      we were surrounded by goblins, I made a dexterity check and snuck away while the others faught 50+ goblins with 4 people instead of 5, one of them followed me, leaving only 3, they eventually died in the fight, the DM wanted to get back at me for playing it my style, so me and the other deserter suddenly found ourselves facing 60+ plus goblins! with only 2 people btw. So I did what a brave hero would, did a strength check and pushed him into the goblin swarm and I ran like hell, he died, I successfully managed to kill everyone without even attacking! The DM, however, who had had enough of my shit, made a big rock fall on my head and I died, we were 30 minutes into a 4 hour campaign!
      And thats how James Crane (my pc) does it!

    During one early game I played a Half Elf Assassin name Kiera. She had a reputation as a pure professional she always got her target it didnt matter how long it took and she never broke a contract. The other PCs weren't aware of her assassinations as she held herself as a mere fighter who was a bit quicker on her feet then most with a penchant for Knife work, All except one Mage who finally figured it out as the two had become friends and she was pretty smart (18 int).
    The Group had gotten into trouble with a local Baron a major political player who had it in for all the group members for one reason or another. After foiling various assassination attempts and traps and ambushes over the course of several adventures. Kiera received word from a Guild contact that the Baron was looking to hire the best assassin the guild had IE HER, and the targets would be her friends, And she being who she was would be honor bound to kill them all which she would do so ruthlessly.
    The Mage through clever thing that she was, had a brilliant and absolutely terrifying idea. She made arrangements to meet the assassins guild head and on the spot Hired Kiera herself, the target? of course the Baron. But not in a straight up assassination either, the Baron was too well connected and guarded against assassins, so she came up with a ruse, the Baron would hire Kiera to kill the players. She would then do so one at a time till they were all gone and when the time came to present the players corpses as proof the job was done the trap would be sprung,
    Now be aware the PCs were NOT aware of this only me and the Mages player. So the Barons request came down and Kiera took the job. She then rapidly proceeded to ""Assassinate"" each PC one at a time in various ways. The Fighter poisoned wine, the Cleric poisoned wine, the Ranger trapped and stabbed in the back, and lastly the mage another stab with a poisoned dagger.
    Kiera then presented the corpses to the Baron as proof. the Baron was of course happy but his happiness turned to shock when Kiera said a word. Awaken. The full party woke up and stood up alive and well.
    the Mage when asked how said a simple phrase, "We got there first.:" then Kiera proceeded to Decapitate the Baron with a crit backstab fulfilling her original contract at the agreed upon target phrase.
    the PCs assassinations had all been elaborate ruses using a special researched spell that put the pcs in Suspended animation in a death like state. the poison used each time part of the spell. Kiera had the command word used to release each victim from their healing sleep so they woke up refreshed and ready for a fight. and with the Barons death chaos ensued and a running battle was fought out of the castle which went up in flames.
    That's how my assassin with the help of a sneaky mage killed a target and fulfilled a contract with out killing her friends all while raising her reputation accordingly. the PCs were understandably wary around their wine for a while afterwards ;)

    • @lordbiscuitthetossable5352
      @lordbiscuitthetossable5352 4 роки тому +7

      @Nospam Spamisham Issue is this woman was responsible for a lot of horrible things, the slave trade, a harsh environment and was ultimately an BBEG in the making. This wasn't just any old woman, it was a woman directly responsible to a lot of suffering.
      That being said, I often get annoyed with the trope "oh the good guys can't do anything evil, or hey are evil." I can see how that works sometimes, but in fantasy good people are forced to make difficult decisions all the time. It's how they live the rest of their life that dictates exactly the kind of person they wish to be. Game of Thrones is a world that just being a good person isn't enough, it's about being ruffles and determined enough to eek out an existence within this complex and fairly hostile environment. I imagine making a power play of killing a helpless, yet incredibly powerful person kinda fits within that theme.

    • @johnnysizemore5797
      @johnnysizemore5797 4 роки тому +2

      @Philip, John Ryan @Nospam Sparnisham -- I partly agree with Philip here. To me(at least the way i run my PCs & NPCs), it all comes down to what you define as a "Good Person". Alignment really has nothing to do with "Good" or "Bad", especially when it comes down to Kingdoms. Historically, the First Crusades were started by Lawful Good religious Zealots, but The Second was started by Neutral Evil Nobility. Both versions pulled in Good-aligned folks and turned them into genecidal(?) "monsters", but not to their way of thinking. To the Crusaders point-of-view, they were freeing the Holy Land for Pilgrims. While the Old Woman in question was indeed no threat to the Party(at that time, at least), she was responsible for not only the Kingdom's active(i'm making a guess here) non-human Slave Trade but also 99 % of the Criminal activity as well. Sure, you could(successfully) argue that the Party "stooped to her level", but they also gained a sense of, if not Justice, then Vengeance for her victims(named&non-named)...

