Famous mathematician Stephen Smale almost got kicked out of grad school several times due to his poor performance, he eventually decided to get his shit together and ended up winning a Fields Medal. Just thought I'd share an uplifting story.
It's really inspiring that you didn't accept defeat and will work heavily on your weak points! Good luck Andrew, you will definitely get the PhD pass the second time!
I wouldn't feel too defeated, you have a whole year to prep for the exam again, and you were apparently close this time so I feel confident you can get it next year as long as you don't blow it off (and it's you we're talking about, so of course you won't) :)
A masters pass is still a victory my guy! I'm sure you're gonna KILL THIS when you take it again next year :D Think about how much physics you've learned over the last year. If you keep working at it (and reviewing old topics over the year), you're gonna do fine.
Good to see you keeping your head up my man, nothing worth having comes easy. Work hard and I don't think anyone will doubt that you will pass next time :)
It is what it is. You have a passion for this stuff and you seem to have the right attitude about the setbacks. You know whatcha gotta do. Now it's the doing part. Go get 'em!
I love your attitude towards this news. You got this! I'm currently taking Quantum Mechanics, and ngl it's hitting me hard right now. Your video has given me motivation to stick with it even though I've had some troubles.
You have such a great mindset, if you keep your preserverance and hard work you will definitely succeed! Also, you inspire me so much, I was feeling so down because I was not succeeding at physics, and I almost gave up. But watching your videos helped me so much to take a step back and not be ashamed to start over. Thanks!! and Keep going!!
Best of luck Andrew! You seem like a very determined person who is going to do great things in whatever you want to pursue, whether it be quantum chromodynamics or another field. I watched your videos for the past couple years and it's always great to see physics on the internet. You've inspired me to make my own videos on physics as well, so just remember you're an inspiration to many!
Hey Man I’m really sorry to here about your tough go but thank you for giving me hope and seeing the trials you go through and seeing your positive outlook has helped me so much this year in my first semester of engineering physics. It has been tough and I have experienced failure but I know I can do it thanks to you So thank you for being you and best of luck.
After a non expected result you make a great video showing how good is to receive a negation and keep going ahead to achieve your dreams. Congratulations for do not leave the situation take the control! Focus, strength and faith in God!
I passed the qualifying exam in mid-2014, and passed comprehensive exam in mid-2016. Finally I got my doctoral degree in early 2019. It all happened in NMSU, the same place you are learning. Feeling extraordinarily excited that you are going through the similar process in our neighbor department (Physics department is quite closed to Chem and Biochem department). Just keep working hard and you will get it eventually.
Andrew, really appreciate you documenting all of this grad school experience. I’m applying now for programs in applied mathematics, and I love that you share your victories and short comings as I feel like it’s giving me a realistic feel for what I may be facing at times emotionally. Thanks man! - A Math fan.
I got so worked up when I saw this on my recommended. But that just proves how much I believe in you; you'll definitely do it next time because I know you'll work even harder for it.
Andrew your mindset after this exam is so inspiring! To fail a test like that and be so determined after and being so honest with yourself is hard to do. Thank you for setting a great example for a good mindset after getting unsatisfactory test results!
As a theatre kid who switched to physics and astronomy this past year your videos have really inspired me. Please please keep your chin up and you’ll knock em dead next time!!!
Hey, I failed my Quals first time I took them, but did them again and eventually earned the PhD. One thing I learned was just how much the answers/problems set reflect the faculty's interests and specialties--more time in the program helps you figure that out. It's not just knowing the material, but also knowing the program you're in. Good luck!
Watching you go through all of this and still push forward is really motivating and it motivated me to take ap phys e&m even though I didn’t do well in mech
Bro your channel has grown so much since 2017. Shit happens, but you are super smart dude. Test showed your weaknessess. Build from them. You definitely got this in the bag on 2nd round. Stay grinding
I’m starting my junior year at stony brook on Monday im very nervous since I am a transfer student but I’m glad to hear you being positive on these things and it’s very inspirational and definitely motivates me to try my best !! Keep your head up champ
we know you can pass this man... get your shit together and get that PhD ! .... btw have you made a vid on a comparison between graduate and undergrad classes (like maybe the depth and difficulty level of E&M in grad school compared to undergrad).... i'd totally see that if you've made one
Keep it going Andrew, you will get that PhD, that's for sure!!! Don't lose motivation at all, keep doing what you are doing, you are doing it awesome! Good Luck!!!
