I will disagree that your videos are low quality. Some more theory 101 videos would be nice but please don't abandon actually going in and doing questions and solving problems because that stuff is most interesting to me and it really helped me in my undergrad course.

About to make this point in a separate comment. The high quality of content here is far more important than any perceived level of production value. And I doubt people who are interested in theoretical computer science are overly concerned about fancy graphics.

Hey, another CS prof here who's been following your videos. My style of videos is *very similar*, and I used to feel the exact same way about the mistakes that were there. But since, I've had anecdotal conversations with students (and random people online!) who really appreciate the off-the-cuff nature, and who say that the mistakes are extremely helpful to their learning. Since, I've come to understand that off-the-cuff mistakes (and ideally, corrections within the same video) demonstrate two things: 1) We all make mistakes, even if we know stuff really well (that helps normalizing students making mistakes). 2) It highlights tough areas and common areas for confusion. Otherwise, students might blow past a certain point without realizing how difficult it is. Finally, I think it's OK to have a "selfish" focus in the context of making these videos, because your passion will come through more that way. So please, don't be so hard on yourself, and I hope you continue making videos in the same style that you have been! I know how hard it is to balance this with being a full time professor, so don't make it even hard on yourself by taking away the fun and the natural style

Do NOT let the perfect video become the enemy of the good one. You make great content, I have learned a good deal of theory here that is normally way out of my league. I've watched a good portion of the Easy Theory videos, and I usually scroll the comments to see if anyone asked/answered the noob questions I have. Never seen one complaint about the "production quality", everyone's discussing the explanation or responding to one of your prompts to comment on the subject matter. Keep going.
Honestly your videos might not be the “best” on UA-cam, there might always be somebody doing a specific topic better than you, but I’m very sure you are the only creator that have covered those computer theory concepts in such a structured and comprehensive way. And that compared to my professor you are so so so so amazing. You explain stuff that take my professor two hours to explain in 15 minutes. I really really like your video. It is good to set higher standards for yourself, but really always be assured that your videos they are already of fascinating quality and I do really love them.

For me, I think most colleges use the Sipser book and seeing a more structured approach going through the chapters and working the main problems would be nice. More of like a series of videos instead of one-off examples jumbled around.
Your channel singlehandedly allowed me to not only pass my theoretical foundations class, but I have a 99% average. I failed this class last semester. Regardless of how you feel your channel has helped me immensly.
Personally, I am deeply fascinated by theory of computation. My textbook is absolutely atrocious and trying to learn from it has really ruined my love for studying deeper into the subject. The content is what really matters the most and you are doing great job at explaining it.I would love if you started explaining the basics and why are they important and talk on several applications on why we need it. Even if you feel this way, I think otherwise. Your videos are amazing the way they are, in fact I follow you and another channel called "Struggling grad student" which is a maths channel (super recommended), and you guys are the most honest people to do this kind of stuff, I personally preffer the way you approach things, seems more natural, I can relate to your ideas while in class...Before I knew your channel I thought of giving up CS completely, because I only like maths and theoretical computer science. Every other youtuber who approaches CS does it in a way I don't feel is captivating for me, they care a lot about the graphic concept, the animations, they are software focused...it f'ing sucks!! You, even without the scripted videos, are focusing on the abstraction, the conceptual and you do it in the easiest way possible. If that is not quality I don't know what is. I hope you continue doing this great job, doc, I really love your videos, and they are one of the main reasons I have not quit uni yet. (Sorry for my poor english)
I think I slightly disagree. First of all the quality of your videos is fine and you explain concepts very clearly. Secondly, I think most people watching your videos are, like you said, undergrads or grad students who are taking a compilers/theory of computation course. Therefore, I think the “basics” may not be so relevant. However, maybe adding a bit more contextual background to videos could help more novice students. But personally, what helps me is when you do example DFA, PDA, CFG, TM, PL, etc. just seeing how your thought process works helps a ton.
Personally your videos have been the most helpful for me, personally the videos you make are my favorite format I have seen on UA-cam. I actually think they are extremely high quality.
Right now I'm going through Theory of Computation with a rather poor professor. I am sorry to hear you are disappointed with any part of your videos because I find them perfect. I know I would not have done as well as I have without your videos. I especially love the examples because they have helped give me a grasp on what I am supposed to be doing.
I wanted to share my thoughts with you about the subject, my friend. Firstly, i'd like to say that your videos are NOT low quality in production value. Sure, you are not making full animated videos like '3Blue1Brown' or 'Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell', but really, that is fine. In fact, for me, thats an advantage. When we come to your videos, we get clean and specific context, super well explained and passed to us in a clear, didatic and friendly way. And they're quick, directed, and it is a really important aspect; as CS students we're sometimes (always) overloaded with university tasks and jobs and your own lifes, and in the middle of all of that, you make content that is both crucial for your learning, not available anywhere else, and soooo refreshing to watch. We dont feel neither bored or exausted watching your videos, and we're surelly not picking on things like video quality thats not 4k or audio thats not TV show produced. You're a life safer for us. Sometimes watching 3B1B gets me dragged into the animations and I lose focus on content, while here, you make perfect videos for learning. Thats another point: in learning, what matters is the content to be passed clearly and accesible, and that you already have nailed. I would love to see introdutory classes on your channel also hahhahahaha I think that is a great idea, and even better if those lean into the more advanced topics you already covered. That said, you should take your channel the way you want to. If you want to make more elaborate productions, we cheer happily and root for your success. But dont undermine your already done work. Thats a trap we all fall into, of thinking we're not doing good enough (OMG CS student flashbacks coming wild here). Thinking about script and editing and quality, and suddently believing you make lazy videos and should not upload them. You make really good content already and you are the best professor on YT at what your teaching, you give the best explanations on the internet of the subjects you touch on the channel. I watched like 3 whole classes on MIT course on complexity theory, but your channel got me more informated and excited in less than half the time. My point is, your style of videos is something great and you dont need to worry that much about your quality. Make your progress, grow the channel and as a creator, that will bring you great satisfaction and it'll be really great to see your development as a creator. But consider to keep doing videos like those you already make. You are really into something here.
The direction you're taking it is something I'm in support of. Understanding why you want to use X instead of Y and why something is important is really good. The reason I even said "X" and "Y" is because I don't know anything else other than PDAs, Turing Machines, etc. My computer science lectures were just - Here's a problem, you can use this method to solve it. The lecturer doesn't say why you should use this method.
I appreciate the videos you have posted. Your videos should be supplemental to other learning materials and serve as a good explainer of more complicated topics. Your CFG playlist has helped me with my studies so far. So thank you.
Dont worry about production quality, I think its quite adequate. Im afraid that upping the production quality of the content might deter you from freely putting out as much actual core content (that we care more about) that continues to be super relevant and useful. You have saved a lot of people including myself who are taking CSC 473 at The U of A.

