Lord have mercy. I've never seen someone live like this and it breaks my heart. As Americans, where professional athletes make millions per year, where we idolize Beyoncé and jay z who are worth billions, where we waste so much money on the unnecessary things in life, it is a disgrace and shame to our country to allow anyone to live in such poor and dilapidated conditions. May God help these individuals, and help us all to be more loving and giving to those in need

mariah palmer Right. Someone please call Oprah to get right on this. She had time to go to Africa with her entourage and do a show on a sweet little girl that she sponsored. She can't be bothered go to Mississippi and do a damn thing... and to the fucker that attacked Haley Barbour for doing nothing consider the truth of this. Mississippi was solid Democrat until roughly 20 years ago. Many blacks AND whites were poor then and they're poor now. I'm guessing this lady lived in this shack while the first "black president," Bill Clinton was in office. What do you know? We have our second but first real black president in office and she's still in poverty. Fucking left wing hypocrite scums.

When I was like 5 to like 12 my GMA had us washing clothes in the bathtub with one of those boards 😂😂 she was old school so she didn’t spend cash for no reason. Only time we used a dryer was in the dead winter because we had no place to hang the clothes to dry. It built character in me. I’m so strong and can adapt to anything now.

The people that post here suggesting that NOT all of the Mississippi Delta is like this should be ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES! The truth is NONE, NONE, NONE of the Mississippi Delta should be like This! No one in the Delta should be allowed to live like this. If Mississippi had any functional zoning laws houses like this would be condemned as unfit for human habitation but republican states will let you own and lease a hell hole and call it a home. This is what the world looks like when there is the ZERO Regulation environment that republicans favor. People living in Hell Hole Homes using wash boards and barely surviving in conditions that mirror the worse slums of third world nations in 2017!
This is a shame and an abomination that should not exist anywhere IN OUT OUTSIDE THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA! So long as one person in Mississippi lives like this the whole State, County and Local Government System of Mississippi is nothing more than a suburb of HELL Itself led by devils of varying levels of evil! This level of suffering being tolerated in 2017 makes me violently ill.

My grandmother from MS used to wash all her clothes by hand too in the same kind of pail. She did it mostly by choice because it was something she was used to and that's how she grew up washing clothes. She eventually got a washing machine 4 years before she died only because she couldn't move around very well anymore, but nothing would stop her from hanging her clothes out to dry on a line- or better yet, have me or my sister go out there and do it for her. She was very hardworking and pushed us to be hardworking too. :)

This isn't just in Mississippi. I've lived in California, Oregon, Washington, and Florida, and quite a few places in between. I just talked to a woman who is living in a single wide trailer with no electricity. Even though her place is homesteaded so she doesn't have to pay property taxes, the county just passed a bond to support the sheriff's department which if she doesn't pay by next March, she's out on the street.
The government would rather pay ten times as much to feed and house this person, than just let her stay in her own home. The government would also rather let the taxpayer bail out banks that have effectively gambled our money away. The banks would rather let foreclosed houses sit idle and rot away than just auction them off.
These guys have the right idea in that they're going to just get her what she needs themselves rather than relying on inept and completely corrupt Federal, State, and local governments.

Very noble young men, but you can't help people who don't want to help themselves, unless you're just going to give away money! People without upward mobility, a way to get on there feet in order to gain a skill or trade, in order to get a job. Without that, they're going to continue to need help, continue to do the same thing that does not benefit their socioeconomic plight.

Im white Englishman, been through some of rural MS,a fair bit of it is like this but not all.Youd get a pretty good reception,i know i did. Some older black people bit fearful of whites but i can see why.Plenty poor white folk down there as well some nice a few not .Is very segregated.Youd be safe enough, fear of police is widespread and you should try to avoid them too.The one thing they do like is you spending money there cos even the stores are run down and half empty.Go and enjoy it

there is always poor people left behind, two kind of people the wel to do,and the very poor,if you feel that your heart want allow you to help some one that's poor, then just move on and let some one else, how can I say to a poor person, wel you should of been rich and save your money--what a cold hearted thing to say to a older person.

What they're doing is great, we have to help one another. Don't rely on others and don't take hand outs from them either. They call my people lazy lol, they're the ones who needed slave's. Stay strong brothers and sisters and more importantly stay focused! Peace and love

^ I have traveled throughout the US and sadly Mississippi looks like that in many places especially when you drive south out of Memphis on the Interstate. It shocked me at how poor that state is.

People choose to live like this. I'm originally from the Mississippi delta lived there for 20 years. I've seen this first hand its called improperly managing money. The people (white and black) would rather draw a government check than to do some work poor choices in life.
