Congratulations on finding those Shaggy Manes and identifying them so well! Such a great mushroom! They sure have a lot of moisture in them. The way you cooked them looked great! I'd have a big bowl of that, any time! :D It's amazing how that autodigestion works so well to spread spores during a wet time - so different than most other gilled mushrooms. Just as a note, the Common Inky Cap (Coprinipus atramentaria) is the one that has the chemical coprine that reacts with alcohol. Shaggy Manes (Coprinus comatus) don't have any coprine at all. So there's no inherent trouble with having a glass of wine or beer with a meal of Shaggy Manes. I hope you find many more Shaggy Manes! :D
As kids, my cousins and I would go looking for morels every Spring with our mothers. We always had a great time and discovered salamanders, baby bunnies and other wonders.
@@PrepperPotpourri Wonderful. Our Mother was a fantastic forager, and it started in late spring with wild garlic, then into summer with burdock, onto bilberries, then onto blackberries, crab apples, hazelnuts, rose hips, mushrooms. All perfect for taking kids along because there was often climbing or working your way into hedges to be done, all at an unhurried pace. Ideal for slowing down in todays fast world.
Black Inky Caps. When they start turning black they are really getting too old. But it you pick some with it be sure to trim it off. I like to fry them in butter onion and some fresh garlic. They can start to turn black before you get them home. I always have some little stoves packed in my truck and cookware. So if I plan on going out to look for them I'll carry an ice chest with some butter onion and maybe garlic and just cook in the woods, I can always find a picnic table or use my tailgate. That's if I'm a ways from home. But if I'm close then I'll just take them home.
I've got some growing I sterilized my compost used 2 dry sterile compost got 1- rice flour 1-water and makes the 2-1-1 ratio and into the microwave then into the clean bag and a few pieces of it into the substrate off they went fuzzy after a few days i add a few small pieces clones im not afraid of a little bacteria it will eat it eventually or make some mycelium in a few dishes to isolate it and transfer were you want to grow it.
You don’t have to worry about coprine in shaggy manes. You are the only person I’ve seen cook the dark part. Always start small when trying any wild mushrooms, anyone can have a reaction to any mushroom. Mine are really firm but I pick them as buttons. They are actually a soup mushroom. Hot and sour or gravy. I’m putting them on pizza tonight. Cook them in garlic.
PS… I know some Google searches say to be careful with alcohol and I don’t know why. Who knows in the last few years they are labeling some mushrooms as carcinogenic and or a person can die after eating a mushroom in China, then they label them toxic, even though people have always eaten them safely.🤷🏼♀️
@@PrepperPotpourri What state are you in? Yes, they are a good mushroom and very, very good for your immune system. Some people pick the ones turning darker and drink the ink tea😝 I think chaga is as close as I get to mushroom tea. I’m lucky I live in the woods and have so many different kinds of mushrooms. The shag’s are coming up sporadically this year. I pick them as I find them and put them in boiling water for 15 seconds. Drain, rinse with cold water and throw them in a freezer bag, just keep adding. Some years they grow like weeds in the yard. Do you not care for any mushrooms? I love mushrooms and what is funny is I can’t stand that type of texture 🤭but for some reason it doesn’t bother me with mushrooms 🤷🏼♀️I can’t even eat an onion that’s cooked soft. Thanks for the video 😉 Since that first comment I have seen people pick and cook them that are darkening.
It looked and sounded quite tasty, really, I'd have served (and eaten) that over a little pasta for sure. Mushrooms are tricky, there are imposters, but if you are 100% sure that you can positively identify the mushroom you've got, they're wonderful... From a prepper standpoint, too, they grow fast, nutrient-rich, an easily renewable crop.
The young Shaggy Mane and the young Lepiota look nearly identical. Only when they are more fully grown is there a definite visual difference. The Lepiota is a "Parasol" mushroom....looking like a parasol.
Prepper Potpourri Prepper Potpourri I’ll be happy to send you a shaggy mane mushroom kit. Just remind me in the spring and I’ll send it right out. Best to plant it after the last frost. How did your shiitake kit work out that you got from the hootenanny?
Prepper Potpourri Oh no! Well, that’s not acceptable. What I will do is send you a kit when it’s actually ready to fruit. Maybe even start fruiting when I ship it. That way all you should have to do is unpackage it and put it on a plate with a little water in a spray bottle. I’ll keep a close eye on a kit just for you. :-)
I remember that Clint Eastwood movie with the mushrooms! Even rewatched it on youtube a few months back. BTW. they ALL conspired to kill him, well everyone but the girl he was gonna run away with, because he was romancing a bunch of them and also killed the little girl;'s turtle. He deserved it IMO.
What's next, foraging pot and a recipe for spacecake ? … ps. this response entirely due to the result of the referenda results ;) that passed by in the election results.
I picked a whole lot yesterday...only the younger ones which haven't turned dark yet. Great fried, sauces and soups.
Hope you enjoy

Looks delicious!😋😋😋
I love mushrooms, some of my best memories from my childhood was foraging for mushrooms. Nothing better than taking them home to cook straightaway.

Yes, now I do the same with my grand kids
Good video. I see these around and think I’ll try them now. Thanks.
Shaggy Mane’s don’t contain Coprine. Safe to consume with alcohol.
Good to know. Thank you.
I saw that movie when I was a kid. I think of it every time I eat mushrooms. Thanks for the info & insights!

We see lots of these around our place, great to know they're safe! Thanks for sharing!
Hope you pick some and try them in a recipe

Luckily my husband loved them. I have not been fortunate enough to find them this year.

I love finding free food. Ramps are my favorite to forage. I am always trying to increase my foraging knowledge.
I like your videos . You seem comfortable and you do a good job.
Thank you
Feeed it to your husband first! Classic!
Looks good!!! Would be really nice on noodles :) love hearing the facts about it. Very informative good job
Thanks. It would be good on noodles.
Which book was you using?
I have several so I am not sure

just add some tomato sauce and some peas at the end. great side dish for Christmas roasts.
😂 you're the Paula Deen of cream.
"I'm just gonna add a little cream."
*Dumps in a cup and a half of heavy cream.
I dig your style.
Can you use
plant milk?
I don't know
Also nicknamed "Inky Caps" AND NEVER drink any alcoholic beverage with this mushroom.
Wrong
Shaggy manes are not inky caps....do your research
Just note: You can NOT have alcohol before consuming this mushroom. PS...We are PLANTING these on our homestead in the spring. Yeah!
I never thought of planting them. I will ahve to try this next year.

What does alcohol with these mushrooms?
Just found some today and had them on pizza
