Billy’s singing sounded so much like Doc Watson that if you closed your eyes and just listened you could almost swear old Doc was still alive. And Marcus’ playing was spot on, great job by both young men. ❤️🤘✌️😎
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Fil, you've nailed it again. I've left the world of image-based, highly produced modern music behind for the most part. Artists who have mastered their craft to the point where they can perform anywhere live with such skill that people lean in and listen intently are where it's at. Both of these artists are just oozing with talent that just flows out of them.
Just so know, these videos you’re doing are having an effect.. Spent the last hour listening to Marcus King, the gift of a newer artist that almost feels like I dipped into a jar of some memory filled honey, he’s on my playlist now❣️ Thank you🇨🇦
"A town of Blues with a Jazz river running through it" That's perfect. I would have never expected to see these two guys together , from different worlds (or so I thought)
This is like making a random stop at a Guitar Center store in Los Angeles and finding your musical hero trying out some vintage instruments, and witnessing a magical moment! I had no interest in the description of this video, but it was Fil analyzing someone I may have heard of, but, really... I clicked on it anyway, because it's Fil and OMG! These guys are truly great! The song, Summertime is a classic, Done by nearly everyone, mostly mediocrely. I've heard performed personally, live, by Janis Joplin so I know what great is, and I think these guys were also GREAT! Thanks, Fil, for bringing this to us.
Relaxing, and quiet, playing an old genre of music, in which i have heard in a movie, and by other early blues artists, it never gets old.... It's so nice Filip when you switch it up, makes your channel so interesting, you reallyyyyyy know how to break down an artist, to make all of your viewers wanting to come back for more! 47, 0090, and counting, yeah! As always, fabulous analysis!
@@wingsofpegasus Would be nice if you and Billy could do a filmed interview. Since your perspicacity for music is so deep it would make the interview all the more richer.
I just discovered Billy Strings recently. He is an incredible player. I love your analysis. Keep introducing such a wide variety of musicians. It's great to discover and rediscover different musicians. Thanks
These two young men are unquestionably greatly talented musically but for me what is most important is that they have deeply absorbed so much of American music and culture and that they are now renewing and transmitting that music and culture. You can see and feel how much they have given themselves to the music. May their light keep shining for many years.
I'm a fan of both of them and it was wonderful to see them play together, I just hope that each of them gets that big break that can propel them to the top! I was laughing as you were describing Marcus's Style as a town of Blues with a river of jazz running through it😃👍
They are doing two shows together the last weekend of april / first weekend in May in New Orleans at a music festival and I hope and expect they will be streamed.
I see Billy String's and I can't hit like fast enough. I had never heard of Marcus. I will have to check out some of his stuff because this was fantastic!
Look up Merle Haggard's "Swinging Doors" at Carter's by Marcus. Mind blowing. Completely unique style of his own, unique guitar phrasing, unique timing, and THAT VOICE. Genius. Billy Strings is beyond fantastically good also. If I stumbled upon this happening, I would weep for joy and hope they did not go too long as I would starve to death rather than leave and miss a moment.
The lines Marcus is playing are crazy but, the vocals on Billy are so great and you're right the vocals are what you wouldn't expect to come from Billy .👍love the vintage mics.
I love watching you get excited about what you’re watching. You clearly love the music and playing you see as do I but it’s always fun to see someone excited. Marcus king and guy king are 2 singer/guitar players I’m most exited about for the future of southern music and blues/rock guitar playing. Like I’ve said in the past regarding vibrato and articulation is “if we can’t feel it we don’t care” Rock/blues playing is really telling a musical story and it needs to be interesting. This song puts me in a Chicago jazz club in 1949 with a Cuban cigar in hand and a bourbon on the rocks sweating on the table. This is just classic American smoky jazz/blues. This is advanced playing so if my students don’t find this video for learning then this is advanced stuff I don’t show for a year or so. I love Marcus kings voice and the first time I watched this I kept expecting him to sing at any moment and he never does but after you listen to the style of the song it’s not really meant for a singer like him but Marcus is such a great guitar player he doesn’t miss a beat in his playing at all. His tele tone here is my favorite tele sound where it’s almost like popping glass and not the usual “honk” or “tele twang” this song just oozes atmosphere and I love a song that can put me in a special time or place when I hear it. This version is truly special and that “other guy” ain’t half bad either. Strings, Marcus king and especially guy king for those who’ve never heard him before are musicians worth checking out. In the movie almost famous there’s a scene with Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character speaks about the art of the “beautiful” and that it never lasts. Marcus isn’t gonna win any awards for looking good and being in shape but when it comes to a legacy for future generations he’ll inspire more players and singers than lady Gaga who has producers and writers for her “art” whereas Marcus writes, sings, plays, and feels every aspect of it. His art will last. ~Nothing wrong with lady Gaga btw, just using her as an example~ Disclaimer for the easily and stupidly offended. 😜