I think it was really interesting that you said that you feel like you need to make videos for us, and not for you. While I understand you want to reach a greater audience and help more people, I don't think there is anything wrong with making content that you yourself want to make. If its any help, to me the most helpful videos are the ones that have a lot of examples within a concept, for example the pumping lemma one for regular languages as i touches basically a lot of possibilities and makes it easy to solve harder problems. The format or easy-medium-hard was perfect in my opinion. If it is of interest to you, i would suggest doing a basic to advanced videos that explains theory of computation, and then for a topic, basic to advanced examples. I think a lot of people would b interested as the way you explain is consise and clear

My personal interest is in machine learning, but I do visit your channel and see your content whenever I am looking to understand some idea or concept in languages or theory. I have watched your videos I really like them and they are helpful the only thing which is missing is that we are not sure which book you are following because in a few videos(e.g pumping lemma ) you followed Introduction to the Theory of computation (which I really like and I think most of us like it because in universities usually they follow this book) but then in other videos (e.g NP and NP complete problems etc etc) you followed some other book.

Just want to let you know that you have helped me out through discrete mathematics 2 at my university. I was worried that if I fail then I will graduate late, but thanks to your videos I am doing a hell of a LOT better than I thought I would be in. You have helped me understand topics faster than my professor does in class(1hr 20min). Now I am no longer scared of failing bcuz If I do well enough on the final I can finish with an A and graduate on time(Spring 2024). Your videos are awesome!

Also you mention quality, but i follow you because you say thiings in a clear and concise manner. You shouldn't be comparing yourself to anyone else. Most, like me a student. learn from your content throughout college. So you reloading is for your new audience, not old. I think you do great work, but understand that there is a level of quality you want to achieve. but theres that khan academy guy with a app, and those videos are animated and such than yours. Keep up the great up, but don't force it if you dont love it anymore.