Hey i just received the news that for 5 points i failed the exam to join the university here in my city and ill have to study for another year to be able to try it again, i know it isnt as a big of a deal as a phd but i sympathize with you Andrew! I wish you the best of luck and remember that is just another year of your life studying and as hard as it might be to go through it you will find a way and get that phd! Thanks for the awesome videos btw
You got this Andrew! - By this time next year you will be in the PhD path, as well as feel more comfortable in your not so comfortable areas. Glad to see you have taken the high road out of this. Also congrats on the Master's score! that is nothing short of amazing
Hey, Andrew. My semester is starting strong. This is my third semester of my Masters in CS (have in mind MSc and PhD work a lil different in Brazil, so I'm actively working on research for a year now). Things are starting hot as I'm preparing the second paper of my dissertation and also my Qualifying exam (which is more like a warm-up for the final presentation, 3 semesters out of 4 in). Work all day, everyday! At least I've got a scholarship, which helps a lot. Best regards from Brazil,
You have a great attitude towards the results. I remember taking the PhD qualifying exam and thinking I failed for sure. Turns out I did pass. We only had one chance at taking the exam that covered CM, SM, E&M, QM over two days, four hours each day.
I'm sorry that you experienced this setback, but appreciate the bravery it took to be honest with your viewers about both your successes and your challenges. Thank you. Unsolicited 2 cents: If possible, please give yourself some time to grieve and process this before diving back in. You have a great mindset, but acknowledging the emotions attached to this experience and working through them now will likely help when looking forward to potential anxiety around the retest.
Your reaction to this is beyond inspiring. You’ll kill it next time! You are ridiculously smart and now have ample time to iron out the kinks. Can’t wait to refer to you as Dr Dotson, whenever that day comes:)
Take a deep breath, you’ve done better than most and should be proud of yourself. While it’s not the most ideal situation this gives you time to get a deeper understanding of the materials and better prepare you to take the test again. Plus now you know how it is structured and what type of answers they’re looking for which is always a plus!!
I recently got an 87 on a Modern Phys exam, covering atomic structure, the periodic table, and a lil bit of intro 3D QM. What got me was the periodic table stuff, I have zero chemistry knowledge :( Hang in there guy, we'll just have to be better! Keep hustlin'
Just about to graduate the MBA program, and hoping I would get accepted in the PhD program for Management (Business Administration). Keep working hard!
Andrew ma boi, i know how it feels when you think the question asks for something harder than it actually does. Feels bad man, just keep up the hard work dude, love your daily uploads.
My semester just started, it's my second day in... theoretical physics is dryer than I was expecting but modern physics has me inspired. And it turns out my lab course is gonna be all about circuits...yay...
Sorry to hear you didn't get the PhD pass. I know what it's like to get back a result that's not reflective of the effort you put in but from an outside persepective you have still done yourself proud for getting a Masters pass. The fact you were close to passing and knew where your weaknesses were puts no doubt in my mind that by this time next year, you're going succeed with flying colours. Your confidence will only increase by next year as you do more material, so don't see it as a fail, although I know how disappointing it can be. See it as something that'll just make you a stronger physicist in the future. One more year of graduate classes will futher improve and enhance previous knowledge, so you'll go into the exam next year with even more knowledge. Don't stop believing🎶 Happy 300th daily upload 😄
Don't worry buddy! First of all, the E&M problems seemed clearly the hardest ones (and E&M is actually my strong point alongside mechanics), perhaps on purpose. Second, this is just an opportunity to grow and become a better physicist. If you had passed at Ph.D. level, you might have relaxed - maybe even a bit too much. Now you know you need to work and sharpen up. Do that to your long-term advantage and make sure you not only ace the exam next time, but you beat it into submission and at the same time build a solid foundation to do physics in the future. I know physics professors who did just that in a similar situation, and hey, they became professors at universities. Start working on a super-solid foundation immediately so that one year from now it will be a walk in the park. It's really not about the exam, it's about becoming the best you can be. All the best to you, Andrew!
Don’t worry about it Andrew, I’m sure you’re gonna crush that exam next year! Especially with all the grad level experience you’ll be getting in your weak points! I really wanna thank you for making these videos. You really motivate me to learn more Physics every single day!
Andrew, I don't know whether you will read this or not, but I have been in a similar situation with my exams, at the undergrad level in Physics. And honestly it sucks. But seeing you grow gives me tremendous hope that I can do it too. Just don't give up. You are the kind of guy who can turn the tides!
I know it’s hard especially like the results that kind of decide your path to your future..... it just about being strong willed to get through this ordeal ....
I guess you could do more E&M videos now ... im in a first year E&M course and we just covered stuff like Gauss' law so it would be cool if you did some videos on that :)
