby but this video teaching basics in an easy-to-digest format are the absolute best, specially to understand the foundations.

    Amazing video, Bjorn. Thank you very much. The most intimidating thing about bonsai for those of us who are "noobs" is how to take that first step going from raw material to bonsai. I'd love to see more videos like this with other species which may be readily available at local nurseries and even big-box stores. Keep up the great work. ありがとう!

    New to your videos - thank you, and by the way. Excellent, concise, clearly spoken, and easy to follow. Do you do any follow-up ones that show the same trees you did the initial work on later when they have grown, perhaps a year or two later? I think many would find that interesting to see where the work being done shows later.

    At last a vedeo for the novice .
    The hacks were great. Hope the poting part also follows for these plants as I find the root pruning part tricky . I developed two pyrantha plants by cutting easily during rainy season . Trainded them for four years till the trunk was thick enough but they never recovered the shock once they were shifted into bonsai pot after removing one third root.

    Well being from Philadelphia it's hard to care for certain trees. I have a Ficus and a Jade w/ 2 Chinese elms. which I can just bring them in the house come winter. But I want to try my hand at some Pines and Junipers. But my main problem is housing during the winter. Can you give my some advice on how I should keep the plants during the winter season, which can be pretty cold in winter. Space is limited, I have a yard but I don't know if I should just put it in the ground or buy a greenhouse . I'm lost at this point. Can you help me or point me in the right direction thanks.

    • @davida3591
      @davida3591 4 роки тому +2

      Evergreen conifers like junipers and pines have to be kept outside over the winter anyway, so you could try building a cold frame to store them in. The main thing you want to try to do is protect trees from intense winds and freeze/thaw cycles, so giving them some insulation is a good idea.

      I live in northeast Illinois, zone 5. In mid to late November I set up a mulch bed with four 2x8 boards on the ground in a shady location. I put my trees in it and cover the pots with pine bark mulch. Conifer foliage must stay out of the mulch. When all the trees are in I water the mulch so it freezes. Keeps rodents out. The trees stay there until the mulch thaws in April
      Been doing this almost 40 years and it works for me.

    The only species that has ever died under my care (multiple times/years now) is satsuki & kurume azaleas.
    I am in a very dry and hot SoCal 10b (sometimes single-teens digit % humidity). I heard this is the main problem with azaleas in SoCal, dry and heat (also, the 7-7.5 alkaline city water doesn’t help neither).
    I’ve also heard they are super sensitive and just go downhill once sick.
    So, I give up on azaleas now and won’t buy anymore.
    But, the question is, are camellias more hardy in general than azaleas in dry climate and zone 10b? Or, are azaleas and camellias similar?

    • @giorgiaderisi
      @giorgiaderisi 4 роки тому +2

      Less Talk, More Delicious they are for some reasons very similar and for others very different.
      Both of them are acid-lovers plants, they prefer the shadow especially camellia’s in winter and both love to drink small portions of water but often.
      Camellia loves to eat, especially japonica, the sasanqua’s are a little bit different.
      I think you can get more successful with camellias than with azaleas (no chance with satsuki for sure, maybe you can try with japonica or indica).
      Hope I’ve been of help!

      Yeah, I heard azalea indicas are heat tolerant and suitable for SoCal 10b. I'm just so traumatized from constant azalea deaths now, that I'm hesitant to even wanna try indicas, haha.
      Nice! I may try camellias then! (and azalea indicas)

    Love your videos! Great information clearly and concisely presented. You could make money making videos on HOW to Make Videos...too many ramble on about nothing. When I was a kid, many years ago, there was a nursery not too far from my house that I would go to when I went on a candy run :) that had a Bonsai patio. I used to LOVE meandering through it and looking at all the beautiful bonsais. It was like stepping into dozens of little worlds. Thanks to you and your educational videos I am, for the first time, going to try my hand at creating my own bonsai. I have a curly willow branch in water, a cottonwood, one that I don't know what it is and a regular willow. I also want to try a wisteria and now a gardenia...oh and a multiple trunk like you showed in another video. So I'm going to have to live at least 20 more years...lol.
