Because the system does not have separate gears, but one (continuously shifting) gear and a separate 'reverse mode' (as opposed to reverse gear), the transmission works in reverse as well, giving it the interesting side effect that one can drive back as fast as forwards. As a result, in the former Dutch annual backward driving world championship, the DAFs had to be put in a separate competition because no other car could keep up. Thus, these very cheap and simple cars were the 'formula one' in this competition.

It couldn't. It can only go 80km/h period.
But the reason they are so hard to control going backwards is because car wheels aren't completely parallel, they are slightly convergent which helps them stay straight. When you make a turn with a car you feel a natural inclination for the wheels to return to center. Often you don't even have to turn the wheel back, it will turn on it's own.
Going backwards this is reversed. So instead of the car wanting to go straight it absolutely doesn't want to go straight and you have to balance it as any movement is amplified.

The commentators you talked about is just one man, André van Duin, who played two roles. The commentator and his “guest” the fictitious groundsman of this circuit (made up by André of course). And every time a car ran off track the “groundsman” cries: “My grass, my grass, they’re ruining my grass!” Needless to say that next day every one who saw the show and had a similar situation started crying out the same way. It became a household “saying” in those days. Great fun 🤩! I thought my might find this fact funny.

The programme 'Te land, ter zee en in de lucht' (meaning 'On land, at sea, and in the air') has run from 1971 to 2008, so they don't do this anymore. Probably partially due to safety concerns, lol. Each time they had different events with different (self-built) 'vehicles'. These car races I haven't seen in my youth (90s) so those were probably already discontinued by then due to safety concerns. I mostly remember the ones where they had to drive their self-made 'bicycle' over a line in the water and had to ring a bell, or others like that. And the versions that were made in the 00s were already much safer than those that were made in the 90s haha.

Its kind a cool how it works. there are a lot of videos that explain how it works. Whet you put the car in reverse this whole system works in reverse so you would have "6 gears" in reverse. So thit is the reason why the could drive mad speeds in reverse. But they where the first popular automatic car on the dutch market. mosty bought by people without enough braincells the steer and shift gears at the same time, And women. this is why there where called: "truttenschudder met jarretelaandrijving" translated to: "b*tch shaker with garter propulsion"

    ter Land = by land
    ter Zee = by Sea
en in de Lucht = and by Air
Achteruitrijden = Drive backwards / Drive in reverse.
The TV-program was called "Ter Land Ter Zee En In De Lucht" and was popular for many years.
It started with these kind of races, on the national race-circuit in Zandvoort, and was broadcast on TV.
The preferred car for driving backwards was the DAF, our only Dutch car, with an inventive automatic transmission.
The DAF had a variabel gearing, called Variomatic. It meant that you could drive in reverse as fast as forward.
Later the programme became different but kept the same name:
All kinds of handicap trails were set up in a harbour in a town in the Netherlands. A different town for each episode.
The handicap trails were very varied, and those are the ones that were requested, I guess.
People made all kind of vehicles to conquer these challenges. Very entertaining.

That's because you have the center of gravity of the car in front of the steering wheels. normally it's behind the steering wheels and so the car wants to go straight. You can easily feel this when you're driving cause if you turn and then let go of the steering wheel the car corrects back to going straight. When going in reverse though this is also reversed and the car wants to do anything but go straight. Any sideways movement no matter how slight is amplified by the momentum of the car and you have to overcome that to keep it straight.
You can often see just how difficult it is to correct any mistakes.

There is something more to that. Those are DAF 60's which is the only natively made Dutch car to see much success. It had a unique variable transmission system which meant it could go forwards and backwards at equal speed. So the DAF 60 can go over 60km/h backwards.

  • @h.rutten2187

The reason these cars flip is because of the gearbox which they call a “variomatic gearbox”.
Volvo once bought a DAF license to produce the DAF model under their own name as a Volvo 66 and they to have this belt on tapered drum gearbox.
The ratio is changed by the with of the split inward tapered drum which is changing the position of the belt to more in or outward of the center of the split drum.
These cars with the variable belt gears drive as fast backward as forward and become very unstable at those high speeds backwards because you drive like a forklift with the steering in the back very for easy tight turning.
And easy turning going full out backwards makes you easily overcorrect and possibly flip over on your side or crash into each other.

