This moment could last 20 minutes or longer. It would not get boring. Never get tired of listening to it. One of the greatest moment in Yes music. The guitar melody... the groove! The Moog. timeless! Goosebumps! Best regards from germany
The 79 chicagoes? I won't exactly throw Badgers Tony Kaye in the trash either; I rile up pretty bad across di fferent buzz/orgasm but the Yessongs is seriously set-aside indeed
James Bruce Parallel chord structures on the guitar . Simple and perfect. Just what needed to be there. Rick’s minimoog d solo and ominous string synth. OMG
Yes really should have released this as a single. One of the most amazing pieces of live music I've heard during my 52 years on this planet. Elements are found in so many other songs, most recently listen to the new Jeep commercial now airing on TV the last couple of measures of this song are right from this piece music. I'm sure we can find were YES got the inspiration for this piece searching through Classical music archives!
@@eileenfinnan4842 Did X 10 YES Shows and heard TROOPER x 5 Live. Closed x 3 of my Shows. Still my # 1 YES Show was there TALES/CTTE Show on 2/16/74 @ the Spectrum PHILLY PA. Music Memories due last forever!!
Greatest ending of all time. Wakeman and Howe nail it. There's even a vocal harmony doubling the feedback at the very end. Who does that, oh yeah, YES!!!
I got down when I heard Wurm on Yessongs..(around16 y.o.on1974) And believe me as a Yes fan, I was expecting something like that but the magistral and respectful way in wich Wakeman overcame Kaye on the keyboards solo, was really out of this world..Thanks for the memories.. Friendly greetings

