I'd say you handled that situation professionally. If you are a faculty member, you need to be very composed and have a good understanding of the psychology of people. As with any other interactions with people, there will be unpleasant situations that you need to handle with care and the same goes for teaching environments.
The $200 answer is also the student's main point, even though he didn't make it voluntarily: he simply doesn't get it.
