That crime scene and eBay Z embs
Been here since he he got it since action
@@adamgatton lol that was pretty gross and it was cool to watch the transformation
@@hunterkennedy4475 yeah the auction vid
Totally. I still go back and watch that one every once in a while. Very satisfying vid.
I like how you put the rotor on backwards to clean it. I’ll have to use that technique, you learn something every day
I was super concerned when I first saw that 🤣
I almost stopped watching when he did that I thought dude dont know what he doing lol
Haha me too, I saw that and was thinking 'wait i don't think that's the right way....' then I saw him flip it and was like 'oh yea, this guys smart.'
GM Interchangeability has always been awesome. They really think things through when engineering newer components.
Yes Sir!! I got the big brakes from a 2022 silverado on my 2000 silverado
I have c-5 Corvette calipers with ls1- camaro rotors / hose on stock hubs and spindles up front and blazer rear calipers and rotors .
Astrovan hydroboost, Olds delta 88 hoses and 78 corvette master cylinder .
On a 68 ss 396 Chevelle.
Chevrolet defines parts interchangeability.
Nah, they’re just too cheap to change shit every few years lol
@@tclott316 ^ This is the real answer. Its only thinking things through for the sake of saving a buck
After doing a little digging it seems the only real difference between base Tahoe and PPV brakes are a heavier duty pad/caliper seal for heat purposes. Rotor diameter is the same on both setups so don't go crazy trying to find PPV calipers as they'll stop the same under every day driving conditions! Also don't forgot to hit that thumbs up if you want more Tahiti content ASAP!
I have a 04 z71 and when I clicked on your link for your rotors it’s saying it’s not a fit. But it will work
Doing this to my Avalanche 👌🏽
Do you know if this upgrade is the same for a 2000 silverado? Sorry I'm new on the chevy game and I dont know much about compatability with all the models
@@ajg1889 what year?
The PPV pads are the main upgrade. They don't last as long and dust alot but stop better. NNBS Silverados came with 17 inch wheels so 17 minimum.
The next upgrade when those calipers go bad is to put 2019-2020 4 piston calipers on your Tahoe. I did this to my 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 which already had the big rotor and you do away with the caliper mounting bracket and bolt the calipers directly to the vehicle. You have to use a couple of shims in between the hub and the caliper so you get the proper spacing on the rotor to center it in the caliper. You will double your stopping power with this setup. I have shoe brakes on the rear and don't plan on changing them to disk as the front brakes do most of the stopping.
What size (thickness) shims? Did you use washers?
@@ZBrink11 Shim size OD- 1.10" , ID- 0.54" , Thickness 0.155" Misumi has these the part # WSSS30-15-4. These are 4mm or 0.158" thick stainless steel shims. I used a wet stone to take them down to 3.96mm or 0.156".
Don’t you have to run 20” wheels with that setup?
💥Sounds great. 2019-2020 from what vehicle, bro.? 🤟🏼
@@Jimmy_Cavalloprob a Tahoe or Silverado
So, I finally did this to my ‘05. Good thing I always wear my seatbelt, or I’d put myself through the windshield, it stops that good. Best bang for the buck performance mod you can do.
What year calipers did you get?
did you use your 17" factory rims?
I recently did this upgrade and it works great! You don't have to go larger than the 17 inch factory rims since I have those still installed. You WILL need to change your spare since the factory spare is a 16-inch rim. I hit the junkyard for an OEM matching rim with a decent tire for $30.
Hey sir, so are we confident that factory 16s aren't big enough then?
You could always use your 16 spare on the back wheel and switch it to the front.
Ooh, great tip!!
I have a ‘05 Suburban with factory 17” rims and you’re saying this upgrade will work with those wheels?
This was the first mod I did on my 03 escalade. Extremely worth it! Before, It literally felt like it wouldn't stop. After its like dropping a damn anchor
Do you have 16" or 17" wheels? If 16", how did you get it to work? Thanks
@@ChevySS1968 I'm running the stock escalade 17's. 16's won't work unfortunately.
@@AT_motors ---- thanks
@@AT_motors what did you do for the rear? Would the rear rotors and calibers work?
@@mariolevicy3073 I ran stock replacement stuff for the 03.
Matt reclaims hero status with back to back Tahoe vids!! Love this upgrade. Thank you much.
You can tighten the bleeder nut with an open end wrench before pulling the bleeder tube off to prevent air back feed
Matt - these videos are excellent. Thank you. I enjoy all your videos, but the Tahoe videos are more useful for me because I drive a 2001 Tahoe.