I think you can seperate content, if you like doing advanced stuff, don't abandon it completely. For example make % 25 basic stuff, % 75 advanced content. Btw your older content is high quality in my eyes, I don't know about the mistakes but other than that, sounds, pace and visuals are great and you don't need to spend time on that to make it better I think.
Professor, I personally think that it is not about the quality at this point. People generally do not watch theoretical computer science for fun. They watch when they are actually looking for answers. And that you provide the best. You have already captured the whole userbase of every person who is interested in theoretical CS If you do want to have more userbase I would only then recommend focusing more on quality and on top of that branching out the content. Maybe like veritasium but for computer science. If you do want to stick to theory, I would recommend having 5-10 high quality basic theory videos and then continuing with the previous approach. At the very least I never viewed your channel as: Hey, this guy's video quality is bad. I never watched you for the quality but for the knowledge provided.
I just found the channel however I'll say this, I would rather have someone have a whiteboard and the ability to impart intuition than have the theatrics of a well edited video replete with every animation trick in the book that left me none the wiser. Obviously if you have both it's nice, but it isn't sufficient. If this is something however, that you feel conviction about because of your desire to improve then fine, but please don't think that these videos aren't up to par just because there isn't a dancing paperclip in the corner.
Sir I understand that you want to upload high quality videos but in my opinion- and I'm sure most of the people that are watching you will agree with me- the quality of a video doesn't depend on the video and audio quality, but it does depend on the quality of the content and to be honest, your content is quite rich. Even though you might have done some mistakes in the videos, we're all human beings and we can make mistakes, and besides you correct them later and it is still good and I enjoy watching them. However, I don't agree with you on the fact that this channel is just for us. I mean you also have to like the content that you're creating in order to enjoy it yourself because although you teach us automata and stuff, you are not an automaton that reads writes and executes some commands. In addition, you also have to post videos that are related to the topics that you enjoy. In this way, you can start a family of likeminded subscribers. This is just my opinion though. Your videos are amazing the way they are, in fact I follow you and another channel called "Struggling grad student" which is a maths channel (super recommended), and you guys are the most honest people to do this kind of stuff, I personally preffer the way you approach things, seems more natural, I can relate to your ideas while in class...Before I knew your channel I thought of giving up CS completely, because I only like maths and theoretical computer science. Every other youtuber who approaches CS does it in a way I don't feel is captivating for me, they care a lot about the graphic concept, the animations, they are software focused...it f'ing sucks!! You, even without the scripted videos, are focusing on the abstraction, the conceptual and you do it in the easiest way possible. If that is not quality I don't know what is.
I hope you continue doing this great job, doc, I really love your videos, and they are one of the main reasons I have not quit uni yet. (Sorry for my poor english)
I think I slightly disagree. First of all the quality of your videos is fine and you explain concepts very clearly. Secondly, I think most people watching your videos are, like you said, undergrads or grad students who are taking a compilers/theory of computation course. Therefore, I think the “basics” may not be so relevant. However, maybe adding a bit more contextual background to videos could help more novice students. But personally, what helps me is when you do example DFA, PDA, CFG, TM, PL, etc. just seeing how your thought process works helps a ton.
Personally your videos have been the most helpful for me, personally the videos you make are my favorite format I have seen on UA-cam. I actually think they are extremely high quality.
Right now I'm going through Theory of Computation with a rather poor professor. I am sorry to hear you are disappointed with any part of your videos because I find them perfect. I know I would not have done as well as I have without your videos. I especially love the examples because they have helped give me a grasp on what I am supposed to be doing.
I wanted to share my thoughts with you about the subject, my friend. Firstly, i'd like to say that your videos are NOT low quality in production value. Sure, you are not making full animated videos like '3Blue1Brown' or 'Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell', but really, that is fine. In fact, for me, thats an advantage. When we come to your videos, we get clean and specific context, super well explained and passed to us in a clear, didatic and friendly way. And they're quick, directed, and it is a really important aspect; as CS students we're sometimes (always) overloaded with university tasks and jobs and your own lifes, and in the middle of all of that, you make content that is both crucial for your learning, not available anywhere else, and soooo refreshing to watch. We dont feel neither bored or exausted watching your videos, and we're surelly not picking on things like video quality thats not 4k or audio thats not TV show produced. You're a life safer for us. Sometimes watching 3B1B gets me dragged into the animations and I lose focus on content, while here, you make perfect videos for learning. Thats another point: in learning, what matters is the content to be passed clearly and accesible, and that you already have nailed.
I would love to see introdutory classes on your channel also hahhahahaha I think that is a great idea, and even better if those lean into the more advanced topics you already covered.
That said, you should take your channel the way you want to. If you want to make more elaborate productions, we cheer happily and root for your success. But dont undermine your already done work. Thats a trap we all fall into, of thinking we're not doing good enough (OMG CS student flashbacks coming wild here). Thinking about script and editing and quality, and suddently believing you make lazy videos and should not upload them. You make really good content already and you are the best professor on YT at what your teaching, you give the best explanations on the internet of the subjects you touch on the channel. I watched like 3 whole classes on MIT course on complexity theory, but your channel got me more informated and excited in less than half the time.
My point is, your style of videos is something great and you dont need to worry that much about your quality. Make your progress, grow the channel and as a creator, that will bring you great satisfaction and it'll be really great to see your development as a creator. But consider to keep doing videos like those you already make. You are really into something here.
The direction you're taking it is something I'm in support of. Understanding why you want to use X instead of Y and why something is important is really good. The reason I even said "X" and "Y" is because I don't know anything else other than PDAs, Turing Machines, etc. My computer science lectures were just - Here's a problem, you can use this method to solve it. The lecturer doesn't say why you should use this method.
I appreciate your desire to teach fundamental concepts, but I would also like to see more challenging videos for computer science graduates.
I appreciate the videos you have posted. Your videos should be supplemental to other learning materials and serve as a good explainer of more complicated topics. Your CFG playlist has helped me with my studies so far. So thank you.
Dont worry about production quality, I think its quite adequate. Im afraid that upping the production quality of the content might deter you from freely putting out as much actual core content (that we care more about) that continues to be super relevant and useful. You have saved a lot of people including myself who are taking CSC 473 at The U of A.

