This weeks video is a 1950's morning routine that is based off a typical morning routine from the time and also inspired by my Grandma's actual morning routine! I hope you enjoy the video!

Yeah, nostalgic of a time when ladies served their men everyday, had to be pretty all day, smell good all day, put makeup on for them every day and be a housewife and nothing else. Nostalgic of a time when ladies could not vote, had no voice and didn't work at all because they were toο busy raising kids, cleaning the house and being pretty. I would never want to live like that. I want to make my own money, spend my own money and have a happy life with a man who knows how to cook, clean, be a real man who can take care of himself and knows how to treat me equally. I want to take care after him because I WANT TO, not because I HAVE TO due to society's stereotypes. That's true love and that's a happy life.

My grandparents would always get up very early and read the morning newspaper while they sipped their coffee, the morning news or update on the latest college sport on in the background (radio or TV). Grandma would always save the crossword for last, while grandpa would save the comics for last and for us grandkids to read. Over a nice cold bowl of fruit and glass of orange juice, would we grandkids try (and fail) to help grandma with the crossword, while grandpa made us all eggs and sausages at the stove. He never forgot the Heinz yellow mustard for the sausages and mild salsa for the eggs. Such happy memories I will treasure forever! 😊❤️☕️

So, I did a few of these things for my fiancé a few weeks ago. He barely noticed & wasn’t impressed. Then as we were falling asleep that night he goes “thanks for breakfast. It was nice having coffee with you before work”. Omg. My heart ❤️ I never even realized how nice it would be. I may do it once a month for him...maybe!

I would also caution that sometimes they are thinking it but just don’t know how to say it. My bf does this a lot too, I think he hasn’t noticed something or cared then at night when we’re falling asleep he’ll say something small about it but if I gush about him liking it and hug him he smiles and gets bashful and says I’m embarrassing him. :) It’s cute in its own way. Many men desperately want to take care of you and be taken care of, but sometimes they’re not raised knowing how to show it comfortably.
Your story sounds so cute! Keep trying little things that are fun for you when you want to and his reaction can be a lovely bonus. ❤️

My hubby gets up at 3 or 4am every morning so we only get breaky on weekends together. I normally make the breaky and he makes the tea or coffee and it's so nice just to sit down and catch up over a feed. I think men do notice, I think they just don't know how to go about showing or saying appreciation in the moment sometimes and I think once they see it makes us happy they then feel comfortable to do it more too.

I grew up in the 50's. Our breakfast routine comprised of eggs, toast and jam, sausage/ham, oatmeal and waffles. We had a farm so much of what we ate came from our farm. In the summer we would go down to the creek and pick blueberries, black berries and add those to our breakfast table. Homemade butter and dairy cream for our meals. Sigh, those were good times.

So, I know all the books say, often explicitly, to dress AFTER breakfast, but my family who lived through the 50s definitely taught me to get up, make my bed, bathe/toilet, dress, and THEN prepare the morning meal, while everyone else did morning chores. I think that's because we came from farming people, who certainly didn't have a lot of leisure time. My father in law still says how impressed he was with his mom, who always seemed to have her hair done, her nails painted, and wore high heels daily ...even though she obviously wore an apron to protect her dress and kerchief to protect her hair. I remember my grandma also wore a dress almost every day, except when she wore pants for hunting, fishing, or sometimes for gardening. The only day she was ever in her bathrobe was Christmas morning, and she had a special holiday robe just for opening gifts in...so did my granddad.

What I like so much about these historical routines is the peace you can take from devoting yourself to the tasks at hand. Like when you were hand washing clothes in the 1940’s housewife video. Maybe not a preferable way to wash clothing but I think the lesson is there all the same, get lost in a creative or productive task every now and then, it’s healthy. You do a great job, thank you for these videos.

It's what would be dubbed as mindful/intentional living. Plus back then you didn't have near the amount of clothes that we have now. Just doing laundry for a family of 4 can be overwhelming these days and I have a washer (that is moody) & dryer! Lol

My mother always used a percolator, which was a metal coffeepot with a small, hollow glass bubble at the top of the lid. Inside the pot, there were a metal stem and a metal basket with small holes. You put water in the pot and ground coffee in the basket, put the lid on and set it on the stove to boil. The boiling water would bubble up through the stem and down through the coffee grounds. No filter was used but most of the grounds stayed in the basket. You could watch the glass bubble in the lid and see the coffee getting stronger and darker. Mom loved her coffee strong and a rich, deep color and she drank it piping hot, no sugar or cream.

This made me feel closer to my late Mom. She would have been 26 in 1952 and living in Connecticut, U.S.A. She always pulled the bed covers down when getting up to air the bed out and always opened the windows. I wasn't even born then so I don't really know what her lifestyle was like and I believe it was probably something just like this. This was so wonderful getting a glimpse of how a young lady would have lived and gone about her routine in the 50's. One thing though I did spot is that there was no Colgate Total in 1952!