I have the exact same Tahoe you have down to the color. 85% of the upgrades you've done I've done. Thanks for everything brother.
I’m headed to the junkyard today. I’m doing this upgrade. Thanks for the tips and new info. The self bleeder. The upgrade. 10/10. Thanks for this.
Really appreciate this video. You’ve inspired and enlightened me in doing this on my O4 Yukon XL. I travel up and down a 12 mile 6% grade few times a week and at times towing a boat. I too often downshift to a lower gear to help slow to a stop but my brakes feel sluggish at times and smell warm when I’m at the bottom.
I also like to add a light layer of brake grease to the pads where the pistons touch and the bracket grips the outer pad to reduce brake noise.
Your always supposed to use some sort of lubricant on brakes except if the pad has that sticky rubber on the back or if it's pad backing plate is Teflon coated.
Man you started me on my tahoe 😂 I love upgrading mines. It's about the same mileage as yours and I've done a few updates mechanically and cosmetic. Even changed the carpet out. I need to do the headliner. They have a suede material 🤤
This video came at the perfect time. Doing the same thing, Bronxville,NY Your videos helped with my 03 Tahoe. Still looking for a TransAm GTA
Tahiti is by far the most popular Tahoe on UA-cam. I love this truck , the story and history of it. She deserves the new headliner I can't wait to see that. Thanks for the content Matt !
Headliner is coming soon!
Evening Matt, great video :-) . It still surprises some people as to how easy and substantial an upgrade something like this can be. Very much like upgrading from small front disc brakes or even from drum brakes on an early 70s GM a body like a Buick Skylark or a Pontiac LeMans with rotors and calipers (and/or spindles) off a late 70s early 80s caprice or Cadillac with the same wheel lug pattern and 13-inch rotors 😇 .
Glad to see that you did the mod and liked it !!!!!!! I believe the minimum rim size would be 17'' and that's what i run for winter tires on my 01 Silverado. One problem that i encountered that wasn't project related was that i bought my parts rebuilt from two chain parts stores that begin with "A" and had nothing but problems with the calipers either seizing in front and one of the rears literally exploding the piston out of it's bore and taking out a rotor and pads. Long story short i replaced everything with quality NAPA parts. The other stores only give you you one set of replacement calipers for warranty even though it was within the 2 year time table. My truck will now literally put you into the dashboard now when brakes are really leaned on !!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME video as usual and i'm in CT should you need anything looked at or picked up just let me know as i travel to New Rochelle about once a month to visit my daughter who attends college there !
I have that same floor jack I bought for $100 on sale from Sears around 1984 and I still use it and it has never given me any trouble, made in Japan.
Also, if you are searching for these calipers in the junkyard, these also came on 05 and 06 "GMT800" GM pickups, but NOT the SUV's. Silverados and Sierra's only. Easiest way to identify for sure, is the 05 and 06 (and 07 Classic) pickups that had these 13" brakes came with drum brakes on the rear. 👍
I did the upgrade too. I ordered OEM/ACDELCO parts for a 2007 Chevy Tahoe. I’m driving a 2004 Chevy Tahoe with Z71 package. I ordered the PPV rotor and pads. The calipers did not have a PPV option. NIGHT & DAY difference! Can’t wait to tow and see how that feels. Thanks for the great tutorial!
What size rim do you have and is it factory made or custom? My '04 Tahoe had custom wheels on it and I just bought 4 new tires. The 16" rims are binding on the calipers. Had to replace new W/ old back again - Please let me know your upgrade wheel size/ Thanks
ATTENTION:
You can now upgrade to the 20-22 calipers and rotors. The rotors themselves are 13.5in. The lines fit right in. The only "mod" needed is to use washers to center the caliper a little bit. It won't fit on all rim sizes, it likes the bigger ones 16+.
was just getting ready to do this Upgrade now, but 20-22 would be even better, how did you come about this info?
What thickness of washers are needed?
@@ZBrink11 .155" thick or 3.93mm
@@ZBrink11where do you use washers?