I always go to this when a younger person asks me what to listen to. I was dating a musician in high school when I heard this. Many years later still love this.
Rolling down the A1(M) with my wonderful fiancee listening to this music. Years ago. Blew her out. What a permanent wonderful memory of mind blowing music.
Thank you Mr. Howe for holding onto this masterpiece. How the band he played for prior to Yes couldn't find a place for this is beyond me. Regardless, it all worked out in the end.
I bought an LP which had this song on it about a year ago, but only 2 weeks ago I listened to the last song on it. this song. When I heard this part I.. I nearly cried of joy.. somehow it feels like Tame Impala but with a 70's feel mixed into it.
Studio version or live version....doesn't matter....when Howe goes into his solo, it literally snags the breath right outta me. Chills. Has done so, for decades. I always think of warriors, fighting to save their existence from some dark evil force and this part of the song is when the underdog comes back to strike a final blow that obliterates the bad guys.
First concert. Can you fucken imagine? I'd never heard anything like it, and haven't since "Tales of Topographic Oceans". A bomb after the masterful Yessongs era stuff. Their concert approach was to highlight each skilled musician throughout the show!
Echoing many of the comments below. The one piece on this album I always make sure to listen to. Howe, Wakeman, yes, of course. But that mellotron (is it Anderson playing that?). And finally, Alan White - incredible groove and fills. They were never better than right here.
I remember the first time I heard this song (NAS Memphis 1974). I saw them twice, but they never played it. I guess I'm glad, my head would probably have exploded.
I saw their show in Long Beach in 73’ and witnessed the incredible performance of “Wurm” with Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe’s call and respond with guitar and synthesizer. They closed the show with this perfect and rousing piece that completely blew my fucken head apart and sprayed the people in front and around me with brain matter and glop that glowed in the dark. It didn’t leave a stain.
Whoever it was that applied the word shred to the guitar must of been at this show. Howe is right there, dragging at one moment catching right up the next. This is the epitome of a guitar solo. And by god, don't forget Wakeman's little addition that wasn't in the studio version.
It's interesting that this riff is originally featured on a song called "Nether Street" by one of Steve Howe's pre-Yes bands, Bodast. It makes up the bulk of the tune with added chord progressions and lyrics. A nice song and gives another perspective on the "Wurm" riff.
This is simply amazing... Yes nailed it on Yessongs and this is one of the finest examples from this album. I don't know why they never released "The wurm" as a single. surely could recreate this note for note in the studio. Rick's keyboards are off the charts!
+manonthemoog I love the Keys to Ascension Würm solo. I consider it his best recorded Moog solo. I really like the rich tone and use of tremolo and glide, and the gentle shift from a groovy blues scale to searing scales and impeccable arpeggios. It's also longer. But I enjoy the modulation and vintage tone in the Yessongs rendition which you don't always hear out of Wakeman's Moog sounds. It's a really cool patch and solo.
I had vague memories of the version you mention as being a bit weaker than the Yessongs version. So I just went and had a listen. My memories served me correctly, although yeah, it was interesting to hear the bluesy touches he added. The Yessongs version is perfectly composed and its coupled with one of the most unique minimoog solo sounds I've heard. PS - longer solos are not automatically better, which my long-winded solos prove all too well.
After listening quite a bit more, I gotta say I really prefer this solo after all. The Moog patch, the performance (always replete with Wakeman's trademark flourishes and style), the shifting scale types and the unique modulation all put it in a class of its own. I feel you on the long-winded solos, hahaha. I now find myself playing Würm in a manner closer to this lead. Gotta reprogram my sound to get some of those liquidy envelopes and modulation going. This solo says a lot more in a lot less time than the KtA version. There's a potent energy in the performance that isn't quite there thirty years later, even if the production is higher grade.
+Tom Dini I don't know the sound details since I never played a Moog myself, but - although I agree that the KTA solo could be shorter, it develops perfectly, not with a full arpeggi assault but with very tasteful minimal, memorable melodies
This Rick Wakeman MiniMoog solo just about takes the cake. Next to R. Wright, I would have to say hands down, nobody has mastered the "synthesizer" in this time period the way Wakeman has. ELP... Eat your heart out... Yes takes it. Oh, and don't forget that guitar solo either. What a perfect combo. YESSONG Rules!!!! Especially Starship Trooper!!!!!
Perfection to the highest degree by any band out there, saw identical version of starship trooper live in Sept. 77 at New Haven Coliseum... just as good as Yessongs era.
when I was about 12 i bought my first two albums. I didn't even have my stereo yet but I knew I was getting one. LED Zep 4 and yessongs. Love comes to you and you follow... what can I say Yes forever changed my life or shaped it rather.
Make sure you got at least a couple Good speakers and a really nice amp in an appropriate space, you could go to 11 on volume But you may not survive the experience. This is how I first listened to this song when the album hit the shelves, I survived, and am here to tell you that yes, this is the Greatest Guitar Lead/Outro ever, I would have to give the solo in Yours is no Disgrace from Yessongs or Siberian Khatru from Yessongs the title of Greatest Guitar Ever I just cannot choose between them, SO I CHOOSE BOTH!
In every live version i've heard of this song, the stupid crown starts clapping stiffly on every beat like its a polka. For crying out loud! Groove the back beat!
You would have had to have watched this at a viewing of Yessongs at a movie theater with all the available sound equipment at the time....it was memorable...
I've seen and heard a lot of covers of Wurm. The biggest thing I see missed is bass players being way to busy and not playing the big, long HEAVY notes like Mr. Squire does here. The typical schooled bridge pickup sound and lots of notes DOESN'T work! I won't name names, but, some heavyweight studio/touring bassists I admire did NOT do this piece any justice what-so-ever! Huge bass sound...not notey, cutesy, wanky chops...is the key to making this beauty move! Yes, Chris could be notey, but, he also knew when to hold back and fill it up with big sound!