They shall have their freedom, this way I’ll also be sure that they’re interested in the story at any given point, since if they weren’t, well, there’d be enough stuff left to discover that they could put their attention to otherwise.

      I'm true to the characters I design. I don't alter them for the sake of preserving the story I originally wanted to tell. Characters are more important than the story. The story can be all well and good, but the characters are what make a campaign feel alive. The Scarlet Lady rose to power through her connections and intellect. Not her magical or physical prowess. She did not gain her position through fear, or force. She earned it, through skill, manipulation, and understanding that influence, is the most powerful force one can wield. Far stronger and far-reaching than any poultry magicks.

So indented was that Paladin that he turned on his fellow Paladins and remained loyal to the man that saved his family. My Preist was a priest of Evil itself and used tactics to gain favor with all sorts. He often seemed to be good, but he was manipulating things at all times. He ate companions, horses, things killed in combat and completely hated elves. He was a benevolent rulers later in the game, who was fair but whose wrath was terrible.

    I feel this is the reason a DM should spin a story well, but not plan ahead too far.
    If the players go their own way, see where it goes and make sure you have some contingencies for unexpected situations (generic backstories you can give to any NPC you did not plan anything for, but the PC's seem overly interested in, some base dungeons you can place at any location the players want to explore, even though you did not plan for it).
    The best stories are made by allowing your players to shape the story in unexpected ways, it might not end the way you planned it, but may as well become an interesting saga all the same.

  • @writer15131
    @writer15131 4 роки тому +2

    Though unstated, IF the DM had wanted to avoid the Scarlet Lady being killed along with her entourage, then they just shouldn't have had all the guards go running after a random horse that kicked the carriage. I get rolls were involved, but those paladins were supposed to be protecting and escorting the third most important person in the land. Why would they go chasing after a horse that is clearly not just some normal horse, that was bound to be leading them into some sort of trap, instead of thinking, "That is highly suspicious, we should keep moving at a faster pace, this area could be dangerous"? At the very least, only have one or two of the guards chase the horse to a certain distance (until the treeline or just before he lost sight of the carriage) instead of all of them abandoning the Scarlet Lady and a prisoner?
    I don't know if I missed something, but it just doesn't seem like a feasible scenario.
    I'm also hoping that the centaur village is slaughtered for this. Not because I'm an ass, but given the seemingly racist gov't and the sudden disappearance (and likely death that we as an audience know to have occurred) of such an important figure in that area, there's a chance they'd kill the nearest settlement of non-humans (aka the centaurs) as "justice".

    • @craigwoodward8455

      I don't like to railroad my systems. I allow the fluency that the dice give. I rolled their intelligence to go after the horse, and they rolled with advantage. Their roll was, unfortunately, a 3. I wasnt about to shutdown a creative plan of my players without a good reason, and 'preserving my campaign' wasn't a good enough reason to me. Also, you should watch episode 2. They understood and knew that the centaurs were now in danger because of their actions and took efforts to protect them. (I have yet to reveal in the campaign whether or not said efforts were successful or not.)

    • @writer15131
      @writer15131 4 роки тому

      @@craigwoodward8455 Ah, I wasn't aware there was a second part.
      I wouldn't call it railroading for an NPC of their station and situation to take the side of caution over aggressive action ('course I also don't know the world). Leaving it up to the dice isn't a bad thing, but it shouldn't always be left up to the numbers. I, personally, always consider the type of individual, otherwise a group of highly trained guards has few differences from a group of half-starved goblins. And I'd never fault a GM for rewarding creativity.
      It wasn't a criticism of how the scene played out, but more of confusion on the part of common sense for that particular group of people. Then again, they could have been big-headed pricks who were like, "How dare that horse kick our carriage. It will die for such fool-hardiness." or something. Ultimately, not my game, not my decision.