@@moncayoda The washers go on the bolts which mount the caliber to the spindle. This guy shows it in this video. I ended up buying multiple washer thicknesses (all high quality) from my local Ace Hardware as for whatever reason, the depth seems different on every install. ua-cam.com/video/Eb2b95c65BE/v-deo.html
FYI: You should ALWAYS use Loctite on the caliper bracket bolts on GM trucks. There's a tech bulletin about it. They use a lot of thread locker from the factory, and if you ever took off original factory brakes you probably fought to get the bolts out. I did my brakes and didn't use Loctite, but I torqued the bolts to 90ft lbs. About 2 yrs later I had a caliper bolt fall out on the hwy and ended up causing a fair amount of damage. Caliper pivoted down since it only had one bolt holding it on, and it rubbed the inside of the wheel. But at 70mph, it cut the wheel open like a can opener! I'm lucky I maintained control of my truck and didn't crash it. I was able to safely guide it off the road, then I dealt with the damage which was a ripped caliper hose, a busted shock, and a severely damaged wheel and tire. I now use Loctite EVERY time I change my brakes!! 🙅♂️
Unless you live un the rust belt. The salt us natures lock tight. Lol!
True story - I had a caliper come loose one time after not using loctite and just got lucky it didn’t really tear things up
Good idea. Even in MI I've never had any issue unbolting a caliper bolt so this makes sense.
Same happened to me I drove for 10 years but one time is one too many
Blue or red?
This has been great for me ... I have the same truck , same color , and have been doing almost the same upgrades for the last year. So indeed , Tahoe 👍
17" wheels fit. Have stock 04 Z71 wheels on mine with 07 brake upgrade.
Great to know!
@@lsXmatt Yep, GMT900's came with 17's.
I have the 17" 07+ Six spoke GMC wheels on mine. I also bought a 17" spare, so it will fit over the calipers. If you DON'T have a 17" spare, and still have the 16" spare and you get a flat on a front tire, just put the spare on the rear, and put the rear wheel on the front.
2006 Silverado have the same brakes no ?
@@efrainalvarez9541 06 and down is the same s his taho. 07 up has the bigger brakes
I just did this upgrade to my 03 avalanche and I got to say it's a night and day difference. Thanks so much for this video Matt 👍
My Tahoe is just like yours , I'm head to the junk yard tomorrow,, thanks for the video , keep up the awesome content
Good video, I have an 06 SS Silverado and those game with the same larger rotors and upgraded rotors.
Lately people have been doing the 19 and newer brake upgrade, a lot bigger caliper and rotor and only needs a couple washers on caliper to work. 🍻
I now have a z71 tahoe and suburban since your videos both in the same color lol
Love these trucks, been doing lots of little mods as well.
Guess 20 inch wheels is the minimum for the 19-up brakes?

That is awesome, thanks for the info , I was planning on buying one these kits for a lot more. I don’t do any towing but like that extra stopping power. Thank you again
Man I'm gonna do this upgrade to my 04 Burban. Great video.
After deciding that I would like my Yukon to stop a bit better - I stumbled upon this video. It’s nice to see some content coming from the same parcel of land 🏝️🗽
Being that I already have 18’s on my truck it’ll be an easy swap.
Great video 😉👍
Also worth looking into, I'm told 2020 silverado Rotors, calipers etc bolt right up. And easier pad install as well.
I did this to my 2007 AWD Express van. Used the same parts. Works good.
Currently trying to build mine now. Love the Tahoe build vids.
Nice to see Tahiti again. More Tahiti please👍🏻 👍🏻 Stay save. Thanks from Denmark 💚
Got a daily driver 2003 Z71 Tahoe. When it’s time for brakes on mine I’m going this route.... 07 and up Tahoe/Yukon’s base model came with 17’s....
Thank you for the great content. just did this on my 05 Escalade with 17” rims. Every thing went easy & stops so much better.
Will this work on trucks with 16" wheels?

You can change the shifter from that tahoe. You can retro fit a shifter from the 07-13 tahoe, silverado etc.
Love all of your rides bro👍👍 Great content!
I have an 07 Yukon Denali and the drilled and slotted rotors from sources online are a definite upgrade! Brake fade is reduced and stops sooner/quicker.
Really dig the PowerStop ones
Note: a lot of times rock auto has the extreme duty police package pads marked down to like $4 dollars. Usually when the stock is low I guess it's the closeout price
Hmm good to know man. I appreciate that.
I used rockauto for finding part numbers and just discovered how awesome it is
Great video Matt, been wanting to do this mod, didnt even think about the wheel size being an issue until i saw how big the rotors were, guess ill need to snag some 17's.
This video was awesome brother. Now i can convince my father-in-law to upgrade for all his brake parts to the next gen tahoe for his daily driving/some haul habits👍
Watched a few of your Tahoe videos today and will definitely being saving them for the Tahoe my wife inherited from her father.