@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 I'm sure we glamorize it more than the reality, but times were a little "slower". Of course, a housewife with kids would have had more breakfast to cook and lunches to pack, but they were not working outside the home. This definitely allowed them to take a little more time to get ready in the morning. If any kids were at infant or toddler stage, this might have been a little less true.

Tomato juice / orange juice and some eggs was common; sometimes bacon if one could afford it
Turns out, it was common to put a grapefruit in the oven with cinnamon and sugar ; becomes caramelized

I remember my nana having the oil of Olay glass jar on the bathroom counter. I always thought it was so classy looking. Nana was such a lady. We flew overseas frequently because the family worked and lived in Australia for years before moving back to the states for good. When nana flew, she wore a beautiful dress, matching bag and shoes with a hat. She always looked like she worked for a department store. Of course this was in the late 60’s and very early 70’s. I feel like the majority of society does not have a clue to just how classy our grandparents were. Many have forgotten what a real lady looked and acted like.

Many folks ONLY take baths 🤯. It was common after the war, especially when lots of people were accustomed to having a weekly "bath day" for the whole family. My mother in law grew up in the 50s and her family all bathed on one day...using one washtub...in the SAME WATER 🤣👌. That's 12 people, all in the same wash water. Although I'm sure they topped it off halfway through because it would cool off 😖. They were in North Dakota. In rural parts of America, it was still pretty rustic. I imagine baths were more common in England (and remain so) as a way to conserve water after water rationing during the war. In the US we were encouraged to use only 2 inches of wash water during WW2, and I imagine water rationing in England was hard too.

It depends on country as well as how big the family was. My mom watched this and said "we would go pick eggs out of the hen house and some would pick berries." They would make stuff like Shepard's pie, cherry pie was huge, toast is correct. The mom would buy patterns to sew different dresses. In my mom's family, they would get 2-3 dresses when sewing was started. Pop at the store with ice cream shakes and milk at the door with the paper. Cabbage soup, eggs cooked with a fish in them, huge ice boxes to hold food so it doesn't go bad and a kid sent to get a block of ice to put in these huge ice boxes. Her mom was always cooking and cleaning with little time to relax. Kids were always helping and doing school work or being in activities in the school. Women ordered hats back then to come in nice boxes with paper. A good gift for someone in that time was a small watch or clock. My mom had one that wound up.

Performing all household tasks, hair and makeup (perfict), festive colored dress and apron with pearls and pumps. Never once did I hear her complain. And like you showed in one of your videos, at 6:10 everything stopped so she could freshen up to meet my Grandfather at the door with a kiss, slippers, newspaper and pipe at 6:30. Dinner was always at 7 and you could set you watch to it. I shake everything and then fold the duvet neatly at the end of the bed. I wait until I'm getting into bed to pull the duvet up. I never saw any older woman do that ever even ones that worked. I know the reason I don't do that is because I literally will not come back to do it later. Same with getting dressed I do it right when I get up. I get dressed, cleaned up and ready for my day right away because after that my whole day centers around my kids and enjoyment throughout the rest of the house. I don't see my bedroom again normally until its bed time or if I have to put something in there or get something and I won't waste my time making the bed if its not made.

i have to say it´s funny how people think this is what everybody did in the 50s when actually it was just the more lucky and wealthy people back then and let´s face it, they have a pretty good life now too. My grandma got up at 5:00, washed up quickly, started her chores while having her coffee (i mean, she didn´t exactly have a washer and dryer to do the laudry quickly or a vacuum cleaner to keep the house tidy) then she got the kids ready that she had at 19 and 20 years old despite not being ready at all, made breakfast for everybody, fed the dogs and then went to open the butchery at 8:00. My mother came home from school, did her chores, then was sent outside to play so she "wouldn´t be in the way". When it was time for dinner, she was called in to be ignored at the dinner table while her parents talked about business and was then left to clear the table and do the dishes while her bother was free to do whatever he wanted. It was also the time around which sodas and ready made foods became available to the broad public and my grandma never had time to really cook, so along with the stress, this surely contributed to my grandma´s lifelong weight struggle. Adding in the fact that nobody in the familiy had healthy teeth by the age of 30. Luckily, the anti baby pill came onto the market by the early sixties, which helped my grandma immensely as she really coulnd´t handle any more children. She didn´t have a choice earlier as the only chance she had of leaving her evil mother´s home was to get married. I don´t know about you but i´m pretty damn glad i do not have to live in that time.

Are you telling me it wasn't common practice to stay in bed for an hour after waking up 🤣 bruh, I wake up at 6:45a-7:15a and I don't bother leaving bed until at least 8:15, sometimes 8:30. After that, I get up, eat, and have cozy pajama time til 12pm.
