NuclearGrizzly You likely are a wonderful flatpicker ... but this chick is awesome ... and ... good picker or not, you sound like a funny bastard. EDIT - while I’m here ... my current favourite pick is a very heavy polished mahogany one. I also have a bone one that’s really heavy. Always found heavy ones better for flatpicking ... which is probably why I suck at it (even more after watching this vid)

What is the prefer thickness of a pick to use for flat picking? Her looks pretty thick. I heard sayings some use turtle shell for hardness or coconut shell....???

Molly's flatpicking technique is mind boggling. I have been a flat picker for 50+ years and she just blows my mind. I am no slouch as a bluegrass "shredder" but her level of musical talent is in the stratosphere.

"Molly Tuttle is the first woman in the 27-year history of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards to win Guitar Player of the Year."
Easy to see why -- she's fabulous. Great technical breakdown, especially the tips on practicing. No one gets this good overnight. Practice is key. Great job pointing that out. Big thumbs up.

I've met Molly. she is very humble and down to earth. I actually competed against her in a picking contest years ago and of course she won.. but she told me that when she heard me play she thought it was all over for her.. She is just an excellent musician well rounded in several instruments and sings excellently but just does what she loves and it comes out wonderful. And Fil you're right on about practicing technique,, play to the edge and train the brain over and over.. Just how you said it I try to tell students. I love your interpretations you really understand the fine points.

After viewing this video I adopted Molly's bridge rest technique for my (much slower) singer-songwriter soloing and arpeggiating. I think it is best described as bridge and saddle resting. It was quite a revelation. For most of us the brain and muscles need a point of reference with which to find individual strings. What is usually done is to rest the three non-picking fingers below the high E string. The bridge palm rest gives much better control and makes for less tension in the wrist.
Although this is the classic palm mute position, I think the amount of muting is very slight unless you move up a bit closer to the sound hole.
To a lesser degree I also adopted her wrist technique for strumming. It is especially helpful in an arpeggiated strum for the same reason you're talking about of needing a point of reference to find individual strings.
The only thing greater than her knock out playing is her generosity in sharing the details of her technique.
Thanks for your work man. In the tradition of Pegasus it is always inspirational!

I'm a vocalist, and have never played a guitar, but I love watching and listening to your analysis, because you do such a great job of breaking down the techniques that you see. And your advice on rehearsing and developing muscle memory applies equally to learning vocal music, in much the same way as learning to play a song. I also like that you spend time analyzing what you see and hear, rather than just the (mostly) empty reactions on most reaction videos.

Fil, this phenomenon is about more than technique. That is a Townes Van Zandt song, a piece of music written by a genius destroyed by his addictions. This manifestation by Molly Tuttle is a signal of recovery and rebirth. So very important, unbelievably so. A whole group of people brought low by opiods are being called to, and urged to arise and shake off that weight. TVZ used to play at the Cactus Cafe at UT Austin, he died just before I arrived in Austin but I knew people who had seen him, and one who knew him very well. Oh, such sweet joy to hear this young woman's voice and music.

I like what you said about learning slowly here. I used to teach classes on Buddhist meditation and how to develop virtues like kindness, patience and compassion, and i would share the same thing with my students. I called it "the power of familiarity", and i used to say that this is how we learn anything in any field of life, and that spiritual virtues are exactly the same.
No one suddenly becomes patient or kindhearted overnight, and just because you find it difficult to be like that now doesn't mean you aren't that kind of person.
I would remind them of how a baby learns to walk or talk, There is a lot of falling down and nonsense babbling at first, but in the end it always becomes so second nature to us that now we don't have to give any thought to it at all!
There is a point where the body and mind work together so well that we can do things without having to plan it out. All we do is to apply the intention and it happens!
Watch a good athlete, a martial artist, a dancer, etc., and you can see this in action.
So why do we think spiritual values would be any different?
Anyway, sorry if that sounds "preachy" in any way. I enjoy your videos and am always amazed by the talents that you introduce us to. It helps me to enjoy these musicians even more when i see how dedicated and proficient they have become.

Billy told the interviewer "Remember the name Molly Tuttle. She's going places. She recently flew home from a tour of Sweden, 18 hours of traveling. She went to her room and started practicing." Molly just won her second Grammy Award, Best Bluegrass album for "City of Gold."

Great video, something I learned many years ago that can be applied to the muscle memory concept are the three stages of learning.
The three stages of learning are: cognitive stage, associative stage, and autonomous stage.
This is often spoken about with motor learning for sports but it definitely applies to any motor skill including musical performance.

Oh my God, this is about the first time ever I've had a celebrity crush or what have you, being 26 years old. I just can't help but binge on her records, live performances, interviews, been a few weeks now and I can't hold back haha, I even switched from my typical blues playing to learning bluegrass

She's a great picker!! Reminds me of when I'd go to Tennessee in my teens. When there people would sit out on the front porch and pick away. The people I saw there sounded good enough for a studio but many did it for fun and unity. Love this vlog. Keep kicking it and picking it. Peace.

I can't thank you enough for the exposure to new music you introduce me to. I'm over 50 and have been blown away by some things your videos display and knowledge you give. That being said. This woman is incredible and the duel screen really shows her picking like a genius!

Such a helpful analysis of Molly Tuttle's demonstration performance. Molly did a very clear teaching video about cross-picking on the Guitar World channel. It's an excellent illustration of the point Fil emphasises about learning slowly and building up.

I love bluegrass and acoustic music. I worked with Bluegrass bands for about 8 years. While i still enjoy Rock, this type of music there is no where to hide any mistakes, its all out there.. Rockers have distortion, overdrive etc easier to hide a flub

She's doin' her own thing now. Moved from the Bay Area to Nashville like she shoulda. She's blowin' up here too. Saw her play on 4-3 in a club in Nashville, the Wednesday night crowd there beat out any weekend show I've ever seen there.

My wrist does NOT DO THAT!! dammit. That is one limber wrist. Man she's got skill like Steve Morse! haha oooooh, this is a Troy Grady interview. Cuz he's all about the forensics of picking.
She had Paul Gilbert fingers, dammit. hehehe I was able to play that maj to maj 6 lick.... using THREE FINGERS of my picking hand. :( She is preeeeetty darn good at picking. Looks like she's doing inside and outside picking. Nice explanations, also, Fil. The muting seems to be pretty soft when she plays else it'd tie her hand too much, I think.

There is no muting involved. When you have that type of accuracy, only the strings you intend are going to sound.