Plan on using this upgrade for my wife's 03 Avalanche, its like stopping a cow right now. Thanks for the enfo.
I don’t remember when I first watched this video but from this video I went ahead and did the swap this past summer. Thanks for the vid.
100% doing this on my wife's 02 tahoe! Great video!
2019+ Silverado and Sierra Front calipers bolt on. That’s what I plan on doing with my Sierra. The calipers are 4 pistons and the rotors are 13.5 inch. Great video btw!! Also I hear stainless brake lines make a world of difference.
Only thing I would say to watch out for is the rims you plan on putting on your truck since the lip on those calipers are on the way for a lot of rims
I love all of your rides. Thanks Matt
Just did this on my 2004 Cadillac Escalade Awd with 17 inch factory rims. I used a 2012 suburban 4wd calipers rotors and pads. I used DE1363 pads from AutoZone 18-b4919a and 18-b4918a for the calipers also from AutoZone. 55097DL for rotors also from AutoZone. Brakes on a dime spent about 400 for all the parts
Awesome thanks! I love my work Yukon and trying to keep her going
😊
Been waiting on this vid for awhile now. So glad to see it. I don't remember does Tahiti have hydro boost?
I like the Tahoe content because I’d like to get a suburban and this gives me ideas and info on what to do
Wagner OEX is great. Had mine on a year and no noticeable corrosion. And I'm in Sask, Canada where we have salt and snow on the roads half the year.
Thank you for this. Was considering a Wilwood kit for $3k. I'm not crazy about spending that kind of money on my 03' with 260k. I'm going this route.
I’m actually looking to pick up a 02-04 Tahoe or Yukon to make a bug out truck. Your videos will definitely be a help if I do this project.
One thing to think about. Everything is computerized in the gmt800. Likely shtf scenario is emp. This gen won't work if that happens.
I did upgrade break rotors in 2004 on my 2002 Avalanche. I think it was Bear cloth and slightly over $500 on parts. 14" rotors and caliper brackets to reuse OEM calipers. Avalanche came with vacuum buster, and OEM breaks wasn't grate. 14" upgrade was the best mod I did for the Avalanche. It saves front clip a couple times. Down side - no wheels less than 18" will feet.
I'll start "hunting" on late models breaks for my 2003 Escalade.
I add grease to the hub before putting rotor for easy future removal. I also anti seize all of the bolts and the lug nuts.... that's a must.
no anti seize on lug nuts.
@@jba6677 not the lug nuts but the studs. And what's wrong with that?
@@3rdgenjunkies57 Personally I never use anti seize. Just wire wheel the caliper pins give them some fresh grease and a dab of greese between the hardware for the pads. Anti seize on the lugstuds seems unnecessary you shouldn't ever have issues getting a lugnut off as long as it hasn't been overtourqed or sitting for years.
@@3rdgenjunkies57 Anti seize isn't recommended because it causes a false torque reading. It's really easy to overtighten the nut. Good penetrating oil occasionally especially in the salty areas and you'll never have a problem.
Matt laughs in rust belt
I did the same on the rear brakes on my truck. But I only did the left side a year ago. Now my daughters threw away the other caliper, piston and rotor lol I told them to help me clean and didn't pay attention. Now I have to buy 2 sets of brakes at autozone.
The E fans free up a decent amount more power and help MPG on the 5.3s.
I think I missed what year Tahoe was yours? I have a 2003 Tahoe and like to upgrade like this
Thank for the info! I'm going to try this on my 03 1500 truck.
Excellent. I'm looking for a Tahoe right now. Problem is finding one less than 200k near me. Love the Tahoe content
My understanding is the 2019 and newer truck brakes with bolt up as well then you get the 13 1/2 inch rotors and the four piston calipers.
This is what I am looking for...
I had purchased PPV heavy duty rotors from Rockauto for like $20 a side as a "Clearance" item, the hats are drilled for cooling.
Your videos have been helpful on project Yukon xl Denali my dad and I bought before COVID for 500 bucks we have it running now. Brakes are really bad the e brake is out
Can't believe I didn't know this..had my 04 yukon for 10 years now! this will be my next upgrade for sure

Hmmm...I wonder, this should be a good upgrade for my 04 silverado. Thanks! Great channel.
How I wish I’d seen this before doing my front brakes. On the list for next time!