Unglaublich! Hab noch nie sowas gutes gehört.
HEAR, HEAR Thomas Kaba!!!!!
I totally get what you are saying 👍
@ Thomas Kaba: Someone gets it!
When I first heard this on headphones 🎧 in '71 my mind was officially blown! ! !
He's not playing a guitar, he's playing his fucking soul.
As a teen, I would put this on whenever there was a full moon, turn up the volume and watch the moon from outside the window!
One of my favorite pieces of music of all time. There is not one single time that it doesn't give me the chills.
So good. Been listening to this for 16 years now. Still not tired of it even a bit.
This is THE definitive version in my humble opinion. What a performance!!!
Yes, completely set aside either way
The 79 chicagoes? I won't exactly throw Badgers Tony Kaye in the trash either; I rile up pretty bad across di fferent buzz/orgasm but the Yessongs is seriously set-aside indeed
Pre-Topo Rick Man is pretty important
so good.
One of my favorite YES tunes.Way ahead of its time
Best chord progression I ever heard
Haunting. Lingering. Permanent. The album's orgasm.
James Bruce Parallel chord structures on the guitar . Simple and perfect. Just what needed to be there. Rick’s minimoog d solo and ominous string synth. OMG
I agree
Yes, it’s magic.
Steve wrote it back in the Bodast days.

Back in the day i painstakingly, with a cassette player, start, record, stop, rewind etc made a 20 minute version. Thank you Yes for the memories
Cosa dire? Epitaffio del Rocco Barocco (mia personale opinione)Dopo non c'è stato Nulla di meglio.Stewe Howe prima di DIO.
This Still is The BEST LIVE version I have ever heard or Witnessed!!
Oh Wow!!!! Witnessed?! What a memory you will share with ya kids then!!! Blessed.

I love that too, when Jon carrys on the Mellotrons 8 Choir in perfect key
this is my favorite part of Yessongs, although I love it mostly for Chris Squire's epic bassline. RIP, Chris
Chris Squire is amazing on Wurm!
Friendly greetings
possibly the greatest guitar solo ever recorded. I can't believe it's been 50 years, and I still listen to it almost every day.

Perfection...
And this was the moment Yes invented what would later account for all of grunge.
wow - never expected to get nearly 100,00 views on this. all I can say is you all obviously have good taste in music!
Yes brother!!! Happy holiday eve!! Thanks for the post on this :)
My first concert ,I still remember that moment when I heard this song as if it happened yesterday, one of the most memorable moments in my life

All members of Yes show his magic in Wurm. Maybe there is no any other band to make similar. The greatest band.
Beautiful
Best Outro in progrock. Epic!
The greatest 20 bars in synthesizer history.
Thank you Mr. Howe for holding onto this masterpiece. How the band he played for prior to Yes couldn't find a place for this is beyond me. Regardless, it all worked out in the end.

basically the greatest song of all time
YES. AFTER.....NOTHING!NOT NIGHT ......NOTHING BETTER
Masterpiece! Can't get enough of Wakeman and Howe geniuses! Truly an essence of 70s progressive rock!
Man, the addition of the mellotron in this version just seems so refreshing.

One of Steve's best performance! An absolutely sublime guitar solo that drops my jaw everytime i hear it!

I get goose bumps everytime I listen to this amazing song...
My God that is the best tuning of the moog ever. It always amazes how Wakeman can make adjustments on the fly. The most epic ending to any song...
brilliant then. brilliant now. nothing like it. thanks for posting.
why does this vid not have like a trillion views?

That mini mood solo gives me life 😍😭
Greatest musical piece in history.
Love Steve Howe's tone and attack, and have always loved the little riff at 3.10, it's wild !
This Jamb would defeat an alien invasion from space. That's why it's called Starship Trooper.
Incredible good and timeless.

Totally and Absolutely Fucking Awesome
Fantastic music. Nobody no doing similar. If you can join in live it you can be sure it's one of the best song everytime.
one of my all time favorites as well. great choice

this song its just amazing
i don't understand how new music is so basic if in the 70's there was bands like yes, king crimson and genesis...

01:48 30 seconds of pure Glory.
Just saw a Cadillac commercial that sounded amazing similar to Würm.