    @justusgovaert Рік тому

Oost of these cars are Dutch cars from probably before the 80s from the brand Daf. Nowadays Daf only makes big trucks and these are the most populair trucks in Europe and some other places in the word.
But these old Daf cars are really fun for this race since they are automatic gear which was quite rare in Europe in that time and also this car can go just as fast backwards as they can drive forwards. They are nothing special with speed but it's still really fast backwards. That's why it is so much fun to have this race like that

  • @MrMarinus18
    @MrMarinus18 Рік тому

    1:30
Actually that is because the front wheels of a car are not exactly parallel, they and slightly convergent. This pushes them straight which is why if you turn and then let go of the steering wheel it will automatically return to it's former position. Going backwards though this goes into reverse and rather than resisting turns the now divergent wheels amplify any slight turn that is made.
Driving a car upside down is kind of like an upside-down pendulem where and movement can very easily make it spiral out of control. So really learning to drive backwards at over 40km/h is very difficult.
Also normally the weight of the car is behind the pivot point so it's forward momentum fights against any change in direction. When going backwards though this is reversed and the forward momentum of the car exagerated any change in direction.

If you go fast backward in a car (and these little DAF's go as fast backward as forward...) the geometry of the suspension works against you and makes it very unstable. (and here they use that for fun...)

  • @Yvolve
    @Yvolve 2 роки тому

Aside from the steering geometry being wrong, there's also the weight of the engine with the steering at the rear. It pivots around the front when turning, so when you turn too fast, the momentum of the engine whips it around. The shitty suspension collapses on that side, the tires give way and it rolls.

@1:25 try driving backwards at the highest speed you can go and make a little steering movement, see what happens. Because your wheels are now steering from the "rear" instead of the front, steering becomes very sensitive at higher speeds, that's why so many of them crash, it's difficult to control the car, and they are all driving backwards with their bodies facing the other way around, and if you turn back while driving it's difficult to keep driving in a straight line.

okay, let me explain the swerving. This has to do whit how the self centering effect of the steering of a car works. So I will explain this first. The axis of rotation of the front wheel is not perfectly vertical but at a slight angle backwards. (This is called "caster" if you ask your wheel alignment guy). What this does is making the contact patch of the tire and the road behind the axis of rotation. this will pull the wheels slightly backward just like the caster wheels on a shopping cart. When reversing this effect is the opposite. So even a slight turn on the steering wheel and the force created by the friction will pull the wheel to full lock in a second. Many old cars didn't have power steering so this will make the effect even worse. This all combined with the fact that indeed many companions drove like their dads with with one hand on the wheel and one behind the passenger seat things get out control really fast.

Ah good point about caster. I only know a little bit about it...like using shims to adjust caster when lifting a 4x4 truck.

When going backwards that's a big handicap. Normally the weight of the car helps stabilize it but when going backwards it does the opposite and it throws it off balance even further. If that heavy American car starts to swerve it's pretty much impossible to recover as there is way too much momentum throwing it off.

The small reversing car class are daf cars. They have a variomatic gearbox. So it can go as fast reverse as forwards. The mixed class are normal gearboxes so that is why they have way lower speed

The tv show doesn't do these events anymore, but some small local groups still hold races like this. A little bit of context for all the events that you saw in this video is that it was a race to get the fastest time, and the events with a caravan also had to try to keep the caravan in tact as much as possible, so you could not just destroy the caravan and win the race because of less drag.

That are daf's. This cars are as fast going backwards as forwards. They roll over so fast, because the speeds are high, so a little bit to much steering and they rolled over. Throughout the years, it got more and more extreme. They let more other cars join, because it became harder to get the daf. They changed the gear box, so the other cars also went hard backwards.
One hand on the steering wheel and one on the passenger seat is how you must do it. In the USA you get your driving license as you don't hit anything, but in the Netherlands it isn't that easy.

  • @opperbuil

The difficulty with both driving backwards and the caravan race is that it absolutely wrecks driving/steering characteristics with cars which in this case didn't handle greatly anyways. Most cars used had high mileage so could get malfunctions on various parts anyway. These races are the polar opposite of formula built cars like F1 or IndyCar, where track handling is way better than normal road cars. Try racing a car backwards on a closed road or circuit and experience how difficult it handles. Rear wheel steering is very good for parking but a recipe for disaster when going fast. Nice to see the DAF 66's transmission being mentioned. They were made in the city I live in and the factory still runs today under a different name.

Correct there are also more reasons.
Technical lots of DAF cars were then supercheap because of their bad image and got wrecked at the races they are now superrare.
Enviromental lunatics would EXPLODE from anger just look what happend at the TT and F1 to get it banned.
Also i think there are fewer people now who have the balls to drive in such a wacky race.

    • @gert-janvanderlee5307

I also doubt that it would be technically possible. The way cars are built now with sensors everywhere and safety built in, a lot of modern cars would probably just shut down to prevent further damage. Back then you just had simple cars. As long as the car had wheels and the engine got fuel it kept running and driving.