It was beat up pretty bad, but was setup great. It played beautifully and sounded even better. That place has everything you can think of to grab off of the wall and pick. Thanks Fil. Should of known you were on to Billy. Two classic guitars played by two classy young artist.... BGC artist is so underappreciated, it was Billy's Stepdad that gave him an appreciation for the art form but you can't give anyone the natural talent that rose in this young lad. It's a rebirth for sure.
Fil, _please_ do more jazz/swing stuff. Billy's voice is perfect for Summertime - wow, and that old Martin sounds like pure gold. Probably worth it's weight in gold, a 1936!
Crikey Fil, it’s like you’ve seen my playlist lately with all the great artists you are reacting too! Another excellent breakdown, and thank you for showcasing some of the lesser known (in the UK) talent......Now do another Warning reaction!!!
I don't even play guitar because I can't but I appreciate it so much and I love your analysis you are the absolute best at communicating with your listeners .
You know how they call Eric Clapton "Slowhand?" This was so delicate, nuanced, relaxed, apparently effortless for them. They just don't have to play 1,000mph to melt your face.
Tahoe Mike You’re absolutely right that don’t have to, but they surely can. Check out Billy shredding Little Maggie with Molly Tuttle ua-cam.com/video/ovC1jULtcMM/v-deo.html
"Slowhand" was not a compliment. It was an insult. Look it up! "Slowhand" was a British term for a type of clapping that the crowd did when they were annoyed (similar to Boo'ing someone). Clapton had a habit of fiddling with--up to and including--setting up his guitars and restringing ON STAGE, during the show! When he did this the band and crowd would clap in the "slowhand" fashion. His nickname, "Slowhand", was originally a reference to this. It is the equivalent of calling someone who had been "booed", "Boo!"
Very impressive. What amazes me is the maturity and skill and nuance from so many talented young musicians. They sound seasoned way beyond their years. Colombian keyboard virtuoso Jesus Molina also comes to mind.
Marcus has an incredible blues voice and is a great guitarist with a great band. Very cool to see young cats like these two keeping the blues alive.👍😎🤘 Pop music sucks!

Great choice Fil! Love them both.
I don't even play guitar because I can't but I appreciate it so much and I love your analysis you are the absolute best at communicating with your listeners .
Thanks!
If you haven't seen it, their cover of "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" from the same session is amazing.
You're reviews are so ear opening to me. I love your break downs. I wish I was 15 and looking for a teacher.
🙂👍
Thanks for intro to Marcus king. Googled and enjoyed a lot! Usually go for Irish Scott’s and British. Nice stuff
You know how they call Eric Clapton "Slowhand?" This was so delicate, nuanced, relaxed, apparently effortless for them. They just don't have to play 1,000mph to melt your face.
👍
Tahoe Mike You’re absolutely right that don’t have to, but they surely can. Check out Billy shredding Little Maggie with Molly Tuttle

Excellent examples here of the craft brother...Ty
Marcus has an incredible blues voice and is a great guitarist with a great band. Very cool to see young cats like these two keeping the blues alive.👍😎🤘
Pop music sucks!
OUTSTANDING!!!
Love bluegrass! ! So glad I found these ...Billy strings with his dad is a great one to watch
These guys are absolutely golden...Woow.