I think you are very good at explaining things and I can see that you are very passionate about the content you said was niche and very specific. I think it was really interesting that you said that you feel like you need to make videos for us, and not for you. While I understand you want to reach a greater audience and help more people, I don't think there is anything wrong with making content that you yourself want to make. If its any help, to me the most helpful videos are the ones that have a lot of examples within a concept, for example the pumping lemma one for regular languages as i touches basically a lot of possibilities and makes it easy to solve harder problems. The format or easy-medium-hard was perfect in my opinion. If it is of interest to you, i would suggest doing a basic to advanced videos that explains theory of computation, and then for a topic, basic to advanced examples. I think a lot of people would b interested as the way you explain is consise and clear

I have watched your videos I really like them and they are helpful the only thing which is missing is that we are not sure which book you are following because in a few videos(e.g pumping lemma ) you followed Introduction to the Theory of computation (which I really like and I think most of us like it because in universities usually they follow this book) but then in other videos (e.g NP and NP complete problems etc etc) you followed some other book.

I was worried that if I fail then I will graduate late, but thanks to your videos I am doing a hell of a LOT better than I thought I would be in. You have helped me understand topics faster than my professor does in class(1hr 20min). Your video is good enough as it is, it is enough that you gave as many examples as you did for cfg so that I can understand. I appreciated all your help from your youtube video already, but if you want to make better videos from your heart, go ahead, I wont complain! In fact, thank you lol.
I think you can seperate content, if you like doing advanced stuff, don't abandon it completely. For example make % 25 basic stuff, % 75 advanced content. Btw your older content is high quality in my eyes, I don't know about the mistakes but other than that, sounds, pace and visuals are great and you don't need to spend time on that to make it better I think.
Professor, I personally think that it is not about the quality at this point. People generally do not watch theoretical computer science for fun. They watch when they are actually looking for answers. And that you provide the best. You have already captured the whole userbase of every person who is interested in theoretical CS
If you do want to have more userbase I would only then recommend focusing more on quality and on top of that branching out the content. Maybe like veritasium but for computer science.
If you do want to stick to theory, I would recommend having 5-10 high quality basic theory videos and then continuing with the previous approach. At the very least I never viewed your channel as: Hey, this guy's video quality is bad. I never watched you for the quality but for the knowledge provided.
I just found the channel however I'll say this, I would rather have someone have a whiteboard and the ability to impart intuition than have the theatrics of a well edited video replete with every animation trick in the book that left me none the wiser. Obviously if you have both it's nice, but it isn't sufficient. If this is something however, that you feel conviction about because of your desire to improve then fine, but please don't think that these videos aren't up to par just because there isn't a dancing paperclip in the corner.

Sir I understand that you want to upload high quality videos but in my opinion- and I'm sure most of the people that are watching you will agree with me- the quality of a video doesn't depend on the video and audio quality, but it does depend on the quality of the content and to be honest, your content is quite rich. Even though you might have done some mistakes in the videos, we're all human beings and we can make mistakes, and besides you correct them later and it is still good and I enjoy watching them. However, I don't agree with you on the fact that this channel is just for us. I mean you also have to like the content that you're creating in order to enjoy it yourself because although you teach us automata and stuff, you are not an automaton that reads writes and executes some commands. In addition, you also have to post videos that are related to the topics that you enjoy. In this way, you can start a family of likeminded subscribers. This is just my opinion though. Best regards and I hope to see more theoretical computer science videos from you. All the love from Turkey..