You are lucky you didn't do what I did - Cost $$ for 16" tires and rims only to find out I needed 17" rims & tires.
Have all the parts to do this to my ‘05 Tahoe. I just went with all new parts. Been sitting in boxes waiting for me to do it. Probably do it the same time I put the snow tires and winter wheels on.
Same here, I had them sitting in storage from the summer. I would have did it sooner if I new how easy it was gonna be.
Great video, Thanks! I recently retired and sold my 19 Duramax that was my company driver. Still needed to tow an aluminum trailer with a car on it occasionally though. Found a gorgeous 03 Z71 Tahoe with 69k miles. Extremely well kept and all records. Previous owner had a Magnasun Supercharger installed along with several other upgrades to suspension, etc. Very nicely done but nothing to brakes. This is exactly what I needed. Also loved the phone charging upgrade you posted. Now my Tahoe is ready to do what I need, and way cheaper to own. Thanks!
Wow sounds like a fun ride. Mind if I ask what you paid?
Awesome channel! I recently sold both my newer cars and bought two Yukon Denali’s 05’ and 06’ gonna do this upgrade on both.
What kind and size wheels are on the Denali's? Are they a 16" Factory rim or larger? The upgrade doesn't fit the 16" custom wheels on mu 2004 Tahoe.
On my 02 Tahoe I rid the OEM breaks till it went bad like metal on metal then after I replaced it with power stop drilled and slotted rotors and pad kit for front and rear. Then after the warranty and the breaks went bad I then dropped a couple grand on Wilwoods. 6 piston big break kit for the front and 4 piston big break kit for the rear. I did this because I realized that the brakes look really small in my newer gen Tahoe wheels.
Nice upgrade. I got 05 Avalanche that I just did the brakes though. I'll have to remember this for the next time I do brakes, LOL.
Same brake that came about on the half ton pickups in 2005 when they went back to rear drums. 17" rims fit those brakes absolutely fine. Want to get real fancy in the brake department? Put on the 2019+ 4 piston calipers and 13.5" rotors from the 2019 and 2020 half ton trucks. Being 4 piston it's a fixed caliper and it mounts directly to your existing spindle. All you need to do is install about 4 mm worth of washers between the caliper and the spindle to center the caliper on the rotor. Problem is right now those calipers are somewhat difficult to buy but that will change as time rolls on. Those need at least an 18" wheel and I plan on seeing if they fit with my 18"s from a 2015 Silverado.
do you know if the 2019 2020 calipers fit on with factory 18" Z71 wheels?
I have an 05 Avalanche and I did this brake upgrade. I want to my local o'rilleys and got rotors, calipers, and brake pads for a 2010 Avalanche. It was 40$ cheaper than if I had gotten 05 Avalanche stuff because on the newer years there is no caliper bracket. On the 2010 caliper the bracket is integrated. The only extra expense I had were different wheels and tires
Thanx for the advice Matt! My truck is cooler than it was originally.
I did the same with PowerStop drilled & slotted rotors and PowerStop powder coated calipers. You will need 17" wheels to fit over the brakes.
Nice job... but ALWAYS lock the bleeder port before pulling that bleeder hose off. That way no air sucks back into the caliper.
Looking forward to doing this upgrade too.
Thank you so much for this video! 100% doing this upgrade!

I have the ebay ones callahan with powder coated calipers slotted drilled rotors and stainless steel brakes lines. They are awesome.
Alot of people are doing the 2019+ 4 piston front calipers and rotors. I have a 2006 GMC Yukon with a Brembo GT front BBK and I want to replace/upgrade my rear calipers. I believe the Cobalt SS Brembo front calipers will work with the stock rear rotors with the right brackets made. I wonder where the brackets could be made.

I have 08 Yukon and 12 Tahoe. Didn't know the brakes rotors were smaller on previous gen. Still the 13' rotors look small with 20 inch factory wheels.
I added 2020 Silverado front Brakes to my 2004 GMC 1500 .$220 Rear brakes are off a Tahoe same vintage .
Nice upgrade! Next upgrade , you should do the exhaust.
Aside from me, you're the FIRST person I've seen hang the rotor outside in to clean it. then flip it around to minimize hand contact. Tip: score some old restaurant baking sheets and they'll catch everything including tools when working on anything that pours or drips.
I do the same thing.
Great upgrade but if your running 16’s like me for offroad rims it won’t fit that set up so double check your rim size!
My 2005 Silverado has those same rotors with drum rear but my 2004 had the smaller discs
