    After doing a little digging it seems the only real difference between base Tahoe and PPV brakes are a heavier duty pad/caliper seal for heat purposes. Rotor diameter is the same on both setups so don't go crazy trying to find PPV calipers as they'll stop the same under every day driving conditions! Also don't forgot to hit that thumbs up if you want more Tahiti content ASAP!

    The next upgrade when those calipers go bad is to put 2019-2020 4 piston calipers on your Tahoe. I did this to my 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 which already had the big rotor and you do away with the caliper mounting bracket and bolt the calipers directly to the vehicle. You have to use a couple of shims in between the hub and the caliper so you get the proper spacing on the rotor to center it in the caliper. You will double your stopping power with this setup. I have shoe brakes on the rear and don't plan on changing them to disk as the front brakes do most of the stopping.

    Evening Matt, great video :-) . It still surprises some people as to how easy and substantial an upgrade something like this can be. Very much like upgrading from small front disc brakes or even from drum brakes on an early 70s GM a body like a Buick Skylark or a Pontiac LeMans with rotors and calipers (and/or spindles) off a late 70s early 80s caprice or Cadillac with the same wheel lug pattern and 13-inch rotors 😇 .

  • @chrisp9926

    Glad to see that you did the mod and liked it !!!!!!! I believe the minimum rim size would be 17'' and that's what i run for winter tires on my 01 Silverado. One problem that i encountered that wasn't project related was that i bought my parts rebuilt from two chain parts stores that begin with "A" and had nothing but problems with the calipers either seizing in front and one of the rears literally exploding the piston out of it's bore and taking out a rotor and pads. Long story short i replaced everything with quality NAPA parts. The other stores only give you you one set of replacement calipers for warranty even though it was within the 2 year time table. My truck will now literally put you into the dashboard now when brakes are really leaned on !!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME video as usual and i'm in CT should you need anything looked at or picked up just let me know as i travel to New Rochelle about once a month to visit my daughter who attends college there !

    Also, if you are searching for these calipers in the junkyard, these also came on 05 and 06 "GMT800" GM pickups, but NOT the SUV's. Silverados and Sierra's only. FYI: You should ALWAYS use Loctite on the caliper bracket bolts on GM trucks. There's a tech bulletin about it. They use a lot of thread locker from the factory, and if you ever took off original factory brakes you probably fought to get the bolts out. I did my brakes and didn't use Loctite, but I torqued the bolts to 90ft lbs. About 2 yrs later I had a caliper bolt fall out on the hwy and ended up causing a fair amount of damage. Caliper pivoted down since it only had one bolt holding it on, and it rubbed the inside of the wheel. But at 70mph, it cut the wheel open like a can opener! I'm lucky I maintained control of my truck and didn't crash it. I was able to safely guide it off the road, then I dealt with the damage which was a ripped caliper hose, a busted shock, and a severely damaged wheel and tire. I now use Loctite EVERY time I change my brakes!! 🙅‍♂️

    Just did this on my 2004 Cadillac Escalade Awd with 17 inch factory rims. I used a 2012 suburban 4wd calipers rotors and pads. I used DE1363 pads from AutoZone 18-b4919a and 18-b4918a for the calipers also from AutoZone. 55097DL for rotors also from AutoZone. Brakes on a dime spent about 400 for all the parts

    I did upgrade break rotors in 2004 on my 2002 Avalanche. I think it was Bear cloth and slightly over $500 on parts. 14" rotors and caliper brackets to reuse OEM calipers. Avalanche came with vacuum buster, and OEM breaks wasn't grate. 14" upgrade was the best mod I did for the Avalanche. It saves front clip a couple times. Down side - no wheels less than 18" will feet.
    I'll start "hunting" on late models breaks for my 2003 Escalade.

      @@3rdgenjunkies57 Personally I never use anti seize. Just wire wheel the caliper pins give them some fresh grease and a dab of greese between the hardware for the pads. Anti seize on the lugstuds seems unnecessary you shouldn't ever have issues getting a lugnut off as long as it hasn't been overtourqed or sitting for years.

    • @davidkelp9444
      @davidkelp9444 3 роки тому +1

      @@3rdgenjunkies57 Anti seize isn't recommended because it causes a false torque reading. It's really easy to overtighten the nut. Good penetrating oil occasionally especially in the salty areas and you'll never have a problem.

Found a gorgeous 03 Z71 Tahoe with 69k miles. Extremely well kept and all records. Previous owner had a Magnasun Supercharger installed along with several other upgrades to suspension, etc. Very nicely done but nothing to brakes. This is exactly what I needed. Also loved the phone charging upgrade you posted. Now my Tahoe is ready to do what I need, and way cheaper to own. Thanks!

    On my 02 Tahoe I rid the OEM breaks till it went bad like metal on metal then after I replaced it with power stop drilled and slotted rotors and pad kit for front and rear. Then after the warranty and the breaks went bad I then dropped a couple grand on Wilwoods. 6 piston big break kit for the front and 4 piston big break kit for the rear. I did this because I realized that the brakes look really small in my newer gen Tahoe wheels.

    Same brake that came about on the half ton pickups in 2005 when they went back to rear drums. 17" rims fit those brakes absolutely fine. Want to get real fancy in the brake department? Put on the 2019+ 4 piston calipers and 13.5" rotors from the 2019 and 2020 half ton trucks. Being 4 piston it's a fixed caliper and it mounts directly to your existing spindle. All you need to do is install about 4 mm worth of washers between the caliper and the spindle to center the caliper on the rotor. Problem is right now those calipers are somewhat difficult to buy but that will change as time rolls on. Those need at least an 18" wheel and I plan on seeing if they fit with my 18"s from a 2015 Silverado.

    I have an 05 Avalanche and I did this brake upgrade. I want to my local o'rilleys and got rotors, calipers, and brake pads for a 2010 Avalanche. It was 40$ cheaper than if I had gotten 05 Avalanche stuff because on the newer years there is no caliper bracket. On the 2010 caliper the bracket is integrated. The only extra expense I had were different wheels and tires