    • @craigwoodward8455
      @craigwoodward8455 4 роки тому

      @@writer15131 To give you a little more depth and context; The scarlet lady almost never visits that part of the region. She was there for a specific reason and there is a reason she didn't have an entourage of her personal guard at the ready during this particular time. Basically, she was forced to hire from the local systems. The paladins were only level 5. Her personal guard are around lvl 10-15 each. These guys were tasked with defending someone of import, they were getting huge bonuses to do so, and they were feeling pretty self-important. So when a seemingly sentient horse comes up and kicks the side of the carriage, their low intelligence roll basically equated to; "Prove myself".

      There is a reason she didn't have her honour guard (who are lvl 10-15' depending on the area she's visiting) and a reason she had no magical items or was there at all. She had to make do with the standard regiment in the area for personal guard, and in this area they're only lvl 5-6's with a few 7-8's in high places that have responcibilities that can't be shirked for basic escorting. So I gave her 6 of them. I considered that three lvl 2 players wouldnt bother with six lvl 5 paladins. I was mistaken. Lol. but I don't mind, it was amazing.

    I had my players try to uncover and (hopefully) stop a cult worshipping elementals in my campaign.
    It started well they made some contacts safed some townsfolk and even got rid of some of the lower ranking cultists.
    These cultists all carried a little trinket with them wich was used a a sort of key to enter their hidden hideouts.
    They where kidnapping people and tried to use them in a sacrifice to summon Imix onto their plane as some people appearantly just want to watch the world burn.
    Through some interrogation and tracking the players found the Temple/main base of the cult and where about to infiltrate it.
    I had several ways for them to enter the Temple and different encounters depending on wich way they chose...
    They could have climbed the wall on one side and entered through the roof
    Or they could have blown up a weak wall and entered through that (one of the rescued npc`s knew explosives)
    Or they could have gone through the front blades drawn and just fight their way through (wich considering 2 of them where murder hobos was the most likely)
    What I didn`t think would happen was the sorcerer tying up his companions putting on a cloak and the trinket and acting as one of them, just bringing in new sacrifices.
    2 Bluff checks at the door and 2 more inside later ( he obviously nailed all of them with his focus on charisma) they had succesfully skipped 4 potential fights, 2 skill encounter, 1 riddle and stood in front of the door to the BBEG....
    I had to stop the session at that point because I didn`t think they would make it so far and wasn`t done with the Boss encounter yet.
    Of all the things I expected them to do, actually Think and come up with a plan was the last thing on my mind.

    I played a campaign where we went into a cave. After killing some stuff, we came to a fork and ultimately went down a path to a large cave with a sound of breathing. Though we tried to stay quiet trying to find the way out, the breathing came forth revealing an adult dragon, color escapes me. Regardless we were seven level ten characters so were pretty screwed. Then it happened... Are blue (or purple) companion who was always naked and always high walked up to the dragon to trade entertainment for passage. The naked blue man made copies of himself and started playing, becoming a one man band. The DM rolled a will check against the entertainment roll. Nat one. He could have used the dragon's ability to pass but was curious on how thing were going to play out. After two more tolls in favor of the blue quartet the dragon remarks, "This is my jam."
    If that was not enough, two members snuck over behind the dragon to figure out the orc magical elevator that was about 20 ft square realizing saying the orc work for "up" activates it but also the dragons hoard of gold was just behind them. Yep they took out a portable hole and pushed it all into it.
    The dragon was so into the concert that rolls were not even being done anymore. When it was over, the dragon let us go up the elevator and away we went. As we got to a point where the dragon could not pursue up the tunnel in the ceiling, we heard a roar. Long story short, top floor and we ran like crazy. It was so stupid.

    This sounds like the DM should've pretended someone else was in that carriage all along, maybe a high minister or something, or the a queen's representative or family member.
    Edit: or give her an one-way one-use teleportation ring. Making her a a bigger threat. And then she would punish the centaurs (aka the DM punishing the players for their foolishness).
    The party after some sessions will return to the village, but they only see a burned spot in the forest and without explanation have to roll for initiative.
    Because the only standing structure, a stone well suddenly starts smoking and a hissing sound from evaporating water comes. A fire demon rises from the well and attacks the party, fleeing their only option. They learn then that an Ifrit had been summoned to punish the centaurs, with little to no survivors, who blame the party for the burning of their town.
    If they manage to defeat the demon their only loot is a ring with the queen's insignia and some brimstone. That ring may now be used against the Queen. (If it wasn't her death that triggered the demon to emerge from the ring)
